Be aware, Thargs are currently grabbing ships out of witchspace and giving out complementary rectal probings, it is advised you shoot the fuck out of them whenever possible, or just go with it if that's your thing, I ain't tellin you how to live. Apparently the Ayylmaos are rumbling again, inquire within if this means goddamned thing or if its just Braben trying to scare up some more money.

Banks are falling over themselves to lend money to Chris Roberts at an interest rate well below the rate of inflation. This is a real thing that is happening.

Thanks for clearing that up, not stupid as fuck Reddit person.
>>
Why is this shit so slow
>>
>>180755189
Why would a bank loan money at below the inflation rate?
>>
>>180752934
Neither. CIG took out a loan to pay for the massive Amazon bill that's incoming. They aren't going to pay that out of pocket any more than CR would make the game with his own money. He could have paid for the smaller original SC out of his own pocket, but used other people's money instead.
Ever wonder why?
>>180756126
Because the bank is getting it for half the rate from London's central bank then almost doubling it with CIG. CIG is almost double the return from bonds for the bank.

It's pretty textbook fallacious conspiracy theory shit. They're convinced they're right, and if they can't outright refute evidence that they're wrong, they'll just dismiss the source as biased or similar bullshit. And then as soon as something that even looks remotely negative happens, they'll leap on it to say "SEE? WE WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG". And then you explain why they're wrong, and if they can't refute it, they'll again either dismiss the source or come up with some mental gymnastics about why they're not wrong or you're "delusional".

No better than feminists or /pol/, really.

The thing that kills me about this is, who would they trust? Would they trust someone who doesn't like CIG if they said that CIG is fine? Why would anyone who doesn't like CIG ever do that? Would they just dismiss that person as a turncoat?

It's the same kind of crap you see with, like, climate change. Oooh, you can't trust those climate scientists because they're biased! If climate change wasn't proven false, they wouldn't make any money! Well who the fuck else is going to look into this shit? Someone who thinks it's fake isn't going to do the research because they're already convinced it's fake.

These people literally cannot be reasoned with. They're just stuck in their own ideological bubble. It's fucking asinine.

He hasn't thought that far ahead. He's just a reactionary. He doesn't have any original ideas of his own. Look at fucking Line of Defense, it's unbelievable that he could criticize any game when his shit is that disastrous.
>>
>>180762212
But CIG is CLEARLY trying to hide the fact that they're about to close down forever!

I'm not saying you should trust every source you come by, and sources certainly can have a conflict of interest, but that doesn't inherently make the information wrong or the argument bad. It just means you should scrutinize the argument a little more closely. That's argumentation 101.

Someone may be an SC streamer, but that doesn't mean they're wrong. And you can't just dismiss them because of it.

Still, the bigger problem I was getting at is that goons will dismiss any source that disagrees with them as biased or trying to hide something. It's insane.

>They aren't going to pay that out of pocket

It stays in their pocket, really? And what does it do there? Earn a laughable fraction of the interest the bank will be devouring for a loan they supposedly shouldn't even need?

Loans have to be paid back, plus interest. It always comes out of pocket eventually and you will always be worse off than if you had your own funds to begin with. The only reason to take out a loan is if you are broke and can't afford otherwise. If you think there's some kind of magical financial gymnastics that could ever make a loan sensible if you had sufficient funds of your own, you are delusional.

>He could have paid for the smaller original SC out of his own pocket, but used other people's money instead.

He doesn't have to pay back the crowd. Not interest, and not even the principal. It's free money in exchange for pictures of starships. Don't even begin to presume to equate what are essentially donations, with a bank loan.
>>
>>180768662
Why do people like you keep ignoring the fact that businesses take out loans like this every day? And yes, if you're a start-up you put up your business as collateral. There are dozens of reasons why it's a good idea.

But you don't care about that, do you?
>>
>>180768662
>It stays in their pocket, really?
They haven't received it yet, Dave Ramsey. They borrowed against a future payment from the government. Unless you think western society is going to collapse in the next few months, it will probably be ok.
>Loans have to be paid back, plus interest.
You're a bright one. The tiny interest they are paying is because they haven't spent their cash reserves. If they couldn't pay the loan off in full, the interest would be way more than 2x LIBOR.

