Hello, I have a question
I love combat sims, but never tried DCS before. I see a warning in the OP to not buy newer modules from steam because they don't work in stand-alone.

Is DCS World not standalone? Or do you mean the older version which used to just be called 'DCS: A10, Black Shark, etc'?

Also, how is it? I love ridiculously pointless complex flight sims, but even I would have to start with the F-5E, and that's 30 bucks. Worth the price?
>>
>>181688997

It's just DCS: World
Why people use stand-alone is to get stuff faster. for example new module releases, and it takes loads loads of time to get on steam. And hours counting is just cancer for me.

Got the Mig15bis in the sale.
Although its kind of useless I don't regret a thing, the experience is aesthetic to the nth degree just doing airfield circuits in it.
Who else #Hardcorefagot?
>>
>>181736640
less combined arms
much more tank simulation
still there's some combined arms and strategy
much cheaper
much better graphics (SB's engine is horribly outdated and overpriced at this point)
100% realistic and interactive interiors
mega-immersive, especially when you are getting shot
If you wanna tank and feel like you're in a tank this is the way to go, if you wanna role-play combined arms SB is the way to go but it has mostly generic interiors.
biggest fucking gripe is no multiplayer unlike SB

This, an F16 module will be nothing without being able to customize your DTC, being able to see the designated radius of the enemy anti-air on your HSD, being able to program the weapons, etc. It's like making a Gripen module without data-link.

The flight model still needs some love, but it's come along, and it's already arguably the most fun chopper to fly. I'm torn between the SA342 and the UH-1H as to which one is more fun

Flying the Gazelle has killed my love for the Ka-50, Yeah it's fun slinging missiles at 8km and wiping out a whole column but the Gazelle with it's visibility, better optics, RWR and agility just is so much more fun.

Not to mention how you can be a serious threat to low flying aircraft rather than some slow target like most helicopters.
I wish all the loadouts were on one aircraft so you could switch loadouts at a FARP or something instead of having to jump into a totally new helicopter.

As for the FM, yes it needs a bit of work still and there are some bugs (as every module has) but it's nowhere near as bad as some people whine about it.
Shit like comparing how it flies to the Huey. uh excuse me? The Huey is a fucking beast with two large and incredibly efficient rotors and a stabilizer bar on top. It's going to fly completely different to a tri-rotor light helicopter with a Fenestron tail.

And then you get the guys who have flown a Robinson or compare it to other light civilian helicopters and point out that it doesn't fly like them.
Yeah of course it won't, they don't have the sophisticated stabilization system and a flight director.
It's like moaning the Mirage flies on rails compared to a MiG-21, yeah no shit it has FBW.

I think there are some issues with the general stability of the aircraft, but all the people whining that it flies 'unlike' a helicopter are full of shit.

Sorry, I don't know anything about panels, I just find it very hard to understand how can it cost this much.
I think most people who have control panels makes it themselves, and compared to prices in links, it's waaay cheapier to DIY(Do it yourself)
They have dedicated subforum for it

But if you don't have ability to DIY, you're fucked I guess..

1.) The game has a written manual, and
1a.) Said manual is more than 100+ pages in length, or
1b.) Game manual is more than one file. Or else,
2.) User must reference real world data and procedures to properly enjoy the game.

Also, user must spend more time complaining about broken/unrealistic/missing features and trying to tweak game settings than actually playing the game.

There are tutorials and missions for the planes in the free version. Actually, I'm not sure if there are missions or not for the TF-51d, but there are tutorials for it. As for not having a full set up, you need at least some type of joystick, preferably with some kind of little throttle lever if its a cheap one. It's really not worth it with keyboard and mouse only

Rudder is used to keep the plane flying straight (relative to the oncoming slipstream).

Slipping occur when rolling into a turn, and may even happen during the turn as well.
Single engine (powerful) prop planes will sideslip when the plane is flown outside trimmed setting as well.

Instrument is the ball, if the ball is outside the center, you're slipping or sliding. Step into the direction the ball is at.

Also the main rolling device used at high AoA for swept wing aircraft.
>>
>>181828590
Thanks for the explication. I've looked some videos too. I've just got my rudder pedals and the movement is counter-intuitive at best right now because i never used them before.

Vietnam ops preferably.

