>What the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Braid, Limbo, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, Burrito Galaxy, Gone Home, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles. Absorbed the /lite/ general some time ago.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in /vg/), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indie and miscellaneous games, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone, except namefags. And be sure to make a new thread if nobody else does.

Yes.

I dunno, I don't use Linux, maybe try googling the error or something and seeing if it's a generic error that has a fix or something
>>
>>176007817
Turns out it's an error with wine rather than the game. Oh well, the mac port seemed fragile anyway, I shouldn't have fucked with it. Guess I'll just have to replay it on PC.Hopefully the room isn't that last part of the game because I had almost solved that shit before it crashed.

99% of the difficulty in this game comes from ammo management

Mostly because fuck ups with ammo resource not easily noticeable and you can keep playing while your run is actually ruined

If you were to come across an indie game you never heard of before and probably play, where would you have found it and not get mad about "shilling"?
>>
>>176082963
shilling does happen but people can just talk about a game they like

there was some 'rogue-lite' game that went free for a weekend a month or two ago, and i kind of felt bad posting about it because despite it looking like shovelware garbage it was actually pretty fun
>>
>>176082963
Shilling means getting paid to post positive for or negative coverage against.
>>
> http://store.steampowered.com/app/366870/Narcosis/
>Narcosis
anyone else got a ripoff of Soma feeling about this game
but it does actually pretty interesting, expanding on the concept actually drowning (which didn't happen in soma)
>>
>>176082963
No one cares about that here, just talk about your indie vidya.
We'll end up dying without it.
>>
>>176082963
Some devs, non regulars, advertised their game here and no one minds. Thread is too slow that shilling would be too obvious
>>
>>176085235
Drowning would be a preferable fate in Soma. The timing of the release seems that the devs saw Soma and made a knock off in Unity, but this game looks more sea life focused than Soma.
>>
>>176087423
yeah, it looks like they got that sea bottom horro vibe and went with it
which to be honest you didn't that much in Soma (though I love it with all my heart) it wasn't that scary
this game though seems to focus on the fear of suffocation and also using VR from what it seems
I really like to try it later, love the terror troupe and undersea really makes a feel for it
I wonder if we will get famous youtubers doing this
>>
Here's my hot take on shilling:

Let's say hypothetically someone was paid to make a post on this thread about X Game. So what? If I look up X Game and like what I see then I'm glad I was informed of it, paid shill or no. If I look it up and think it looks like trash then I move on with my life. It's not like shill coming into this threads and posting their X Games would magically hypnotize everyone into buying it. We're intelligent creatures here. We can recognize whether or not we would like a game.

Soma wasnt scary in the normal sense but the nature of the MC and the ending really makes you think. It'd be a more horrifying concept if that tech was real.

Distorted Travesty (it's a series, this is the third and best, you can/should start with it) is an indie platformer that's very challenging and well designed. But, the vast majority of its art assets are taken from other games. The gameplay is changed to suit DT's style but the art remains the same. It's a really good game, would maybe not famous but very likely popular if it had its own art assets I think. There's some stigma to playing games with ripped art assets, like the game would be cheap or something, which no doubt puts people off Distorted Travesty (3) despite it being so good.

Judging by reviews/gameplay videos, Immortal Redneck is just Rogue Legacy but in a form of FPS with a weak combat
>>
>>176205010
Combat seemed okay from reviews, except that enemies are bullet sponges and you have to grind many lives to build up damage output to kill them.
Also there's random debufts that gimp a run so much you have to just kill yourself as there's no point in still playing.
>>
>>176205190
So it's kinda like Tower of Guns where a good buff can make your run into a breeze?

>explained in manual that it's filled with old masters that can no longer fight, and that people who visit it learn of humility, sense of sacrifice, honor and duty, and that the peasants sometimes come to watch them in action

>Lotus' training building is an abomination
>where peasants go through intensively painful rituals and, based upon their reaction, are redirected toward differents jobs

>Serpent's building is a tavern
>people are just dropped there until they know how to fight

>Wolf's building is a fighting pit
>same than with the serpent, peasants are just dropped here until they can break rocks with their bare hands
>>
>>176213384
I always felt that there could be more to Battle Realms' training system. For example :
>ally training
>you can send your units to your ally's buildings to teach them one unique trait (sacrifice from Dragon, poison from Serpent, regeneration from Wolf, stamina steal from Lotus)

>peasant trade
>you can send several peasants to a single building at once to get only one unit, kinda like the master warlock

What are your big problems with it

>>176189967
quof, is that you?
>>
>>176240314
First off the writing is pretty bland. The characters don't really any arcs and their personalities are one-dimensional if they have one at all. The jokes are pretty meh too. The game reads like an early 2000s webcomic. While individual locations usually feel like places, the game takes place over a few planets and I never got the feel that I was exploring a galaxy, which might not be the intentions of the developer, but when I'm going from planet to planet to planet, it just feels like I'm exploring different cities.

