I get weird things like this where the idle time shoots up and surpasses the fixed frame time. I don't know if I'm interpreting this wrong but as I understand it, fixed time is the sum of the time spent running all the stuff that gets listed below, and idle time should be the cpu waiting for the next frame, aka (Fixed Frame Time) - (Fixed Time), if the fixed time exceeds the fixed frame time then there's no idle and you just lost a frame. The game dropping a frame because of idle time doesn't make sense.

Mine already is, I just need to modify some stuff to make it so that the player has multiple lives and gets a game-over instead of just restarting the level, but that's not a hard thing to do.
Problem is, I've got very little content, and little polish. I've been fucking around with the gameplay and couple visuals too much

I have been following it for a while. There are different cases, but what hurts a bit is that they are treating games in general as a waste of time and a drug you need to get completely rid of.
>>
>>180370669
because 99.9% of games are a waste of time.
they're barelly above porn and anime (comics) in terms of art.

you don't see people thinking chess or sports as waste of time though.

make something meaningfull to people.
>>
>>180370669
If you're addicted then you should probably stop completely, just like anything.
>>
>>180370320
>is it an indie game or..?
This is the most offensive part of this bait and I'm not even sure this was on purpose.
Indie fighters tend to be deeper than AAA ones since they don't go for mainstream appeal.
>>
>>180370669
they're right
>>
>>180370669
If they think games are negatively affecting their lives then there's nothing wrong with quitting it completely. It's a slippery slope for them, you don't tell an alcoholic to simply drink in moderation.

do you consider music a waste of time because of shitty generic pop idols?

do you consider film a waste of time because there's porn?

same deal with games.

you never see people complaining chess, go, shogi, pacman, street fighter II, civilization, soccer, final fantasy, castlevania sotn as waste of times though.

people only complains about shitty games with nothing to it that uses skinner boxes to make people adict.

Game story idea:
Generic damsel in distress story. The main character is a strong white male who must go save his true love whom was kidnapped by the generic evil character. The gameplay can be whatever you want. Throughout the game you never see the character's true love, but there's always reinforcement about how much the main character loves this character.

Finally after beating the entire game and defeating the big bad boss, you are reunited with your true love. Your true love is a male. It's important to never give hints about the main character being gay or that the damsel in distress is actually male.

Bonus points if the big bad character is female.

Triggering feminazis for the entire game and then at the very end they realize it was a "good" story the whole time.
There's a high chance that someone will be triggered before even finishing the game, calling the game misogynistic, you can then point and laugh.

even assuming you're really that cynical about your own work, why would the twist give you more "points" than simply making a gay love story? what's the point of the fakeout?

really? you would spend all that effort just for this lame culture war "troll"? everyone would just know your game was a gay love story the day after it came out anyway.

It's pretty fun, but I guess that I'll have to drop them at some point. There're some devs here (2 at least) that are going this route and I bet their games are more complex than what I have in mind.

To the mentioned blueprintdevs, if you have any advice, I'm all ears.
>>
>>180377569
Stop replying to the shitposter, you don't need to drop blueprints since they are designed to be used in finished games.
The usual way is blueprint for almost everything + some C++ for stuff the blueprints can't cover properly.

You don't need to drop them at any point. Don't listen to retards (of which this thread has several). MAYBE you'll need to convert something to C++ or something but cross that bridge when you come to it.

UE4's renderer will most likely take up more processing power than any of your gameplay logic.

Two dead projects, one prototype, and one more project in and I haven't had to use any C++ in UE4. It's really needed for the most complex stuff.
The only other problem with blueprints is that doing math is tedious. They should make some "function" mode where you can just input like "(A*X+B)^2" and get the corresponding inputs for your parameters.

So I am curious ... I know that programming is basically two main skills - knowing a language and be able to solve problems using that language.

Now the first one has more resources online than I know what do with, but do any of you know of a good source (course, tutorials, blog, whatever) that gets you thinking like a programmer and introduce the non-language skills you need to actually code something cool, that can recommend for a beginner?

