Functions can't use delays, and by their nature of being 'in a box' can't as easily interact with other bits around your graph like getting the outputs of other previously executed functions, access to timelines, their use with timers, there are also some networking implications which I'd guess aren't relevant.

A function with no output is just a bad event which can have local variables (and I'd guess that adding some local variables takes it back to being a function)

Easily handled with futures.
>>
>>180974289
So wouldn't it be bad practice to insert a delay or make it interact with the rest of the graph when it's being called like a function?

Level persistence for items is basically done.

Had not really planned it but the system could even handle items dropped by the player.
Which really only makes sense when you have some kind of inventory/weight management in place, which I personally believe is pretty much always an annoying waste of time, so I don't fuckin know.

What even speaks for inventory management?
It's not even realistic or anything.

What's the hard part, the writing or the production? What software are you using?

Also, now that I think about it, if a game looks lo-fi then it can probably get away with lo-fi music. I liked the music in LISA and that was just like fucking default loops he dropped in garage band on mac or whatever he used. Sounds like shit production wise but was whacky enough to be memorable.
But if I was playing a nice looking 3D game I'd expect nice sounding music. You know what I mean?

Hi
I know only the very very basics of programming

but I want to make a "game." A turn based RPG, with just about the same mechanics as Pokemon. I really enjoy competitive Pokemon but there is a lot of shit in it that I think could be fixed to make it overall more fun. I want to make my own version of that, think like the Project M but for Pokemon.

I can't imagine it would be too difficult. Its just a simple turn-based game with 5 stats. I think if I actually put in the effort I could learn how to do it. I'm just not sure where to start. What would be the best way to go about making this?

Alternatively, if there is a way to do it with gamemaker or RPGmaker without having to spend too much time on actually programming... that would be cool.
>>
>>180974515
Functions can call events anyway so this doesn't introduce any new 'risks'

People say don't use IMGUI because it's expensive to compute layouts every frame. You are a fucking retard if your GUI layout is expensive to compute. Not talking GPU state changes and draw calls and whatnot here, you should cache and reuse as much as possible. Ideally define the types of your GUI API to forbid or at least discourage doing slow things with your GUI.

just pick whatever engine in the OP and start learning
you will have to spend a lot of time on programming and it will be harder than you think though, don't expect it to be easy or else you will drop it at the slightest issue, making games is not the same as playing games where things always work as intended

I'm using Unreal's Blueprint system. What's a good, reliable way to get help as I make this fucking thing?
>>
>>180977140
depends on the game.

im going to force my game's inventory to be small so that the player doesnt travel too far without storing.

i just find it stupid that a player can hold a billion items while walking around in a semi-realistic setting.

I also makes getting inventory slot upgrades so much more satisfying.

tl;dr, unlimited inventory is fucking stupid
>>
>>180978369
Yeah i might have to once I finish all my art. Shouldn't be too hard seeing as though I can already easily arrange fingerstyle versions of songs by ear on guitar.
>>
>>180976250
Oh hey, I'm making a similar design, my character is based around using a magic hammer and a magic spear. Good shit. Are you making the animations yourself or using blueprints?
>>
>>180978548
How about for a game with progression similar to Souls or the earlier resident evils?
>>
>>180978919
Souls games have unlimited inventory because resource scarcity is less important when opening the inventory doesn't pause the game and using an item makes you vulnerable for 5 seconds.
On top of that, healing items are usually rare so there's no need to limit your ability to carry them.

I haven't played Resident Evil but the early games were survival horror and survival horror absolutely NEEDS resource scarcity. Whether you choose to enforce that through a limited inventory or by making the most useful items rare is up to you.

A limited inventory is best used when you want to force the player to make decisions about which items to take with them.

What's better for storing items in an inventory, a dictionary or list?

lists are easier to iterate over but suffer from increased lookup times as the list grows

dictionaries have consistent lookup times regardless of the dict's size but are more troublesome to iterate over
>>
>>180980353
I'm using an array because I need to associate each item with a particular slot.
A list would probably be better if I wasn't doing that.
I don't know why you'd use a dictionary.
>>
>>180975518
Sounds great have you tried writing character themes? I always loved ffX's Seymour theme.
>>
>>180980659
In a dict, the key could be the item, and then the value would be how many the player currently has.
>>
>>180980353
Are you trying to make a dictionary software or a video game? Will your inventory have a few million entries?
>>
>>180980353
I am very pro arrays (lists is kind of an overloaded word)
I would say in most cases the lookup time is meaningless and the fact that lists don't "privilege" a certain feature of your data makes them really good when you need to change the structure/requirements of your data

A game like Monolith had less than 3k units sold.
Bokube? Probably less than 500.

