How to make aiming with analog stick in GM:S? I use
>var r_stick_dir = point_direction(0,0, gamepad_axis_value(0, gp_axisrh),gamepad_axis_value(0, gp_axisrv));
for getting the direction, but with this, the stick prefers 8 directional aiming instead of full 360.

Have you guys heard of Crocotile? I just discovered it and I think this is my new obsession. It's a free program that lets you use 2D tilesets to model 3D terrain and characters. Can't export or save obj files if you don't buy a license, but they're only ten bucks... I think this is my new favorite tool. Thoughts?

Searching fiverr for artists is depressing.

Either because they charge closer to 500 dollars than 5, or because the person is.. how can I say this.. a loser. Not that I'm not, don't get me wrong. It's just sad seeing these people with pictures of themselves and they're worn down, and their work is really, really bad, and it's clear this is just a last ditch effort at trying to find a way to make money..

I'm saying that anybody can compose in a major key in 4/4 or triple time, even your annoying neighbor's even more annoying nephew, to really stand out you have to be able to step outside that comfort box. Good game music these days shifts time and key signatures every few bars, can loop midway onto itself at a different key, and segue seamlessly into other parts of the soundtrack

What's your game's story, anon?

You do have a story, right? You sure aren't making a silly time waster for kids, but are using the power of this medium to create emotions and meaning, right?
>>
>>181079058
>anybody can compose in a major key in 4/4 or triple time
Sure it's easier than ever to do so nowadays, but it's still hard to make a good song.

Anyway, I'm a fervent believer that good game music is music that suits the game's own needs. Yes, you'll need to do different things to stand out and all that, but that's something that should come from the game itself. You shouldn't just immediately go meterless, 12-tone scale in a simple kid's game, for example, unless that's somehow meant to be the draw.

Simpler music can do wonders you know. Just look at all the people who fell in love with the Mario Odyssey trailer music. Otherwise, if your game is meant to be more abstract, then by all means, have meter changes every few bars. It all just depends on the effect the game needs at whatever given moment.

I'm confident that in my own composition abilities, as well as my ideals for music in games. That said, I'm never going to stop trying to learn new musical ideas, which is what you seem to be suggesting. It's just that I'm also very much interested in game development, even though I still consider music to be my main ability.

Yeah, that has some of that vibe. I haven't played it a lot, but I don't remember you're the bad guy there. I could use some of it for inspiration.

Hm, I'm not sure if that's every RPG, at least not how I picture it. Your missions actively ruin the place by the actions you are forced to do by your lord.

It wouldn't be the main mechanic, but it could work well in my game where you travel to different towns where you need to assassinate your targets, steal some intel, do kidnappings, destroy the resources etc., so every time you return to the town you've already visited before, you'll see the changes you've made and it should make you feel like shit. The whole visuals of town should slowly change, as well as the music. I'd add the possibility that you can disobey your lord, but you must face the consenquences etc.

Anyway, I'll rather stop ideafagging and actually try to work on it, since it's kinda hard to explain.

But in all seriousness arrays and loops are the majority of programming. OOP will be tough but it's a satisfying beast to conquer. Also, might I suggest learning C/C# or Java instead? C++ is powerful but as a beginning programmer it's easy to get caught up in pointers and other stuff. But what do I know, I'm a shitty programmer.

Implemented gradual turning based on character's current direction and stick tilt.
Finally implemented (some form of) friction. Movement's a lot tighter and satisfying now.

Uh, hello everyone. I was wondering how I would determine who owns the trademark or copyright to a little N64 game called Aerogauge. It was developed by Locomotive games and Published by ASCII entertainment. Locomotive games was sold to THQ, but THQ went out of business.

Who owns it now? How would I find out who owns it? If nobody owns it, could I just make a game called Aerogauge 2 if I wanted? I asked /biz/ but they sent me here.
>>

I honestly do not understand this.
You can make an exact clone literally any game you want, all you have to do is change the art and characters and names so nothing infringes on copyrights.
Why the fuck are some people so obsessed with IPs that they want to make a game specifically with that IP? Like you don't even need to make the theme different, it can be the same theme.
And honestly the cars aren't even super unique, you can probably make highly similar looking cars without infringing on anything.

Also you know everyone will just call it an FZero clone even if you did call it "Aerogauge 2"

Should I use accessors (getters/setters) as opposed to making variables public?

It's something I've seen a lot of people do including my profs, but I've heard arguments against it that talk about how it provides no functional advantages and muddies your code.
>>
>>181097598
Depends. Getters/setters without any logic can run assertions and stuff (design by contract). And it's easy to turn a getter/setter without logic into a getter/setter with logic, not so much if you start with a field. If you are using C# or something else with properties or an equivalent, you should always use them.
>>
>>181097598
Getter/Setter are used when following the OO paradigm. Whether one should do that is an argument as old as OO.
>>
>>181097136
who are you are what was your game
>>
>>181097598
Always use getters and setters. They're important enough for Microsoft to invent properties when they made C#, which are getters and setters baked into a variable when you instantiate it.
>>
>>181097598
>it provides no functional advantages and muddies your code.