I don't know how to make DCS missions but if I could I would do something like this:

A large strike package of AI B-52s and AI F-4s (both SEAD and fighter-sweep) take off from the south air base and roll into a target zone as per the best DCS can approximate USAF doctrine ( SEAD first, then fighters and bombers.

A flight of MiG-21s (us) needs to intercept and prevent destruction of ground targets/shoot down USAF planes. There would be ground radar/SAM support akin to what North Vietnam had. It would be cool if we didn't know the exact location of the intended strike but had to receive updates from a GCI/ground radars and then had to make a likely guess or favorable merge. You could also throw in some MiG-15s to approximate the 17s if somebody didn't own the MiG-21.

You could also throw in some USAF/South Vietnamese F-5s for human players on blue, just to make the air-combat interesting.

It's come a long way, tanks feel pretty good to use, weapons feel nice and there's plenty of variety of vehicles to choose from, some better than others. You can even command around units and take a somewhat commander role.
It's no Steel Armor/Beasts but it's pretty solid. Unfortunately there is basically no damage modelling outside of a basic HP system.

The main problem is the AI, currently in DCS the AI can see through trees and they provide no cover.
This is changed in 2.1/Normandy (which is a big thing foir CA and Helicopters alike) in that trees are collidable and block LOS.
and of course in current Caucasus, the terrain is awful and either very flat or very jagged, another thing which is changing in 2.5 with the new Caucasus terrain.

It's fun to mess around in currently though, just don't expect a heavy tank sim experience.
I picked it up dirt cheap so no regrets here.

>>181869107
I think it's a different kind of FLIR to what's on current aircraft, has a more realistic blur and in some cases vehicles look (subjectively) better through it. More importantly it completely eats your frame rate.

Had to do something else but so far so good. 2hrs in and we destroyed a good amount of their shit already. Those 8 cruise missiles luckily got a full SA-5c group and eliminated the biggest threat in the West. Now the Frogfoots have destroyed a few SAMs and opened a gap so that I can send my Mig-29s from Armenia through and intercept their Migs that are trying to kill my AEW. Lost one Frogfoot to a SAM.

As far as DCS

If you want to do the "study sim meme" I would say

F-5 for people who want to learn ACM first and foremost, since the F-5 is light, agile and forces you to dogfight.

Mirage 2000 for people who want to engage in modern air combat.

Mig-21 for people who like a historical plane which is both aesthetic and capable.

A-10 for ground attack and CAS memes.

Or just get FC3 to meme out on bluefaggggg
>>
>>181886592
Thank you!

I keep hearing FC3 has 'easy' flight models for their planes because they're not modeled as highly. Is that true? Does that mean I should actually be starting out on those things and working my way up to Mig 21 and F-5?
>>
>>181887102
FC3 FMs are all fine apart from the MiG-29 & Su-33. They're easy to fly because they're modern jets with oodles of thrust, not because they have 'easy FMs'.
>>
>>181887406
Pretty much this, the FC3 don't have advanced systems modeling but they do model the flight characteristics reasonably enough

I think I still have my Janes Fighter's Anthology handbook somewhere. Is that considered rare material and should I consider getting it scanned?
>>
>>181896164
First time I hear it. What is that?
>>
>>181896353
It was a handbook that came with the boxed copy of Fighter's Anthology (Basically all of Janes 90's-era combat sims mashed into one game)

While its simplified as fuck to cover the fact that you could fly 90+ planes in that game, it's still a thick handbook that went over all the quirks and maneuvers that you were likely to encounter. Starting with powering on your aircraft from a dead start (it was very simple, just turning on the avionics and starting the engine) to taking off from a carrier, even what to do if you had a catapult failure at certain speeds.

What I remember most about it, and I would have to find it and look this one up: it went through the basics of every flight maneuver. So if you found yourself in a scissors with another aircraft; you would pause the game, turn to this page, and read up on the next turns you had to make in order to come out on top. If you were curious how to solve a problem that kept getting you waxed, it went into a ton of detailed flight instructions for every size aircraft in escaping common disadvantages. Such as J-Turns.

I found what I think is a scanned version of it here: http://jkpeterson.net/fa/misc/FA_Manual.zip but it's not quite what I remember from the physical copy that came in my collector's edition. I think some chapters are out of order. When I get the chance, I"ll look for it. I think some of my commonly used pages got torn out of my handbook.
>>
>>181897174
In particular, Chapter 5 of that scanned set is what I remember using the most, but my chapter 5 in the handbook and the chapter 5 in that scanned manual I remember being different.

