Not really sure I fully understand how resistances and damage work. For instance, if a unit had 15SR and was size 6, would they effectively take 0 damage from an air elemental?

Oh dear, now I'm concerned. Without spoiling too much, is it possible to say what made him mad?

I mean, I know a lot of people hoped Kellhus would 'lose' but I like the guy, so I was hoping he would 'win.' So if it's something like that, I can understand.

Thalamanth summary.png
1MB, 1232x1566px
Hello everyone! I already asked last thread, but since it was the end of the thread and many people couldn't have seen it or answered to it, I'm doing it again!

A few days ago, I released my first mod, an EA custom nation called Thalamanth, that's about sacred amazons and strong air magic. I already had the opportunity to balance it a bit, but I'd love to have more feedback to balance it even better, especially since only a few people told me what they thought, and furthermore since I'm getting contradictory feedback (some people saying the nation is too strong, others it's too weak). Mainly, I'd like some feedback from people who actually tried the nation against AIs, rather than just checking it on the inspector. Plus, you might actually have fun on the way!

While doing so, you'll notice several things that must all be taken into account when discussing balance: first, everything is very expensive; second, some mages get a lot more powerful when using some national items that are restricted to them (no other unit can wear them); third, there are many national spells. What I mean here, is that while the nation has some great strengths and some great weaknesses, they are supposed to balance each other out; my goal is to make the nation neither among the top 5 of the base game, nor among the worst 10. It should be somewhere in the middle (although it's not a problem if it's in the top of this middle). I think it's very hard to have a realistic idea of the powerlevel of the nation without actually trying it in game.

Here's the link to the thread and download: http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showtopic=3411
I'll lurk a bit on domg, but don't hesitate answering the thread or mailing me either! Thanks already for your help!

https://github.com/larzm42/dominions-tools

Does anyone know how to use this to modify the names of research paths? Or, better yet, does anyone know how to use this at all?

I know python, but there is basically no documentation whatsoever.

reposting from last thread; pls help
>>
>>182286000
It's just that lightning swarm specifically doesn't add strength to its damage. There's a few things that don't, cross/bows most obviously, although there's a couple craftable whips and Snake Bladder Stick that don't as well, from memory. You just have to check sometimes.
>>
>>182286265
Do you mean changing the actual names of the schools in game?

If so I don't think that's possible.
>>
>>182274710
I recruited them because they did more base damage (fighting in cold 3), had longer reach, and did blunt. I wasn't sure if the two attacks of the dual wielding steel maidens with slash/pierce was worth it against skeletons with pierce resist also wasn't sure if each of the two attacks triggered separate repel checks.
>>
>>182287908
each subsequent attack does have its own repel check, but the effective length of the weapon goes down by one each time, meaning that with lots of attacks, later attacks don't get repelled.
>>
>>182287908
>>182288419
also the pierce resistance ain't no thang since longdead have tiny hp pools and SoG maidens will 1 shot them regardless
>>
>>182286795
Is it possible to use these tools to modify the game at all? Or is it exclusively for extracting sprites and other information?
>>
>>182286795
And yeah that is what I'm trying to do. I also want to change other things which can't be changed with mods.
>>
>>182289002
Not really possible.
>>

>>
>>182290878
desu trying to make your soldiers kill 9 gygjas propped up by skratti slaves worth of skelly spam is just the wrong approach. Skelly spam is actually really good against troop-buff tactics unless your troops in question are REALLY fast and REALLY killy, in which case the fight is decided by critical mass (which for steel maidens basically requires quickness, which you won't have early). Use elementals (buffed fire is best, but unbuffed fire, earth, air, and ice all work) or multiple round 1 equake casts. You can potentially get arrows to work if you have a bajillion squads, all placed forward and all set to 'fire' and hope to blind tag enough mages to break them, but it's in no way guaranteed.

>>
>>182294591
Ironically enough, you may not believe it but I actually made that pic. I made a later one since people always complained about the clutter in those played/expected/got threads.
>>
>>182294659
your scales are fine. Maneater can expand reliably, since its fear aura lets it auto-win against crossbows, which are all over the place and relatively hard to take with all-ranger expansion parties. It singlehandedly turns your expansion from one of the weakest of the era where you struggle to hit 16 in year 1 to contender-level while still giving you vampire count paths and enough money scales to hit a level 5 research target by turn 14
>>
>>182295051
Can I trade the man-eater for the dog or the raven?
>>
>>182295251
not while having the same late age expansion power no
>>
>>182295251
not really. both are squishy (the raven will sometimes just lose in melee to the crossbows in the 1-2 rounds it takes to rout them), dog doesn't fly so it has a hard time v crossbows. You can potentially use the linnormr, but it's still somewhat less reliable than the maneater and brings a less useful crosspath

Not anymore.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but you're shittalking too much. First you said you're going to save the population of your provinces, and now it's close to 0 almost everywhere besides the northern part of the island. Then you said you'll remove me, and decided to storm my capital with that pathetic army. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, son.

Wew lad
>>
>>182301648
It's not perfect for sure, but it's still better than just looking in the inspector. If you're REALLY dedicated to your task, try it against human players, go ahead!
>>
>>182306238
At the end of the day it doesnt matter because despite my self admitted lack of skills at the game you are still losing. I can replace my losses faster than you can so I can just throw meat into the grinder until you die. Thats assuming Asophodel doesn't kill you first.
>>
It meant it's good to be friends with bats, which is certainly true. If I'd known you were also going for it we could have coordinated it differently through some pre-turn form of chat.

