I've been playing Fire Emblem Fates (Special Edition, Conquest) for the first time and as far as gameplay goes, it's rather fun. But the story is kind of garbage and nonsensical (hell I barely know anything about the world), and the amount of dicksucking everyone does to you as the self-insert protag is beyond fucking distasteful. Is it me or is Effie's voice weirdly unfitting?

But having never played any of the 3DS games outside of Echoes I actually really like the mechanics like Pair Up/dual attack and the skills system, and the flexibility you have with the characters is extremely nice. Not being able to Support convo in the middle of a battle is something I need to get used to though.

Does the story get better, though?

I wasn't super invested in the GBA titles' stories, but even in their blandness they were inoffensive enough and enjoyable enough at their core for me to keep going and appreciate them. This game's story isn't just "nothing special", it's almost offensively awful so far, which is a shame because I'm enjoying the way it plays and it's clear they dropped a hefty amount of money onto fancy cutscenes and artwork for something so weak.

I don't know how many people played it, but in my professional opinion Megaman Battle Network 3 had the absolute best Postgame content ever created.

>None of this even takes into account the sheer amount of shit you can do that isn't in the postgame area that you're likely to have not done in the main playthrough, such as boss rematches, chip collection, sidequests, customization programs, ect.
>After you 100% literally everything else and think the game has nothing else to offer, the Final Boss of the main campaign upgrades to a form even harder than anything else you've fought up to that point.

Easily the best non-NG+ postgame I've ever seen, and even beating out most NG+-based postgames.

Newer FE games are strongly inspired by japanese Light Novel fantasy fiction and the subculture surrounding them.
It's just one of those things you probably won't enjoy unless you enjoy that whole style of storytelling.

Older FE games had very different influences, mostly popular historical and fantasy fiction novels of its time. You can even see that in the way things like worldbuilding was approached. The new games tend to assume the audience is automatically familiar with 'standard medieval fantasy fare' and sidelines the setting and worldbuilding to focus on other things. 6 and 7 were so focused on worldbuilding that entire story arcs were dedicated to exploring the political relationships of territories that didn't actually have a prominent role in the game's main story arc. It's picaresque told through monster-of-the-week conflict arcs vs. episodic bildungsroman with a sketch-scene format.