But then again, I have not looked at that manual in at least twelve years, maybe even longer. USAF 97 was my first sim game, and Fighter's Anthology was my second followed closely by Comanche 3. So things have probably blurred together to the point where none of it makes sense anymore.
>>
>>181897653
If it's very different, and you have time to spare, scan some goodies which are not in this one.
I put that zip chapters in mega repo for now. https://mega.nz/fm/esUwgCRb

>>
>>181899751
I'm glad to help. Fighter's Anthology is great because it assumed you knew nothing and needed handholding for everything. When I first played the game (I was 10 at the time), I needed all the help I could get. I remember the original game having tutorial missions for each and every maneuver in that handbook. Sadly, it no longer runs on Windows PCs (speed is tied to processor speed).
I also think it was one of the only flight simulators made by EA, but I could be wrong..

How was lock on flaming cliffs able to survive, and falcon didn't?
>>
>>181903458
>When was the peak of simulation games? if you knew anything about them
I was probably too young to make value judgements at the time.
First sim from memory was Falcon AT, that was on a school computer. Followed by MS Flight 95. Around the same time was this really arcade-y game that everyone played on BBS' back in the day called "Air Warrior". I think the early 90's era was too primitive to have a fun simulation experience unless it was just an arcade shooter like Air Warrior was, but I do remember things like fifty online players getting in B-25's, assembling into boxes and raiding London (No penalty for friendly fire!) and that kind of nonsense.

If I had to make a judgement from what I remember, I definitely think the late 90's were the best time for simulations. If you wanted a WW2 sim, there was Microsoft Combat Simulator, which was really only usurped by IL2

If you wanted a modern combat sim, Janes were the de-facto standard of aircraft information at the time, and were extremely thorough. They were also being made by Electronic Arts as a contractor (The good EA, the development side EA that made things like Need for Speed High Stakes, not the stab-you-in-the-dick EA that killed Bullfrog). So in terms of gameplay, they were the tightest and felt the best. It also had lots of aircraft. If you wanted to fly almost any aircraft in the world, a janes game probably let you do it. I still want a modern sim that doesn't charge me out the ass that lets me fly the kind of planes that most countries on Earth fly

Civilian sims, that was definitely Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 (had the most planes out-of-the-box) and Flight Unlimited 2 (Looking Glass Studios, as in Thief and System Shock). Flight Unlimited 2 being the first sim I remember which supported dense air traffic, as in waiting on the tarmac for 30 minutes to take-off in showering hail dense air traffic. Maybe I should dump my CD copy of that someday, I still have it

Maybe it's just nostalgia.

>Why was it dropped?

Janes as a military cataloging company disbanded in the late 00's. They wouldn't suck Lockheed-Martin's dick about the F-35 and F22 (Janes wanted to say that the upcoming SU-35 Fullback could totally wipe the F22 in a fight). So Lockheed-Martin pulled out of them, which crippled them financially.

Because they were crippled, that meant no more contracting video games despite how profitable they were. No video games meant they had to profit off of magazine sales regarding information that was no longer insider because they lost their Lockheed Martin contacts.

One thing lead to another, and now they are no more. That's how we lost one of the best combat sim producers in the video game industry.

MicroProse.
The only company on Earth I can imagine that is more mis-managed than Enron. They went from being a market leader in 1994 to a bankrupt shell of a company in 1999. They had the Tycoon series, and they had X-Com. Yet somehow they still nosedived into the ground despite having so many hit-selling franchises.
>>
>>181904925
It's difficult to even call Microprose a 'fucking who' publisher.
They're more like a gaggle of retards who happened to form a publishing company by sheer chance of an application miraculously appearing out of the ether and submitting itself. Mail was still sent to an address, and assumingly one of the little mongs running Microprose could still manage to shove a handful of poo into an envelope and send it out to their developers up until the time Hasbro sent them to their asylum where I'm sure they remain to this day.

It's not nostalgia, look at recent games and tell me they're not shit. People don't care about quality anymore.

So it seems there isn't company without a smoke, ED, Micropose, Janes, and that smoke costs us our loved hobby. terrifying

The one thing I will give modern games is that it's nice having a fully interactive cockpit.

