Blame the Stellaris kids.
/civ4xg/ was kept alive by RTS and city-builders after they abandonned it, and now that Stellaris is trendy again, they're trying to reclaim a general that they all left months ago.
That's ungrateful, and I won't stand it.

You'll see that as soon as Stellaris dies again, they'll all leave, and we'll have to talk about SupCom and Cities Skylines again to stay desperately alive.

>>
>>181557779
It's kinda unique I can't really describe it well, you would unlock units/buildings/spells as part of a f2p model as cards. These could be summoned/used using mana with the required amount of orbs of a certain element: shadow, nature, ice and fire.

Each card would have it's uses ie being able to paralyse or heal units.

Nature would have crowd control and healing generally, Fire would be raw damage, ice was for turtling and shadow was sacrificial for extra stuff like double damage at the expensive of that unit's life after x seconds. Shredding units for extra mana and so on.

Playing a game as Commonwealth of Man in Utopia, with a twist challenge: want to keep the UNE happy because they are my kohai and you are in it together. Currently their relations are pretty good at 146, but we're both smack dab next to some annoying lizard people known as the Athanebian that nobody likes and east are Enigmatic Observers which are pretty friendly for now but obviously aren't conductive towards making a centralized empire on my particular arm.

How should I deal with the lizard menace? They live in at the moment unusable arctic worlds which makes full on anschluss undeseriable at the moment. Don't want to make the UNE uncomfy, even if they also rightfully dislike the lizard menace.
>>
>>181581585
Damn. I've played so many games as the Commonwealth of Man, UNE is always on the other end of the galaxy.

If I could ask for one thing, it'd be for a "Colony" civic, where the game acknolages that the empire is the colony of an other empire, same race, homeworld is the other empire's homeworld, and they would spawn near each other.

Take out the lizardmen as the protector of Earth, neuter the lizards away so the UNE don't get upset.

Yeah oligarchy in case you don't get a Scientific Leap (2x chance if Fanatic materialist and x1.5 if scientist leader), so next election in 50 years will likely give you the it.

I'd go so far as to suggest:
fanatic materialist, xenophile (research treaties)
technocracy (research options), mechanist so your materialist faction will be really happy and give you influence (also 5% reduction in maint costs)
Oligarchic until you have a scientific leap leader and then go dictatorship and synth the leader never dies.

That'll give you the most science.

I'm using kinetics and +hp upgrade for ships. They're using the shield and what??? I thought kinetics were supposed to be the counter to shields.

Don't even get me started on the fact that there is no luxury resource in the galaxy that benefits the Vodyanoi or that the only planet with the yellow strategic resource in the galaxy is the Riftborn homeworld.

There is fucking nothing to see in space and no wind or anything to throw you off course, and if there is getting thrown off by an orbit of neptune isn't enough to show a human-visible parallax, just have a radar and make the ship pilot itself the pilot is only relevant when you think the ship is fucking itself over or MAYBE in combat.

>>181615541
You don't need to 'bring a spaceship' through an asteroid field, you could chuck a hundred ships through the entire belt at random and all but maybe one of them would be unscathed when it arrived at the other side.
This is why film majors shouldn't be pilots.

That you can't navigate by because moving an entire neptune orbit sideways gives a parallax so small even for a star only one (1) light year away you can't distinguish it with your eyes.
>>
>>181615712
>Yeah. Except, you know. Stars, planets, nebulaes...
That's what you have sensors for. They can detect all of that long before your eyes can.
There is no good reason to have an exposed bridge on a warship, just slap it somwhere in the heavily armored guts of the ship and pilot via sensors.

>>181615424
I may understand it in case of some short-range ones, like personal shuttles for travelling between ships etc but only to the degree it happens now with planes and otherwise yeah, sensors, cameras and consoles are what you need for flying, not staring at the sights beyond your cockpit's window. Hell, a display screen hooked to those sensors/cameras acting like a window rather than actual window exposing the cockpit to hazards would be the better idea.

