You should be changing the genre. Shmups are an extremely stale genre.
>>
First for making the controls menu spawn an emacs/vim window
>>
>>176127745
changing the controls in a text file is better because it gives your player the freedom to use whatever text editor he wants instead of being forced to use the menu you made

Fug. Some bugs I couldn't straight up fix because I couldn't replicate, but I put in work arounds that means they should never break the game or ruin the experience

Thank you all for your patience

This, if you spend time making a controls menu that's as good as your favorite text editor then you'll never finish your game.

wow, so fucking difficult.
>>
>letting your players edit a text file to change the control

fucking modern gamers need to die.
in my game to edit the control you have to e-mail me or one of the other devs to change the game code then re-download the game.

if you can't do something as simple as an e-mail then you're a lazy fuck millennial who doesn't deserve to be playing my game to begin with.

rebindable key UI is actually pretty hard to get right imo
how do you cancel a keybind? if it's by pressing esc, how do you bind esc
what happens when you bind two functions to a single key?
can you rebind menu navigation? how do you make sure you don't break the keybinds menu if you do? etc.

For those of you who saw the VG league stuff at >>176090406 and the discussion that followed last night I can now say that yes, this is indeed a thing that's happening!

Currently I'm taking suggestions for player names as well as blender heads to use for those players.

You can suggest a player that would fit well with a blender you already have or just spitball names and/or blenders you have around that you think might fit well with the theme of /agdg/

The current list of players is here:

https://implyingrigged.info/wiki//agdg/

but these names were placed years ago and some of them aren't so relevant to agdg anymore. Feel free to share some ideas. We have two to three weeks to go from idea to properly formatted head model for as many or as few players as we can muster.

If someone's feeling very bold we also optionally could use a stadium. Ultimately this can just boil down to a themed grass texture and a skybox, but if you're interested in that look here:
https://implyingrigged.info/wiki/Pro_Evolution_Soccer_2017/Stadiums

Info on converting blender models for PES17:
https://implyingrigged.info/wiki/User:BasedSmugleaf/benis_productions#My_Blender_Setup
https://implyingrigged.info/wiki/Pro_Evolution_Soccer_2016/Faces

Info for getting PES17:
https://implyingrigged.info/wiki/Pro_Evolution_Soccer_2017/Installation

I'll pop in regularly as I straighten out the back-end stuff for virtual divegrass, so if you have anything to share just put it out here and I'll see it.
>>
>>176128832
Happens upon startup, and even after multiple restarts. I'm pretty sure my keyboard is US standard, though my locale is EN (Canada) but that shouldn't affect anything.
The real confusing part about this is why it works fine in the menu and not in-game. And you should see about fixing that controller thing, it couldn't be more complicated than a simple "or" check.

That's running inside the editor, there's a massive performance impact when you have a couple of shaders and run it in the editor. I still get 60fps with some minimal drops here and there though, and it's capped to 60fps

Just fixed the code, should work now with a controller plugged in

So the behavior you're seeing seems like the behavior from the controller thing (fixed now), or if somehow a cutscene event triggered tht disabled player control, but that can't happen on the menu, so I'm guessing it's a weird variation on the controller. Try now and see

You can change just the pitch/skybox and it will carry most of the effect of a custom stadium because that's what you're looking at most of the time during a game, but you can change the models of the surrounding structures too. To do that I'd have to "reserve" a stadium to overwrite though so different teams don't get into change conflicts.

For the VG league most people don't go that hard though. I wouldn't put a ton of effort in there, the blender heads are more important.

This morning I found this baby in my folder of abandoned projects, and I think I'm going to give it another shot because it looks really pretty

Currently it's somewhat ""playable"" in the sense that you can go around, hit monsters, equip weapons etc, but there are no levels, quests or anything resembling progress

I spent most of my day rewriting old bad code, organizing stuff and improving the map editor. Let's see how far I can go this time before abandoning it again

P.S. the graphics are from opengameart

I want to code my own raster painter application that paints in a 3D space.
how hard would be to code a basic paint application like mypaint or paint but that paint 3D pixels rather than 2D pixels?
Also how hard would be to also implement in said application basic vertex modeling, like a basic blender?
Also, in the same application being able to draw vector lines, like SAI?
And have basic 3D toon rendering capabilities of the previous shit.