Yes, for a long period simulators were the prestige halo releases. Its why Microsoft were so involved for a while. They went into MS FS/CFS for the same reason they ended up doing Forza later on. At was at least as much about the credibility of the platform as anything else (PC doesn't have a good flight simulator?).

Honestly I just fly it around more than anything. Not to mention a lot of practice with the navigation and stuff. "Nonstop" with regards to DCS just means anytime I launched DCS (which is not as frequent as I like) I'd just fly the mig-21.

Most of my combat stuff is just little one-on-ones I set up in the mission builder or some ground attack with rockets for fun. Never feel like I have the time to do the campaign (which I hear is pretty eh) or create a really indepth mission.

Project Reality is the far superior option and will be forever.
Not only does it have a wealth of content but Squad's tryhard approach to a milsim shooter looks and plays worse than PR ever did.

Yeah ok you can come back and tell us all of this when its out of early access which the way things are going it's going to be in 20 years.

Any fuckin autist in a basement can make a 2d pixelhunting "sim" with 500 "different" planes in a few weeks and it would still have more fun features than any flight sim in the 90s.

Should I stop buying DLC on steam for DCS world when it apparently doesn't work with DCS 2.0?

Will this ever be fixed?

Is stand-alone DCS even worth it to re-buy all the DLC I bought?

On what tank? T-62? There are two means to estimate the range using the TKN-3, either using the Stadia in the bottom right of the pic, slotting the tank inside (it must be fully visible from its tracks, otherwise you're going to be estimating), M60 Tank is 2.8 meters high, at exactly 1200 meters, it will fit at 1200 meters inside the stadia.

The 2nd method is using the vertical mil scales on the center. The M60 Patton is 3.6 meters wide, at exactly 1000 meters it will fit perfectly between two lines. You can estimate the range using that if its bigger or closer easily. Otherwise experience helps estimating ranges easily and after a while you'll only make 1-3 correctional shots before figuring out the range (ASSUMING you're using a low-velocity round such as HEAT). If you are using SABOT than ranging is next to useless unless the enemy is 2000+ meters away from you because you can lay the range to 1200-1600 meters and you will always hit, the 3UBM5 has extremely high velocity and almost no fall and is full-proof even without figuring out the range

For the M60, use the coincidence rangefinder (get into the commander's station, press C until you get the coincidence rangefinder with massive magnification, it will be pointed where the gun is pointing, use scroll until the target you want to range isn't blurry and is clear, than input the range on the FCS computer and tell your gunner to shoot)

Hmm. Maybe there's a tiny bit of hope...

The game has the MiG-29A, which is actually one of the best and newest external models in the game. It looks absolutely gorgeous. the S is new also, but the A is just the most aesthetic plane ever.

Its one of the few reasons I boot up DCS. I enjoy flying it even against Amraam equpped F-15's on the 104th.

The PFM is basically the only thing I'm looking forward too in DCS. (F-14 also but I feel like its a year away probably)

That's good. WVR you have the advantage in T/W, maneuverability, and the helmet + r-73 combo.

I use the two R-27R/ER's to make them go defensive and then get into R-73 range by any means possible. MiG-29 can handle some really heavy G-loads even while going really fast and with all your weapons and fuel attached. I find it much easier to defeat missiles in the Fulcrum vs the Flanker.

Could anyone do quick rundown on migs?

Don't forget to use all the capabilities of it, and you're the winner. Vertical Scan helped me a lot of times to get enemy I lost sight in.
Btw very big tip:
You can IFF with EO, by flashing the radar. just tap it on, check if A changed to AFR quick, and turn it off

>MiG-15: Scared the west because slavs are dumb and shouldn't be able to make good planes. Was a worthy foe for the Sabre over Korea.

>MiG-17: Bigger, faster MiG-15. Got some kills in Vietnam

>MiG-19: Biggerer, fasterer MiG-17, first MiG with AA missiles. Got blown the fuck out by jews when fighting arabs

>MiG-21: The AK-47 of fighter jets. Cheap as fuck and exported everywhere in ridiculous numbers. Did great in Vietnam, did horrible after that because it was fighting jews and 4th gens

>MiG-23: Absolute shit. In theory an upgrade over the MiG-21 but was way behind the 4th gen fighters it would end up fighting. Horrible K/D record of like 25-100 or something. Thanks again jews.

