I've got a question about DS3's weapons. A primary complaint I see about DS3 is that straight swords are "the best" and no other weapons are comparable in terms of versatility, DPS, etc. As someone that has used straight swords throughout DS1-3 I have always found this to be the case. Straight swords just seem to me to be more reliable because you can get in more hits quicker before having to roll/block an enemy counter attack. I've played around with greatswords and the like in DS1-3 and their attack speeds seem to all still be the same (too slow for me) so I guess I'm missing what changed in 3 to suddenly make straight swords "the best" since to me they've always been my preference.

Are enemies more aggressive now so you can't get in as many hits? Was there some sort of attack damage/speed nerf that I'm not seeing because my experience with greatswords is limited?

Also poise / hyperarmor used to be nonexistent until Ashes of Ariandel patch so you could just mash away with straightswords and stunlock ultra users.

Now hyper armor being actually functional means that slower weapons are slightly more useful in PvP.

I would disagree with Straight swords being "the best" though, it's just that they're a very newbie friendly way to play the game as you don't have to worry about stamina usage or spacing that much compared to the slower / heavier weapons or have as much aiming issues as spears.

Straight swords do a lot of damage for how little stamina they require to wield.

The startup time to get an attack in is very short, so you don't have to worry about delays and timing.

They also have more range than one would assume from their length.

Against enemies with no poise, you just press R1 until they die.

SS's in DS3 have better damage output than in DS1 and 2. Normally these weapons are lower than average damage to make up for their combination of good speed, good range and good wide swing arc / versatile moveset. In DS3 however the SS 1HR1 swings so quickly for a 400+AR weapon that it's one of the better damage options in the game.
The 1HR1 also seems to have ideal stagger duration/poise damage per swing speed for PvE. Probably because most of the PvE was tested and tuned around a Longsword. Enemies that can be abnormally awkward with some weapons just get stunlocked to death with a SS, because the SS just happens to dish out a longer stagger duration with a swing speed that's fast enough to prevent mobs breaking out.
They're some of the few weapons which are genuinely better off 1 handed, which allows them to work well with shields or other offhands. Their WAs are some of the most useful in the game both for PvE and PvP. Their moveset is the most versatile of any weapon class.

There's just never a situation where a SS is a bad choice. They were probably designed to be, and function as a new player crutch.

Finally finished my pyromancer build, figured I'd try something different but basically the exact same thing. The idea is to shoot people with a huge bow at a distance, and attack with weeablades up-close. Also maximum spooking with hidden body and the not-shown untrue white ring to be a fake ghost sometimes. Also dark damage forever.

Judging the majority of the playerbase for soulsgames, I think that's how most boss fights go.

Just beat DS3 + DLC. Avoided most discussion about it since it came out. What's everyone's problem with it again? I thought it was great and had some of the best bosses and areas of the series. It's better than 2 imo, which is also a great game, well at least SotFS is.

Is the problem linearity, nostalgia bait, bad design? I want to know what I'm missing. For what it's worth I didn't touch PVP much, or magic, so perhaps I'm missing stuff.

Linearity is kinda shit as far as character progression goes. The areas themselves range from ok to amazing. Nostalgia shit is a bit all over the place and we got some tasteful callbacks (like the whole deal with farron), some uncalled for or misplaced callbacks (like Solaire's stuff or Andre) or straight up insults (like Anor Londo and most of the ds2 callbacks). The main issue with 3 for me is wasted potential

Are there any ultra greatswords in DaS2 that have horizontal r1s? I hate those shitty down-up vertical attacks.

That really comes down to how long you spend between characters. The start of the game is just super linear, which isn't a big deal if you don't try to rush making a bunch of characters at once, which should not really be an issue because respecs exist.

Nah, DaS2 PvP was like playing underwater, there were no full eye orbs, it was almost always broken, and SM made it inherently unbalanced while removing any reason to ever stop leveling.

If you're determined though, I'd take a pyromancy spell like black flame for those inevitable "pocket sand" moments.

Nope. If you wanted to one shot someone with magic in DaS1, you had to hit them with Dark Bead point blank. In DaS2, you could one shot people with all kinds of shit at range, and the shit rolls and lag made it extremely easy to be hit by it.

Currently playing Ringed City after many months inactivity. I've read that quality builds are shit now. is that true?
I currently have a refined Dark Sword and 40/40 with 15 faith and blessed weapon.
Whats the current default setup for quality builds? I don't even know which rings i should use.

DS2s PVP was definitely the most varied, and complex.
The game's design sort of herds each playthrough to a different school of PVP.
A build for invasion that tries to minimize soul memory often times isn't the best build for the SL dependent arena.
Of course twinks still exist but that's just part and parcel with Dark Souls.

That is incorrect, they're simply not THE best build anymore. Dark sword is perfectly fine for PvE and the two rings you always want to have are Favor and Prisoner's chain because if you don't use it (on melee builds only) you're pretty much gimping yourself

Technically you don't need PChain on a quality build, since you can reach the Vigor and Endurance soft caps easily without them. It's a fine ring for when you're not at SL120 yet, but once you reach the caps the absorption and loss of a ring slot become a liability.

PChain's damage taken penalty was greatly reduced, it's effectively 15 free levels at all but the highest levels now. Steel Protection more than mitigates the physical penalty now, but you're still far better off dodging attacks instead.

Chloranthy is a good all-around ring, but ultimately unnecessary with a straight sword build, especially with FaP+3.

Blessed Weapon is a good spell, but not strictly necessary for PvE. If you want you can use the Reddit glitch to respec into spells for free, but in general a Warrior shouldn't really be going for spells anyway.

I currently have 17 Strength, 18 Dexterity and 48 Intelligence.

Mugenmonkey claims that with these stats, my physical should increase by 2, and my magic by 53. My physical is actually increased by 46 AR, not 2, for some reason. I don't know why.

I'm gonna figure out what the fuck is going on, but as of right now, Darkmoon Longbow seems to be buffed, or Mugenmonkey is just glitched, or maybe its my game.

So I reallocated my stats, and for some fucking reason it isn't displaying the dex scaling properly. At 40 Dex/60 Int with Moonlight Arrows equipped my AR is a total of 385. I'm very fucking confused right now. Even without moonlight arrows, which for some reason increase the AR by WAY more than 75, its still hugely different from what Mugenmonkey says.

Also, I'm doing not-mediocre damage with it, which is fucking even stranger.

This is my favorite build. It's an excellent pyro build that can make use of several weapons, and with a switch of rings you can easily turn it into a dark magic build. Obviously you don't use all these weapons at once if you want armor with poise.

You can nudge it up to 128 but then you have to deal with 150 shitters in arena, though if you're invading you have to deal with them even at 120.

It's very bog-standard quality.

You could shave down your fashion slightly and try for a bigger weapon, Dark Sword is a decent weapon but there are better ones out there. All the more so since you're stacking Chloranthy and Grass Crest with 40 Endurance and FaP+3, so you can afford to swing an ultra around as much as you want.

Maybe also swap Steel Protection for Life Ring. A lot of things in TRC are good at dealing non-physical damage, and Life Ring is more all-purpose than Steel Protection if you're good at rolling.

Nah, DS1 looks okay for the first half of it until the budget cuts really start hitting in, other than that yer fucked.
Unless you have nostalgia or just got used to the old games then going back to them now feels like ass, controls are limited, weapon movesets are limited, everything feels clunky and generally plays like shid.

The only real upside is that it's not nearly as balanced as the later games, so you can still get away with just slapping on super heavy armor, iron flesh grabbing a black knight weapon then trading R1s with human sized bosses and winning.