So if it's sold at $10 + 500 units = 5k - Steam 30% = 3,500
>>
>>180983850
Monolith needs some TotalBiscuit coverage or something, it's on "hidden gem" status right now.
>>
I hope Monolith has been hitting up streamers to stream his game. It seems fun to watch, and it's certainly fun to play, so it's worth a shot

Just one. No videos or anything like that (it wasn't exactly popular but it wasn't a great game either).
It's just really difficult to find any meaningful discussion these days on the game's page because 99% of it are Youtube videos with dumb "LOL REACTION FACE CAM" thumbnails with like 50 views. like basically "SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON AND LICK MY SMELLY ASSHOLE" pewdiepie wannabes. it's just really frustrating.
especially when most of them have no idea what the fuck they're doing and spend like 7 minutes sitting there going "i dont know what to do BUY MY MERCH AND SUBSCRIBE"
i dunno. i assure you im not really as mad as my posts make it out to be. but it genuinely is annoying.

one of the reasons i dont talk about our sales (besides actual genuine optimism) is because it causes shit like this. i don't think we failed, if anything we've gotten a lot of learning experience, a modest amount of recognition and enough sales revenue to keep up future gamedev. none of that would have happened if we gave up.

TB covering it would probably be unlikely. He doesn't do indie games as much these days like he used to.

Honestly, I think he just needs to send out some press codes to various streamers. due to the drop in drop out style of watching streams and the rogue-lite nature of Monolith, it would be a perfect fit. Like maybe a streamer could show a game or two in between games they focus on.

Monolith is so cool but there's gotta be some marketing.

GS still gets a lot of attention because I stupidly shilled it on Factorio forums for basically no reason and it's still getting traffic and downloads from there, but I don't think of it too highly. Weird choice of music, weird game mechanics, artfag friend didn't care for the game too much, ultimately the game didn't do too well in the jam either.

I felt much better about Super Crash Box and Hero of Alexandria which I did 100% of the work on, they also placed much better in the jams. Getting into the top 50 Fun in ldjam, feelsgud.

No. I enjoy chiptunes and recognize them as being worthwhile and "real" music as far as listening to music goes, but for most games chiptunes simply aren't appropriate and never could be, regardless of how skilled the composer is.

Imagine Bloodborne with chiptines. That shit would be hilariously awful.

>>180997031
>>180996787

This was actually a conversation between members of the team. In terms of overall musical flow, we decided that since stage 1's track was a pulsing, hard-hitting guitar track, stage 2 should dial things back with a slower tempo and more melancholic tone.

I am personally a fan of contrast in game soundtracks (obvious example is Gwyn's theme in Dark Souls), and a lot of inspiration for me comes from ZUNTATA soundtracks in Darius games, which often pair hard-hitting action with abstract music that shouldn't fit but does. Or Thunder Force IV, which has often jazz fusion during the stages and heavy metal for the bosses. In this case, when I thought of a big city, I thought of smooth saxophones, with feeling of sadness or loss, which on a fundamental level pairs (in my mind) with the general level progression of everything turning to shit.

I recognize that not everyone is going to think like that, but I appreciate hearing the opinions so I can try to make things work as well as possible. It also may be something that makes more sense in the moment than assessing parts separately.

>>180994613
I did use a hard limiter to push up the total volume of the track and make its overall level consistent, though I am not hearing the same type of cut you're describing. It might be the particular filter effects I used on the drums and bass. I do appreciate the feedback and will be more careful about mixing/mastering on other tracks/sfx, since EQ is the hardest part of my writing process.

I believe he was asking what you meant by the statement "gamemaker's native grid datastructure can't hold objects"

I believe he was asking what you meant by that statement because GM's ds_grids can hold about anything you can imagine, and even if they couldn't you could be using an array before you had to use collision code.

Look, how important is music in your game?

If it's just ambiance or background noise, why do you need custom tracks? There are plenty of licences for good music out there in your genre - I guarantee it.

Only if the music is linked to your game in some way do you need custom music (IE. transistor)

Literally nobody cares that they heard the music in your game somewhere else. If you are spending more than $200 TOTAL on music for an indie project, then stop and rethink your budget.

