Base surprise chance is 10% for both you and enemies. 75+ light gives you 25% more chance to surpise enemies for a total of 35%, 0 light gives enemies a 40% bonus for a total of 50%.

The only way to reduce enemy suprise chance to 0 is with trinkets or camping skills. Those are also the only ways to increase your chance to surprise enemies, caps at 65%.

Stacking surprise chance is OP btw.

So I just tried my first Champion quest. Went for a short one in the Warrens, first encounter had a Swine Skiver on the back row that critted and nearly brought my entire team to death's door on turn two. What do you do to deal with these things?

It's not.

You can't destroy the Hag's cauldron but you can destroy the pyre.

You can completly ignore the cauldron and quicky kill the Hag because she has only 135 HP and no PROT while the Fanatic has 203 HP, and 15% PROT that he often buffs to 40%.

He also deals much more damage that the Hag.

The bottom line is heals are fucking useless as long as the damage dealers still exist. The optimal play is to get rid of the damage source heal when the immediate danger is gone, not spam AoE 7 heal while getting hit by 6-14 with 7% crit chance and 3 blight.

Okay so how am I supposed to kill champion level crocodilian? Swarming Corruption deals over 15 dmg to whole party and applies acc debuff, Teeth Rake will fuck you party composition up and Apex Predator with a little bit of bad luck can be an unstoppable Brigand Pounder shot. I've already lost 4 champion level heroes in 3 different attempts to it and I'm really running out of ideas how to beat it.

Yes, this is when you are supposed to heal, when the enemy damage dealers are gone. The thing is Occultist can help with killing the damage dealers and then focus on healing when it's time to heal.

Take Vestal with 3 mega damage heroes, like HWY, GR, and Jester. Even on champion, with damage trinkets and finale you can pop two enemies round one usually, often before they get the chance to move. Vestal can't outheal 4 champion tier enemies, but she can usually break even once the deadliest one is killed, and catch up when there's 1-2 enemies left.

Not outpacing 4 enemies in heals isn't a problem when you start every fight with full hp.


Occultist is also very good, but the risk is very real. At champion level, any heal <6 from him is disappointing, with 0-4 being basically useless.

So do the courtyard dungeons save your progress considering their size? Or are you just supposed to follow the maps.

Sorry but blood doesn't fucking drop for me, how is that my fault that I can't provide it?
The crimson curse is bullshit gimmick, it's extremely easy to get it and I have no enough blood to supply ~18 cursed heroes.
Why the fuck am I supposed to kick them out of my roster just because of the gimmicky curse? I could use those heroes, they have upgrades and trinkets.

I really dislike that curse bullshit in DLC.
I literally had no deaths on Stygian and in new DLC save until now when I've ran out of blood, heroes started to act like they have affliction and pass their turns and move on their own, refuse heals and do fucking retarded shit. But I don't have afflictions, I know how to deal with stress, I don't even use Abbey and Tavern because I never need it.

Just started this game. Honestly, it seems easy. There isn't really a "game over" per say. I'v only had at most, 2 people die in a dungeon. 1 person dies on average and it's always the new ones.

I'm currently grinding easy missions until I get two teams of four people that are good. Right now, I can say that I'm really liking a grave robber and plague doctor, but, only because the utility they have. They can easily die and honestly the one who has had the best overall performance has been the highwayman and the crusader. Everybody else seems like they fly or fall so far.

Killed 2 crocs already but had 2 heroes with death door debuffs and passing turns / refusing to get heals because of "craving" status (that's not even "wasting", fuck you devs). Vestal died because of literally uncontrollable circumstances.

This curse is bullshit, it acts like affliction but affliction is a fair punishment and you can actually manage stress by playing correctly. How the fuck can I manage blood usage if I have no blood, it simply don't drop for me. I barely have any to use it on "wasting" heroes and "craving" are already skipping turns and refusing heals like afflicted heroes with "irrational" and "paranoid" and those are one of the worst afflictions in the game.