It provides encapsulation. Its a safeguard where if you decide to change the underlying structure of your code, you can just change the body of the getters and setters without having to modify anything else.

Say you have

struct MyDude {
int speed_m_s; // speed in m/s
}

And everything in your code refers to the speed of MyDude by speed_ms:

void Function(whatever) {
int x = mydude.speed_m_s;
}

But in the future you find a really neat physics or animation library and the units they provide are like, jiffies/ms or some shit

So you retool the MyDude class to use jiffies_ms, but now everything that refers to MyDude's speed in m_s must be changed

If you use a getter and setter, you wouldn't have to change anything excecpt for the getter and setter:

struct MyDude {
int get_speed_m_s() {
convert_jiffies_to_m_s(speed_in_jiffies);
}
int speed_in_jiffies;
}

Sorry if this is a tad incoherent im smashed

>>
>>181098032
That's not a problem I would consider being best solved with getters and setters. Just pick a standard unit system and convert as "close" to the library as possible, never let code abstracted from the library use anything but those units.

>>
>>181098205
The point is you don't always have the benefit of hindsight. My example may be flawed but can always run across a situation where you didn't plan for something and must change its underlying implementation.

A simple scalar value may become an expression of multiple scalar values computed on demand, or something else entirely. You always want the things that access the classes you create to never care about the implementation.

In most mature/professional code bases you will find an API that tries to maintain stability and then the underlying implementation separated from it. This makes sure you can go back and make changes to the implementation without having to change everything that uses it. That's what encapsulation is all about and its important to consider it at least. If your game is simplistic enough and you are a relatively new coder, don't worry too much. If you are making something you actually want to maintain, it should be something you think about.

the same reasons people make fanfiction instead of going the Fifty Shades of Gray route, mainly that they're attached to whatever thing it is and they want of specifically that thing
people are often like this, it's just that most people aren't very creative or have low confidence or motivation to use their creativity

Bunch of progress done today, though there are still some kinks to work out:

- First off, I made the rest of the pickups so now the player can replenish their health/ammo/etc.

- Added an enemy group with values for health, along with bullet damage so they can be killed. I also made a fancy popup that shows how much damage you dealt, which combines numbers for multiple sources of damage dealt at once (shotguns etc).

- Started implementing AI/pathfinding for the enemies. Right now they don't collide with each other, which I plan to fix, but it's turning out to be a hell of a headache so that'll probably take a while.

Reaper, but the DAW doesn't matter. Reaper happens to be my favourite for sound effects because I find it's interface as immediate and as unadorned as possible, it has really good inbuilt timestretching faculties, every item has a nice inbuilt automatic crossfade or fade in/out + it has tabbed projects at the top so if you're working on a bunch at once it's really no trouble to just quickly make tweaks. The most important bit of software here is probably getting your hands on Alchemy (which is not discontinued for windows, so piracy is the only option there, if you're a logic fella it's inbuilt into that now).

>>181106717
The idea was the speaking voice would be a comfortable volume level, then the sound effects would be deafening, proper movie style. I'll make them more balanced next time.

Alright idea guys give me elevator pitch for a game. Here are some guidelines:

-K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid)
-3d graphics (gameplay can be 2d I guess)
-Has spaceships (not too important)
-Single player
-Has replayability

I was thinking something like kid Icarus Uprising where you're a mecha thing, several levels, fun story. Levels are in 2 parts. A 3d space shooty part and then a 3d area fighting thing with bosses.

We have to. It's a degree in game dev.

Don't worry we're a competent team of 4 master students.

We have 1 whole semester to make a functioning 3d engine and we're working during the summer so should be completely doable.

The thing is I want my team to have a game idea and direction to work towards. Last semester we had a 1 semester game and we just followed a concept and I'm not too happy with the end result, I feel it could've been better. So this time since we have a whole year I want us to have a goal we're aiming for.

Today I learned it's kind of difficult to balance the pace of a story, exposition, and interest.

Too much detail and it goes on for too long (my original intro was twice the length..) and gets boring. Especially early on when you don't know if you care about this game world yet and just want to play.

Too little detail and it starts to get more and more generic as you cut down, and less interesting as details are removed.

Hard to balance. I guess I need to give less up front and have more details about the world implied through events that happen over time, as opposed to giving it all in an intro.

Not really happy with this current implementation either. It cuts a lot of details I want and doesn't feel amazing. But I'm starting to waste a lot of time on something not important to gameplay. Still, I want to get the intro right.