>thinking like a programmer
you have realized something valuable. I haven't found such resource for that, which directly tells you how to think. I think this is something you can learn through cs courses, or by practicing for long time.

One thing I know is, there is data stored, and there is the processing of that data. Computer doesn't need to know things. The data stored doesn't need to represent things how they actually are in real world. It doesn't need to make sense to you. Second, computers are fast, so sometimes writing some code which might look like a long way, can be no problem.

But you're in agdg, just start making games, when you come across a problem which you don't know how to overcome, search the internet. Through time you'll have the necessary mindset.

YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS

No seriously, I posted my prototype idea here that I was already working on and a week later someone completely stole it and started making a game based on it.

>>
>>180382904
yes, 3d is way easier in terms of the asset pipeline. it's not an accident that so many older 2d games actually used prerendered assets. the people who made isometric rpgs and rts games would have fucking worn their hands down to the bone if those endless sprites had to be drawn in 2d.

to this day there are acceptable levels to sexualizing teenagers in media
all teen movies in the 80s did it (even if the actors were in their 20s/30s, the characters were portrayed as ~15)
and they still do it now, except the actors are getting even closer in age to the characters they portray
but sexualizing a character any younger than 14 is a massive no-go
your game won't make it onto any service if you do that

>The use of the plural pronouns they, them, themselves, or their with a grammatically singular antecedent dates back at least to 1300, and such constructions have been used by many admired writers, including William Makepeace Thackeray ("A person can't help their birth"), George Bernard Shaw ("To do a person in means to kill them"), and Anne Morrow Lindbergh ("When you love someone you do not love them all the time"). Despite the apparent grammatical disagreement between a singular antecedent like someone and the plural pronoun them, the construction is so widespread both in print and in speech that it often passes unnoticed.

hey let's make up new pronouns despite the fact that using they as a singular pronoun of indeterminate gender has a 700 year tradition

Well, since I don't think I can steal the "top-down spaceships shooter" -idea, I just stole the aesthetic of the game. And if I change that aesthetic (yes, by changing the colours), it's not the same anymore. (by my reasoning, at least)

>it's just amazing how you're trying to justify this.

Maybe, but all 2D skills are used in 3D so to get good in 3D you would need to practice 2D skills and also 3D skills which would mean it would take even longer to get to an acceptable level so I'd rather make games in 2D.

>while 2d it's less precise, like drawing a painting by hand instead of just solving some equations
actually I honestly see 3D more like painting by hand due to the amount of precision 3D software holds in its measurements. Like, look at this image for example. Since you're limited to "this square or that square" with pixel art, being off by one unit is a huge. Everything has to be in the right spot to convey the right image. On the other hand, with a bigger MS paint image I could draw a pretty crappy shiggy diggy and it would still be recognizable as long as it's sorta in the ballpark. Same goes for 3D (even though it also adds on a few different challenges in the process).

Though getting good topo is kinda like solving a sudoku puzzle now that I think about it.

>>
>>180384974
Nah, you really can't.

Do you think someone could steal the Mayhem League's dev game in a single day? World of Horror dev? Risk of Rain?

Sure you could "pretend" you stole it by assembling a scene that looks identical, like hand-drawing one of those world of horror cards, but it's just that, pretending .You don't make a game in a couple of days, thus you can't steal a game in a couple of days.

It takes months to make the assets and programming required to get a functioning prototype. If someone could do that in 3 days, then I have bad news for you son, you were barely 1% in the development of your game.

Small main character pixel platformer with guns, that would be enough to qualify as stolen here

You can rip off any game or steal it by agdg standards in a single day. The reason to not do it is entirely moral and ethical.

For one thing the chance of someone on /agdg/ cloning your game is extremely slim. This space ship clone is only like the third clone I've seen in the past 2 years here. All of those other clone games were given up eventually, and the original dev still continued working on their game.

And another thing, it shouldn't matter. You're the one with all the passion to make this game, you will see the game through because you love the game. A cloner tends to move on to other things because they don't have the same love for your idea.

