Endless Legend of Age of Wonders 3? AoW 3 looks like it has way better combat than EL.

Both are good games. If one looks fun for you and the other doesn't it would seem silly not to pic the one you like.

AoW3 has better combat but the empire building can be really lackluster

I think both look really cool just that AoW's combat looks a bit more engaging. (plus I like EL's UI)

AoW3 for combat, EL for empire building. I have both and enjoy the fuck out of them.

AOW is a mix between HOMM and MOM, EL is a bit more of a by the numbers 4x. Pick your poison as it were.

I seem to have misplaced my aow3 folder, but maybe this pic can show you a bit about the combat.

I only played aow3 for the commonwealth campaign in vanilla and for me the combat was pretty good, while EL combat seemed to be a crunched civ5 combat. Move around unit in a stack, then they spread out for a fight in the existing terrain if I recall an explanation correctly.

There's some cool stuff in aow3 combat like Flame Tanks that fire over a pretty huge area and can hit several targets, fights are between up to 7 stacks of units where each can hold 6 types of units. A bit low imo when the power level between the units is so big.
>>
>>181281542
Grab both, they're very different beasts.

EL is a more typical 4x. AoW3 is like Heroes of Might and Magic having a baby with the 4x Genre, to be really reductive.
>>
>>181281231
That's what annoys me with the weapons in Endless Legend, they aren't really obvious to differenciate.
Like, you say that Hyperium strikes faster but that Titanium has better stats overall. Well, unless you repeatedly switches from one another and compare every number down, you won't get any ingame description.

Compare that to Endless Space where you have less, but juicy numbers for your different weapons, each with their own strong points, it's a lot easier to figure out what's best for what situation.
And it's not like you can use common sense like "wow it's sharp so it sucks against armour" like in RPG.
>>
>>181281505
AoW3 combat turns quite fast to AI just spamming armies full of high tier units. End game is so fucking tedious.

>Well, unless you repeatedly switches from one another and compare every number down, you won't get any ingame description.
Not really. You just have to read the numbers and compare which type of gear adds more to what you want.

Admittedly, there are a lot of different numbers that matter and the icons aren't intuitive but you can definitely foresee which type of gear gives the biggest boost to damage and etc. Just don't demand it also comes in a variety that boosts another stat, like defence, to the max at the same time.
>>
>>181281842
Ehh, you don't really need to compare every peace of equipment, they follow more or less the same pattern across all tiers, so long as you stay within the same resource. IIRC it goes something like this:

Titanium-Health
Hyperium-Initiative
Adamantium-Defense
Palladium-Damage

Don't remember the last two.

Tho I agree that It's far from transparent.
>>
>>181282152
I'm still mad at how the sword icon isn't the damage, but the combat skill.

>>181282206
I needed that in the game.
>>
>>181281997
All DLCs for both games are expansion sized. Really good value for money, nothing like Paradox.

You might want to play the AoW3 campaigns in order, just remember that the older campaigns were balanced around the AI being brainded. A patch made it smarter so now Hard difficulty on some scenarios is Masochist/Impossible difficulty.
>>
>>181282260
>I'm still mad at how the sword icon isn't the damage, but the combat skill.
hm, in aow1 and aow2 sword was used for chance to hit, while a star was used for damage.

Actually, I don't think I ever played a game where "combat skill" was a thing. It was always called accuracy. Well, except Warhammer, but it's a tabletop game, it doesn't count.

Its the same in EL, but its SUPER unintuitive
Skill/chance to Hit is called Attack
Damage dealt on Hit is called Damage
And an attack that doesn't hit is just treated like a 0 damage hit, which leads to a lot of frustration for new players who don't get why their Infantry are doing 0 Damage.
Another similar issue, units that get hit by an opponent can't move on that same turn and, iirc, can only attack the unit that attacks them. So your units will seem to act arbitrary and attack only their attackers, leading to battle gridlock and again a lot of annoyance for new players who don't check Initiative values on units.

In a medium like video games and a genre like 4x I think it's especially hard to expect everyone to play the old stuff or the classics since it's so time consuming.

I think AoW1 is a fine game for its time, but I only played through the campaign like once. Started a second run of the campaign as the other faction, but didn't make it through it.

Played Age of Wonders 3 a bit because I was in the middle of a bone phase and I heard it had necromancers.

Combat was pretty neat, but didn't understood at all how cities worked, and found out my cities couldn't grow if I didn't had a farm near them, but I had no way to build any.