As I said, I have no hard feelings over our bump there. That speculative force didn't cost me much...I lost more gold to an event on turn 2. However I do want those provinces on that island that you cannot use.
>>
>>182306689
You have some anger management issues to take care of. Killing one player and then losing is not a great plan by any means. That's considering you can kill me at all. So far you were pretty terrible at it.
>>
Also salva I'm really disappointed that you didn't respond to my salva-eqsue message in kind. I had fun writing it and was looking forward to reading what you'd come up with.
>>
>>182306957
They're forest provinces. I'm Vanarus. And you're Xibalba who already has six forests and two/three caves.

While Pelagia is probably going to try to steal them from me starting next turn - nicely telegraphed there, but at least it means he's stopped eating Nazca - I'm not going to intentionally feed you more land so you can grow even huger. I understand if you want to take the throne to stop me from outright winning immediately, but I'm not going to set you up to overrun the game in turn.

You're the largest nation in the game and you're bats. I have standards.
>>
>>182306992
I'm shit at the game, I never play to win. Especially in dumb UW meme games. The only games I've ever won were because everyone else got fed up and left. And I'm still doing better than you right now which must rankle a bit. If this is all some attempt at diplo to brow beat me into leaving you alone its not going to work because I'll keep sending guys at you even if it kills me now. All your badgering has done is give me a clear objective for the game other than dick about with statues under water.

Any comprehensive guides to Tart gates strategy and usage out there? Looking at the inspector I see that they're listed as a mage, when most other units with paths are set as commanders, and I believe I've read they start out as units and you need to gift of reason them or something to get them to be useful? The Manual doesn't seem to have useful into that isn't in the inspector.
>>
>>182333663
Some of them need gift of reason, it is not chassi specific. All of them will start with many afflictions so gift of health is preferable.
>>
>>182333663
It's not really a strat you can rely on outside of memegames (might start one so maybe you could try in that?)

Basically you need a nation with recruitable D4's and some kind of access to a Gift of Reason type spell (I know there's another but I always forget it).

Now you need a D5 to pull off the strat (the D5 needs to be equipped with a skull staff and a skull helm or whatever to bring it up to D7). To get D5's you mass cast Twiceborn on your D4's and suicide them inside you dom, some will get a boost to D5.

The you simply mass Tarts and Gift of Reason the ones with a chance for the best magic (Male titans and Monstra) while using the others as tanky chaff.
>>
>>182333663
Also don't forget that even if you cure their afflictions they'll still have shattered soul which will cause them to do something random every fourth turn or so.
>>
>>182334253
oh i was unsure what the shattered soul is, does it act like insane where you know its not in your control?
>>
>>182334427
yep, selection box goes red and it'll have some nonsensical text
>>

Not if you can forge a Ring of Sorcery. Or you can spend 60 D gems to empower.

How well do elementals perform against Lemuria? Fire elementals seem obviously good but what about the rest of them? They have high MR so you'd expect Lemuria to be very ineffective at killing them, but on the other hand, trampling probably doesn't work too well either.
>>
What would you guys recommend for a starting faction? I like playing evil factions because I'm an edgefag so if there are any evil factions that are easy to get into then yeah...
>>
>>182337425
All factions are pretty evil so I'll just recommend factions for beginners.

EA Vanheim
MA Ulm
LA Midgard
>>
>>182337425
A lot of nations can be played as evil. Tell us a bit about what often seems neat to you in games? Any examples you can give will help us narrow down some ideas.
>>
>>182338224
Well I really like Lovecraftian themes and demons and the like, summoning demons to make deals or using sanity destroying otherthings to destroy other races, shit like that

>also still haven't bought the game
>tfw no money
>>
>>182337425
EA and LA Mictlan is pretty much the go to evil guys nation, and both are solidly strong but not a good beginners nation
>>
>>182336724

Worse than against Ermor but still ok due to high mr on elementals.

Trample is 1/4 as effective since it is not magic so air/earth/ice elementals are meh. Water elementals are also meh due to non magical attacks. But ghosts will have issues bringing them down anyway.

Fire elementals obviously are the best by far and burn ghosts in droves.
>>
>>182338472
Blood magic is all about summoning demons and other Unpleasant Stuff. The intersection of Blood and Astral specifically is focused around the summoning of Horrors, extradimensional nasties that are basically what it says on the tin.

There are multiple nations that are good at getting these. They are MA and LA Abysia, LA Ulm and LA Bogarus. As you can tell, Late Age is the age where a lot of Blood and Astral magic is used.

Of those, I'd say you should probably stay away from Bogarus at first. LA Ulm isn't too difficult, as long as you read up a bit on how to leverage your amazing research advantage, and try to start up your blood economy early.
>>
>>182338472
LA R'lyeh, MA R'lyeh, Berytos, Mictlan, a lot of LA nations
>>
>>182338472
R'lyeh has Lovecraftian part covered, but they are definitely not beginner-friendly (actually they are not anyone-friendly).

EA Lanka, EA Hinnom, LA Marignon and MA/LA Abysia and EA/LA Mictlan are the most "deal with demons" kind of nations, but they are not all that beginner-friendly too, t b h.
>>
>>182337425

EA Marverni
Zerg rush nation. Except instead of aliens, you spawn endless swarms of boars, cheap trash units, and cheap mage communions.
High winrate and great nation to use for learning communions.
A communion is when a group of mages channel their magic towards other mages to make them more effective at spellcasting.