CIG gets to spend Pounds while they are valuable and gets the most out of future money the government promised them. The bank get an inflow of cash from the governement, backed by CIG, at a time when Pounds will be struggling. Quit trying to think you can equate personal finance to how large multi national companies operate.

ICC missions, most of the time people are PvPing at the ICC probe or Kareah almost non stop now. Kinda DS3 like a little bit.
SM matches, although you get stuck in a room by yourself sometimes and have to restart the game from desktop.
AC matches, if you have a SH or Sabre, if not race until you can rent one, otherwise don't bother with AC.
Single player PS and VS which is my favorite since high framerate and no retards.
Racing, if you are ok with getting 'tism stomped every so often.

oh fuck buying something like that. I have to take one whole. I'm going to use it as a derelict honeypot and collect ships from greedy motherfuckers who think they found the find of the century. I estimate I can collect at least a dozen small cargo and mining ships this way before people catch on. Then I will use it for a distraction attack while the real force flanks whoever falls for fighting an Orion that is charging at them.
By the time both of those tricks are worn out, I should have at least one of each of the large ships by then.
I'll use triple-cross bait missions to collect the fighters where I false flag an attack on my own ship to bait protectors into a trap.
Once I have one of every ship safely hidden, I'll retire to seal clubbing newbies.

CIG fucking up, even royally, is not a reason for concern. You are only seeing a small slice of the total perspective. If every incompetent person was fired at once, your city would be a ghost town, and there would be no one at any hospitals.
There has never been anything but non-stories and conjecture. If there was a real problem, they probably would not have gotten the Escapist to settle out of court, and the project would have blown up by now.

was about to say this desu. crowdfunded games are already dead, this is just the single one with much of a future potentially ahead of it. there's zero remaining taste for kickstarted games. SC stands to potentially make or break the model as a success or not, and only because it branched off to its own funding platform.

ED stands as about the single present 'success' of any kickstarter title but the game is laughable in the depth of its scope compared to star citizen
>>
>>180794432
It's idiotic to be concerned about a loan in any respect. If a bank is willing to give you or your business a loan, that's a sign of financial strength, not weakness. From a business perspective, there are no sub prime business loans.

They're not trying to hide what it is. They're literally called concept sales. They're selling you an idea. There's no ambiguity or misdirection on their part. And they are genuinely trying to make a great game, despite what goons might want you to think.

They need money, and people are willing to give them money in exchange for what they're selling. There's nothing wrong with that. Honestly I feel like most people are just fucking irrational and emotional about money and markets.

They don't lie, they just keep adding stuff to the game as they get more money even after they quit adding stretch goals. The scope is way bigger than when they said that. They also always said the prices would creep up over time to incentivize backing early. They also do understand why some outsiders are frightened by those things, but have come to the conclusion that those people are idiots. If someone wants to donate 15 thousand dollars to you, you take it. You need to figure out what you're going to give them in return. If they just had a straight donation thing where you could enter in your own number and they didn't give anything back for large donations, even ships, you would probably be bitching and moaning about that instead, so fuck off.

>The jewry is the fact that they lie about their financials ("if the money stopped today we could finish SC")
That was before the game ballooned in scope.

>yet continue to push ship sales
They have no choice. They need to make money. What they have now won't last them forever. Most crowd-funded games grossly underestimate how much money they'll need. They get their funding and they forget about the money until a year or two later when they realize "oh fuck we're out of money". And then they either fold, or they scramble to get some capital. They should have been continuing to raise money the entire time. There's nothing greedy about that.

>with creeping prices.
Huh? Most of the recent ships have been mostly in-line with historical prices. Granted, old ships have increased in price over time, but that's pretty standard marketing to encourage early adoption. Hell, CIG loses out quite a bit by making some ships as expensive as they are. They'd make FAR more money if, say, the Idris was a quarter, or even half the price it is now. They make some ships intentionally expensive to *discourage* people from buying them for the purposes of game balance. They know roughly what they want the proportion of ships in the game to be, and they don't want 1,000 Idrises in the game day one.

>They also have little self-awareness and don't seem to understand why outsiders are frightened by their thousand-dollar dad packs
True, but that doesn't make them greedy or detestable.