Even Warlock was easier than that, and Warlock is basically Civilizations with barbarians everywhere.
>>

>Combat was pretty neat, but didn't understood at all how cities worked, and found out my cities couldn't grow if I didn't had a farm near them, but I had no way to build any.
Farms increase city growth but are not required. Cities only starve if they are making settlers or the enemy starts fucking with them (spells/skills).

You can never build a farm, it's either on the map or not.
>>
>>181284602
I'm honestly not sure I like that system. It misses the feeling of progression that I associate with turn-based games.
>>
>>181284381
>but didn't understood at all how cities worked, and found out my cities couldn't grow if I didn't had a farm near them, but I had no way to build any.
Not sure if the farm limitation was there when I played vanilla aow3.

farms in aow1-3 appear in the hexes around the city.
Depending on the terrain, some terrain can't hold farms.
I think each hex just gave gold in aow2, didn't really notice them in aow3 when I played.

I know cities could only grow then as long as their borders could.

So if the city was surrounded by other cities and its borders weren't at the edge of your empire, it couldn't grow anymore.
Also shared borders decreased growth.
>>
>>181284680
There are improvements you can build to increase city growth and spells too. Other world map structures also give some population. Undead cities even get ""population"" from the corpses of nearby battles.

Hammers are industry currency you need to build buildings and units.
Mana is mana.
And Candles are research points.

There are buildings to help produce more of them and structures on the world map that give you extra if in the city radius.

That you can generate Pops with directly opposing Civics, even as fanatics, without having to meet some significant criteria is stupid.

Best way to play AoW3 is to put the game on slowest research speed. That way you actually get to use t1 unit and even gold-rank them.

Really, it's the only way to play now for me. Previously my hero reached the enemy capitol with outdate units.

>>
>>181295018
By putting slow research speed you can delay the start of the spam.

Deleting resources could theoretically help if the AI didn't get bonuses on higher difficulties.
>>
>>181292779
I'd love more strange traits for factions so they would play differently.

Start off as droids on a tomb world, researching sentient AI/synths causes a civil war to happen, splitting the empire.

Voidborn empire, either on large ark ships or as fleets of colony ships for food/factory ships for industry+energy/science ships for science. Fleets would be the equiavlent of "planets".

Gas giant creatures, colonize gas giants, can't colonize regular planets.

Destructive civilization that slowly worsens/corrupts the planets they're on, eventually have to abandon them for new planets.

was ideasguysing about voidborn one day and thought it would be neat if some pops could become space gypsies of sorts and just squat in large space stations.

Endless Legend is GOD tier
Civilization VI is so obviously lacking features and polish. It's much easier than EL to learn just from blind play, but the ceiling is so much lower.
Now, Civ V is probably a lot better if you're more interested in Empire building that military strategy play. But between VI and EL, EL takes the cake - just read up on the game before you dive in too blind.

The model "worked" because people liked CK2 and EU3 enough to buy EU4 and later Stellaris. The model will fall apart eventually because Paradox themselves are utterly incompetent at actually monetizing things in a non-retarded way and despite the dicksucking on their forums people will eventually tire of their bullshit.

Just look at Magica: Wizard Wars to see how shit Paradox is at monetizing shit. It's a game I would've paid money for but they released for free and then took down the servers when they realized a free game isn't really profitable.

They would have my money if they actually make the pricing like Civilization series. Hell I even consider buying Beyond Earth + Rising Tides even though it is subpar. >>
>>181326076
Endless depending on how well you already play, though the AI is somewhat better than what it was on release, especially fleet composition and gauging whether it can actually fight you before DoW. There's a few rather big stuff to iron out though
-Craver AI will 100% always be the AI that booms and becomes a notable threat. It will always have double the total score of any other AI, because the bonuses it gets are so massive even if it doesn't go on conquering sprees and hits depletion maluses. So much for being the faction that will "eat itself to death" if it doesn't expand constantly.
-You can still break the difficulty of any AI (including Cravers) and cheese the game with strategic resources since AI way, way overvalues them in trade deals even if it's the first turn of war, it has fleets sieging your systems and could absolutely destroy you. You can literally go by without building any military ships at all and when the AI declares war, just offer them a handful of strategic and to lesser extent luxury resources to instantly get truce. Considering this was also the case in EL as well (though I don't know if it was eventually patched out) I'm not sure whether the devs even know it's an issue that needs fixing, so a lot of more people need to complain about it.
>>
Can EL be played over LAN or do you need an internet connection?
>>
>>181327320
Thanks lad.
>>
>>181309474
Late, but you can't build great walls adjacent to two walls which are themselves adjacent. It's probably by design because it'd make it too easy to maximize the bonus by doing small wall triangles.
>>
>>181327320
What the fuck.