The storytelling is hurt further because the cutscenes are often not directed well and there's a lack of sound effects in the cutscenes. It's like there was never a function to play sound effects in cutscenes so when someone gets punched or someone powers up in a bright aura, it's silent except for the music. Very awkward.

The profile art for the characters has this really bland amateurish style. It's got that realistic-but-slightly-anime look to it that's not good. I got over it eventually.

>>176225493
I mean, he's not really cheating. He used cheat engine to correct a mistake he made when spending attribute points.

Now he's trying to get rid of a feat he shouldn't have since he no longer meets the requirements. At this it's the opposite of cheating, he's trying to play by the rules.

All of this could be avoided if he saved more often in multiple slots. This is standard practice in RPGs, why do people insist on not doing it?
>>
>>176247840
I'm guessing that he's going to use this game as a stepping stone into 3D, so I think it looks pretty bad.

>>
>>176254692
The story is mostly background noise, that's why it's okay to skip 1 and 2 and go straight to 3 for the best gameplay. The game's strength is without a doubt it's very solid level design, gameplay, etc.

In the first place, the story is themed around gamers being sucked into game worlds (more or less), so it's not jarring or anything. They poke fun, like when they get to Dracula in the Castlevania section the male MC goads him into quoting his famous SOTN lines and then laughs at him. But again, gameplay is the reason to play DT3.

>>176256027
1. Do not make the scare-factor the front-and-center focus.
2. Change the plot so the MC is a nobody who enters Bendy's cartoon world through some Ink Door or something
3. The projector in the main office plays various sketches on a loop, 1 per "day" in the Cartoon world and between them, the MC can chat with the denizens of this world, focus is on cartooney death and destruction ala Happy Tree Friends, everyone wakes up fine the next day, and character-building.
4. Story progress is made in both the cartoon world and studio, either by exploring this inky kingdom or learning about secrets from the ink denizens about the studio that reveal new parts of it to explore, yielding more sketches and stuff.
5. The whole world takes a 180 spin when you find and set up a specific sketch with the projector in which suddenly all your friends are trying to tear you apart, the door is sealed, and you gotta rebuild it by finding ways to murder your old friends using their world without getting killed yourself and using their ink to repaint the door into existence and escape.
This last part is also crucial to work heavily on AI and give each character unique mechanics so it's not just 7+ flavors of "run from monster, find key item, kill monster."

Honestly, the plot is so much worse than FNAF I'm amazed there is a fandom. But the character of Bendy and the idea of a haunted 1930's cartoon is really appealing to me from a design standpoint. I just hate the squandered potential here.

It has only sold like 12k copies, so it's not very successful when compared to other small indie RPGs like Underrail or Age of Decadence.

>>
>>176280843
Care to elaborate? Reading about it right now and supposedly it's grindy, linear and pretty rough around the edges.

I'm sceptical when it comes to indie RPGs. Underrail is outstanding in all aspects and a true gem, Age of Decadence has extremaly good C&C and pretty good combat, but other than that I don't know any other good indie RPGs.

Serpent in the Staglands was a buggy mess with combat so bad it rivals real-time Arcanum for the title of the worst combat in an RPG ever.

12k copy is great for 2 guys! Thea also aimed for that much but ended up selling 50k in a year. The license of Unity, assets, the music / art for the base plus the entire cost of the Giants DLC were only £15k. Just selling their own framework covered half of the costs...

>>176283175
To be fair, AoD and UR are the very top of indie RPGs. (Side-note: if you liked AoD, take a look at it's action-based offspring, Dungeon Rats.) Balrum looks like a Minecraft x Stardew Valley x (random throwback RPG) combo, obviously for a specific target audience.
>>
>>176283965
>Balrum looks like a Minecraft x Stardew Valley x (random throwback RPG) combo
It's only one of those. Honestly it's just a vanilla oldschool RPG with poorly tacked-on house building thing. Farming and housebuilding is pointless but at least your house zone can function as inventory extension and teleport hub.