A spaceship is not a motorcycle or even a car. A human being gets no physical feedback from manoeuvring in space, he can only judge his relative position to objects in space visually. And eyes simply aren't good enough when you have two (or more) fuckhuge, irregularly shaped space objects to keep from bumping into each other at +140,000km/h.
>>
>>181613853
>>181613721

>>
>>181616027
>but there should at least be a viewing bridge as well at least as a back up, what is your instruments and computers are malfunctioning
If you'd have to rely on actual windows of the bridge for navigation, you're already fucked. It works on sea IRL, because ships are relative to each other in space in two dimensions (and even then you rely to a great part on radars and whatnot) but add another dimension and you're fucked as it's very unlikely you'll be even able to see enemy vessel without turning around and being even more of a target and that's assuming that you fight at distances where direct look at the enemy ship through the window means shit - because it doesn't have to, it may be that you're exchanging railgun slugs or shit through distances of kilometres.
>>
>>181616176
If your computers are fucked, then you won't be able to control the ship.
>>
>>181616176
You CAN'T see where you're going in space until you're almost there, at which point you don't need to see where you're going, which brings me to the first point - there's nothing to throw you off course in space. You launch, you sleep, you wake before arriving. The pilot needs to do nothing, his job is that of a metro driver - to step in when the automatic driver shits itself, and in this case, only when it both shits itself AND there was a massive body in the middle of nowhere - and even then, if your computers are dead, you're fucked because you don't know where you are and how far you've been thrown off course, and won't know until you're ten thousand solar systems off-course.

Hell, even WW2 battleships fought outside of visual range. The few times they weren't being sunk by aircraft that is.
>>
>>181616323
Fighter jets exchange volleys of missiles at tens of kilometers already, a capital ship in space would start firing from thousands if not ten of thousands or more away because there's no drag, turbulence, or gravitational interference, just lead, aim, and fire for guarenteed hits.
>>
>>181616268
Exactly my point. That's why I say that some short-range shuttle to, say, move some personnel or supplies across distance of several kilometres between one ship and another/a station could work on eyeball mk I alone when it comes to navigation, but flying in combat or at greater distances, assuming we go by stylistics of typical sci-fi battle and it won't be just a slugfest between two brittle snails in space requires sensor suites - computers cracking trajectories and stuff (and likely even those snails require such).
>>
>>181616430
>>181616431
Yup, thanks for adding arguments for my point.

Anyway, I start to suspect that the anon who thought that just looking out the window would be enough for a space combat had typical images of sci-fi dogfighting in mind when in the movies it's spacecrafts at a distance of 20 metres to each other, just unloading series of glowing bolts.

Ok that's a good point, but my original point was anon said there's is no physical feedback from spaceships and there are, whether or not you can survive them or have negated them using artificial gravity notwithstanding.

>Did Stellaris devs fixed the absolutely retarded blemish on otherwise pretty good game that are sectors? Preferably, with fixed meaning "they kicked out the idiot who put it in and then deleted the crap"?
You can "fix" sectors by only using 1 giant sector, and only giving a planet to the sector once you've got 5 pops & built the capital, all the resource buildings and all the special buildings that require a capital (ie, 10% mineral/energy bonus, all the level 2 research facilities) and telling the sector to not redevelop.

Once you've done that they never fuck up your planets because they aren't allowed to fuck up. All they do is upgrade stuff when it becomes available, and be a giant bank for you to take money out of if you need it with the influence reclaiming.

The game itself is still tedious and boring as fuck though.

You can chokepoint in EL too, by having a combat field with one enemy tile on it. It's harder to do because there are way less impassable tiles than civ5/6. But EL AI is no less retarded than civ5 AI, at least the latter doesn't get direct bonuses to units as a part of handicap.

Obviously you could get overrun by huge fucking armies of strong units, but judicious use of terrain allowed smaller armies with good backup to eat armies five times their size on the defense - which is how it should be, not like Civ V or VI where smaller armies were usually just better after you went bigger than about 12 units.

Not really. The choice between simultaneous and consecutive turns is a choice between having to compete with AI and/or other players for clicks or having to wait for them to finish their turn.

Holy shit, are you retarded? I've had a game of EL which went into very late game, because I disabled most of easy modo victories. The turns were taking longer than Civ5 Vox Populi with its beefed up AI with max number of civs on the biggest map. Because Unity was totally made for processing all civs each with 10+ regions each, all AI governors of owned regions and all armies moving at once. And this was basically beating AI babies, the war with any tough AI would be even worse micromanagement-wise.

I didn't say it was RTS, it plays like goddamn RTS. The combat field layout entirely depends on a tile which initiated the combat and with simultaneous turns you can't predict which tile it is, unless using interface bugs.