I require an After Action Report on HOW you did that.
>>
In Stellaris, if I put small weapons on the carrier type battle ship, will it try to fly close to the enemy and use them? Or will it just stay behind and keep them for the defence?
>>
>>181327632
Like I said, resources and stupid small bribes
>Faction that you're in cold war with asks for tribute ("gibe Dust nao" message). > Give Dust. (increase the amount in deal screen until the bar is just a little bit blue, otherwise they will decline your pathetic tribute)
>This also gives them the Happy opinion modifier and you can even usually sue peace the next turn without further bribes, which turns them Cordial for the rest of the game. Doesn't apply to Cravers obviously

>Faction makes diplomatic pressure demand. > Cave in because it's always something tiny and not something that will even remotely affect you

>Faction declares war on you (most likely with Cold War opponents, Cravers and peace treaty Horatio and Lumeris since they're prone to getting Sneaky opinion modifier)
>Give them a handful of strategic and luxury resources. How much they value each type depends on their situation, but regardless of that they will ALWAYS overvalue them even if they're literally sitting on top of your systems with their several doomstacks right now. Strategic resources seem to be valued more even if they can't use them yet

In short focus on Dust, Influence, and getting your hands on strategic and luxury resources. The AI does get big bonuses at the beginning but they're actually bad at consciously striving for Economic, Science or Wonder victories. You'll get a few warnings about Cravers nearing Economic victory due to their massive bonuses like I said, but they don't really focus on trade routes so you can easily overtake them eventually. This strategy is likely easiest to do with Lumeris which is how I did it (lots of Dust and their quest gives a massive +3 on every single luxury deposit) and Unfallen, both start with Pacifists in the senate and the sticky law is ridiculously good extra FIDSI since the AI is so easy to get on your good side and it doesn't care about giving you massive bonuses to all resources with its peace deal. Riftborn too for strategic law.

>>181328723
Pirates aren't even a nuisance, maybe in early game for your explorers and later for civilian transports, but in my games I genuinely have almost never gone out of my way to hunt them down since they don't really do anything other than fly around from system to system, they don't siege them down or anything. Only Vodyani probably are going to have non-fun time with them. I didn't even TRY to get the achievement on that Endless Lumeris run, it just hit me when I got that that yeah, I hadn't really bothered with clearing out pirates.

Distant Worlds: Universe is basically more mechanically fleshed out Stellaris, but has less roleplay elements.
If you just want more roleplaying aspects then Paradox's previous games are better than Stellaris for it. Try CK2 for example, again shittons of DLC, some of it cosmetic while others are actual expansions so pirating them might be a good idea.

if you haven't actually started the invasion proper, you need to kill off all enemy ships in-orbit before you can begin; if you are not yet ready to start the invasion, it is a good idea to still keep a ship or two parked there to stop the defense from recuperating as you said
however, once you start invading, it's of the highest imperative that you destroy any enemy fleets that enter the system, as they will add their manpower to the defending pool with every round

Early game, yeah pretty much. Build XII tho, it's nice to have since you insta colonise planets. Once you get about 3 arks 2 pops each you can go can start pretending that you are a normal civ, but generally you will still want to leech.

No I was having too much fun because I set the minor factions to biggest difficulty for some reason and I kept getting raided.
The minor factions even destroyed the elves by themselves.
What does it give?

That happens if you play on anything below Serious. AI just can't deal with super aggressive Minor Factions below that difficulty.

>>
Is it normal for the bat people to screech at you if you touch a pearl regardless of how far from their territory it is?
>>
>>181360710
It's a grand scale RTS.

Maps can get much bigger. Hundreds of planets.

>>181360769
>regardless of how far from their territory it is?
All of Auriga is their birthright. Pay attention to the lore.
>>
>>181360710
It's a hybrid. No reason to pigeonhole a game that clearly doen't fit.