As an RPG it has decent turn-based combat. Leveling is extremely slow and overall the game is quite slow-paced and long.
>>
>>176284409
Well, that's a bit disappointing.
I hoped it would be some kind of mix between Rimworld, Battle Realms, and Mount and Blade where you buy a handful of slaves, make them work in the field, make them scavenge loot from dead bandit, melt it into better stuff and equip them until you have an army of knights.

>>176286710

>>
>>176298503
Well it depends.

I'm guessing a high AGI sniper with stealth would be the best for that. Sneaking by enemies with AGI and Interloper is by far the fastest way to deal with enemies you don't need to kill.

In those rare cases where you absolutely need to kill something to progress the story, one Aimed Shot/Snipe from a sniper rifle would be most likely the fastest as well. I guess psionic mania + telekinetic punch would work as well.

Choosing JKK would probably be the best choice since you wouldn't need to engage in a lengthy battle in the warehouse.

Leveling would be an issue since you need to get your offensive skills high enough to hit with sniper rifles. No idea what level would you reach just by doing the main questline and picking whatever oddities are on the way.

I'm also not sure if you will be capable of one-shoting Tchort while being under leveled. You won't be able to craft a top tier sniper rifle with top tier smart module and smart goggles, your telekinetic punch might be too weak. Black Arrow Snipe with found/bought smart goggles might be enough but I dunno.

Other than that you probably wouldn't even need to craft that much - psi doesn't need to craft that much overall, maybe a psi vest at best.

For snipers, Dragunov is conveniently placed near where the main questline takes you and should carry you through the whole game up until the final boss. But at that point you can pick the Black Arrow. You definetly would need to wear black cloth gear in all slots, both for sneaking around and bonus damage to snipe. Night vision smart goggles would be a must as well. Tabis for bonus movement speed, too.

The point is long RPG speedruns suck balls.

For a genre that should naturally have one of the widest player agency, long speedruns are an unmistakable sign of excess linearity and bad design.

RPG speedruns should be closer to 99% faster than normal playthrough than 90%. If any% speedrun takes significantly longer than 10% of "normal" completionist run, the game is probably overly linear garbage.

This is part of the reason the original Fallouts are widely regarded as the best RPGs ever. True nonlinearity. It's possible to speedrun either in <15mins without exploiting any significant plot bugs.
>>
>>176315370
Same with Jagged Alliance 2.

Clustertruck is pretty great, plus I think streets of rogue is actually pretty decent. I probably wouldn't buy it normally but i'll definitely get the $15 bundle.

Compared to Dwarf Fortress, the main appeal of Rimworld that I saw is that you can directly interfere to order your pawn to do something rather than waiting for them to do it themselves. To that regard, it borrows a bit from the Sims.

The game puts a lot of emphasis on the temperature and the gear, but you play a really smal colony. So far, I never passed 5 people in my settlement.
But if you don't know much about Rimworld, let me make this clear : you do NOT mine. The whole game takes place on the same Z layer. You can't go underground (yet) like you can in Dwarf Fortress, so quickly abandon your idea of living underground. In Rimworld, you live under the sky.

Because I didn't knew that wasn't an option. I was trying to recreate perfect cavern I had in one of my games (huge open cavern, big underground lake pierced by big stone pillars, with some regular flat terrain on one side). Made a gatehouse and farms on the flat terrain, but most of the fort life was withing the pillars and the catwalks connecting them. Had cool stuff like like a catwalk hospital suspended over the lake.

Since I couldn't recreate it, I just gave up.

>Anything similar to artifacts
So far, sarcophagus and sculptures can be decorated. You can't engrave walls, and even a legendary table is just a table.
I don't know if carpets can have art.
>cool shit that can invade your colony
Animals can go wild and attack you (that includes kamikazes lizard that explode when they die, sometimes setting the forest and your building on fire), you can have pirates, slavers and raiders attacking you. And you can also attack caravans and turn cannibal.
>site features
So far, not really. I mean, there are different biomes (nord means more pine and less cultures, south means it get hot quicker but you can grow stuff all yeard round), but you can't settle on ruins or stuff like that.