MA Ulm
Slow but tough human nation. Excels at crafting items, sieges, and evocation.
This is as close as you're going to get to a fantasy dwarf nation.

LA Agartha
Just like MA Ulm, except they have necromancy and powerful thugs.
Thugs are big units that fuck shit up.
>>
>>182339680

LA Agartha has powerful thugs?
>>
>>182341605
Tomb Oracle
>>
>>182341975

What about it?
>>
Evil faction wanting to play fag here, I've been looking at a lot of the factions and I've been wondering if Agartha would be a good starting race?
>>
>>182342282
EA is tricky because your troops and mages are all cold blooded and perform really poorly in cold temp provinces. MA and LA is beginner friendly though.
>>
>>182342196
spending 30 high value death gems + 15(+) gems to equip is great value for a thug anon
>>
>>182342196
>he hasn't seen the horror that is Sy's tomb oracles
>>
>>182343086

Weapon shield alone is at least 15 gems.

At conj7 you also get wraith lords.

How is tomb oracle a great value thug compared to wraith lords or even to sidhe lords?
>>
>>182343195

Oh no, I have to send a N2 mage with two N gems to cast ravenous swarm and then it dies in 4 turns. THE HORROR!
>>

>>182347871
difficult research, so they were already struggling to reach research goals, and were also struggling to react to other people's research goals
>>
What are some general early game counters to B9W9 jaguar warriors? Archers? Go for antimagic?
>>
>>182348282
Earth meld and archers.
>>
>>182348282
earth meld
>>
>>182348282

Decent sacreds will shred them easily. Like white centaurs or vanhere.

Alternatively mass troops, jaguars aren't very survivable.
>>
>>182343417
I mean, it's not like D3 provinces had the best income in the first place.
>>
>>182341605
MA Agartha does in the form of Marble Oracles, which when built properly are among the tankiest tanks in the game.
LA Agartha has great mages and troop summons, but not much in the way of thug chassis.
>>
Pan, sent you a message ingame. I just want that cave to your north and my expansion to the west is done. Hope that is agreeable and that we can be friendly neighbors.
>>
>>182348282
Cheap shitty chaff, fatigue killers

Everyone will say archers, this isn't true unless you have more archers than they have jags AND you have antimagic, otherwise your archers will all die from blood vengence and hp rout.

Skelespam with curse of stones works gangbusters
>>

I've played this god damn game for 6 hours and I still haven't the slightest clue what I'm doing. As early-era not!celt boar-druid boys I've yet to see a single boar. That said, I've snagged a throne. The not!Assyrian(?) giants to my south are giving me trouble. I've begun to plant temples and churn out priests but that's not been very effective apart from giving me a lot of useless priests.
>>
>>182361187
The giants are Canaanite.
>>
>>182362079
On the wiki it says I should consistnetly have 15 provinces by the beginning of year 2. How? How do people manage that?
>>
>>182361187
The boar summon is in conjuration 5 I think. It summons a boar that summons other boars automatically.
>>
>>182362548
Build new expansion parties from your cap. In Marverni's case it can be a bit tricky. You need a bit of production scale to pump out enough bare chested warriors to overwhelm indies. Take an awake monster pretender to make things easier. Thrice-horned boar or Earth Snake are a good choice.
>>
>>182362930
And have the thrice horned boar as my general?
>>
>>182361187
Singleplayer is shit and you should be using lots and lots of magic.
Boars are summons.
>>
>>182363014
No, he can fight alone.
>>
>>182363014
The point of awake pretender is usually to take provinces on its own.
>>
>>182363060
>>182363183
>>182363276
Ok, so i'm designing my pretender, and he's that boar, with 4 points into nature, 2 into growth and productivity, and one into magic. Where else should I invest?
>>
>>182363428
You want some points into Earth Magic; that will give him more protection
>>
>_<
>>
>>182363428
No, take the boar, take growth 3, cold 1, prod 3, E6N4 and dom 6

You've got money, enough resources to shit bare chests out, a boar that will actually survive the first few provinces before he gets experience and will eventually be able to cast big N spells that you don't get natively, as well as Earth Blood Deep Well while having enough dominion to not get domkilled.

Another idea would be prod 3, cold 3, growth 3, misf 1, drain 1, N1B9 awake Black Bull

Big expansion, you still get gold, but your research will be slightly worse and you might lose some gems, but not that many probably if you're lucky but the key thing here is that your boars will be a real pain in the arse to deal with

desu it really depends on what kinda game you're playing. Like you could run it in WHFB, or Song of Swords, or literally just modify the Dominions mechanics.

It's got the fantasy kitchen sink, and thus needs a system either tailored to accommodate specifically that or to accommodate anything, but at the same time is amusingly lethal, with anything human-sized being perfectly capable of dying to slingers if they lose their helmets.

Your units are really good so you should make them.

W9 bless, sloth scales, either order or turmoil, magic, luck if turmoil.

Expand like craz with 5-6 white centaur expansion parties.

Rush alt5, cast mother oak (may need cons4 for a thistle mace).

After that rush enchantment and alternation up with some conjuration and evocation (EQ). Kill everything with mass buffed reveler armies with centaur elites.

what about >>182441174 ? Can I recruit enough satyrs with sloth?