I was thinking of having shots in the background relevant to what the text is describing. Instead of just black. But that requires getting all the text right so I don't waste time making scenes for text I want to cut or alter.

>>
>>181113056
Show, don't tell.
One of my favourite intros in games is in Metroid Prime 1. It has one sentence, then establishes the scene, followed by presenting the player in a hero shot. The whole thing takes two minutes and creates tons of atmosphere.
>>
>>181113056
I thought this looked badass honestly, but I can't help but feel like the text could only benefit from having a non solid black background. Even if it was dimly pulsing stars or just staying on that screen and letting the ship leave it entirely and sitting on that view until the text was finished.

you fell for the oop meme.

in strict oop terms if you have a data structure inside a class then all the program behavior should be structured such than no one from outside the class ever touches that internal data structure (encapsulation). in practice it never works out that cleanly so people write accessor methods that expose the guts of the class to outside interaction. this turns oop into a series of superstitious gestures where you consider a breach of encapsulation to be bad but you "make it okay" by routing the breach through a method you wrote or perhaps some more elaborate messaging system etc. or you can just stop pretending you care about oop and make the internal data structure public.

Fuck off with that 'gender is a construct' bullshit.

You got a dick that shoots semen, you are a man. You got a vagina and a womb, you are a woman.

Anything that has neither does not have a gender. Eunuchs are not a gender, trannies are not a gender, robots don't have gender and neither do single celled organisms.

They are agender.

whoa there
contain your autism, buddy

we weren't talking about background of collaborators here
I presented a valid point, but instead of responding to it, you bring up something to muddle the original argument.

you: a collaborator must be receive a salary
me: work-for-hire receives a salary, collaborators do smth for free for a mutually beneficial end goal
you: b-but that anon only offers an idea, the collaborator must offer the labor

me: (at this point I misinterpreted your post, thinking that you claimed that "working on an existing idea is in essence working FOR someone else")

let me try that again

me: you are twisting facts. at in no point did he claim that he is not gonna do any work. in fact, he told many times that he will do a large majority of the work and that he needed a collaborator to ease the load, by giving the collaborator the easiest work - programming a VN

at this point it is clear that you are just twisting facts and grabbing for straws

so the original question STILL stands

How do YOU think a collaboration should be made? Explain it. Where do you find the people? What do you promise them? How are the intellectual ownerships? How should the project be structured? When should one start looking for collaborators? etc

in ancient greece and rome, dudes wore dresses. in modern america, dudes don't wear dresses.

unless you can prove that ancient greeks had a dress-wearing gene that has been bred out of the modern male it seems like we're looking at a cultural standard of what a man wears that can change over time. this expectation of behavior based on sex was named "gender", after the grammatical concept, 60 years ago. it's incredibly obvious that you having a dick is biological but you covering it with pants and not a dress is cultural and the word gender is just a shorthand for that distinction.

it's an incredibly simple, uncontroversial concept and watching today's kids flip out over a simple word is endlessly entertaining. what are you going to crusade against when you get bored of being mad about "gender"? are you going to deny the existence of fridays? the color red? vowels?

Buses are an analogy for people's achievements. Individuals achieve to push society forward, but all the achievements from previous generations meld into into a surface of combined achievements of which individual achievements can no longer be separated.

In 100 years, even great minds will be forgotten.

In 1000 years, the greatest minds will be forgotten.

In 10000 years, everything that came before becomes indistinct legend.

it is also a synonym for sex, that people use because it sounds more technical and doesn't cause bystanders to turn around wondering if you're being lewd in public when they hear you say "sex"

Anyone have any suggestions on where to get started for doing attrition on a 2D plane, kinda like Rise of Nations?

As in, certain objects emit attrition, and from there this forms a.. I'm not sure what to call it, but a fluid that emits a color, and reaches out based on the attrition scale, and if it hits enemy attrition, it chooses a spot between them based on distance and attrition scale and all that

I use UE4 so I guess the best way is to form splines around my classes and then fill it in but I'm not sure the best way to go about doing all the math

a collaboration is, literally, the sharing of work. if you can't demonstrate the ability to share the workload then you cannot pursue a collaboration, but you can still pay for labor. if you can neither demonstrate skill or offer money then you are worthless. if you are worthless but think you can trick people into giving you free labor by calling it a collaboration then you are laughable. that's why "his" posts in the previous threads were laughable: he thought he could get programmers to implement his story rpg for free while actively refusing to demonstrate any skill in writing, art, design, or literally any field relevant to the project. his contribution was going to be writing the story, but he refused to post a single example of his writing.

even if i generously accept that you're not him you're still defending the most cancerous form of ideaguying possible.

So since literally all roguelite FPS have failed what do you think is needed to make a good one?

This.

