So I just completed my first Victoria 2 game as Brazil. I didn't do too well. I started as a secondary power and ended as a secondary power in pretty much the same spot. Got some questions.

1. How do I stop my economy crashing every time I'm sphered by a Great Power?
2.Is there a way to stop the flood of Communist and Fascist rebels in the late game?

Get sphered by a good GP like France or UK. When you get sphered you get access to the GP's market so If the GP has abundent RGOs like France, Germany, or UK than you will access to lots of resources you normally wouldn't as well as a new place to buy or sell your produce. Having access to a GP's market and pops is actually really good, so I don't know why it would crash.

There's a standard tech progression I do pretty much every game.

Basic Chem. -> Medicine -> Idealism -> State and Govt. -> -Biologism -> N&I -> Whatever

Basically, get Medicine up as early as possible, then research all the techs which up your research speed and literacy gain (in that order). Obviously it depends on what country you're playing; if you have high literacy already (ie Prussia or Sweden) you can skip out on those, if you need to war right away get some military techs, etc.

But you always want to get your research speed techs out ASAP, to the point where I'll time techs so that it ends in the year before the next philosophy one becomes available, then start researching on Jan 1st of the year.

If you want to colonize and/or have a strong navy you shouldn't forget to get the naval base techs too.

1. Just become a GP and focus on sphering countries with good RGOs. It's not hard to do as a country like Brazil.

2. Keep militancy low by regularly passing reforms. The main thing that rises pop militancy is a lack of life and everyday goods, and reform desire.

3. Start with techs that give you additional research points and population growth. Then get the techs that give you more national focus, if you have enough primary pop cultures to take advantage of them. Then get the prestige techs. Later you'll want to get the commerce techs to make your industry profitable, army techs to build new units, navy techs for new ships, and the techs for gas attacks.

4. Brazil lacks mining RGOs which can be an issue if you want to industrialize fast. Start off with cotton, regular clothes, wine and liquor factories. Secure access to coal RGOs and build glass factories. As soon as your tropical wood RGOs switch to rubber, build electric gear factories. Do note that your industry will be largely unprofitable until you get most of the commerce techs, and a large amount of clerks in every factory (need 50% literacy to promote them in masse)

Usually after you've maxed Philosophy and Chemistry for the time being and picked up State and Government, but like I've said it depends on a number of factors.

Sweden can all but ignore it, and Prussia can put it off for a few decades or until it incorporates the lower literacy South German pops. Colonization-heavy nations might want to get naval techs first and Austria/France/Italians should really get Army techs up early. It depends, but Social Thought is one of the most important lines of research early game.

You'll actually want to be sphered by a GP as the shogunate in HPM. The westernization reforms will be fairly cheaper.

Your goal should be to westernize ASAP and enact the "peace with the emperor" decision. That way you can prevent the Boshin War and unify Japan far earlier, before Japan even gets the first Meiji event in the 60s or so.

For a liqqy Egypt run what should I do

I think historically the khedives wanted to expand more into africa to make egypt a sort of colonial relatively strong power of its own. Ismail the one who saw the opening of the canal said something like "my country is not in africa anymore but in europe" at some point. Realistically if egypt did have its shit together somehow they would have invariably come up with or been introduced to arab pan nationalism, as in real life they had their UAR, in this game they would have just developed it earlier

So it would make sense for me to form arab union. But I don't really want to. I just want to be egypt. Maybe even just give up the levant at the start. The thing is I already have all the territory I want. So what's left? Industrializing? I mean I guess, but that would be boring, I want at least some kind of goal.