>>
>>182441464
Order helps to reduce the unrest your units cause but generally your main focus in Magic and Bless. Revellers cost 3 resources, sloth wont hurt that.
>>
>>182441464

Resources are a non issue. Sloth3 is free 120 points. Some temp scales could also be a thing, maybe cold1.

You generally want gold so growth/order is good. If you go turmoil your pans spawn freespawn so those, in big enough numbers, can be your free chaff in turmoil - then you mainly recruit mages.

You get blood right away and make blood stones and thorn armor. You dont really get into big blood summons until later in the game.

Fear.
>>
>>182457331

Fear Units in a monster’s Fear area of effect get their morale temporarily lowered and their entire squad
must take a morale check against the monster’s Fear, or rout. The basic Fear effect requires a check
against 10. Unlike Awe, the bonus to Fear indicates the additional area of effect, not the Fear strength.
So a Fear +4 monster has normal Fear that radiates to 4 additional squares. The Fear strength itself is
increased for every full +5 Fear, so a Fear +10 unit would radiate to ten additional squares, and force a
morale check against 12. The base area of effect (Fear +0) is 6 squares.
>>

Fear is the Higgs boson of Dom4.

There's no Fear +4 monsters. Fear has a minimum of +5.

>The Fear strength itself is
increased for every full +5 Fear, so a Fear +10 unit would radiate to ten additional squares, and force a morale check against 12.
This is Dom3 info that is almost unequivocally considered false. There's likely no increase in morale check difficulty at all, not to mention the fact that you can increase Fear by 1 or 2 or whatever with death magic bonus, and it WILL PROBABLY also increase AoE. It's really hard to test but it was tested a long time ago.

TL;DR: manual is wrong about Fear, and devs admitted that they forgot the exact changes from dom3 to dom4.
>>
>>182457696
Dude, it's on page 39. Effect 11 - special damage.

And the code for Blindness is on page 8 - Affliction damage numbers.

>>182458308

The info about morale checks is... questionable. My suspicion is that it has to do with the % of the squad inside of the fear area, but I'm not sure. I know for sure that silly-high fear values like 30 or 99 will lead to dudes routing before entering melee with the fear rock, and that low fear values can have some dudes in the squad at negative morale while others are unaffected.

Unit quality matters if your goal is to win and not just survive into lategame like some kind of scrub. Land nations don't need to siege UW caps. UW nations do need to beat the land nations on land to take the thrones.

Again, I'm saying that successful UW play relies on playing aggressively, and that the UW nations that play to turtle do not win anything but noob games.

But hey, maybe you can try joining your next game as a UW nation and losing there just like how you lose with land nations.

can someone paste the lore from LA Ulm's nation selection thing?
>>
>>182485075
This one?:

Ulm is a human kingdom destroyed by civil war and a great curse. Hunger for mortal flesh plagues the nobles of the land. An Iron Inquisition controls the kingdom and all magic is banned. Secretive occultists of the Illuminated Order hide in the shadows and manipulate leaders near and far.

Or this one?:

After years of civil war, the Iron Kingdom crumbled. During the Night of Treason a great Malediction was placed upon the kingdom. The forests became dark and hostile. Wolves and creatures even worse stalked the land. Slowly the kingdom recovered, but it was not what it once was. The knightly order was all but destroyed and the Master Smiths had disappeared. The secrets of blacksteel were forgotten. An order of Black Priests emerged in Ulm in the last days before the civil war. They formed an Iron Cult, consolidated their position and forbade the use of magic. Magic outside religion was announced to be sacrilegious and the few surviving Master Smiths were put to the flames. Although magery is forbidden, there are some fortune tellers and members of the Order of the Illuminated Ones who secretly ply their trade in the arcane.

The wikia has all the blurbs copied from the game, as well.

MagusAssistance was a special case in that the seas were disconnected. I actually did have killing Ys in my gameplan from the get-go, with my plan being to teleport in a bunch of elemental summoners at once to grab their seas and then gateway in my lobsters. It was like step 3 or 4 in my overall plan after securing a coastline to mass lab rats.

I didn't get around to it because I needed to fight land nations (first to kill a nation to get my coastline, then to stop Mari from snowballing to victory and then to stop Abysia from eating Ulm). If we'd shared a sea, I would have rushed them right away.

From what I can gather, the transition from MA to LA Ulm was marked by a catastrophic civil war, with the Black Order / Iron Inquisition (the religious sects who claim any magic used outside of religion as heresy) creating a confrontation with the Master Smiths and the other magical users, with the various nobles throwing their lot in with either side. I'm not exactly sure of the conditions, but the civil war pushed the defenders of Ulm (the Inquisition / Order) back to their capital, where it was held under siege for quite some time.
The Night of Treason is, as stated in the blurb, the night when the Malediction came about (which is either a cataclysmic blood spell cast to break the sieging force, or a spell cast to summon / cast by a new dark Ulmish God). The Malediction cursed a large portion of the Ulmish people with a terrible affliction, causing them to feast upon their dead and living allies, most notably the starving Guardians who defended Ulm and turned into the Ghoul Guardians of LA (under orders from Ulrich Patrifagus - father eater - who had accidentally eaten his dead father and the previous Castellan of Ulm and subsequently lost his mind), and the many Lords and nobles who slaughtered their subjects in their hunger and became the LA Vampire Counts.