I would appreciate a list of what topics, both math and CS do I need to learn before trying to make this.

Many thanks.

Why most AI in strategy games are so retarded and soulless? Not just at being a skilled player without cheating, but also being human-like in games where diplomacy is a factor(4xs, grand strategies, etc).
I never tried it, but I believe it shouldn't be too hard to model a behavior network that take many things in consideration before making a decision(too simplistic and it will make retarded moves, like in civ games where AIs call you a warmonger for retaliating). Considering the scope of strategy games are pretty small(there isn't a gigantic set of moves that you can do, just a handful of them), it shouldn't be too hard to make something that more or less resembles human behavior.

I've added direction based attacks to the combo details. The current combo tree is 4 basic swing attacks which then starts over. Giving a forward input for the second attack lets you do a constant repeatable stab. Doing a delayed input attack after the 4th swing would do the long fancy samurai unsheathing attack I've shown in the past.

The weird thing is, my stab here is bugged. If you watch the gif, you can see that when attacking one of the enemies, it stops doing damage and the sword seems to vanish. If you look at the top left, you can see a white line appearing during that time, indicating the sword is somehow appearing at the coordinates 0,0. Why though, I'm not so sure. It's something I'll have to figure out.

DD14 Demo is live!

Original Mode: This is the intro from the first demo but the difficulty has been alleviated.

Arrange Mode: This is a remix of the intro stage (new background elements, different enemy formations, etc). This is the new baseline intended experience and will be a bit more difficult.

Also added in the display settings is the ability to turn your hitbox visible full time if you want.
Blue sadly couldn't make it to the party but she will be in the next!

I hope it is at least a little fun for everyone! Do try both modes (and characters if you want, they get different stage dialogue).

-Please use focus button if you want to dodge a dense pattern or to concentrate your attacks. That is what it is intended for.
-Use the burst button for large damage (or scoring). This is a resource that regenerates fairly quickly so use it as you please (with Lore the lower the gauge is the less damage is does so be aware).
-Use dust to destroy enemy attacks on screen if it is getting too tough. Sana will automatically use dust to defend herself if she has any when she gets hit. For reference it is the resource that looks like a bottle. *note: Sana uses this resource for both her burst and dust ability but she regenerates it very fast)*

*final note* You have a special ability. When you tap, release and then hold shoot your shot takes on a different color and there is a portrait change. This lasts a few seconds and it regenerates your burst or dust resource 3 times faster than normal. Use this to your advantage if you can keep it up*

Going to take a break and eat something and then check out some demos!

It's been done a few times and it's always successful. Quality and originality are second to actually existing and pumping out content. Do you remember what Breeding Season used to look like before S-Purple got on? It was a LoK mod originally and it got huge anyways.

H-games in general make a solid amount of money.

>>176148821
I know you're shitposting, but the opposite is true. Simply being an h-game can get your foot in the door when it comes to monetizing your game.
Top DLSite games make $20~$50k after cuts and fees. Patreon titles get shit like pic related.

And no, this isn't survivorship bias. There aren't many people actually making and monetizing h-games in the first place, at least not in the West. Just existing is pretty huge.

The major distinction between a hentai game funded through patreon, and a normal game with fetishbait but nothing explicit, is this:

You can very quickly and consistently get monthly funding with a patreon game. But you have a ceiling on your earnings, somewhere around 10-30k per month. That sounds like a lot, and it is. But a normal game, sold through steam, has the potential to make you a few million over a few years. Most normal games fail, of course, so it's wiser to go for the easy patreon cash.

