That just means you have more opportunities to improve for the next demo day. Solidify those mechanics, polish those controls, add in that juice and your game will be amazing.

How many people actually show up for Demo Day to play the games?

Is there actually a good amount or is it usually just /agdg/ faggots?

I got about 20 downloads so far, which is funny since it's less than the amount of games submitted.

>>
>tfw debug printouts just make the bug more bizarre
Should I give up and start over, or keep trying?
>>
>>176000517
GM:S? This is legit. It is something about the way they have the whole thing setup. Deleting certain resources that are still being referenced by something can make it disregard a ton of code that has nothing to do with the resource in question (even after clearing cache) and for some reason cutting and pasting the code unaltered right back where it already was fixes it.
>>
>>176000878
And right as I write that I find out the problem: I had two copies of my Player script put on my Player, so of course it triggered twice. How dumb.

Have a room or space to move around in, preferably one thing to do (even if that one thing is just swinging/using a weapon on nothing, talking to NPCs, picking stuff up, whatever) and have posted progress leading up to the demo. Some people like to show up one or two days before demo day to post once or twice to justify it, then they post demo and disappear again until the day or so before the next demo day. Some don't even bother doing that much and then act surprised/offended when they get who'd on.

Warning: Idea guy stuff ahead

The current plan is to have 2 talent trees per role. The first talent tree would be the same between playthroughs no matter what to keep some level of consistency and provide core choices. The second talent tree would be balls to the wall random and make it a shit fest where weird shit can happen.

Here are some talents that I see being universally applicable to any/most abilities, then on top of this, there would be more specific talents to modify abilities that you may also randomly get. The idea being to mix up playthroughs to be more interesting
Modifiers are...
>Fearsome: Ability generates a significant amount of threat on targets.
>Suppression: Ability generated no threat.
>Bloodthirsty: Resets when an enemy dies with X yards.
>Flowing: ACTIONs lower the cooldown of the ability by X seconds.
>Swiftness: Ability gives you X% movement for Y seconds stacking Z times.
>Well Versed: Ability’s cooldown is reduced by X%.
>Revitalizing: Ability also restores X health.
>Suddenness: Ability is off the global cooldown.
>Far Reach: Ability’s range is increased by X yards.
>Rapidness: Ability has X charges. (Probably 3, might vary depending on ability)
>Frenzy: Ability increases your attack/casting speed by X% for Y seconds stacking Z times.
>Opportunity: Ability deals X% more damage to targets that are immobilized. (Slow, stuns, roots, crowd control)
>Sundering: Ability makes enemies weaker to physical/magic damage X% for Y seconds stacking Z times.
>Deadly: Ability does X% more damage.
>Heavenly: Ability heals for X% more.
names yet to be finalized.

My goal is to come up with a combat system closer to the Vanilla - early WotLK era in terms of play style.

In the meantime, I'm writing the actual algorithms to generate dungeons, code to build them in 3D, and the controllers needed to move characters around the world.

Here's an updated pic of my algorithm. Currently modifying it to be more controlable

Put it on the Unity asset store for 20$ and you'll be all set.

This is what they call crunch in the ol' industry, and apparently it happens a ton
>>
>>176008150
>and apparently it happens a ton
Maybe in video game industries, but my company actually makes a point not to thank people for working beyond their hours and to stop people from doing it.
It might have short term results, but long term effects on happiness and employee longevity are serious consequences. And money can only do so much for people with lots of career choices.

I do software in a rather large company with 150-300 developers, maybe more since they are always hiring
>>
>>176008290
I meant the game industry yeah, especially indies

Most sane compnaies (like yours thankfully) discourage crunch because it literally takes years off your health

You're pretty lucky it seems
>>
>>176007073
I wish I did, but I don't.
>>
>>176008446
>You're pretty lucky it seems
Extremely. Pure chance that my public school was the only public school they recruited from. Skipped the entire painful interview process that I've learned about and get bank.

Videogames are something you can do for a living only if you enjoy the processes involved in making games.
Truth be told, I enjoy the process of making a game more than I enjoy games. Makes it a decent hobby, though I realize I could make way more spare cash with some other type of hobby. I've made like $2600 over 10-11 months from unity assets thou.