Tangentially, one of these vampires is 'Burkhard Nachtzehrer', the in-game version of Vlad the Impaler / Dracula.

Many Smiths simply left Ulm to form Agartha's Golem Cult (which was actually created by Klaus, a fleeing Smith from Ulm, which probably sets MA Agartha as 100 to 200 years later than MA Ulm, as Klaus is 275 in-game), and then became Alchemists in the LA.

Not really much information about what actually happened / what the Malediction actually is, but if someone else has an idea, I'd love to know.

Okay, I am new as FUCK to Dominions; 134 hours in and literally never finished a match, not even come close. Figured I'd at last boot up a MA game and give it a shot. Decided to go with Ys, because why not, they sound cool. Turns out they ARE cool; they're super cool! I may have found my new favourite race, but there's one small, undead problem.

Ermor. How the actual FUCK do you siege these fuckers out?! You can't hit them early-game because their death domain murders your supply and you starve a long time before an army of skeletons does. And you can't stop them late-game because of the skeleton rape-train they've built up! I managed to just about beat down their door, before the towers sent my entire force running, killed half my priests and left everyone but my unique hero, prophet and god with enough injuries to make them worthless. On top of that, I have Bandar Log, Marignon, Ulm AND Pangea all pushing at me from every side. An unlucky move got my entire reserve force wiped out by the fucking centaurs and Ermor is re-taking everything I thought I had liberated from them because they have no concept of a fucking economy.

What the fuck am I doing wrong here?!

>God there is just so much lore you have to seriously dig to find, which is a shame as most of it is just the best I've ever seen!
I think that's one of the things I love about Dominions so much. There was an article or two that waxed similarly, about how there was just so much nuance in the game that even the developers didn't quite know how everything worked, and that was part of why I started playing. Everything just feels so mysterious and arcane, like you're the first person to put all the pieces together.
Sure, you understand the general gist of what's happening at a brief glance, but then maybe you get a hero one turn and his description clues you in on another piece of your nations puzzle, information that is available literally nowhere else except from this one unit, and the magic just reels you right back in. Then maybe you get bored, start playing a new faction, and then you read the description for one of their units, and immediately you see the connection to that race you were just playing, and suddenly you understand just what happened that little bit more. It's boggling and annoying and difficult to navigate, but in the end I think that's exactly what I want from a game like this.
>>
>>182501898
Are you playing online or against AI?
>>
>>182502901
not him, but he's clearly v ai
>>
>>182502901
Against AI. I tried it against people once, but with four of us scratching our heads, we couldn't figure out a way to get it to work outside play-by-email or some archaic crap. If I were against people, I'd try allying with Bandar Log or Marignon to tag-team the fuck out of Ermor, letting them do the majority of the fighting, while i secure the coastal areas and fortify the shit out of them, using priests to push back the death domain while preserving my forces and snatching the throne literally right next door to Ermor's home.

Sadly, the AI has no diplomatic capacity, so that's off the table.

>>182502614
I couldn't agree more. I think part of why I like Ys so much is the connections with Tir Na Nog from the Early Age. A little mention of Ysians raiding Marignon shorelines and I just started thinking, "Ohhh shiiit!" because I've played as Marignon before and I know what that's like-! It's an amazing feeling.

And nothing feels like it just comes to an end (except maybe the utter lack of Ys or Eriu in the LA); when Ermor died, it shattered into a half-dozen smaller realms and it continued to change as an undead nation, its one-time existence shaping the world around it even when it's no-longer directly influencing those nations. It feels to inter-connected and real it's unbelievable!
>>

It's fine. The game can handle a large distribution of different skill levels within the match due to its free-for-all nature. It's in principle possible for expert players to go out first due to being dogpiled and nations played by rookies lingering on until the end. Some players maintain 50% win rates in mixed skill 8+ player games while picking a wide variety of nations so that isn't to say skill and experience are irrelevant, but newbies aren't disruptive either (the actually disruptive shit is players going AI or disappearing while they are still relevant: as long as you actually play your turns and don't quit at first sign of trouble, you are a good addition to any game that doesn't advertise itself as one aimed at advanced players). With good strategy (ie. be aggressive - passive play may enable you to stand until the end but you lose by default if you don't make an attempt on the thrones) there's even a decent shot for a rookie to win or achieve an endgame-relevant position.

So it ends. I'm leaving for a trip in a week so it was nice to wrap this game up one way or another. Posting graphs from Acashic Record in following posts. If the admin is reading this, they can close the game.

This was my first game after experiencing Dominions burnout and taking a break so I opted for a nation I was comfortable with and had a ready pretender for (D4N4 Carrion Dragon). In first direction I expanded to, I quickly ran into Agartha, Abysia and Gath. In the other direction I again ran into Gath that had taken advantage of a vacuum left by Ragha, Patala and Man turned AI towards the beginning of the game. By the time I encountered Gath in the other direction, they were in Ragha's capring and had no proper connection to AI Patala either, it was Gath all the way.

