Not sure who this guy is writing for. Aren't like 99% of indie devs normal non-retards with day jobs that just make games in their free time for fun? I mean if someone had nothing at all and decided making games was a good way to get rich then yeah that's pretty stupid, but if you're that stupid I doubt you could make a game to begin with.

What the fuck does that have to do with e-begging on steam? You can release for free on itch and plenty of other places, and put whatever kind of spammy links and adds you want. On steam users pay for games and asking for money in game is a shitty thing that ruined the mobile gaming scene.

You have the kind of cancer mentality that shat all over the mobile market you delusional mong.

things that publishers do and how good they tend to be at it...
>taking your money: GREAT
>traditional box in store "publishing": very few do this anymore and there's probably no point to doing it so who knows if the ones that do are good at it or not
>active marketing: huge variance from dogshit worse than no experience diy'ing it all the way up to OK
>passive marketing (namebrand recognition): one of the few if only things they're still great at, a few hits under an umbrella is all it takes... which makes me wonder why there arent more "labels" instead of publishers

Most "publishers" know less about publishing indie games than you do. And they'll gladly fail at their job for the low low price of 50% revenue.

I hate devs who interpret "you probably won't have a major hit" as "make as many cheaply designed games as possible and sell them as quickly as possible, otherwise you'll STARVE".

It's good to keep scale in focus, but for fucks sake you can try to be at least a little creative.

lotto players are like the gambler's fallacy but even dumber
>>
>>180583813
make trajectory line a gradient, visible from the bow and decrease visibility until it reach the mid arc, you'd expect an archer to know at least half of the arrow's trajectory, if you're close then there's no point "guessing" the obvious, but if you need to arc your shot then that needs more skill
>>
>>180587886
>what exactly did you get into gamedev for if not to create systems of rules for structured play?
I do more. I'm making my games enjoyable as well.

by seeing how it plays on the weakest piece of equipment you have.

this is why it's good to keep an old laptop/desktop around. I don't think VM's can simulate a low spec environment yet.

Or you could just not give a fuck about listing minimum specs and only list the optimal specs.
>>
>>180588368
Sound and FX are more important than ragdolls, focus on them first. Doom doesn't have them, yet the shooting is still juicy.

Replies like this make me wonder whether the poster thought for even a second about what they typed. I replied to someone asking on an amateur game development board about making a fighting game. You think fucking Guilty Gear is an example of a feasibly developable fighting game for an independent developer? "Guilty gear exists, gotcha faggot!" is your callout to the implied assertion that it's foolish for an indie dev to take on established fighting series on their own turf? Fucking moron, holy shit.

>And Skullgirls?
If you can afford the time or money to create several thousand frames of high quality animation then I take back my reply, go ahead and try to make an indie fighting game that anyone gives a shit about.

A simple solution is to have hitboxes store a list of enemies they're hitting or have enemies store a list of hitboxes they've hit. If the other thing is in the list, don't have an effect.
>>
>>180594940
hey man, I understand. additions happen

Two bodies collide. I have the linear velocity of both, angular velocity of both, mass of both, and the collision position.
How do I calculate how much force the collision caused?

>>>/physics/
>>
>>180595210
Just pick some reasonable deceleration time and use that in the F=ma equation.
>>
>>180593072
looks good, better than a plain line, you might want to decrease visible part or leave it like that.
any reason why the archer need to stand still when aiming? for a 30sec time limit you'd expect the player to try to hit many targets while moving at the same time, but that might be tricky for a gamepad.
as for the gamepad, just make the player hold a button for slowmo/more precise aiming, that will make it faster than a mouse because you'd need to click, drag and adjust. there's no reason not to give gamepad users a bit of special treatment especially if that's your focus

This guy has no graphics card only an AMD processor and is running it like this with some kinda bug where if he rotates the camera on one level the game crashes.

Punch Planet and Cerebrawl are basically the only indie fighting games in development worth giving a shit about (unless you count Wavedash but that's platform fighter vaporware) and those have tons of dev time and are still in infancy stages and have teams of at least 3
basically, 1MA'ing a fighting game isn't feasible, and the odds you'll have an audience even if you do or get a team are low
>>
>>180595159
That makes sense.
Not really possible with collision_rectangle and the other functions though is it? Would require the attack has an actual mask index.
>>
>>180595889
Well at least it actually runs at 30 FPS now without a card. The memes will hopefully be dead by the games final product.