Ideaguys of agdg lend me some help: What basic combos should a non-combo focused game have? I think the most basic thing is to have a three strike light attack combo and a three strike heavy attack combo where the light attacks can combo into the heavy attacks as well. There's also for example dark souls where you keep comboing light attacks until you run out of stamina. Are there any must have attacks? Like charge attacks etc.

for analog stick settings right now I'm thinking:
-- left stick/right stick/disable sticks
-- invert x/invert y/invert both/no inversion
-- x sensitivity
-- y sensitivity

also I was thinking about having it where you set the sensitivity of the sticks by selecting the item and them pushing the stick as far as you want it to be to trigger movement and pressing A (or whatever button) while holding it there
is there any problem with that, like is it going to feel finicky?

>>
Ok, I left /agdg/ like a year ago, stop programming and shit.
But I have an idea I want to share, I really want to make this game but don't think anyone will like to play it, so I need your opinions.
Basically Digimon world 1 + Mount & Blade. The focus is on the units customization, the game will play like a RTS but without having a direct control of the units.
The player will have a little army and only can play on battles by screaming commands that units can follow or not.
Each unit will start as a base human without classes or anything, but will have stats that the player can level up however he wants. Each unit will be like a hero/champion/etc, and will have individual level, stats, item, personality, whatever.
On each battle the player will loot the enemies like in mount and blade and arm his own units, the player will have a pool of experience that could use to level up his units after a battle, the player could choose to level up all units, some, or only one if he want to make an OP unit and left all the others with shitty stats.
Basically that, I know it will be kinda weird to equip and customize each unit, because there could be many units of the player team (something like 100 to 200) but I think I could make that work making a system were the player can modify all units or squads at the same time.
Well, what /agdg/ think of that idea? People will like it?

The whole change from Greenlight is to kill trading card abusing.

With greenlight people paid 100 dollars once, and then could release 50+ titles on steam, give out keys for free, make all the money on trading cards.

In the new system, those games cost the abusers 100 dollars each since no one is actually buying these games.

Just combat stuff.

+ Added two new moves to the fist moveset, rounding out the very last of the light attack strings (for Combo+2 and Combo+3). I have one last heavy attack to do and the entire fist weapons moveset is complete.

+Adjusted the post-dodge lerp-step to be wider, lock on better, and have a longer post-dodge trigger window. It's now almost impossible to accidentally dodge outside of viable combo range.

+Fixed an issue with Block Stocking that would lead to you always stocking your last move when blocking, even if you didn't interrupt an animation to do so (making "calling" moves stocked in one combo during a later combo extremely inconsistent).

+Tweaks to knockback behavior so that enemies hit with a Smash attack (a finisher) that also has a downspike anim will "trip" on landing rather than tumble. Previously only tripping attacks could trip on landing, meaning no attack that knocked an enemy flat could ever be a finisher (which was stupid).

+Animation timing and effect adjustments to a lot of the kicking animations.

There were steam groups for it.

Also they didn't necessarily need to give the games away for free, they could make a bundle of 10 shitty games, sell it for $1, 10 games generate 30 cards = $1.50 minimum.

So people could buy bundles, use a bot to farm the cards and then actually sell them for a profit. The buyer makes money, the dev makes money, and crucially Valve also makes money, all while no one plays the game.

Well just releasing a game is risky. What happens if you release the game, it becomes successful and then some asshole releases the sequel to it? What happens if someone files a trademark for your IP? Technically you are protected by copyright laws but that isn't enough to discourage patent trolls and other shitheads.
If you don't want to deal with that kinda shit you have to found your own company and then file a trademark(for your company name and IP). You also might wanna take some proper legal counseling to make sure you and your business are fully protected. Overall this can cost up to 5000$, depending on where you live.

I don't think the number of areas matters, what you have to do is show people why your game isn't another generic 2D sidescroller but something unique and fun.