>>181360769
Yes. AI designates some regions as "theirs" for purpose of pearls, with mothbats it can be pretty much the entire map due to how much they depend on pearls.
>>
>>181360827
Thats why I asked, I knew it was in the lore but it still seemed a bit dumb with how critical pearls are.
>>
>>181360917
>it still seemed a bit dumb
It's part of the personality update. AI factions now have personalities. Mothbats get angry if any infidel snatches a pearl, for an example.
>>
>>181361084
Its just a bit civ 6 "reeee stop playing the game" tier.
>>
>>181361351
It provides forewarning for them declaring war on your kleptomaniac ass.
>>
>>181361351
It's far less impactfull than civ. AI is much more likely to declare war on you because you are weak and they want your stuff than personality whims. It just makes diplomacy harder with them if you like pearl hunting for yourself.
>>
>>181361351
I am alright with that. You can't be friends with everyone.

In ES2, for example, I'd be alright if the tree freaked out any time you sucked off anyone's essence as a Vodyani or if the Sophons hated you for researching tech too fast and fucking up their bonuses.

Auriga was dying hard at the end of EL with it practically being in endless winter depending on how late you trigger the victory and the riftborn didn't immediately pop out of rift, they spent some time trying to fix it from within their universe. The whole strangeness with time around them may have played a part as well, I'd say there was time for Auriga to completely freeze over.

Did an early war and won by virtue of cede planet demand on their home world along with having a warlike leader (cheaper war cede planet demands) plus cheaper war demands tech.

Interesting thing is that I found anomalies in their systems, including their home system which they definitely surveyed themselves.

Seems to be you can find anomalies anywhere, so long as it's not inside some other empire's territory and that you haven't surveyed it already.

It would be very hard to continue, that's not a good BL start, tho being so close to water helps.

Grabbing Shipyard as first T2 tech and getting to the continent would be wise.
>>
>>181410243
Pretty fucked, there is essentially nowhere worthwhile to expand inland.
>>
Guys, in Endless Legend, what makes it go from one era to another?
>>
On a scale with 1 easiest and 10 being hope paradox updates to include this, how hard would it be to make some mods that do:

1 - Ship style differentiation as an empire choice -- maybe avains have bonuses to travel and cost reductions, reptilians have stronger hulls/armor, etc?

2 - expanded ship configuration options and balancing.

3 - Doing something with food surpluses and storage levels beyond a % multiplier to pop growth speed. Small surplus and stockpile mostly unchanged, maybe something like happiness boost, consumer goods cost reduction for largest stockpile and a big surplus. Not tested yet but maybe figure out a way to do stuff by switching from a full large stockpile to a small stockpile and temporarily bigger surplus [or temporary boost to something else based on how much you 'waste' as it gets converted to something else]
>>
>>181411563
>Guys, in Endless Legend, what makes it go from one era to another?
It happens every 9 techs you research.

Alright.

>>181410135
>Weapons, ship/stations types and slots rebalanced. No more specialized slots (PD, Torpedoes, etc) Instead there are multiple sizes besides S, M, & L. Certain weapons need slots big enough to fit and the bigger the gun the bigger the ship needs to be, so no corvettes with tachyon lances.

>Utility devices more useful the bigger they are Medium count as 8 small. Large count as 8 Medium.

>Actually good-looking ship types. No asteroids or parts of ships just pieced together like in NSC nor two guns placed together in the same spot.

The counters is that it has shit compatibility and absolutely no patches for other mods.

If you're uncomfortable with the balancing of the mod there also a submod called SR: Weapon Balance made by recommendations by users of the mod to re-balancing all of the shit in it.

I was also curious about the government system. Does each system get one vote no matter the size? Is it per planet? Could I gerrymander my pops? Or maybe just have one system be the only military producer and forfeit one vote.

The actual rule is that a an anomaly can be created if the planet is unscanned by the scanning ship's empire and it is not inside the territory of an other empire.

Meaning you can find anomalies inside an empire you conquer if you didn't scan their planets while it was in the other empire.

Anomalies chance is not stored on the planets/stars themselves but on the science ships. So any one planet can get multiple anomalies.
>>
>>181454704

don't make up your own rules for this thread
>>
>>181453462
Endless Space is more for normies.
>>
>>181455553
so that would imply you shouldnt get star charts, because every unscanned system is an opportunity for the ships themselves to 'create' anomalies.
>>
>>181458106
Yep. Also don't auto-explore if you plan on conquering because your ships will scan systems that are inside other empires, removing the possibility of finding anomalies there.

well some vain attempts at resurrection, there was a concurrent /civ4xg/ thread(it was super dead) while stellaris had its own thread for a short time
and before that there was a very brief resurrection because of hyped civ6 threads on /v/, keyword is brief

but yeah basically dead for months

You can try Planetbase, but it's the kind of game where you rage because you need 60 iron to make something important, and your miner decided to have a lunch break so you're stuck at 59.
>>
>>181468626
Got Planetbase back when it was new, enjoyed it for a time. Also got Anno 2070 but grew tired of the whole Ubisoft Login/always online thing so I won't get Anno 2250.