I just played this as Sana and its pretty fun. I feel like the dust is pretty op though, I know she's a novice character and all but at times when the boss isn't moving you can just stay still and dust whenever it recharges. Also I ran into a weird glitch where I paused the game, tabbed out for a short while and when I came back the menu options weren't there and it was just the background, and none of the buttons seemed to do anything.
But besides that, it's enjoyable and I'm going to play it with the other characters now and maybe try the harder difficulty

Thank you for the feedback! I am glad you enjoyed it, anon. Yes I figured Sana was going to end up unbalanced at the start. I hope you have fun with Lore and the other mode!

I just finished playing with Lore, and again, it was pretty fun. Although I was thinking it would be nice if you added some kind of sound effect to indicate that you're hitting an enemy. There were times where I was looking at my character and not the boss and didn't even realise that I wasn't hitting her. I can only imagine that would be even worse in more difficult, more chaotic fights later in the game.
Also for Sana maybe you should consider copying Imperishable Night and make it so that instead of auto dust, you have to press a button right after being hit to save yourself. It would make her feel less cheap and op, as well as make it more fun I think.

Playing Lore on arranged was the most fun for me, even though I had to continue like three times because I'm not particularly good at bullet hell games.
I should add actually that I played arranged first, when I said I was going to try the harder difficulty I didn't realise that the one in red wasn't in the game yet, I guess I didn't read your original post properly. I did go back and play original as Lore afterwards, and even though I enjoyed it less I feel like the difficulty was well balanced, as its easy enough that someone like me who's not very good at bullet hells can get through it but still has enough challenge that it doesn't feel brain-dead easy. To be honest I don't really know why I enjoyed Arranged more considering Original is much more balanced for my skill level, I guess I just enjoy getting my ass handed to me.
Sana was fun at first since I was new to the game, but I don't think there's any reason for me to want to play her now that I've played it before. I just feel like she's a bit too overpowered, like I said before. If the hardest difficulty was implemented and Sana was better balanced then I'm sure I'd enjoy playing it as her.

Thank you everyone who's given feedback on Kick-in' so far! Demo day has been extremely helpful for figuring out what to tweak.
Made a few changes (which I'm not pushing to the build on itch.io just yet)

-Controls text box in the first fighter intro screen now scrolls much, much faster
-Enemy has been slightly sped up. Even for a starter enemy, he was slightly too slow. Both of his attacks have been sped up by ~13 frames.
-Player dodge has been sped up slightly (~2 frames), and the hitbox data for it has been tweaked so that you're no longer vulnerable on the first 2 frames that you or the game initiates the return dodge. Webm related; Left dodge is using the old frame data scheme, Right dodge is using the new one (although both are using the same faster timing since they both share the same frame timings)

what do you do when you're competent enough at coding (c#) to make simple things like platformers, jrpgs, shooters, basic puzzles and board games etc, but you're not expert level yet enough to start your own serious project? whenever I look up tutorials its always beginner shit like that.

For Lore her burst serves two purposes. Secondary is that it deals large damage and adds score bonus each time it ticks damage on a target. The lower her gauge goes (less blue flames/the numbers under her lives) the less damage and bonus score it gives. What happened is you either ran out of burst or it was so low it was doing sub normal shot damage.

Its primary function is a scoring mechanic. It acts as an extension of her graze hit box. It grazes all enemy bullets inside of it at a rate of 60 times each per second. For Lore grazing is a huge chunk of her scoring capability (since it gives a x10,000 multiplier at the end of a stage). The burst being able to do low damage at low gauge is important because it can help someone hit a boss and not accidentally kill them while farming for higher graze.

Sana is a much simpler character for scoring and doesn't have anything abnormal outside of getting a score bonus when her burst hits an enemy. It does add graze if I recall for each bullet it destroys on his way across the screen but it is extremely minimal compared to Lore. Blue has her own personal scoring mechanics as well but that is for another time.