Also get your friends, family and other assholes to donate, even if you have to give them the money. People like to be on the winning team and if it looks like your kickstarter is going to succeed they are more likely to join it.
>>
>>180399214

Well in fact, I'm angry against myself because the game is taking so long to finish. I was unable to create any kind of community until now, but I think the sandbox is the feature everybody is waiting for.
So I took more than 6 months to create a good sandbox mode, with a level editor to share levels. It was really hard, because I had to create some kind of custom compiler to check the code people write using symbols, and notify errors in a way everybody will understand.
But it's almost done, so I hope monthly contests and such will help to build a community.

I intend to release a new version June 26th, with the sandbox, the level editor and the solution browser to check everybody's solutions (it's a game breaking pro tool).
We will see if people like it.

>at the end of the day after all these years i still don't understand what kind of game you're trying to create
I'm making a puzzle game where you control a robot by creating an artificial intelligence made of symbols. Some of those symbols are acting like "if...then" programming words, so the robot can take decisions based on its surroundings.

>I am the robot
>I don't see any obstacle
>So I'm moving forward
>Wait I see a wall
>So I turn to the right
>I am reaching the exit
>I am glad

TL;DR
It's a game for programmer fags who like programming so much they want to program the characters in the games they are playing.

>Also any ideas on what to add?
i'd start with spicing up/tweaking the landscape geometry and lighting/colors
the excessive floor tiling, almost complete absence of any color manipulation and differences in elevation being mostly things like boxes or extruded blocks of land make your game look more like these advanced java games on mobile phones from late 00's than late 90's 2.5d platformers

webm related is a good example of a grassy area, you have flower textures and plain grass textures mixed up, some fence visible in the front and bigger 2d flowers having a skewing animation (visible right at the start); also notice that 2d part of the backgrounds is actually quite detailed
some clever use of untextured triangles too
your areas could benefit from little details like leaves moving in the wind, sparkles in the cave and shit like that, would make it all feel more alive

aside from the scenery i find your enemies pretty unimpressive, they're oddly sized compared to player character and mammoth is just bleh in general, i hope it's just wip
and get rid of that "white disappearing dust" absolutely everywhere, spice your graphical effects up, use some additive blending

if you still can do it you should consider adding bending paths but that might be just too much for gm:s

that's my opinions, a lot of them because there are too many pixelshit platformers and not enough 2.5d so good luck

>i think your target audience would be casuals who don't know programming or who are new to programming. looks similar to code.org and i'm not sure how it'll be challenging/entertaining enough.
It's a game mainly intended for programmers, with true challenges towards the end of each chapter.
I intend to release a mobile / tablet version for kids in 2018, they will be my second audience.

>the trailer suggests a story element - is there much of a story?
The game's philosophy relies around the fact that every education is a kind of manipulation, but you have to accept to be manipulated to learn. The question is when you stop to be manipulated.
There will be short cutscenes at the end of each chapter (in gold and dark versions, depending on how you finished the levels). The actual story with complete explanations will be revealed in the long cutscenes at the end of the game.

>inb4 it's stupid to make long cutscenes at the end of a game, particularly a puzzle game

>Why can't I just hardcode the movement commands that will make it reach the goal?
You can hardcode movements if you want to. Each level is intended to be completed in multiple ways, using the resources you have.
Pic related: instead of creating a bridge, you are avoiding all stars and so you found a secret path.

>Do you need to run the AI on multiple levels without changing it to pass?
Each level has its own AI, intended to teach you something new. The first half of each chapter is there to train you and the second half is there to be harder. If you are stuck, you can just go to the next chapter.

>Also do you have autism? Not insulting you, your website just reads like someone with autism wrote it.

-Don't have everything be so blocky for the platforms, have ramps, etc.
-The tide on the sand level looks stationary and unconnected, make the waves move.
-Add some textures to the ground so they're not flat.
Sand level: Why is there moss/grass around the stone, the leaves on the plam trees look 2d while the tree is 2.5d. Add some dunes, sandcastles, coconuts, water.
Grass level: Put some flowers in, some longer grass, add one more type of tree, add birds to it or fruit. Get rid of the wooden crates and make them natural parts of design (fallen tree, etc)
Ice level: Dripping water, puddles that effect speed/slide, icicles

Don't recycle the rocky background hill on Sand/Forest levels.