This is such a fucking bullshit mechanics. Gameplay is getting trashed because of RNG drops, not because of how you actually play the game and fight.
When I get affliction (and that never happens basically, only on Shambler or DD4) I know that I fucked up and could play better.
When I get "craving" or "wasting" because I have no fucking blood and get heroes act on their own and huge debuffs on them - I know that this BULLSHIT happened because the game provides no blood drops to supply those heroes and not because I played incorrectly.

Hell I didn't even use Abbey and Tavern because I never needed to cure stress, Sanitarium only for a couple of quirk locks. And my whole fucking roster is infected by the curse because it's so extremely common to get it, just 1(!) hit and your fucking hero is cursed.
And what, am I supposed to kick them? Are they not functional now? No they aren't, they don't even have stress, they have trinkets and all right skills and upgrades and I can finish the game with them no problem.
But hey fuck you, get no blood and start losing heroes because of bullshit debuffs.

Fucking retarded shit. I liked DD to finish it 3 times, Stygian included. And now it legit irritates me because of this shitty curse mechanics.

If you're playing normally you can take as much time as you want, throw away as many heroes as you want.

Your main goal is acquiring money and resources to upgrade your buildings, and gradually put together a team of heroes you expect will perform well on harder dungeons. Similarly, rather than rush towards bosses as soon as possible, you want to pick quests with Trinkets you think are good.

You are encouraged to take it slowly and get used to the rules and heroes you need to use later.

However, you can't do this on Stygian mode (the "Hard" mode). The Crimson Court DLC also has a time-based element so don't activate that if you want to take it easy, leave that til near the end of the game.

Depends.

If you want him to mark for others like Arbalest, it's good to have higher SPD so he marks first. If you want him to benefit from marks instead, his SPD should be lower than that of the hero who marks for him.

Quickdraw is an undisputed top-tier quirk, you can lock it on any hero. Speed is a very valuable (and also VERY RARE) stat boost to have, and the first turn is the most important turn. Speed and Accuracy quirks are literally the best quirks in the game, everything else is on a different tier below these.

So there are almost no scenarios where you wouldn't just lock it.

That being said, Bounty Hunter is actually one of the few heroes that don't need Speed since you want him to move after Marks have been placed by allies. I would still lock it, though, you probably won't get much better.

So I'm doing my first run on Radiant. I've been trying to not use the relaxed level restrictions (higher level heroes to lower level dungeons) but the increased experience gain is leaving me with too few properly leveled heroes for the bosses....

I find my Houndmaster whiffs his attacks more then I would like, so probably. Even on a utility hero, finishing off low health heroes is part of being useful.

I usually go for defensive stuff on Houndmaster because I just need him to stay alive, but I can't really wait for those to roll round if there's an accuracy quirk on the table to take instead.

So what's the general opinion on actionjack's class mods?

This isn't really true and entirely depends on the hero in question or other heroes in the party.

Quick Draw and On Guard both give +4 SPD on 1st turn, the latter being a straight upgrade tha also gives +5 DODGE.

Both Quick Reflexes and Early Riser give give +2 SPD but the latter only if light is above 75.

Many trinkets give bonus SPD on top of other vital bonuses. Matchman Stick is pretty much a must for Arbalest for that very reason, +10% DMG +3% CRT and +2 SPD with no penalties is just too good.

Arbalest camp skill gives +2 SPD to everyone but her. Which is actually good because she benefits from acting after other heroes mark for her.

Many heroes have SPD buffs. Those don't help on getting the 1st turn though so I'm not a fan, I'm also not a fan of wasting a turn to get the other one quicker.

This is patently untrue, though.