>>
>tfw people on the discord hate you

I don't see why it would be a problem. If the player object controls the hitbox, have the player store the list.
>>
>>180595954
Do you need to track multiple attacks at any given time, or just one? You could just increment a counter of how many times the enemy has been hit and reset it when the attack ends/when a new attack interrupts the current attack.

that's a reasonable amount, you could live off gamedev with that threshold.... but that's hard/impossible to do with advertiser pennies the people who do it this way treat gamedev like a factory business churning out games/websites/whatever the current approach is for guaranteed minimum views
what you want to do is actually get money from the users (whether this is selling the game or patreon or whatever works)
to do this requires 1) gaining an audience and 2) a product that the audience thinks is worth throwing money at

I didn't notice it yesterday, but the running animation is sort of terrible. The upper body is fine, but cover it with your hand a look just at the legs, you can't really see the legs moving back and forth, it looks like the thighs are always in the same position while just "switching color" (switching between which is the front and the back leg), also the skirt barely moves while she runs.

I'm not exactly great at animation either but I think the best way to "fix" it is to bring the legs closer together on frames 3 and 6, see pic for comparison (I know Kyo is in a full sprint while she's just jogging, but I didn't have a 6 frame jogging animation saved for reference).

Unity devs, how often do you use events for shit?

I've been using them a lot lately to separate things. e.g. if I want some screen shake when a gun is fired I run the shake code whenever a OnGunFired event is triggered.

Also, if you do use events, do you tend to use regular c# events or UnityEvents? I've recently starting using UnityEvents because its much nicer to be able to easily add responses to events through the inspector (the only downside being that it can awkward to manage for events with a lot of different parameters)

Okay still not dev, have some thoughts after playing your game for a bit:

First off your sound design is fucking awful, like bottom of the barrel garbage, all you did was use that "retro" sound generator thing, and that's it, so everything feels limp and terrible, consider at least mixing those beep boops together for something better, and grab some royalty free stock sounds, mix those in too, sound design is VERY important.

Your monsters are fucking annoying, barrel zombies are 100% not fun to fight, it worked in serious sam because sam has a pretty brisk movespeed, along with packing a ranged weapon with infinite ammo at all times, meaning you can deal with those guys at any given point if you're quick on the draw, here because you went for the rogue-like style of play and your base pistol doesn't have infinite ammo, I've found myself having to slowly run from those assholes because killing them with the knife still makes them explode.

Projectile enemies aren't fun to fight because they lead shots and projectiles travel fast, in games you draw inspiration from like Serious Sam and Doom, the player is capable of strafing around projectiles, that's not an option here and that feels like shit.

You have a lot of work to do to make this game feel and play better.

yes, it's unfortunate there's a race to the bottom, but it's not like people buy any old super-cheap game, it has to be a genre they like, not look like crap in the screenshots, (hopefully) have a good description, maybe some other things
and anyway you know tons of those games will never be played-- so that's basically free money, all they did was put up A Thing That Attracts, and the sale was made; the consumer that never plays never complains

Our basic system of navigation.

Player translates (jumps) into the outer system and has to move to the inner system star to do a superspace translation (long jump). Players can only translate between systems at large gravitational bodies (ie. stars).

Each point in the system is called a spacemark, which may or may not have enemies, story events or 'friendly' merchants awaiting the player.

The system is moving and a players subspace translation range is based on their fleet attributes. Spacemarks are hidden until the player translates into range, at which point they appear. Players can acquire special abilities that can reveal what is waiting at the next spacemark.

There is always a boss somewhere in a system. Players can choose to find them, or head straight for the star. Bosses are tied to missions, which give players extra loot and ability points.

It is up to the player how they choose to explore the system. They can rush through to the star in a matter of minutes (5-10) or they can spend time clearing the whole system (30 mins to an hour).

Here is the exploration aspect. Uncovering spacemarks and so on.

There are about 60 to 120 spacemarks per system, randomly generated.

Any UE4 particle system wizards here?

Trying my fucking hardest to make a particle that rotates with its velocity/direction but stays locked to the Z axis. It is supposed to be ripples of water rolling away from falling water. Velocity particles don't work because they always face the camera and I can't lock their axis properly. Square particles almost work, but for the fucking life of me I can't seem to get them to rotate with their velocity/direction, they just all shoot out in my planar cone facing a single direction, which looks like shit.

You are not a giant baby because you realized that you live in an aquarium with all plankton around you passively waiting for the day they get eaten alive. You are a baby because you are afraid of going into the wilds towards the guiding light. You can agonize for a while but eventually you will need to relax until you reach a cool-headed state. All laws around us are made to keep us running in the wheel and "live" a life of pleasures. Gamedev is not the only way out. Find your true path and follow it without regrets - you will not make it unless you keep trying. There are no retries here. Stay strong.