>$40 missile consumables.
That's just dishonest. You could absolutely buy that with in-game currency. Hell CIG is intentionally limiting how much UEC you can buy with real money by imposing monthly limits on purchases (and that monthly limit is planned to be pretty low).

Say what you want about Chris, but he's not in this to make money. He's not trying to drive sales because he wants your shekles. He's a severely autistic space man and he needs money to make his autistic game.

They can do whatever the fuck they want. They are self publishing, so there is no one to satisfy but themselves. They don't owe the backers any timeline, this is old settled news. If you wanted a refund because you thought they exceeded the scope, you got your refund 2 years ago.

There's currently no way to earn in-game currency other than with real money. The entire Voyager Direct store should have been made obsolete by REC but it still stands since CIG is too money hungry, or Turbulent is too retarded to fix their 5 year old website.

the only reason piracy works or has ever worked is because merchants were unarmed, heavily armed escorts were the only solution pushing the risk of getting killed a little to high for the moderatly armed pirates. so putting weapons on merchant transport ships kills the usefulness of piracy as a job. insurance companys would go out of business in a arccorp minute if dumping cargo was standard procedure for merchants when pirates show up.

as for artificial speed caps that is the dumbest idea of them all, accelerate to turnaround point is not to complicated for people to understand, people play orbital mechanics simulator for fun, i think they can understand the simple turnaround at midpoint concept.

How? The whole purpose of a(lpha)UEC is for them to work the bugs out of the currency before going live with the one that counts. Also, aUEC can hyper inflate and they can wipe it so they can see what parts of the economy are creating the most wealth and where they can take the most currency out with money sinks without being a huge single burden.

SC is a single currency game with no reserve currency. If UEC hyper inflates, there is nothing they can do. If they have a test currency that everyone pretends with, they can work all this stuff out without fucking with people's actual money.

He was complaining because there was no way ot get in-game currency, which is patently false. Yes, aUEC is being used for the reasons you stated, but it's not relevant to this discussion. I think it is the web services. They said that different servers would run different areas of space. If each group of 24 or so needs a group of servers instead of just one, the web bill might be huge. Having that extra cash on hand for the hugest upgrade so far inb4 hurr durr, they left stuff out, is a good cushion to their reserves.
>>

>I wonder what consumables miners will have aside from the containers.
Well miners will already have to do shit work cargo runs in an aurora for who knows how long to even buy the starter mining ship.

Then they'll have to pay for someone to baby sit them while they mine because the starter mining ship is weaker than an Aurora MR. Additionally they'll either need to stop and go off load when they fill up two crates worth or pay someone to pick up the crates and transport them.

And there's no telling how often their mining laser might need to be repaired from use.

Just started playing Elite: Dangerous, got it on the Steam sale. Is this the right general?

So far, I've got stranded without fuel and got helped out by the Fuel Rats. Made a few million trading basic medicine in a Type-6 at a profit of 2k+ per unit, but that gravy train has ended. Managed to kill a couple of ships in an Eagle but still have a KDR of about 0.1. Want to join a gang or corp or something.

Miners are getting fucked over pretty hard from the start.
It seems cargo transport is the least fucked from the start, but the entire game loop is built around stopping or protecting these shipments, so there is direct intervention there.

It's all the same. It literally doesn't matter what you do. Nothing changes, power play doesn't matter, rank and affiliation are meaningless numbers that you start over every time you move. Best thing to do is go to Quince and do surface scan missions(needs Horizons) until you can afford the ship you want.
If you don't have Horizons, find a system in civil war and do low intensity conflict zones.

Your goal is to make scads of money to buy and equip a mid or top tier ship, spend a few hundred hours on Engineers, then blow your fucking brains out. That's all there is, the rest is for immersionfags a.k.a. dads.
>>
>>180809193
For trading, I use etn.io. Don't accept anything with less than a 4k per ton profit. For combat, you could try stacking a few massacre missions and heading to a conflict zone, though that may be tough on smaller ships. Easiest option for combat would be to go to a res site with a kill warrant scanner and do what you can until you have enough money or want to do something else
>>

No, that will never happen. Don't trust fdev to make it right in the future either. Enjoy your spess ship and try not to get hung up on details. Money is all you care about, the rest will leave you disappointed when you see how shallow and fake it is.
>>
>>180810732
I thought there'd be a load of emergent gameplay, teaming up to battle other players and take their turf using exciting new strategies and tactics that the devs never thought of, perhaps while role-playing as a space pirate. That sort of thing.

