I wanted to get myself in a position where...I could still...advise Jagex, and still, you know, I loved RuneScape. I absolutely wanted to keep working on it, but I didn't want the responsibility and the stress, um, of being in charge of something so big an so important. So I started looking at selling my remaining stake in Jagex. But it wasn't meant to be a radical shift, it was just meant to be a way I didn't have to be a director of a huge company.

Whilst I'd been quite stressed being in charge, I suddenly realized that, when I wasn't in charge, all of a sudden what I had to say didn't matter so much. And you know, people were doing things not the way I wanted them to do them. And, that was the whole point, of course. The whole point was I didn't want to be responsible, and, uh, you know, I just wanted to be able to advise and help, and...and...and, you know, nurture the game I've made without having to be so responsible. But as soon as that responsibility was taken away, I, I realized...oh dear. Um...you can't have it...you can't have it both ways. Without responsibility, you also don't have the authority. You can't...and...and you know, you can't have one without the other. And by trying to make myself less stressed and reduce the responsibility, I'd also reduced the authority. And all of a sudden I'd found that...you know...uh...I didn't have the final say on things, and other-you know-other people had the final say on things, and...I'd made a mistake, quite frankly. Eventually it just reached the point where I just wasn't doing anything for Jagex anymore. But there was no sort of date where I left. I didn't have a sort of leaving due, or anything like that. It just sort of faded away.

Maybe. Leaving and seeing the direction the game took outside of his control certainly caused him no shortage of anguish, however. Earlier in the documentary, they describe conditions that would have made anyone else give up on the game, but he and the rest of the founders pushed through and kept the game going. You might be able to do Kree (Arma GWD 1) since you have 99 ranged, but you probably need a war tortoise (67 summoning) at least. Even then, you'll probably have a hard time unless you find a group. Join a clan, perhaps.

You know, I think that, unironically, Jagex are one of the nicest game devs out there, and are genuinely alright people.

Like look at all their charity events, their humble origins, all the shit they do and how they interact with the community, constantly raising awareness of mental health, physical disabilities and crisis by promoting it in game and giving you the rewards. Especially nice to see them touch on topics that hit close for, what I imagine is a disproportionate amount, of topics regarding mental health and the depression epidemic.

That's pretty much my point, if I'm going to autism grind I might as well just continue with RS3 where I've done 99% of it. And if PvM is the only draw to OSRS then RS3's PvM is still good anyway.

It just sucks to see Jagex completely water down the personality that the game used to have. Trying to make detailed/realistic textures that only end up blurry and on a shit model is aids. The soul of the game has been bleeding out over the past few years and I can't even put it down to an aging game because up until 2012/13 they were still doing pretty well at it.