Thinking of getting Offworld Trading company but apparently the AI is terrible and DLC isn't worth it, so it'd be only for one play through.

It's unfortunate, I would love a near future space strategy game. One that isn't Aurora (too autistic) or Children of a Dead Earth (too linear).
>>
>>181469261
Offworld Trading Company (OTC) is pretty fun, but you either enjoy it alone with your own rules or with friends.

The AI is not a challenge. It's a bit like War for the overworld?

overall a much better game, worse combat system due to the fact that it doesn't 100% revolve all around fighting, and as such has an exemplary focus on empire building

its aesthetics, atmosphere, storyline, art, and general feel are infinitely better

the differences between factions are radically more defined than the difference between AoW3 classes

Go expansion first and get frontier outposts with half maintenance.
Cover system you want to colonize in the future.
Try to build frontier outposts consecutively.

So you build one that costs 30-50 influence, and then another that costs 30-50, rather than first the second one that costs 100.

Let me help out there:
EL: Stack initially at 5, but upgradeable with tech.
Combat is Adjacent Stacks and tactical screen but using the local environment and indirect commands. If a unit is commanded to attack an enemy but the enemy moves out of their range they will attempt to reach them and maybe attack another adjacent ally for example.
Research is tiered Tech Web - say T1 has 15 techs but once you research 8 you unlock T2, so you have to either make conscious decisions to leave tech behind or revisit it and delay unlocking further tiers.
Terraform itself is nonexistent. You sprawl your cities into the hex tiles however and some factions have skills that can limit movement (such as Ardent Mages able to summon pillars that give tiles boosts but blocks path and city building where they are).
>>
>>181521757
>Stack initially at 5
Its 4+Hero, actually.
>once you research 8
9
>delay unlocking further tiers.
Tiers unlock based on absolute number of techs, not their tier.
>>
>>181522031
Oops. I will concede being wrong on 1 and 2, but I could swear getting techs in t1 would not unlock t3.
>>
>>181516995
You are ether super fucked or super fine, depending on your fleet and weapon tech.
>>
Endless Space 2:

How do I fight late game battles? DO I just build like 10+ fleets at the fleet cap without using any non-tier-1 strategic resources? I have blue and yellow in spades, but orange/red/green//purple are just almost nonexistent.

I also have tons of production, and like 4 or 5 systems with literally nothing to build but ships, but I have no strategics to build with.

>>
>>181524326
Most of warring in ES2 is on a macro level. If you can, scout out what weapons/defenses the enemy is using and build appropriate defenses/tactics/weapons. Then you build fleets to the caps and spread them to attack as many of their systems as you can together. Depending on how strong they are you'll need to keep your fleets close together so if one is destroyed there is another able to fight them.
INCREASE YOUR CONTROL POINTS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE - that is usually what allows you to win individual battles and overall win the war.

It really is a very simplistic and American view of slavery. All European slave-holding societies were NOT racist. But try telling that to the American audience.

>>
>>181532503

Xenophobes have an issue with ALL other species.
My empire has three races with full-citizenship and I like that. However all the rest can literally burn and I'd purge them once I acquired terraforming tech.
>>
>>181532891
It's like what happened to japan and germany. They are just trying to get into a better position at the end of it, and they are hoping you don't have the paitence to just purge them.

Speaking of which, where is the REMOVE CRAVERS button? The "only original race can breed" religion law is super expensive, and shipping them to a new colony that you abandon every other turn manually is frustrating as hell.
>>
>>181533250
>and shipping them to a new colony that you abandon every other turn manually is frustrating as hell.
Ship them to a full colony. The ships will disappear by themselves after some time.
>>

I'm interested too.
>>
>>181533390
Yea...but then something happens and the colony has two slots empty and then suddenly I have cravers on my super important colony. It's easier to just build one colony ship and send it to a 2xgas giant system.

The craver race is really OP in any kind of pvp game. They are just so powerful early game, and once they start rolling there is no stopping them.

I wish C:S maps had tags or something.
I'm looking for a map with just one or two small rivers, flanked by small hills, with disasters, mass transit, European theme and snow.
Right now the only way to look for a map like that is to guess at the screenshot in the workshop, then download and load the map to see how it matches up.
The default maps in the game for some reason have just way too many rivers.