Minimalistic can work as long as its cohesive. Normies dont play ASCII games, but I might if it's fun. You know, you could just make your game and then either pay someone to make graphics for it or spend another couple months overhauling your placeholders. It's mostly a matter of patience, you don't need to be talented if you have time. But yeah, graphics aren't everything. For example Rimworld looks like absolute shit and that's like my most played game of last year.

You've got a point which I agree completely with. Games like Persona 5 or Guilty Gear Xrd have a really recognisable style that helps player remember them.
I had the same thought playing Baten Kaitos, the art direction is so peculiar it makes the game really stand out.

Problem is, doing that requires to be a good artist, a good modeler if you're doing 3D, and everything has to fit tightly together and be consistant. If anything doesn't, it'll stand out even more.
Stuff like vertex normal editing/custom shaders (like they did in GGXrd) is also very time consuming, even for studios.

I never said that though. I'd just rather work on it for a while more until I have something I think is decent and that works, to get critique on. I'm still learning the most basic of shit and planning, haven't got much of a game as of yet.
>>
>>180637960
fair enough
keep in mind that even the most basic progress is a better contribution to the general than this whole conversation chain
>>

went into gamedev with the generic dumb nodev "all games are easy I'm gonna make hard games" attitude, nobody found them fun, got my shit in order real quick and strived for actual fun over difficulty. literally took me 6 jam entries to get my first "too easy" feedback, and still there were people who said it was too hard for them

not saying you shouldn't make hard games, but if you decide to actually do so make sure the first levels are like granny difficulty. people are so, so much slower to pick things up than you think
>>
>>180638042

>>
Are you memeifying your game /agdg/?

No, I don't mean filling it with rage faces. I'm talking about viral advertising from your own players.

Look at Jojo. There's exposure for it everywhere on the internet. Why? Memes. Enemy stands. Tons of music references. To be continued. Ways that Jojo fans can subversively talk to each other while dragging other people into the franchise.

Try it yourself. Next time you're writing dialogue, make up a word (e.g. smeg/smeghead from red dwarf) then use it throughout your game. Now your fans can use that word too!

tl;dr: Stop working on gameplay. Make your game into a meme.
>>
>>180632820

Because indie games are usually scrapping by for assets and resources. Good stylish stuff is minimized to bare basic interfaces because, suprise, there isn't alot of resources like time, money, or knowledge to go into that.
>>
Is it worth using a specific engine for the type of game you're making, meaning it will probably look like everything else people shit out in the genre, or make your own system in a more general engine?

If you learn UE4 it can basically do anything you want in terms of 3D. Haven't seen too much 2D from it.
Use whatever engine
a) Produces the game as close to your intention as possible
b) Makes it the least amount of ballache
UE4 and Unity are good at both of these if you know how to use them.
>>
>>180638384
hint: the third bollock that you feed into the lerp function is the percentage of the way that it goes between the first two bollocks
>>
>>180638084
I came to the same conclusion after my other friend played it yesterday since everyone but me (which doesn't count) had issues with even the first levels.
At least they had a good laugh out of it, so all's not lost.

>>180638281
Use an engine for 3D unless you hate yourself. They're a lot more versatile for looks than people think, Gears of war and Guilty gear Xrd are the same engine and look completely different.

>>180638384
Wouldn't just reversing the input work ?

>>180638495
Using only sprites in UE4 is a little bit dumb to be honest, you can do so much more with it.
>>
>>180638384
>speed up exponentially
Lerp is a linear interpolation, so you'd need to pass the result through an exponential function as well, unless there's already a function that interpolates non-linearily in Unity.
>>
>>180638146
Sure as long as you try to gain programming knowledge as you develop it.
You should start with pong.
>>
>>180638281
>meaning it will probably look like everything else people shit out in the genre
That doesn't have to be the case, just look at Dragon Ball Fighterz (UE4)
>>
>>180638281
the engine has nothing to do with what the game looks like unless you're using asset store shit.

the solution to that is to not use asset store shit.
>>
>>180638384
if your lerp is moving fast to slow, you're technically using lerp wrong (I say technically because sure, you can keep doing what you have). if you use lerp the way it was intended, it should be give you constant speed, though that doesn't stop people from changing the way they use it to suit their needs.

look into easing functions: http://easings.net/

s lot of the free tweening libraries available in the asset store should have code to let you do easing
>>
>>180622686
Have you removed your games from Steam yet?
>>
>>180638281
An engine as is, will limit you to a certain kind of game anyways.

Its fine if you want to make a run-of-the-mill action game, since there really is no better way to make them than through an engine.

Its not fine if you want to make something which doesn't fit into any existing mold.