A point that may interest you is that you research new building and props. That includes electricity, smelters, and firearms.
You don't have to bother with ammos, though. It's automatic. And also, you can't train your settlers, they only get skill by experience.

And also, you have a goal : either you make a caravan to reach a ship (on the other side of the planet), or you build one to win the game.

You can also have a bunch of your colonist leaving your actual colony to go settle somewhere else. I haven't tried that yet.

My complains so far is that the game is slow (but that's a given), pretty frustrating (boy I sure love when my level 6 craftswoman only make awful stuff, wasting valuable ressources), and very early (0.16 so far).

Oh, and for extra fun, you don't pick your three starting colonist. You just roll until you get one that you like.
In my last run, I had two pyromaniacs. Guess how it went.
In my current ironman run, everyone can fight, but nobody can cook. They're puking all over the place.

One point about RW vs DF that hasn't been made yet.
The scale of everything is embarassingly small in RW if you're used to DF. It's less than 10% of DF in most aspects (number of items/colonists/etc), in some cases (map size) less than 1%.

>>176323259
>Compared to Dwarf Fortress, the main appeal of Rimworld that I saw is that you can directly interfere to order your pawn to do something rather than waiting for them to do it themselves. To that regard, it borrows a bit from the Sims.

Where in that post do you read genre's are subjective? The definition of the RPG genre is much more well defined than genre's /indie/ gets autismal over, such as roguelike.

Please tell me how
>>176319834
>jrpgs are generally better than wrpgs
at all adresses a single thing in that post. Does it argue that these games have wild player agency? No, it's bait to start a JRPG WRPG war by claiming one is better than the other.

This post >>176319663 clearly states how JRPGs and WRPGs are attempting to do different things. Nowhere does it say one is worse than the other, simply that they can't be compared. The original posts were comparing RPG speedruns in the context of Underrail by using JRPG run times as examples.
If anything the previous post was saying that those JRPGs were bad because their run time was a sign of linearity. Go ahead and reply to that post about why JRPGs are better.
>>
>>176324483
>The definition of the RPG genre is much more well defined than genre's /indie/ gets autismal over, such as roguelike.
RPG is actually the worst defined genre in existence. At least roguelikes have a few defining traits like perma death and random generation.

Don't assume I disagree with that claim. A lot of W"""RPGs""" do not offer the player agency a game like Underrail does, and even the ones that do aren't necessarily a better game than a linear western or japanese game, or even any good at all.
The claim is bait at worst and at best just a non sequitur.

There's nothing wrong with stating your opinion, but reply to someone else or make it a standalone post. Your post makes no sense as part of a conversation the way you wrote it.
>>
>>176325776
HOW?
The majority play with Therapist and most of them just whine endlessly on the forums until there is a working version, because nobody wants to use the godawful vanilla system for enabling/disabling jobs.
>>
>>176313556
>That's not helping me.
It has probably the biggest amount of choices, consequences and branching paths out of all RPGs ever created to this day, including palythorughs with no combat whatsoever.

Combat is pretty good, think Fallout 1/2 but with much more options, more difficult and with limited resources. All weapons work differently.

For example spears have more reach that other melee weapons and each time anyone tries to get next to you, there is a chance you will push them back.

Ton of replayability but each individual playthrough is going to be rather short. I like to say the game is wide rather than long, it has tons of content, but you won't be able to see most of it in each given run.

Skill points are REALLY limited and you have to specialize. In general it's best to either dedicate yourself entirely to combat or talking, once you finish the game a few times it's possible to make hybrids that can do both to a degree.
>>
>>176326552
I was talking about Rimworld, seeing as you're rushing to play DF again.

Underrail main questline is pretty linear.

Hell, VtMB is linear as fuck yet it's considered one of the best RPGs ever made.

As other Anon said linearity is not inherently a bad thing, not even in RPGs. Too much of it is a bad thing. It just needs to be minimal.

Dunno about Strafe, but I kinda gave up on the idea of getting a good roguelite FPS from indie devs, unless we get some really devoted and skilled guys and not just people who are trying to cash in on a trend
It's "X meets Y" is not enough, core FPS should be good, procedural generation should be good

P.S. Oh wow, the reviews for Strafe are actually in, hahaha, what a shitshow

Just replayed Lisa TP for the fifth time. Was I supposed to side with Brad to the end? At first it seemed like Buddy was in the right when she runs away but she defends Marty and tries to stop Brad from killing him. Marty is unredeemable and deserved death and Brad being able to make that call assured me that he knew what he was doing.