Lastly if you get your chain to x10 or higher then when you use dust it will add each bullet it eats directly to your score with a multiplier based on the current chain. Otherwise below x10 it just cancels enemy attacks. Lots of little things if anyone finds it fun and wants to score in the game.

If you meant you hold the button while you are still above 0.0/5.0 and it doesn't shoot at all then yes I absolutely need to look into that and find out what is going on, Thank you!

so if I wanted to use two seperate backgrounds in GameMaker how would I go about doing that? Like I want the level within my wall objects to be one background, and the background outside of them to be another. I'm thinking of making the room's background the outer background, and make objects with just the sprite and no other code, and using those as like tiles, but I'm afraid of that taking up a lot of memory (my rooms are fairly large for my game). I'd use the draw event but I heard that goes over your objects, which would make it so you can't see the playable level.
>>
>>176156901
Yeah I did mean that I'm holding down the button and its not firing even while above 0 charge. I was really worried that I was just being stupid, but I just when to test it by repeatedly using it and keeping an eye on my charge, and I'm positive that sometimes its not firing when it should. It only seemed to happen when I'm holding down the fire button though, so I thought maybe that was what you meant when you said "or it was so low it was doing sub normal shot damage", I thought maybe you made it so that if you hold down the fire button and the laser button it will do whatever does the most damage, but at other times it would work even while at really low charge so I'm really confused. I would have thought a bug like this would have been noticed by now which is why I thought I must have just been being stupid, but I'm positive it is a bug. Also I did remap the keys if that has anything to do with it.

I think I'm missing something with OpenGL. I'm trying to generate the view matrix for an orbit camera. My original code was

>vec3 position = normalize(vec3(cos(yaw), sin(pitch), sin(yaw))) * distance;
>vec3 right = cross(position, {0.0, 1.0, 0.0});
>vec3 up = cross(position, right);
>return glm::lookAt(position, {0.0,0.0,0.0}, up);

However, the scene was upside down. By changing line two to
>vec3 right = cross({0.0, 1.0, 0.0}, position);
the scene flips the right way up. What happened? How do I know which order the arguments to the cross product should be?
>>

>>
>>176159532
Either way is fine, video playtests are extremely valuable to devs. Without commentary might actually be more useful since you are just playing instead of analyzing.
>>
>>176159532
Either is valuable for devs, to see a new player's thought process.

You need commentary for it to be entertaining for others.

I really enjoy giving feedback anyway, especially since this game is fun and I'm really interested in seeing it completed now. Also I just realised I didn't even comment on all that scoring stuff you said about, honestly I'm definitely not good enough at bullet hell games to care about score but all that seems really cool and I'm sure if I was into scoring I would love it, it's clear you're putting in a lot of thought into score stuff which is cool. As a small nitpick though maybe you could have the laser graze show up as a seperate number, simply because I like being able to see the amount if bullets I've grazed just for the fun of seeing how many bullets have come close to hitting me rather than score, and the laser gives a massively inflated number that means nothing to me. Obviously just a nitpick though as I doubt anyone else would care about that anyway. But anyway I'm going to bed now so don't expect any more replies, and good luck making your game, I'm going to start paying more attention to your progress and I hope it all turns out well.

The point of itch.io isn't necessarily to make money. Pay-what-you-want has many uses.

But you're absolutely right. You shouldn't put your game on itch.io if your goal is to make money. The entire website generates $50k total for every developer combined on a GOOD month. The whole site has only generated a bit over $500k total revenue across all developers since it started.

Hey guys, need a little bit of help with unity.
Right now I'm working on getting a basic inventory with only healing items. My inventory isn't dynamic so I'm using an array.

So I have a health pack item class with a health amount variable. I got it so that when I touch a health pack it gets added to the array.

Now how would I go about creating a visual component, just text, to show what items you have? Should I have a number of game objects in the canvas (same amount in the array of course) that I connect to the inventory array in the inspector?

Any input would be appreciated.