From what I've seen, there's tons of potential to build a little empire or start a gang or something like that.
>>
>>180811279
Most of the dads stick with Solo Play, so you'll never see them. These are also the people who the developers primarily cater to when it comes to designing the game, so don't expect them to give PvP any attention.

The game you just described is EVE.
>>
>>180811279
>there's tons of potential to build a little empire or start a gang or something like that

none whatsoever.
if you manage to bring a gaggle of autists together and work really hard (ie RP and grind) for several months and brown nose fd you can get your own system faction added to the game, which is functionally nothing but a name on a list of factions in the system in question

you can then go on to attempt to spread your imaginary groups' influence to other system, but it's still nothing more than a name on a list. it does literally nothing else. you get nothing for it, no benefits, nothing. your faction name on a list, either as a controlling faction or as a non-controlling faction. either way it doesn't do shit.

you could enroll with a powerplay figure and do jerbs for them to expand their influence and get favors, but once you hit the highest favor tier (1~ month of grinding) there is literally no reason to continue doing it, no matter if the person you're shilling for controls half the galaxy or not.

the best part is that even if you do decide to bring together a group to RP and get John Spessman installed as supreme galactic ruler or get your faction to control Sol, any determined group of players can undermine all your efforts from the safety of their own Private Group or even in solo :^)

>>180810354
basically what anon said. if you're anything like me, once you realise this, you will get a sudden urge to assemble a ship with the greatest possible jump range and go to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, because why the fuck not

nothing else to do anyway if you've gathered enough credits
>>
I bought E:D during the steam sale, any tips for a newbie?

And yes I do have a second monitor
>>
>>180812589
You get powerplay modules at rank 3 and if you maintain rank 5, you can get 50m per week. Even taking out what you would spend on a few cargo loads of powerplay materials, it's still a nice profit. Dads can affect the background sim from solo, private, but so can you.
>>
>>180812659
First of all, learn to separate memes from reality. Next, take your ship to a res site, equip a kill warrant scanner and make your first few mill. After that, grab a multirole ship like a cobra or a diamondback explorer and screw around for a while. Go do some exploring, hunt for crashed satellites on planets, do the srv time trial runs to gather engineering data. If you want a cool res site for combat, try Iota Hydri. The nearest station orbits inside the ring that the res sites are on.
>>
>>180812659
Looks like you and I are in the same boat. So far, I've learned:

If you get stranded in a system without fuel, you can tab out or get on another device and go to:
https://www.fuelrats.com/i-need-fuel/
They'll show up and help you out. Good to have a fuel scoop just in case, anyway.

There are sites that give good trading data:
http://etn.io/
http://www.elitedangeroustrading.com/commodities-market.aspx
Fill in some forms and find profitable trades, then buy and fit bigger and better cargo ships to exploit the trade route. Prices change, and sometimes the price data on those sites is out of date, so take that into account. It's worth having a look at the missions on offer in stations you're trading with, sometimes you can pick up an extra 50k or so for going to a system you were going to anyway.

After you've outfitted a ship, it might start running low on power, refusing to power up weapons or even the life support. You can turn unnecessary modules on and off using the interface screen on the right of the cockpit.

To fire the rail gun, hold the fire button until it fires.

Home is the default key for the cargo scoop.
>>
>>180814201
>>180813284
Thanks man.

Regarding trade - is that mostly like EVE, where I can buy goods at X station for $50 each and sell them at Y station for $100 each? Or something to that extent.
>>
>>180814327
Yep, same principle: Buy low, move it, sell high.
>>
>>180814327
>>180814557
Also, a good profit margin will have a few thousand in profit per unit. For example, until yesterday I was buying Basic Medicine for 170 and selling it in the next system for 3,020. Used the profit from that to buy a hauler, and increase the cargo limit ASAP. Then bought a Type-6 transport ship and was soon moving over ten times as much gear as the Sidewinder could.