Not as bad as the forced punjabi dudebro in Subnautica

Buddy knew about literally none of the horrendous things Marty did so she didn't understand why Brad did what he did. But at the same time Brad did a lot of shit wrong, too.

A once prosperous civilization, brought to rubble and ruin. Famine and drought plague the nation, hundreds die by the day. Lacking sufficient graves, corpses flood the streets and the unburied dead twice-over outnumber the living. Thousands of homes lay empty and stagnant, as nature wipes clean the marks left by man. May the souls still tortured by the burdens of their flesh find salvation in the next life.

He did literally nothing wrong, maybe except burning the orphans bu that was an accident.

>b-but he didn't let Buddy have any freedom!
She's the last woman living in a fucking post-apocalyptic world, she absolutely shouldn't be allowed to wander around, too dangerous. It was for her own good.

It's like saying you're a shit parent if you don't let your kids play in the traffic. Come on now.

>b-but he didn't let her make her own decisions!
She's a fucking kid. She's not ready to make her own decisions and Brad is responsible for her until she grows up.

Am I a shit parent if I refuse to let a kid drive a car? Give me a fucking break.

fuck, i hate how i need 6 strenght for this feat, if i could redirect those points to other skills i could manage to bump my will or raise my con enough to make hard mode less of a chore.
>>
>>176471153
I fee like Steadfast Aim was specifically meant to be used on chars wearig Riot Gear with Shield, since they also require 4-6 STR to use and are limited to pistols, knives and unarmed.

The problem is riot gear sucks balls (with the exception of CAU armor, but that one doesn't have a shield and is good despite being riot gear, not because of it). So it's really hard to justify those 3 points in STR just for feat alone.

I also feel it was meant to be used with either plasma or .44 hammerer pistols since their high base AP cost and high base/critical damage get the most out of this feat.
>>
>>176471153
It's weird how pistol builds need more attributes than anything else.
>>
>>176472472
"pistol build" is a really broad term. There are a lot of different ways to play with pistols (chemical, plasma, electroshock, crit-based hammerer, non-crit neo luger, secondary for snipers, etc.) possibly more than with any other weapon type.

>>
>>176474978
Yes, but it gives you a really good feel for the layout of DC. Which sections are in the same cavern, how they were connected, travel routes, security measures, etc. It's not perfect since the scale doesn't always match up, but it's the best we can do unless the devs give use some drawn map with the corrects scales and off-screen tunnel lentghts.

Are there really people who actually struggle with navigating Deep Caverns?

I can understand getting lost in the Labyrinth since that's kin of the point of it, but by the end of my 1st playthrough I had the entire DC pretty much memorized.

On the other hand I still get lost in the lower Underrail and caves from time to time just because of the sheer size of them. Someone needs to make an updated map.

>>176477143
It's not really about getting lost. That map was first posted (although probably not created) during a kind of autistic "lore" discussion about Deep Caverns that started when someone asked how is it possible for Caerus to have a lake with fish. Then we talked about motorways and vehicles, the potential location of Tartarus, and shit like that. And for that a map like this was godsend.

'twas a good night.

>There's a simply trick to get out of any labyrinth
Yeah, it's called drawing your own map.

Gotta collect all the wax cells and Hathor's helmet.
>>
>>176478168
Don't forget your compass! Gotta know which way north is.
>>
>>176478234
Didn't Styg add it solely because some people were confused about how isometric (or dimetric, or maybe even cavalier oblique like in Fallout, never actually checked which Underrail uses) projection works?
>>
>>176478234
>>176479163
I was mildly annoyed when I realized it would only ever point in one direction.

Would have been funny if there was one mini-quest where your sense of direction gets fucked and the compass would actually be useful. Or not, but, jeez.
>>
>>176479163
Something like that. I think I've read that the Labyrinth was originally meant to fuck with direction and make the compass useful, but I don't even remember where I've read that or if it was ever true at all.
>>
>>176479529
On the bright side, before highlights were added it was often really hard to see where your character was. The compass helped with that by putting a fuckhuge red arrow over your head.