If this is going on KickStarter each level needs to look as varied as possible.

You've only shown two enemies which were beaten by jumping over them.
Put an anthill on the beach with constant flow of Ants and Flying Ants coming out (flying at jump height)
Make the mammoth much bigger so it is an obstacle (puzzle to get over it rather than just jump, maybe have to wait for an icicle to fall from the ceiling to act as a double jump).

It looks like it's ready to go on Kickstarter now, but making these changes would be much more effective.

Demo when? Can I follow on steam?

There are other games with a grid where you put symbols, but mine is the only one where you use logic gates to make decisions. Pic related shows you how the late game levels will look like, with hundreds of tiny robots making micro decisions.
And here ares one million nanomachines gathering to create a gigantic space cube:

Why the fuck didn't you show anything interesting? That stupid "where did they come from" bit was totally useless, like anyone cares about that in a game like yours, you should have shown a montage of the craziest possible levels/cubes. FFS man think about the people who don't know your game at all and watched the trailer, what do they get out of it? You can make a cube run around and avoid walls, whoop-di-fucking-doo.
And I get that you are proud of the features you coded but do you honestly think anyone thought "oh wow I can press play, pause and step-by-step, fucking amazing" after watching the tools part? I was honestly mad after watching it.

I only think the title you choose may sound blasphemous on some places. I would've put something more religion-friendly if you're really going international.

Also, get better art for cube-chan as soon as possible.

It's actually pretty good at what it does - decentralization. Illegal activities aside, there are a lot of countries out there where free speech is restricted and decentralization is one of the things that helps combat it. Normies tend to focus entirely on the cryptocurrency aspect and don't even realize that most of these have an underlying platform that the currency was created to support. Distribution requires nodes, nodes require hardware, work, and maintenance, and the currency is designed to pay for that in a distributed manner.

In any case, I think a distributed MUD or something would be cool, and probably difficult as fuck to implement.

Okay, I shouldn't say useless, but for a lot of the uses people are talking about there are much less resource intensive ways of going about it.

It's being worked on, still a relatively new field. The Ethereum blockchain itself has sustainability issues. Every node is supposed to copy the blockchain in its entirety. The blockchain contains the complete history of every single transaction ever made. That includes ether trades as well as API calls. That mean that every state of every distributed application is stored on the blockchain, forever, and has to be copied.

Clearly that's not something that can continue forever, but pruning the blockchain introduces security risks. I'll let people more specialized in that field work on it, though. I just want to make some quick cryptobucks.

>Why the fuck didn't you show anything interesting? That stupid "where did they come from" bit was totally useless, like anyone cares about that in a game like yours, you should have shown a montage of the craziest possible levels/cubes.
I made the mistake of showing one million nanomachines, so the camera is so far away you don't understand what is on screen. Besides, the game is still only half done, so I just showed a couple of levels. The levels with hundreds of robots are still not there and I didn't want to make a false promise by showing a fake level I would have created only for the trailer.

>And I get that you are proud of the features you coded but do you honestly think anyone thought "oh wow I can press play, pause and step-by-step, fucking amazing" after watching the tools part? I was honestly mad after watching it.
Anybody would tell you that a 2 minutes 30 seconds trailer with voice over is a suicide, and yet there are 40% people watching it until the end (yeah you watched it until the end and you got mad, but still).

Those parts you dislike are actually stuff that matters for people who like the genre. Usually those games have no story whatsoever and they are lacking the tools you need to fully exploit the potential of the programming system.
I think the final trailer will be far much closer to what you are talking about, there will be impressive contraptions and such, but it will still feature some of the stuff you are considering useless.

>I only think the title you choose may sound blasphemous on some places. I would've put something more religion-friendly if you're really going international.
I choose the name because I didn't want to be confused with some software to teach kids something, but there are now more and more of those games so there is no more problem (I started this project in late 2012).