>getting even more mad
Pathetic.
>>
>>181625769
>Oh so you were "just" attacking civ5 combat in a discussion about civ5 vs. EL combat? That totally means you didn't defend EL combat!
It does, because the other person was raising Civ V / VI as an example of what it should be as it "made a lot more sense and felt smoother". Just because EL combat is trash doesn't mean Civ V's isn't.
>>
>>181625769

You literally can tho. You select an army, hover over another one holding RMB and it shows you the potential combat grid.

>>181626025
And even if it didn't RNG combat generation for scrimishes between armies depending on terrain is a very popular trick in KB and HOMM series which EL seemingly took a lot of inspiration from, this game just expands that to it's logical extreme.

Bit of a hybrid that one. Early missions in SP can feel like CB but later on as the map opens up and starts spawning enemies it slowly transforms into a more 4x game, especially due to how mines work, needing to be surveyed first before you can build one.

>Because AI is so basic it doesn't even matter most of the time.
AI does a very good job mid and early game of providing challenge and engaging gameplay, while true that lategame war AI is lackluster this is almost inevitable in such complex games with so many moving parts. EL AI is one of the better examples in fact.
>You bitch about carpets in civ5
Everyone you disagree with on 4chan is not in fact the same guy.
>EL doesn't even have limits on amount of armies outside of gold upkeep
I like that, less arbitrary asspulls, more real and manageble limits. Also in EL it's not dust but strategics and production that limit the army most. Because you can spam a lot of basic armies but if your opponent is decked out in strat res, he will witpe the floor with you.
>The only limited factor is a shitty interface for the players
Your taste's shitty mate. EL interface might hide things from newbies, but it's very, very efficent.
> AI incapability to focus on gold effectively
Nah, the AI is plenty good in dust production, it's the production focus that it lacks for lategame war.

Only because of literal direct bonuses to the units at higher difficulties.
>less arbitrary asspulls,
>army limit depending on the population is an asspull

>Also in EL it's not dust but strategics and production that limit the army most.
Dust is a global resource, production is the local one. It's pretty hard to churn out a full army each turn with production only, but it's easy with several dust cities.
>Because you can spam a lot of basic armies but if your opponent is decked out in strat res, he will witpe the floor with you.
He won't if you can shit out an army each turn. But AI doesn't "deck out", so the only limiting spam factor is incapable AI and interface.
>Your taste's shitty mate. EL interface might hide things from newbies, but it's very, very efficent.
Yeah, taking a second to fade in for each window is the definition of very efficient interface. I especially like managing Academy (which doesn't even have scroll button and puts heroes in some bizarre order) with 15+ heroes hired. Works very well with micro-intensive roving jews heroes, which are shit as governors but very good at city recovery rate.

I'm a retard. In AoW3, should I basically have at least one exploration army for clearing mob camps and shit, several scouts (from summons?) and at least one stack running around defending my cities? It seems everything takes almost the same amount of time to build so I'm wondering if I should play this like Total War and just churn out more units as long as upkeep allows it, since cities seem basically defenseless on their own.

Don't get discouraged by that talk. There are plenty oldfags/grognards here who consider every 4x in the genre too easy, comes with having played thousands of hours of them.

In Endless games it's important that you pick one race and stick to it untill you master it, because constantly switching between them will make a new player confuse priorities that can be very different between them. Stick to one or at most two races and git gud at them. We can help but we can't teach/advice you on the entire roster, they are too different, ouside of Industry>everything thing.

Here's a playlist with useful guides on various systems of the game, if you are ok with video format.

When you decide what race you want to focus on come back here and we can give you more concrete tips.

If you are playing as Vodyani you have to disable pirates

For taking other planets you have to use your support ships equipped with siege modules. In the ship designer menu you will see a module with a spiky circle, it talks about reducing manpower or some shit. Equip your support ship with a bunch of those. Then park a bunch of those ships in orbit around your target planet. Turn by turn the planets manpower will be destroyed until it reaches zero. If you try to invade a planet without siege you are guaranteed to fail.
>>

>>181648853
I'm always playing on Endless because anything below is too easy.

Seems like you have a big macro problem. You need to think about what techs and building you need. For cravers for example, you need to focus early on colonization and military techs so you can expand fast.