My MO in Dominions tends to be to knock down everyone above me and emerge as last man standing so the course was clear and I felt obliged to attack Gath and I did so on turn 16, trying to persuade other nations to do the same (in the end Abysia helped me but they were attacked by Atlantis and never amounted to much of anything, and Agartha attacked Gath after finishing off Bogarus). However, there was a complication: I had bumped into Ulm's expansion parties thrice and felt compelled to attack Ulm as well, which I did on turn 13.
>>
>>182518618

Not unsurprisingly from a surprise attack, I had initial success despite trying to catch Ulm's armies elsewhere and while I was unable to mount an offensive, Gath was unable to run away with the game. I eventually holed up Ulm in their capital and they started staling. Thinking this was the end to Ulm, I left one unit sieging their capital and moved on to attack Gath in earnest. At that point Bogarus was finished and Agartha was also about to join the fun against Gath who was still (by graphs at least) the strongest player.

Then disaster struck. Ulm was subbed and in one fell swoop reclaimed their entire capring with armies stealthing out of their capital. I had counted on them being turned AI that couldn't mount a serious attack but at that moment I was thoroughly unprepared to answer their forces while also holding off Gath. I panicked and requested a separate peace from both Ulm (promising back their capring and some concessions that might allow them a chance to become relevant instead of being squashed) and Gath (return to pre-war borders). Surprisingly they both agreed and I did make peace with Gath and refused a counteroffer made by Ulm and proceeded to squash them.

That actually worked out extremely well for me. I wasn't ahead in graphs by a long shot but Gath and Agartha were rather evenly matched and seeing as that T'ien Ch'i had taken their time subduing AI Patala, I saw them as free territory. As soon as Ulm was properly subdued for good I started preparations for a surprise attack and on turn 36 I took 11 provinces from T'ien Ch'i in my first move and with that they were effectively out of the running while I became the largest player. A number of turns after Gath had been losing ground to Agartha and went AI which prompted Agartha turn on me but it was too late. I brought out Centaur Sage turbocommunions and neither Agartha or T'ien Ch'i were able to resist.

A lot of players went AI in this game (and interestingly, all of the early AI players lingered until the end) but since Gath was already there when I met those players, I'd like to think I didn't receive a disproportionate advantage from eating them, although it must be said AIs prompted a diplomatic situation that served me really well and justifies my "go after the leader" philosophy. For example, China was free game because their forces were occupied trying to siege Patala and Atlantis that couldn't ever have amounted to anything even if they were ignored. The game would have been much different if they had had the first-mover advantage against me rather than vice versa. Conversely, I feel the one-time deviation I made from my plan (attacking Ulm seemed just too lucrative after the constant bumps with their expansion armies) very nearly caused me to overextend and lose, and one can only imagine the growth Gath might have had if I hadn't stepped in at such an early stage and instead took 8 pitiful provinces from Ulm.

Is this kimmokm?
>>
>>182518801
Was a good game, in any case.

My dom had no fucking sites, which is really what killed me in the end. I had the most research of anyone, as the graphs tell, but I couldn't pour in the gems to bring forth enough thugs, turbocomms, summoned armies, etc. to actually fight back when my armies were constantly being outmaneuvered by fucking birds.

Also the huge overextension and the fact that I gave up on the Atlantis campaign far too late, when I realized that after 20 turns of siege despite constant reinforcements that it would never, ever break.
>>
>>182512135
I'm finding it dumb that you're being allowed to run away with the game.

Only you, Ulm and I are big enough to be serious contenders, and Ulm - in addition to not knowing how to script or how to get a sensible army composition - has decided to attack me as well, despite you being by far the more snowbally of the two of us.
>>
>>182519415
Don't you literally border enough thrones to win, Malakal?
>>
>>182519510
I border enough, sure. But I'm Vanarus. My armies aren't known to magically appear out of nowhere, since I ain't stupid enough to throw money away on Oathbound. People could park a sensibly-sized army on the neighbouring thrones and fort them up. That way, I ain't gonna have much luck rushing them without everyone knowing exactly what I'm doing.

Vanarus/Nazca/Pelagia may be smaller than Ulm/Vanarus/Xibalba but they're still in the game. Ulm has fewer provinces but more thrones and my bats can't really harm ulmish units. I have to think that Ulm appreciates the inevitability of some sort of eventual conflict between us but they're not letting that blind them to the truth of your thronerush threat. Besides, I have only one throne and Ulm severally borders it, which is a little nervewracking for me.

>>182519510
Yes Vanarus does indeed border the critical thronecount. They own 3 throne provinces (1 claimed a while ago, at least 1 more claim happening this turn) and border further 2 for the total 5 needed. They've also encroached very aggressively into Vanheim's island, forting 2 tiles from Van's cap iirc.

If this Ulm thinks he'll be able to beat a runaway Xibalba after he's helped you, he's in for a painful lesson. He's already shown that he's got no idea what to be recruiting, and with the money he's been throwing out the window, there ain't no way he'll have counters by the time you start running away with blood magic and earthquaking entire armies of his at a time.

This is why I hate the skill discrepancies in these games. If people had known how to expand, and if Ulm knew anything, we wouldn't be in this situation.
>>
>>182501898
To answer the actual question, Ermor is very difficult to deal with if you're new, regardless of who you're playing as. You'll need to git gud at magic in order to beat them. Look for spells that deal damage to the entire battlefield, in general.

I dunno, I've got easily a thousand hours in the game and I've never won. It's not about experience so much as skill and the time that you invest testing out strategies and just looking over your turns and thinking about them.

