I just got the shield of cthulu and whenever I walk in a direction it autodashes a few moments later and keeps autodashing. This does not happen if start pressind A or D in the air or enter any other directional input while holding down A or D.
It's annoying as fuck and I want it to end, how do I do that?

I had the same problem on Ubuntu. This seems to be distro related for some reason because I just launched terraria (on ZorinOS XFCE) and it no longer dashes automatically. It doesn't happen on KDE Neon or ZorinOS Lite, but happens on Ubuntu 17 (Unity), from my experience.

What version of terraria are you using?
What other accessories do you have? Does it happen if you wield nothing other than the shield (including no armour)? Since I'm not sure if I tested it correctly, I just equipped my character with the shield and nothing else. Maybe there's actually an item that causes this to happen on the Linux version, like boots or something which interferes with movement.
I haven't found a solution other than not using it, back when I was on Ubuntu. Apparently moving to a different distro works, for some bizarre reason, but I wouldn't recommend changing your OS just to play a single game without an irrelevant bug since everything else works fine.

The game is wonky because it's not really a Linux game, it actually uses the windows game and comes with scripts to launch it and translate directX into openGL. It basically uses some components of WINE and is merely an emulation.

tl;dr the game's engine is shit because directX is garbage and the port to Mac/Linux is a wine emulation. Report the bug to devs and hope they'll fix it.

Basically I tried to make a "lava lock" (IE an airlock with lava) but I could not get rid of lava very well while keeping the level around it near max.
So what I did was use two portal stations, one inside and one out. And if you take the gems, it locks you in or out and they have to be replaces in order to get back in. I also had an auto lock down feature along with an announcement system to warn if lava ever got into the hallway.