Most trinkets will provide something for every stats, but Speed is so consistently absent that people need to rely on Feather Crystals to get it. Matchman's Stick is a Trophy locked behind one of the most dangerous bosses, which is the second boss, in the Champion Weald which is literally the most dangerous zone in the entire game - it's as lategame as a trinket gets. Crescendo Box is one of the rarest drops; some people can play an entire run and feasibly never see one, meaning it's not even safe to risk giving to some heroes.

Similarly, the speed buffs that those trinkets give? All of them give +2, which is the same amount as from just Quick Reflexes alone. It's not just that Speed is rare and useful, but the Speed you get from Quirks is massively slot-efficient. Compare this to a damage quirk, which is 10-15% at most but trinkets give you 20-25%. Quirks give more than a trinket can where Speed is involved - in fact they are sometimes giving you DOUBLE the amount that Top Tier trinkets have.

Similarly you can never not stack Speed too much, as the way it is calculated means the faster you are the closer you get to being guaranteed as faster than enemies, and moving first in Darkest Dungeon = overpowered. You can only stack speed through quirks.

Speed Quirks are top-tier and truly nothing compares.

Also, the DLC introduced a lot of new SPD sources and most of the are just ridiculously high. Passive curse is +1 SPD, craving/wasting is +2, bloodlust is +4, drinking blood while passive gives a total of +4 as well.

Baron's Lash adds +4 SPD for cursed heroes. The mirror adds +5 SPD vs. bloodsuckers so basically +5 SPD at all times when in Courtyard. Mantra of Fasting gives +6 SPD if cursed hero is wasting.

Occultist is a good choice for a healer if you don't want to use a Vestal (either because the occultist is capable of bigger heals or because you want to use the abomination)

All classes have their roles and degrees of usefulness; it's the party composition that's important.

Occultists, Man at Arms, Plague Doctors, Houndmasters, Vestals, Bounty Hunters and Hellions are excellent choices in most party compositions because of their excellent utility in most positions, having abilities that can debuff, mark, stun multiple enemies, apply DoT or heal multiple allies on a single hero

Crusader, Flagellant, Abomination and Jesters have some utility but are mostly restricted by positioning, unable to do much if shuffled or moved to unfavorable positions

Highwayman and Grave Robber are more focused on dealing damage and evasion tanking, offering not much combat utility but have the best scouting and trap disarm outside combat. They are also less affected by shuffling with their own repositioning skills

Lepers and Arbalests require teams to be built around them but they hit extremely hard and are good for bosses. However, get shuffled and they lose a lot of effectiveness

Antiquarian exists solely to make money but she's still serviceable in teams with MaA, HWM or PDs by stacking blight or forcing a riposted ally to guard her. Pairing her with a Flagellant is also legit in that it gets the Flagellant to low hp faster in order to use his stronger abilities

Okay lads time to form a team that can take out Champion fanatic. I need some theory-crafting;
he has 3 turns which makes bleed/blight viable, but since his blight resistance is high bleed is the only option. I thought about bringing a mark-team but it relies on positioning too much and the fight starts on a shuffle anyway.
Jester and flagellant can hit both position 2/3 with their bleed attacks but their base-damage is too low to deal with the pyre, in case they're put on it.
The team composition should also fit to one of the maps, as it's not a fight similar to Shrieker where you start off immediately

Goddamn is this wait for the infestation to rise a real pain in the ass. I've been from none to low infestation for fucking weeks and not a single gatekeeper has appeared and so far, I've gotten at least 6 of my guys infected with vampire aids and I'm no where close to getting a invite from the Viscount. It's like the game wants to have a guerilla war with my hamlet, either my blood supply runs out or I can finally kill that sonvabitch the moment a invitation is at my grasp.

Use an arbalest, occultist, booty hunter and hellion, so you have multiple ways to deal with the matchman and marks to deal as much damage as possible to the cannon. Occultist can also debuff the melee brigands to reduce their damage since matchman and cannon are the priority

i wish i stored my saves right before the boss-fights, could have recorded them. If you can post yours, i can make a video from it as i already killed it on my current save.