>>
>>176160304
I'm the dev and the comma was a mistake. Although the sentence then becomes incorrect if laid out in plain text, it's meant to stand as the break between lines in a poem. And it probably feels awkward because the text pauses on the first comma but not the second.

>how do those humble bundles even make money
Anyone who hasn't been living in a hole the past several years is aware that humble bundle's bundle system has switched from being full on "pay what you want and get everything" to "pay at least a dollar if you want Steam keys for the shittiest tier of items (most of which are only available on steam) and pay approximately seven dollars for the mid-tier shit", all of which can obviously amount to a substantial chunk of change for a game that's at the end of its retail cycle anyway (they never put new shit in bundles).

For a game like Fire Emblem, where the enemy team has no specific goal, and has no ability to make new units, then a simple ai for each unit is enough.
For a game like Advance Wars where the enemy team needs to know how to make new units, capture buildings, and attack the player's base, then the ai can become more complex.

I'm all for living frugally and simply. Just pointing out the qualitative difference between a patreon game and a normal game. The normal game has much higher variance, and if you're aiming for the CHANCE at massive wealth, you need to go for that. Patreon games can get you a lot too, but there is a difference in scale between the high end of Patreon, and the high end of real games on Steam.

Been trying to develop the decorations around the zone I'm making.
It's coming together a bit more, but there's still some empty space I'll probably want to put something in.
And, of course, the giant skyscraper that's supposed to be the centerpiece of the zone. Still not sure how I want to tackle that.

Are all of those art assets ripped from the existing games?
>>
I'm a bit surprised how short a time it took me to solve this bug. It had me pretty baffled. But I sat down and managed to work it out in roughly 45 minutes. It turned out that somehow the granularity of my movement was being set to 0, and when that happened, the X and Y coordinates of the sword were getting set to NaN. Thus, I simply made it so any time the movement granularity was 0, I set to 1. The reason I even have movement granularity is to do better checks for the collision detection, moving the sword only a bit at a time to ensure it doesn't magically pass over anything.

No? none of that stuff is from the games, it's just my attempt at emulating some of their texture styles. I don't think it looks much like the original, but it's what I got for now just to be servicable.
>>
>>176128412
>rebindable key UI is actually pretty hard to get right imo
it is
this is what I did:
>how do you cancel a keybind? if it's by pressing esc, how do you bind esc
currently I don't make that possible, but you can see the current key while in rebind acceptance mode, so if you don't want it changed you can just press the key it already is
>what happens when you bind two functions to a single key?
nothing, unless you try to bind opposing functions to the same key, namely left and right, up and down, or accept and cancel
>can you rebind menu navigation? how do you make sure you don't break the keybinds menu if you do? etc.
you can always press the Pause key to pause and unpause the game, and you can always use ^C to enter controls and ^Q to quit while in the pause menu (although come to think of it I need to fix that because now quitting asks you if you're sure and I don't have a dependable solution for that, I'll just make it ^Q a second time)

PROGRESS tonight as a direct result of DD14 feedback. Webm reflects all of the below:
-Added a prompt instructing you to press space to defeat the title screen boss.
-Added a shilling link to the dev tumblr to the main menu that opens a browser window to it when activated.
-Webm demonstrates increased enemy attack speed
-Replaced a significant number of enemy guardboxes with Whiffboxes, decreasing the effectiveness of blindly alternating punches due to the whiffboxes causing you to be stuck in hitstun for longer.

I'm going to update the build itch.io shortly with those changes and the following new ones I'm testing:

-Hitting an enemy guardbox or whiffbox now subtracts a small amount of power from your super meter
-Activating either super now drains a small amount of meter. Should you connect with it you'll be refunded, but if you miss you'll have to build up a good chunk of the meter again.

Thanks. I've been greatly focused on all the mechanics behind melee attacks, so creating slick animations is a breeze. I've also been playing a large amount of DMC3 and looking at exactly how they did attack timing and differing inputs. The animations are largely test animations, but I was trying to push the animation system to its limits.