Humans are optimized to create tools that fulfill specific purposes. Therefore when we look at pre-existing things we tend to try and find purposes for them, as if someone had created them. This extends to ourselves.

Feelings of existential dread, and our search for meaning, happen because we're TOO optimized to see things in a tool-making framework. It's basically the human equivalent of a cat trying to catch laser pointers.

>>
If your game were a type of bread, what type would it be?
>>
>>181128637
yes. for example, law is based on nothing but a social agreement to obey and enforce law. then there's unwritten social rules and rituals which despite existing purely in people's imaginations have a measurable material effect on your existence. you don't live in the real world, you live in the real world as mediated by a sociosymbolic network. for example, if i convince enough people that you are a pedophile, it will ruin your life. a shared belief in you having touched a kid will have an enormous impact on the reality of your day-to-day existence and whether you really touched a kid or not will be irrelevant.

see? social reality. it's really very simple.

You're probably right on that for most of them. It's definitely the current popular thing that a lot of indies are doing.
Though I do think that if used properly roguelite elements can improve a game but the core gameplay needs to be top notch.

Ziggurat's okay but it suffers from RNG going full retard sometimes, I've had rooms that cut my fire rate in half and force me to use my alchemy tier weapons, the altfire took a full 8 seconds to cool down after firing it once, completely locking my ability to shoot for the whole time.

I think RNG needs to be used very carefully in more action oriented roguelike style games, otherwise you're gonna wind up dicking the player over in a really unsatisfying way. The said, Ziggurat has a nice art style and I like the default wand weapon

this describes 90% of programming of any kind that goes on here.

i feel i have a decent grasp of the shader pipeline. the problem is that you can't get shaders from looking at shader code, you need to read a book about what the rest of the gpu does. people look at shader code and see a familiar c-style if statement but secretly it's something completely different under the hood.

Yeah white outline is from the rim lighting. I like the way it makes the character kind of pop but a lot of people don't like it. I think I can manage to change the colors of the outline depending on the color of the environment that he's in at the time though so it won't look so out of place.

It's a traditional turn based roguelike. The gameplay is 2D on a grid, but the graphics are 3D. You pilot a mecha, and the mecha is what gets upgrades throughout the levels. You can also exit your mecha and move on foot, however your pilot doesn't get bonuses, and only has a basic pistol that's can't do much beyond first/second level enemies. The pilot can do some things, like hack panels to open doors or turn off defenses. Also when your mecha dies the pilot is ejected, if you can find another mecha lying around you could start piloting that one. If the pilot does though, it's game over.

Does this sound fun? I might make a prototype to see if it feels fun.

It's a serious question. The switch is literally the only thing I'm interested in when it comes to vidya, therefore I want to make the types of games I like to play for it.

I'm not an engine dev nor am I interested in wasting my time going down that route, so I want to find out which engine to use to make this happen.
Game maker would be the best bet for the type of game I want to make but it currently doesn't support the switch. Unity is a bit of overkill for what I want to make but I'll cope if it's the best option.

>>
>>181130042
well my situation's the opposite of yours because i've written a bunch of shaders but never did any serious functional programming but just as a vague guess: shader coding is all about mass data processing where things like branching or loops have hidden performance costs because whole chunks of data are being processed in parallel and you can't really "branch" them without executing both branches and discarding some of the results. so i suspect letting people write them in a functional paradigm would result in beautiful expressions full of ifs and recursion that would look elegant as shit but choke the fuck out of the gpu because divergent execution is a problem and whole chunks of pixels are getting the same amount of processing done to them as the "worst" pixel in the chunk. also function calls are not very well supported at all, limited stack depth and so on. i don't think recursion was even allowed until a few years ago.

the average euro comic has females that look cute but still human unlike the weird female-ish animals that weebs draw. unless you want me to draw a better one myself in which case lol, you can have taste without being an artist.

Who said "only"? And you do blush during those things. You don't blush standing around looking at something that vaguely interests you.

The only solace possible when talking to "people" like you is knowing you won't have children for obvious reasons. Thank fuck.

Get a life, retard.
I knew more than one women who never blushed during sex and orgasm. And on the contrary I've seen a dozen girls with permanent blush on cheeks(and a lot more with tan-induced blush).
(I'm not a weeb above, just triggered by your argument that is really retarded.)

So you just post this picture whenever you're upset that anons are arguing or ??? It's kind of obnoxious. You must be a faggot who needs attention on themself 100% of the time and can't stand when people talk about something not your business around you.
>>
>>181134746
the difference between a normal blush and an orgasm blush is the heart shaped pupils

how do I autotile mountains
>>
>>181130772
they're just cry babies, tile editor is fine, tilemap is more tuned for fast and efficient tiled maps, creating the tileset for a big number of tiles can be tedious however, my only complain is that the tilemap is barebone and doesn't support tile animation internally, but you only need to code a function to have that.