Try to stick with one faction and get good with it, playstyles can vary greatly

Pirates only attack the player, it's dumb. Just annoying considering the first Vodyani quest already spawns 2 systems worth of pirates

When you park your first leecher over a minor faction in will be raped by the pirates that spawn in that same system. There is no way to defend it within the first 10 turns of the game. Then you have to waste time building a new leecher, with no essence to do anything, and now its turn 40 by the time you can produce a new ark.

The idea is that Vodyani don't spend their first 10 turns building infrastructure. They spend them building scout ships with self repair modules and rocket launchers to hunt pirates.

Just pick the Religious option at their quest start. You only need to "intercept" the rogue ship, as in not actually fight it that way. When you get it and bring it back to your hangar you can use it freely from then on, as in a COMPLETELY FREE second tier ship at the start of the game. It's fast as fuck too, so take it on a victory lap across the galaxy and conquer every minor faction you come across (pick bombardment as invasion strategy and remember to upgrade infantry), while making sure to refill its manpower every time. While it's not required, if you happen to find Tikanan or whatever it is that gives even better infantry trait when assimilated (i.e. conquered) you're basically set for life. Even if you don't get them you're going to hit system cap very quickly and since slavery and depletion bonuses are so ridiculous you'll be churning out more FIDSI than anyone else, and unlike others their systems don't rebel at 0 approval. You'll easily build all the wonders as well.

I also made the mistake of preparing "too much" for taking minor faction owned systems, but they're actually ridiculously easy to capture because in early game they have no defensive structures and they can ONLY use Bunker Down defensive strategy which is just a much inferior version of any strategy the actual major factions get. They can't use Conscription and pull manpower out of their ass for example. Doesn't apply to Cravers only, though obviously they have the easiest time with it. You'll save shitton of time and influence by conquering them.

It irritates me that you in games like Endless Space have to move along "paths" to get from one space to the other. Is there a game out there where you can actually move freely through the space without lanes?

I'm just popping by because I played Civ 5 for 4 hours the other day and wanted to know what I can do to make it a bit more fun.

I'm pretty garbage at these games, so I've been playing on the lower difficulties, but I've found that what I do during the game seems to not affect if I win or lose at all.

After 5 hours, I had like three different win conditions available for me and I could just pick one. Is this just an issue with the low difficulties?

In ES2 you can ignore lanes once you get Baryonic Shielding which is a really early game tech.

Not to mention Seeker type heroes get access to 1.5x / 3.0x free movement upgrade as their very first skill. With them as admirals direct movement is much faster than lanes. Though we have to wait for them to patch admiral EXP gain first so it's not absolute fucking shit.

War with both southern fucks and blue star past blue heart.

Blue heart is allied with north Red and purple feathers so I'll probably eat both red and blue pills at some point as they have a combined 7 worlds and purple is far enough away I likely won't give a shit until later.

What I really should do next is go after purple and light blue because they have my habitability.

You fucked up, somewhat.
You need a lot of free space and to build cities in a certain way to fully exploit pillars.
However, you're not going to put pillars everywhere 100% of the time. Specialized cities should have spots surrounded with districts with the appropriate pillar. Lords and Clans aint got shit on proper dust specialized Mage cities.

Here's the quick rundown. Despite having crazy early faith generation I wasn't able to get a religion. Then Gorgo and John Curtin joint DOWd me. I took one Ephesus, made peace with Curtin, and killed all of Gorgo's archers before making peace with her.

Then Curtin DOWd me again, at which point I took his capitol and left him one city, Melbourne.

Then Gorgo DOWd me again. I just wiped her last city out. Now everyone hates me but I almost control my entire continent. I think I'm going to go for a cultural victory.

Oh boy, these guys were fun to play as in Generals.

GLA led by Dr. Thrax
>UA: Fresh from the lamb: enemy units get damage per turn when they're in your lands. Or near your units. Or if they've been attacked by us.
>UU: Toxin Tractor: Weaker version of landships (ww1 tanks), double damage vs infantry, archer and cavalry units
>UB: Goat Farm Laboratories: smaller science boost than the research lab that it replaces but doubles attrition damage in the city it's built in

GLA led by Prince Kassad
>UA: Stealth is your enemy, and my ally: all land units are invisible to enemies unless next to them, or has attacked the previous turn
>UU: Jarmen Kell: an always-stealthed ranged unit that does double damage vs infantry
>UB: Tunnel networks: a bunker that's available earlier, and works like airports between cities

Someone do the bomb general, plz?
>>
I'm thinking of finally playing a Civ game for the first time. How immersive is it?