Stop with this fucking meme. Removing stop gap measures from the schedule because CIG is going completely to the new networking system doesn't mean they are cutting anything from it. If Star Citizen become a monstrous blockbuster that get free advertisement without even paying for, crowdfunding will certainly rise again, but for a potentially worst result because most human being spend money on impulse rather than informed opinion.

The big winner will be any company who manage to pretend they are "another SC" and fooling Call of Duty kiddies with a game no different from CoD IW

ok #realtalk

anyone else impressed by how much they've got done? browse the studio report and see how many complicated things they've got working and feature complete for 3.0

sure they're taking ages to pump out ships and weapons and stuff, and the networking/patcher/netcode stuff is still early phase but it's impressive what they've done so far.

i dont know how easy it will be for them to implement all their solar systems in this new object container tech but if it's all using an editing tool to just copy/paste stuff and tweak variables it might be fast for them to create more.

of course, the jump point tech will need the network to be nailed down before they can link them together, maybe 12-18 months away before we start seeing the PU come together in a big way

Bullshit and buzzwords?

Are you saying that what I wrote is wrong?
Didnt they tell us last year after a long time of radio silence that they should be more open? Like in open development?

Right now it seems like they are just pretending to have stuff ready and being lose to release while in fact they are pretty fucking far away from reaching something even remotely close to their stated estimates.

Please enlighten me.
>>
>>180865314
>Didnt they tell us last year after a long time of radio silence that they should be more open?
And they did, which is why they have the schedule report and in-depth weekly updates from studio.

As for "weeks not months", Chris is autistic and can't make time estimates for shit and says shit on impulse without actually talking to his developers, what else is new? You can literally see what they have done and what they're working on, though. Go watch AtV.

"..being close to release.."

Sorry for typo.
Also, I'm not trolling. I just want a real discussion, because every time they start a thread about CIG giving short release estimates to increase hype and sale while knowingly being many months away from target, everyone just starts the whole "stop being impatient" "you have no idea how long time it takes to make a video game of this magnitude".

I am fully aware that this takes time and thats ok, but please be realistic with estimates. Just say July 2018 instead of just delaying it with 2 weeks every other week just to milk out cash on petty bike sales.
>>
>>180865586

Are you telling me Chris is the guy who sets the estimated release dates on the 3.0 schedule report?

Because that guy should be fucking replaced with somebody who is more realistic,

Why not just say December 2018 or later instead of just updating a 100% predictable date which seems like will always be "todays date + 6 weeks".
>>
>>180865673
>Just say July 2018 instead of just delaying it with 2 weeks every other week just to milk out cash on petty bike sales.
They're not trying to string anyone on.

The schedule report is their internal dev schedule prettied up a bit for the public. The management at CIG intentionally sets aggressive targets for their tasks and developers. And believe me, as someone who works as a software developer, devs can get pretty lazy unless you put the fire under their ass.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the management at CIG (except for Chris) knows how long a lot of this shit is going to take, but they still have to set aggressive deadlines for the devs.
>>
>>180866061
Also CIG very intentionally *stopped* giving release dates for patches. As they've said hundreds of times, the dates on the schedule report are purely development targets and should *NOT* be taken as release dates
>>

>>

multi-crew was a flop barely worth using for anyone who'd found one iota of success in the title already. they decided to neuter its attractiveness and effectiveness for newer players by cutting apart credits to be gained from it prior to the feature's inclusion in the game due to outcry from forumtards who were worried that sally shit and joe schmoe would be able to rake in millions of credits out the door with the help of a friend as opposed to suffering through the horrific early grind as they did.

exploration has been made more valuable to do outright in terms of credits but as a consequence the ranking system has now been skewed far, far upwards meaning that you will have to do even more exploration now to reach elite. passenger missions have also had their effectiveness upon exploration rank nerfed and iirc it was one of the few things that fdev went back and slapped players for, bringing them back from elite to a lower rank because the passenger missions weren't intended to be so good or some shit.

I mean, this is old news now, but it was cashflow management. They have a huge tax rebate coming from Her Majesty's government, but it's several months off.

So one thing they could do is convert all their euros and US dollars into pounds, pay the money to cover Foundry 42's expenses, and then when they get the tax rebate they convert all those pounds back to euros and dollars and send them back.