I have tried that both in Unity and in Blender. When it jumps from a keyframe to the next it does this jerky movement that isn't accurate so it seems like Unity just can't handle zero interpolation. It looks like it's trying to do the interpolation in one frame and overshoots and then corrects.

a visual novel
not really a 100% percent interactive novel, it will also feature some RPG elements to break up the reading.

RPG stuff like
>spaceship which can be unpgraded and acts as staging point or a base
>limited degree of character stat development so that some situations could be solved differently
>some sort of food, equipment and money meter to balance
>perhaps some sort of faction standing thing

basically Farscape, the game

if you mean, what I will do in this project
currently I do everything.
if I get a programmer on board, I will do the writing
if I get a writer on board, I will do the programming
either way I will also have to do art unless an artist hops on board

>>180641637
>Which engine?
If you take the programmer position, then you get to decide on the engine.
If I am the programmer, I will use SDL or Windows Forms.

>How much will collaborators be paid?
I don't get any money for this. So won't collaborators.

When the project is ready, it will be released free and open source with some sort of license which permits bits and pieces of it to be used for commercial purposes and also permits extensive modifications of it to be used for commercial purposes. This is to prevent any collab partner from putting the finished game on some storefront and thus cheating money out of the other collaborators who made the game for free. However, collaborators should still be able to use bits and pieces they made in their other projects. Collaborator would be able to sell the project independently if they modify it enough that it is by no possible means just an asset flip.

There is a second chart that shows the curves. >>180643084
>There is a second chart that shows the curves
Yeah I know. The curves look exactly like they do in Blender (where it works) and in Unity it fucks it all up. I've tried googling and people pretty much had similar problems. Even if I go in and edit them myself in Unity it still fucks up. The engine simply isn't equipped to deal with it from what I can see.

do it badly. it's scary to try to make something for yourself. some people think, "well, I have to get things right and I have to do everything correctly. I can't make any mistakes."
that's wrong! just do a bad first draft. it's a low resolution plan, but it doesn't have to be perfect. some attempt is way better than none. you get a lot of benefit from doing it badly. you're doing it for yourself, anyways. it's not like someone else is going to evaluate it so just do the best you can do.

Hardship and suffering is what forges a boy into a man, into a proper human being. The greatest minds, the greatest artists, the greatest leaders and heroes didn't reach the peaks they did by being coddled in their family's arms.

If you really think that pain is always inherently bad and evil, then there's nothing more for us to discuss since we have entirely polar points of view. Read up some Schopenhauer though, he's a sad cunt just like you and you'll probably enjoy what he has to say.

>Name at least 5 reasons why would someone waste time on C++ if he doesn't want to become a programmer.

-C++ and C are the basis of modern computer architecture
-Far easier than learning assembly
-Gives a fundamental understanding of how the platform you're trying to make games on works.
-Allows you to tweak things you might make at a base level instead of having to go through abstractions to create anything
-Gives you access to millions of lines of snippets created, for free, all over the internet for you to pull from to accomplish unique or niche functions that your game maker or game engine may not support otherwise

So what? He'll just die in the end like everyone else, a fate forced upon him by his parents (after, of course, they die: they were so selfish that they forced him to witness their deaths, whereas they never had to see him die.)

Good, yes, glad we agree.

>If you choose to inflict it on your own children before they've even been conceived, then you are a monster.
If my parents thought like you, then I wouldn't have been able to inflict pain unto myself even if I wanted to.

Giving birth is the correct choice, because then you also give him the chance to do what they want, which can include killing themselves if they want nothing or the "pain is too much". But until they're born you have no idea whether they'll suffer or be grateful for it. You suffered and hated it, tough luck. I suffered and learned to love it, so I'm fucking thankful my parents weren't dumbasses like you.

see drawing as the same as sculpting.

you start with the big marble blocks, which are the basic shapes (circle, sphere, triangle, cone, cube, square, S shape) then you arrange such shapes into like a low poly version of what you're trying to make, then you carve using those same shapes like sculpting tools and keep refining your shape until it resembles what you want.

Usually the secret is to have good reference from google images to bring ideas to the tablet.

Artists even use photobashing to make photorealistic concept art.
Some use 3D as the base.

I suggest you may try low poly, is easy enough and can make pleasing results in fast time.

It takes years of hard work to be good at art, maybe a decade.

don't feel bad if your brain doesn't get it.
If you draw from imagination every day, after some months you'll start to get it, and after three years your brain can say : I get it.

You can ask questions on /ic/ but the advice is the same in the end: learn perspective first, then learn planes, then value and contrast, then learn to render a 3D shape, then learn color theory.
Also learn anatomy and proportions.

Good luck.