The game's first artist didn't want to be associated with a porn game. They've since had to stop working on sprites for the game because of irl issues.

I, on the other hand, have no problem with porn games, and I'm pretty sure the people I'm scoping out to partner with to do the art for this point onwards don't have any problems with it either. If it does end up becoming a porn game, it'll probably either be clothing damage based or it'll just be a punch-snout game where you unlock images in a lewd gallery for performing well.

I mean, how far do you think a Nintendo executive would go to take down a fangame from 4chan?

Like, Peach's Untold Tale has it's own site and was on ULMF for years and they never got anything coming after them.
I'm doing way less exposure-wise, so I'm pretty sure I'll be relatively safe.

I would consider it bad manners to the add the same game to a Demo Day twice
>>
>>176185138
You can't have it both ways.

RPGmaker has Ruby.

Have you searched the unity asset store for RPG frameworks? It's a pretty common problem, so there are going to be a lot of assets for it. But whatever you choose you'll need to rework part of it.
>>
>>176183058
>but I don't want to use RPG maker
Why not?
You do understand that RPGMaker is just a Ruby library with an optional GUI, right?
>>
>>176185783
All I want is a RPG system not written in Javascript or Ruby. I searched the Unity asset store, but I only saw one real serious contender and it's pretty pricey for something I won't even know if it's decent.
>>
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but are certain airplanes copyright?

Games like Ace Combat or whatever always have Lockheed Martin and Boeing and all these other plane companies listed in the credits. Is it because you need to pay them royalties or whatever to have a F-22 in your game?

Will I get sued by Trump if I make a plane game?
>>
>>176185867
Both RPG maker and Ruby are horrible, and Javascript is also horrible. The only thing that makes me hesitate to just make this in C++ with OpenGL is it's a side project, and I don't want to worry about that kind of stuff, but then again there is also MonoGame and Unity, but if I can avoid having to make it all myself with something good I will. It doesn't appear that anything exist though.
>>

The rpg market is:

> Kids and amateurs who just want an engine
RPGmaker
> Hobbyist enginedevs
Make an engine in a decent language then drop the project. They might share the engine but no guarantee it's useful for you
> Professional devs
Make a professional quality engine but don't share it

What you want is a professionally quality engine, in a good language, for free.

>>176186258
Yes, just be careful. Shit like Y-23 are still jet's that exist and you can't use. There is also the Muv Luv style route where all the names where the same but they were giant robots and not jets.

>>176186315
There are hundreds of such projects that exist for other things that are not RPG's, so the desire isn't some "out there" proposition, especially because of the simplicity of what I desire. It appears as though because it doesn't exist however I will just have to make my own version, so the only question is do I use MonoGame or SDL.
>>
>>176186574
Neither game got finished. Both times the artists made art competently and quickly.

First time, the collab collapsed after like 3 months. That was actually just before the meme started. I think the artist literally posted "artist looking for a coder" and a discord handle.

Second time was intentionally jam scope, so while the game wasn't finished, it was never really meant to be.

I've googled "C# rpg engine" and "c++ rpg engine", both are getting some github pages. Your problem is that many of these are unfinished, unpolished, abandoned, not quite what you need, or weirdly licensed. With a bit of work you could adapt one, I'm sure. But what you really want is a ready made engine developed by professionals, and RPGmaker is that.

Also look to see if any finished rpgs open sourced their engine after release.

>The sign of a bad game is visibly showing controls as the "tutorial".
I've played and enjoyed more games than I could ever possibly count that had visible controls as the tutorial, or at the very least included in the tutorial (which could easily be the case here). You're on some extremely pretentious "this is the gospel of design from which thou shalt not deviate" shit.

You give too much of a fuck about too trivial a thing. A text tutorial isn't enough to make or break a game and you if you think design is that inflexible then you're a terrible judge of quality because your ability to appraise a game is blinded by such a small detail.