I actually think Ulm's gold income is about the same as mine due to their better scales and their uw provs that they sniped before me, plus they've taken less troop lost by gold by a long shot I think. Additionally, I've seen them investing in extra infrastructure while I made bats (instead of sad MA Xibalba frogforts or temples). Of course I'm looking to have an edge with magic and not as much my bad troops, but Ulm must know that, it's no friggin secret. I'm sure they have some thoughts of how to proceed as well in the event of our glorious clash. We'll have to play the game out and see how it goes, but I expect there will be some real surprises on both sides of that war.

Plus we really do actually have to stop you or you can actually win before any other player is in anywhere near in position to threaten to 5throne themselves. Making the play for Bandar's throne is what pushed it to critical, your third owned throne. Drawing the attention of armies that must block your throning does mean you're likely to lose more than just thrones, especially since you've been seriously skimping on troop production to start those throne forts. This means yes your empire is most likely about to be dismantled. I understand why you would want to go for that throne, doubly so since you correctly suspected I was hitting Bandar, but I think that (rightly) drove people from being mildly concerned to truly alarmed by your position.

Oh and speaking of forts and things that irritate you, that one fort of mine on the island we share was from a beautifully timed and placed event a while back.

You're only supposed to be able to have 1PD per 10 population.

For those with no scouts down south, The Scramble for Patala is getting interesting. Greeks made a push towards the Capital and stopped after taking a fort and it's province ring, Bats are fucking everywhere and just accidentally destroyed Patala's last hope army and Golden Naga prophet. Giants have a few scattered provinces and 3 forts under attack by Lizards, they seem to be massing Longdead Horsemen for a last gasp assault against ... someone. Bats probably as Lizards will have a bit of a chuckle at such a force and committing it to Patala would just leave their cap open.

Speaking of Lizards they have three armies on the siege offensive, commanded by a mixture of Tomb Kings and Sauromancers with Tomb Wyrms and a mixed bag of chaff.

Lastly the Patalans seem to have committed to the "100 PD" line of tactical thinking and seem resigned to being a city state, especially after Bats dicked over their expansion party. Ghosts could make a move from the north given they're in the ocean nearby but given the three major powers left in the area (Giants, Bats and Lizards) are powerful death nations they might not want to piss anyone off.

This is such a fun-fucked situation to watch from the side with popcorn.

How to fix shinuyama

The small bakemono are now random free spawn like in CoE4, and your only actual recruitable troops are the Dai Bakemono and human bandits
>>
>>182540698

Everything needs to be cheaper in gold.

Or make their stats better while keeping the cost. Better hp, attack, defence, protection, mages younger and better paths.
>>
>>182540698
How would that fix Shinu? Unlimited Bakemono Works would only mean more corpses for Sceleria to reanimate and won't fix their biggest problem, expansion.

Give them some Bakemono sacred or even better some kind of Oni sacred to bolster expansion and help Shinu not be food for the first nation to spot their flag.
>>
>>182541163
>won't fix their biggest problem, expansion.
Shinu's expansion isn't that bad. Kappas work fine for sloth expansion (think elephants - you dump your gold into them to turn gold into provinces, but you don't want to buy too many) and dai bake archers work if you've got decent prod and/or grab your cap circle fast with an awake. Combined with the fact that shinu really doesn't need anything other than an awake and you wind up with decent expansion
>>
>>182541080
The fact Dai Bakemono cost as much as Jotun Giants but have an extra half dozen resource cost thrown in for what is, ultimately, an inferior unit, is absolutely insulting.

do the Devs just hate weebs?
>>
>>182541163
I don't like giving them sacreds; it's too much of a change to what they're supposed to do. Just give them some expansion-capable troops and maybe a one/turn recruitment of a reverse-standard-bearer style unit with fear, just to give them a slightly bigger incentive to tarpit people for a while.
>>
>>182541163
>>182541080
They need better paths for their mages, Bakemono shamans are trash and the big sorcerors cost a ton and die too quick to be of any real use long term. Uba's need something else to make them compete, they're excellent lab rats but really only the D2 and N2 randoms have any use outside of the lab.

When the game reaches the Magus Aid stage Shinu relies on D2 randoms for skelly/shadowblast spam and heavily afflicted old age sorcerors for the big evos. The other option is to shit on your own research and get some good summons (though you need a pretender with gimped paths to get the best summons, since you're going awake you need to spend points getting A2 for Contact Dai Tengu, good luck getting the gems for that one).

Lets compare to what I would consider a balanced, if a little weak nation, MA C'tis, which is hardly the most powerful nation in MA, but gets such an excellent synergy in units, spells. Marshmasters aren't even STR and have excellent paths, you have a great chance of getting S randoms to set up communions with your *sacred* lizard shamans. Where Shinu has to juggle a strange bunch of mages for poor results C'tis gets an out of the box toolkit for Darkness/Foul Vapors/SkellySpam.

Shinu needs something man.

>and I'm ready to give this a shot for the next eight hours. Where do I start? Who's playing?
If you want to blitz, go join chat for the steamgroup (linked in OP) and ask if someone wants to host a blitz. You won't always be able to find people and it's not the best place for a new player to learn, but if you want to spend the next 4+ hours doing multiplayer dominions it's your best shot.

You're probably not going to have much time for learning during the game itself, so consider asking other players for advice on how to play better once you die or the game ends.

For PBEM, find a recruiting game. You can either go looking around a bunch of the dom4 communities (steamgroup, dom4mods, etc) or if you'd rather play with us specifically keep an eye on the thread for an open game. Games will almost always post llamaserver links, so control-F llamaserver should let you easily check without reading everything.