>MiG-25: The literal best MiG. Scared the west shitless cuz they thought it was a mach 3 super fighter. Ended up being a mach 2.8 (could go 3.2 if it wanted to explod its engines) pure interceptor. Did some cool shit like piss off the jews when soviets flew out of egypt and over israel and the jews couldn't do anything about it. Shot down an F-18 in desert storm, hit an F-15 with a missile. Lots of engagments ended with F-15's shooting all their missiles at the MiG-25 but it just runs away and survives. Generally a giant pain in the ass to fight even though it was 3rd gen.

>MiG-27: Ground attack varient of the MiG-23. Bad payload, bad range. Pretty shit. Su-24 fixed these issues for the soviet military

>MiG-29: The first soviet 4th gen. World class thrust to weight and maneuverability, paired with 3rd gen-tier radar and avionics. Designed to be a frontline interceptor that would have number superiority and heavy GCI/Awacs support. Was never ever used this way by any of the nations that actually went in combat with it, so its record is absolute shit. 0-5 in gulf war, 0-5 over yugoslavia, 0-5 against ethopian Su-27's. Fulcrum had a hard life. Sad!

Yaks were great fighters but only at low level combat being around 1-3k meters, while the MiG-3 could go over 640kmh at about 7k which other aircraft like the 109 and Spitfire could only dream of doing 610kmh, and the MiGs heavy body stopped it from working well at where the real combat was so the Russians dropped the MiG-3 from production.

So when the AMRAAM spam starts, what's your usual procedure?

Is it bank away and increase throttle or speed up? Or just get into range and dogfight them to death?

offical fulcrum strat of the defunct /simg/ mig29 gang known as da boyz:
>max fucking speed
>9G manuvers in every direction while still generally closing the distance with the enemy
>know how to keep the enemy at the absolute limit of the radar gimble so you don't lose lock because lol fulcrum has no SA
>use the ER's just to get them to go defensive
>do this till you get into 73 range
>win

ancient manuscript describing a highly secretive tactic reserved for the most elite members of da boyz:

>take one ER and one ET
>lock onto enemy
>launch ET at absolute maximum range and IMMEDIATELY turn off radar and split S away
>laugh as the enemy flies right into the ET because they thought you disengaged and were running away

Hey people, help fellow ka-50 pilot. I heat trim clicking but it doesn't trim, why is that
>>
>>182068994
Assuming that you don't have a convenient mountain to hug:
Easy way: place it precisely on your 3-9 line, make sure you are always lower then the missile, go fast and drop chaff in several big portions. As soon as the signal from the missile stops increasing on your RWR, you are safe. It means that AMRAAM lost track but will still trigger your RWR for some time.
Hard way: go full afterburner, do high-g turns left and right while continuing to fly in the general direction of your enemy, dump some chaff. Make sure your altitude is lower than the missile.
Ace pilot way: do a proper barrel roll while still keeping a radar lock to guide your semi-active missiles.
You goal is to to push the missile's radar out of it's gimbal range while confusing it with ground clutter (that's why you need to stay lower) and chaff spam.

da boyz used to get on Blue Flag with upwards of 8 members all using the /дa бoйз/ tag.
They wrecked shit and this made blue babbies really mad, mad enough that a couple of the OG boyz got banned for their bantz.

They would continue flying however, under covert callsigns, but /дa бoйз/ tag was all but dead. Eventually the 3 founding memebers of da boyz stopped coming to /simg/ and the TS.

However, rumors say that da boyz still fly once in a while, so you never know when you could have a punished boyz member on your wing... or on your tail.

There are two modes for trim operation: single click trim and quickly release the cyclic (return to neutral position because your joystick don't have a force feedback) or press and hold trim and move cyclic to the desired position. If you just click on trim without releasing stick it won't work.

Even if you click trim and return to centre, you are still compounding control inputs since you were fighting the autopilot before you trimmed. The correct way to do it is:
>hold trimmer (this deactivates autopilot while leaving the stability channels still on)
>fly helicopter the way you want it trimmed
>release trimmer
>centre stick

How quickly you have to move the stick to centre depends on the trimmer setting you have on in the options. It's recommended that you turn on central position trimmer mode; that way when you release the trimmer, the stick goes dead until you return it to centre. Without that, you have half a second to return to centre otherwise your stick input gets added on top of your trim.

Does anyone flying the Fulcrum experience an 'offset' of the players cockpit and planes motion of travel?