Or they do the same, but when the rebate comes keep all those pounds to cover next years' expenses.

Those both work but are terrible cashflow management. Money sitting around incurs opportunity cost. Short term investments often work, but most countries have capital gains taxes on top of corporate income taxes. You can make a paper profit and then take a loss on taxes. And every time you convert money back and forth you pay a fee.

So instead, they take a loan. Squadron 42 (and ONLY S42) is the property of Foundry 42, so that was the only collateral. The money is from a premier bank that only takes blue chip customers and charges very, very low interest. That basically amortizes the tax break so they don't have the cash sitting around. Then when the tax rebate comes in, it goes to the bank and retires the loan.

It's smart money management. I'm a b-school professor. I see stuff like this all the time. You can make or break a company with how you manage your available cash flow. Nice to see that they're doing so intelligently. That this bank even gave them the loan is a sign that they consider the business to be rock-solid, and they have access to financial information that we don't.

>tldr; Don't panic. This is them being wise. If anything, it's a sign of financial health.
>>
>>180756126

I don't know where anon got his information on that loan rate. My understanding is that it wasn't disclosed.

However, the short answer is that a bank is limited by available cash from their depositors plus what they can borrow from a reserve lender (national bank that loans to banks). That money, less operating costs, loans, and investments outstanding, is what's left. Some is required by a country's required reserve ratio (cash required to be kept on hand to prevent a run on the bank) and the rest is sitting idle burning a hole in their income statement.

So when you arrange all your risk-adjusted payouts, sometimes you'll have too much cash chasing too few investment opportunities. At that point earning below inflation on a blue chip loan is better than earning zero because you didn't invest at all.

However, in this case the obvious answer is that the loan % quoted is probably incorrect. That this bank took CIG as a customer at all is a huge signal of their financial health. Honestly, I'm stunned that they got the bank to give this deal to a startup computer game company at any interest rate.

Does anyone know how drones will function in the game?

Forgive me for making the comparison here, but you know how they worked in EVE, for example you had defensive drones or mining ones and they were all automated.

Will they be similar here, or do we need an operator for each?
>>
>>180892950
SC doesn't have drones that I am aware of. AI modules for multi crew stations is the closest thing. NPCs will be piloting ships directly and there are no limpets like in ED.
As far as what we have been told about stations that can be run by AI, the automated modules will be the most limited, hiring an NPC is supposed to be better, and having a player is the best.

Congratulations, you just reinvented banking.
The rate the bank that loaned the money to CIG gets it at around 1.33%, the loan to CIG was supposedly 2.5%. The bank is pocketing the difference. If CIG were to invest that money and beat the market rate for return, they could make a tidy profit. In reality, CIG probably got the extra liquidity now since they are about to have the mother of all internet bills in a few weeks.

I still wanna know how the stupid shower toilets are practical

do you sit on it and shower cause you can't stand directly under the nozzle
>>

You have apparently not lived yet.

Rest of the sci-fi aside, toilet showers is exactly the type of advancement I would expect in 900 years. This is centuries of knowledge distilled into the perfect form.

You're going to be shipping bulk materials in 3.0, as well as commodity items like alcohol or contraband.

There's nothing the player would need to consume. Manufacturing isn't, and never was, planned to be a player mechanic in SC.

You have to be facing the right way to dock. When the little hologram appears as you get close to the pad, you should be looking at the rear of your ship. The numbers that ID the pad will be at the front.

Yes, this is stupid for the outposts.

SC is never getting finished.

Gameplay features that haven't even been prototyped yet 5 years into dev:
>mining
>salvage
>jump-point mapping
>jump-point discovery
>data-running
>data interception
>cartography
>crafting
>fuel scoops
>boarding / ship-2-ship docking
>farming
>component overclocking
>selling
>>

>Manufacturing isn't, and never was, planned to be a player mechanic in SC.

Wrong. Chris wants players to be able to own their own factories and have to supply them
>>
>>180931726
That's honestly not even that many features.

Their only fault is being over ambitious. Seriously, you are supposed to even place livery inside ships (coffee mugs, portraits, trinkets). Not to mention two games in one (space sim + FPS). Holy shit.