Which one should I get? Any other info for me to keep in mind?
>>
>>181697110
>how immersive
Give an example of two games you find immersive. This is an honest question. You can add mods onto the qualifier if you like.

>which one should I get
Either Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword (all expansions) or Civilization V: Brave New World (all expansions, the other DLC don't really matter). V is the 'modern' version (aka "get Attila" for Total War games). IV is the pinnacle of the 'old' version, besides debateably Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (aka "get Shogun II" for Total War games).

>any other info
If you've literally never played a Civilization or 4X game then play the tutorial once and then go for a game on Warlord; Chieftain and Settler are 'too easy', it's not about allowing errors at that difficulty it's about making it so that errors don't exist. Settler and Chieftain are like the easy version of Deity, they'll teach you tactics that simply don't work for any difficulty higher (Deity makes you learn cheese that no other difficulty really needs, or wants). If you've played a 4X game already skip the tut and play on Warlord or Noble if you're brave.
>>
Can you export food in Stellaris yet?
>>
>>181697783
This kinda makes me want to run a "Processing" civ that uses food pops and sells all the excess food off to other civilizations.

Probably fanatic militaristic, turn themselves into synthetics to stop eating, convert all remaining biological pops into food and then trade said food/food income to various civs.

>Give an example of two games you find immersive. This is an honest question. You can add mods onto the qualifier if you like.
Skyrim/New Vegas with the usual mods and pretty much every decent one which adds tedious gameplay/management (food, drink, sleep, weight management, etc.). I like it annoyingly realistic, even sacrificing performance for extra inconsequential NPCs because it just immerses me. I'll add that I think Skyrim is a shit game, but the best possible high-fantasy life simulator I have.

I also love the micromanagement and headcanon potential of XCOM.

I appreciate the inquisitive response.

Civilization won't fill this need without mods I'm afraid. The go-to for Civilization V in simulationism is Vox Populi. C2C (Caveman2Cosmos) for Civilization IV is by far the most simulationist, but beyond being likely too autistic (and a poor choice for beginners), its lag is lethal.

I figured, just letting you know where I stand. I'm prepared for a different and new experience all the same though.
>>
>>181698635
And I'll add that as long as I can make a somewhat personal attachment to what I'm doing, I should be entertained enough. How is the interactivity with other leaders.

Sorry if these are ignorant questions, like I said, completely new, and I'm trying to decide before this summer sale ends.
>>
>>181694798
Sure.
>UA: units damage nearby enemies upon death. Free great general when you research Dynamite
>UU: terrorist. Available with Dynamite, doesn't replace anything and doesn't obsolete. Cheap to produce and hits hard but dies after attacking. Becomes stronger after you research nuclear fission
>UI: demo trap. Can be built on any tile. Doesn't provide any extra yields. Enemies that step on it take heavy damage (can destroy them) but it needs to be repaired afterwards

I'd argue for Endless Legend, Fallen Enchantress:Legendary Heroes, Age of Wonders 3. Strategy games with quests and events.

>>
>>181700259
Endless Space 1&2 might be the only non-fantasy turn based 4x game with quests, but they're hardly civilization like.

Would love a "RP" heavy strategy game, other than endless legend/space 2. But that's a very nice game type.
>>
Hi,

I played Endless Legend around the time that it launched. I had some fun with it, but hated how the absolute best strategy was "go for an early military victory, then choose what win condition you want"

Was this fixed with the patches/expansions?

I'm considering picking up the expansions while they're on sale, and giving the game another try - but was curious if that's still the dominant strategy.
>>
>>181701312
Yeah, I'm starting to realize that what I was looking for was more along the lines of Age of Wonders 3 and the Endless Series after all. I'll probably come around to a civ game after being satiated by these type of games.

The only games that I know of that would fulfill all your requirements (4x, unit customization like xcom, quests/storyline/narrative) would be Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes and possibly Alpha Centauri.

If you reduce the requirements then more games become available (no unit customization and you get Age of Wonders 3 and Endless Legend), add space and you'd get Endless Space 2 (1 was retconned) There's also Stellaris but that's a divisive issue, plus it does feel shallow after a while.