The average indie project doesn't have $10k to $100k to spend on triple A music or orchestral scores from some philharmonic orchestra.

Hell, even Star Wars stole all its scores from Gustav Holst.

Okay, I checked, and it does seem like the grids can actualy hold strings as well as numbers. I suppose it's possible that they could hold object ID's as well, but even then I would have to have one grid to hold the map tile information(IE which tiles are walls and which are floors) and another grid for storing objects on top of the map, but that wouldn't allow me to have multiple objects on one tile unless grids can contain lists as well, which a doubt, and even if they could it seems like a stupid idea anyway.

There's literally not one reason for me to be storing arrays inside the grid.

Is it wrong that I only like to/can make very small game?
It's not that I get bored of a project and stop working on it (though that happens too some times), I just come up with very small ideas, with only a handful of features, and after I have made those, I see no point in continuing. People say "just add more stuff to make the game bigger", but this is the problem, I don't feel like adding more things, I can't see a reason to do that.
At the same time, I can't help but feel that all I do is pointless because nothing will come out of making a lot of tiny games.

Looks great, only thing that worries me is the lack of recoil on weapons or recoil on the body of the mech.

Weapons look like peashooters, there is no force feedback. Makes everything look very unsatisfying.

Maybe if you slow down the fire rate and add a little push-back on each fire. Bigger bullet trails wouldn't hurt either.

My twin-stick shooter starts you off in one ship, then you enter the fighter phase where you can choose between three ships, and then after a while you can get access to frigates and above.

What I'm having trouble deciding is whether the story should be about you as a fighter on a carrier until you get your own capital ship, or have you be on a space station and you take missions from there until you get your capital ship to leave

Gameplay wise it makes little difference.. mainly story and minor changes to some level design

Still, I can't decide what to go with.

Would you rather defend a space station and use it's jump gate to go do missions, or would you rather be attached to a carrier and do missions from it?

The only reason old games had townspeople walk around aimlessly like they were braindamaged, and stores that served only your purpose as a player and were otherwise pointless, is because they didn't know how to do it any better and/or technology constraints.

But now people just gobble it up like it's normal, and even defend it somehow.

a video game world operates on a symbolic and not a literal level, a community can therefore be portrayed in a shorthand manner with a shopkeeper being an icon that stands in for the idea of a local economy without having to present the operation of an actual economy in detail. this is how all fiction works, so for example a character in a movie can be portrayed as a shady figure simply by the use of cinematic shorthand (lighting, camera angle, musical cue) and everybody understands it immediately without the need for a two-hour documentary about the shady figure's actual criminal career. a video game conveys ideas through its own language analogous to but different from the language of cinema, and what you're engaging in when you refuse to read that language is simply willful illiteracy and nothing to be proud of.

game space is not real space. this is obvious. none of the problems with skyrim would be fixed by magically changing the spatial proportions to match what a "real" fantasy kingdom would "realistically" be. realistically the population density should be minuscule and it should take real-time days to travel between cities on horseback. being a video game is not a "shortcoming" of a video game an fixing this "shortcoming" is a delusional pursuit.

The problem with realistic cities/towns in games is that they aren't very exciting to travel through especially when most of the city is usually locked off which kills most of the exploration aspect of it. Having to walk 5 minutes through a city to reach the store you want is a pointless waste of players' time.

Sure a lot of it still boils down to tech and budget constraints and stupid design choices. We also get funny shit like Skyrim's supposedly largest town has like 10 buildings or something.
>>
>>181018465
But those 10 buildings are representative!!!!
They are the abstract REPRESENTATION of a city! Why can't players understand this!

>>
>>181018543
but players do understand this, implicitly and without effort. you're the one having trouble.
>>
>>181018369
well I would say the problem isn't really that new vegas's map is empty, it's that it's not fun for some people. if the map was fun, they wouldn't complain about it being empty. so the problem you need to solve is making several literal IRL hours of travel enjoyable somehow. some ideas:

>"realistic" game takes place in a fairly small region, let's say south texas in year 1825
>there are 10 towns. I'm not going to look up all this shit to see what's accurate for the time and place but let's say you have something like "el paso metro area equivalent" so there would be a bunch of shitty towns in the double digit miles away from each other, with the hub in the middle
>a horse can trot 8 mph long distance, or a human can march about 20 miles per day before resting, so generally if a town is 30 miles away from the hub, it would take the horse ~4 IRL hours to go there or a human 20 hours total (with other activities on the way that take time like cooking etc., and also sleeping could be fast forwarded). typically you'd want a horse
>so now that the problem is broken down, it doesn't seem so bad. now you have to make 4 IRL hours of horse riding enjoyable
>there could be bandits on one route. realistically, a fight like that could last 30 seconds or multiple days if it becomes a standoff. so let's say it's an intense scenario where you're stuck at a canyon and neither side is giving way. you could try to send a message after a while to both leave, or surrender, or engage in a high risk fight etc.
>also you could have the option to stalk groups across the roads, like indians and so on which could take hours and involve mechanics like hiding behind rocks on foot, sneaking into their camp at night, etc.

after you get that down, now you need to design realistic frontier towns with populations in the hundreds/low thousands. making all the buildings etc. based on maps of those towns and autistically researching 19th century urban design + incorporating features
>>
>>181019008
I think your NPCs are shit with shit AI and you are covering up your incompetence with "muh abstraction of day to day activity".Stop trying to cut corners.
>>
>>181018735
Don't get me wrong I absolutely think immersive sims are the genre of the future and I want to see what developers end up doing with them as processing power gets better.
I'd love a huge medieval world where all the npcs live their daily lives and the world itself feels like its living with the AI actually doing shit instead of walking about some preset route every day.

Problem is that you need to basically make procgen? everything with the same level of detail for there to be a point in having huge cities and realistic scale of things. Else you easily get something like Daggerfall where there's a shit ton of samey shit and while the dungeons and the world might be impressive from the massive size perspective they aren't very fun to play through.

Something DayZ did right was somehow make all that doing nothing part compelling. I'm not sure if it was the initial uniqueness of the damn thing but I could run around for hours and not seeing other players didn't really bother me. Problem was when you didn't see anyone, suddenly got shot and wasted hours of work. The gameplay wasn't very complicated and the PvE part was always shit but it was still really enjoyable to just waste hours in it.

It did get old after some time probably because the mod was abandoned in favor of the standalone which only got like one update per year or something.

A survival game on a realistic scale without multiplayer would be cool but I don't think one person could really pull off something like that.

yeah, making this texas simulator would require a team of people and consultations at least. since the main reason people like these kind of settings is wild west memes, it would be good to have somebody who knows 19th century firearms well like a reconstruction gunsmith so that dealing with paper cartidges and other bullshit in the game isn't innaccurate.

>need a guy who knows 19th century linguistics for dialogue and writing
>need a guy who knows 19th century firearms for combat/crafting mechanics
>need a guy who knows 19th century medicine for lore and maybe mechanics purposes, like having a traveling doctor quack or being able to lower your chance of dying from cholera by drinking some herbal stuff or whatever works
>need a guy who knows 19th century cooking so that your food mechanics etc. are on point
>need a guy who knows 19th century towns so that you don't goof the buildings and so on

I am somewhat competent at coding in Java, however I have never attempted to make a game.

I have an idea for a game that I intend to make and release in stages (which I may change upon research):
First: Kongregate
Second: Steam
Simultaneously: iOS & Android
The Steam and mobile versions of the game will be updated and include more content (aiming for 1-2 month later release)

I don't really understand engines yet and plan to watch a lot of tutorials/trial and error.

Does libGDX simply convert code I have written to be cross-plat? If I make the game with Unity can I still make a game cross-plat with libGDX?

unlearn that

Due to the nature of different platforms you still have to test it on the various platforms / fix a few small things here and there.

PC/Linux/OSX/Android are perfectly fine. Dunno about iOS. HTML5 exporting is complete dogshit, though.

This is more true than people realize.
Interactive planters in Skyrim won't even work if there isn't a naked NPC floating in the void to make them work. I don't even know what the NPC does but he's absolutely essential.

The train in Broken Steel is just a hat worn by the player.

Fuck Gamebryo.

Yes, you still have to code the different control and screen resolutions alternatives for it to pick up depending on where are you playing and make tweaks here and there. Haven't tested iOS, just Android and PC though.

Realized if I want to achieve my career, fitness, and social goals for the year I'm going to have to shelve my current project.
All ive got is a design doc, concept art and a few rigged character models.
Free to a good home if anyone wants any of it. Just credit me if you're successful

>Dynamic weather

Like get over yourself you made a shitty pixel game.
>Hand drawn pixels
What does that even mean? Compared to what, feet drawn?
>Original soundtrack
Well I I fucking hope your game has music, that's not a feature.

Also your first bullet point is missing a period.