It looks like you closely missed one, but the admin might let you in if you ask.
>>182299607
>>182397242

Asking if there's an open game every so often may eventually get somebody to start a new game.

After you've found a game, pick your nation and build a pretender. Practice expansion and/or rework your pretender until you can reliably get a decent empire within the first year (absolute minimum of 12 provinces, preferably higher).

After that, it's much the same as singleplayer except you get turns once a day and you can do diplomacy with people. Avoid simply attacking everyone like AI does, make sure to use mages/research, and don't pump tons of PD.

Also avoid joining lots of games at once. Turns are quick early so it might be tempting to have many games, but once you actually have to put thought in they can take a while, especially when you're new.
>>
>>182542206
Looks like my options are fairly limited. I have no idea what's wrong, but my outlook refuses to send emails. I can receive them fine, but can't send a damn thing.

Thanks for the advice. Maybe blitz isn't for me. I'm sure I'll find something eventually... Also gotta find out what mods are currently the meta...
>>
>>182542749
You should be able to easily open a gmail account or something and send your turns through the browser interface it gives.

A fair number of people around here have an email specifically for dominions, as it generates a lot of emails which you might not want cluttering your main inbox.

>Also gotta find out what mods are currently the meta...
Worthy Heroes/Summod/Magic Enhanced are the most popular around here.

Quite a few games still play vanilla dominions, or just Worthy Heroes (which is basically vanilla).

Recruiting for a new EA memegame. Will use summeme, meme heroes and meme arena, as well as Observers mod, which adds a nation of Observers in a province separated from the rest of the map. They get stealthy999 mindless immobile spies in all other provinces and 1gem research0 eyes of god.

It'll be a regular game until turn 36. On turn 37, all remaining nations except for Observers are set AI. You win if your AI wins. Or if you claimed enough thrones by turn 37, I guess.

Meme builds are welcome, encouraged and probably necessary. Map will be generated in cartographic memevision and modified to accommodate Observers.

>>182573373
People will be set AI by changing their e-mails.

This is exactly what's going to happen, but players will assist their AIs by taking 36 turns, and maybe grabbing some thrones/eliminating other players.

Then the game will end in a draw, or the one with the most thrones will win. Admin will just send turns to the server and post his turns in the thread so the people could watch.

Observers will be isolated through map editor.

Stupid questions, anon. I'm disappointed in you.

I have previously stated "Fuck MA Ermor," for its bullshit skeleton-spam and invulnerability to early siege due to its low supply provinces and immunity to starvation. I stand by this statement.

I would now like to append this assertion with, "Fuck Ry'leh and its illithid horsecrap," on account of how 20 of those fuckers can paralyze 40-60 of my most elite units before I can even get a hit in, with no penalties.

that entire raid battle reports image is only like forty bats split into several little groups of ten or so. You could easily have readied to repel them especially since I attacked last turn so you knew what was up. Speaking of which don't blame me for preventable sitesearcher deaths when a simple start in back and retreat script handles that.

I honestly expected most of those to fail, believing you would use tiny hirdmen squads and since they were VERY small parties. Like could concievably lose to 1pd parties. Maybe that is what happened since I will not be able to look at the turn until I get home from work but these super light raids in year 2 with no mage support should not have been allowed to be freely effective, and that certainly is not Ulm's fault that they were. To me you are coming off here a bit like some LoL player who blames their team while missing their skillshots. Sure, maybe the others could be weaker players and it is MAYBE possible that it is enough on its own to cost the game but that does not call for aggressive angry deflection tactics while ignoring one's own errors. Dunning-Kruger much?

Seriously they were pretty tiny strike forces just hoping to get lucky against the underprepared despite forwarning because it was a cheap gamble to go for.

If you're left alone for long enough (which is easy when you're an underwater nation), you can build up enough of a force to stomp anything but 100% of another nation's military, which is never going to be brought to bear against you on account of this being a game where for the most part, you have to guard against all possible directions at once.

Since the AI cant use spells its fairly obvious the nation with the best expansion and strongest bless/sacreds will win.

Did you just assume AI can cast blessing?

>>182584856
Ai is also known to attack each other randomly
>>
>>182584856

I'm new to this game, and trying to learn the magic system is kind of a headache. I did some reading and people say spells like Rain of Stones and Earthquake are really good, but don't they kill my troops too?

What about vanheim and china?

Who said you had to bring an army?

If I bring more than one mage, will one mage kill the other with a spell?
>>
>>182588608
The one mage may kill himself with the spell. But you could protect them with items, or even not care that you lose one or two E2A1s because your enemy lost 10 mages and 40 troops.
>>
>>182588608
It's very likely that a human mage casting ros will kill himself.
Give him a good armor to avoid this.
You can also bring more mages or ros casters, but don't forget giving them armors.

As I understand it, you just send the one dude to nuke the entire battlefield.

Currently there's Ys, Pan and Bandar left. Bandar is the smallest, sandwiched between Ys and Pan who look about equal size.

How much is the damage from the F Dome? Do you get a message if/when it triggers?

You tell me. I'm trying to figure out how I can watch my chosen AI. Though running the first 36 turns of a test game is hefty....

Your H3 prophet will cast Holy Avenger, spam Sermons, and start throwing around Smites before it drops a single Bless.

Other H3s are much more reasonable.