One of the things I've started doing is building smaller parts to my game, and if I think that others could use it, trying to sell it. Realistically, the only thing I've been able to sell is a camera controller. My event system and anti cheat libraries don't sell. But they're more niche products. I should make a character controller...
>>
>>176008290
>>176008446
I'm not in the game industry, but I am in the movie industry so there are some similarities and let me tell you, I've had to work until 9pm 6-7 days a week for a month. It really does a number to you.
>>
>>176008821
Yeah, making something that everyone wants and wants now is the key. The guy who figured out working portals is raking it in

I'm jealous, you're situation sounds awesome. What does your company do exacly?
>>
>>176008828
It's a matter of compensation.
If you're doing that without the pay to justify it, or the opportunity/connections to get way more, then you need to move on.
Look for new jobs while you work. My guess is if you're in the movie industry, then you're in an area where it may be hard to get other work.
Good luck anon. Don't waste your best years suffering if there's nothing to be rewarded, and don't lie to yourself about what you will get.
If you honest to god are going to get something for what you're doing, you'll know it to be so true you won't question it. If there's a shred of doubt, then you're being used.
>>
i finished retopologizing my horse today.
>>
>>176008919
>What does your company do exacly?
Sorry, but for anon reasons I want to keep that info to a minimum. It's enough to know I work with software for my job, so I have a wide berth of knowledge to pull on about all sorts of things.

Before I would have been afraid to make a multiplayer game, now I know I could easily build a system that could scale for demand if I had too much demand.

Thanks for the kind words, but I'm totally happy where I am for now. Having to do crazy hours like that doesn't happen too often, and it's all paid for. I just wanted to weigh in to give an idea of what it might be like in the games industry.
>>
>>176009153
I went to one of the largest state schools in my state (since I said public) and the recruitment was pretty legit. They had an science and engineering fair which was pretty much 95% CS and 5% engineering (or 1-3 booths). I submitted resumes to 13 people and wrote thank you letters to everyone I talked to and cover letters that were slightly tailored to who I was talking to. I got responses from maybe 4 people and interviewed with 2 and got offers for internships with both at 25$ and 30$. I picked the 30$ an hour internship and it acted as a long interview for a intro position at the company paying roughly 6 figures.

I grew up pretty poor and struck for money, so every day feels like I've gotten ahold of something I shouldn't have.

Apply for a ton of jobs, study what your resume should look like (shouldn't be too hard since they except college students to be pretty similar, just don't have grammar/spelling issues and follow standard conventions), get business cards if you can to email thank yous, but don't force it since some spergs don't wanna give you anything. I've noticed more success from jobs at career fairs that don't want you do just apply online and will take your resume there.

I enjoy programming. Maybe I don't enjoy working all the time, but I do enjoy coding, so it's not the worst. Plus work is a lot of other stuff like meetings, aligning on objectives, setting up stuff, and discussing, so there are breaks. Rarely do I feel burned out from pure programming, and if I do, it's a good time.

As an engineer I don't know what the jobs are related to that. Probably a bit harder since everyone knows that CS is a huge field. Just remember to do something you enjoy as part of what you do. I like programming and get to do fun things sometimes that I come up with, and it's nice to hear people say what I've specifically done has had a solid positive impact. As I said, I don't program all the time, but be sure to have a job where you do something you enjoy some of the time.

good luck, every hard working person is a positive to the world

>>
>>176009965
No, I still have a massive list of stuff to finish before anything is playable.
I honestly expect from history to drop this before I get anywhere near my goals, but I've had this idea before and got pretty far with it, so I already have a prototype.
Things to do
>improve dungeon gen algorithm so I have a bit more control
>Actually create rooms for the algorithm to use and generate a 3d dungeon from it
>add in variable components to the rooms that are generated.
>add overall dungeon objectives to the dungeon generation
>create a character controller
>start work on basic AI
>create a buff/debuff/status effect combat system
>ui work for what I want
>content work
>replace placeholders with legit stuff

In the past my prototype had an extremely basic character controller and AI without abilities. Not data driven in any way. Lost all of that on my laptop when the harddrive died.

I backup everything on GitLab now for free

Posting a second and final time if anyone's interested.

Any amateur voice actors around?

I don't make games, but I do make reviews.
I'm creating a review of This War of Mine, a indie war management sim from civilian's perspective.

I'm looking for a couple paragraphs read in various accents done by one or several people. The main one I need is an eastern European accent, but I need others as well.
They all need to be in a dour down-and-out intonation.

Here's what I need read,
https://pastebin.com/K8hYAUSi

Here's my reviews if curious.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsRWyiUnZCM_430gqrQ6F5Q

Will give credit at the end of the video and link your portfolio, game, youtube, etc. in the description. Also if there's anywhere else you guys would recommend I try, it'd be appreciated.
>>
>>176010653
yeah it's going to be for my game. i'm practicing modelling/texturing/animating, the whole thing
>>
>>176010748
What video are you uploading?
My 20-30 minute videos at 1080p typically don't take that long, but most of the image is static, and I use OBS to record it.

>>176010838
Cool, what kind of game?

>>176010754
Probably gonna have trouble getting solid quality since voice recording is actually an expensive setup to do right. I might try saying on of them, but if it's shit, don't expect me to respond with it.
>>
>>176011056
Anyone with a blue yeti or equivalent would be fine. I use an AT2020 that's about $100 and it's beautiful.

Not looking for professional quality thankfully, just some audio clips I'll insert as transitions. A friend of mine already did one.

So I've been fiddling around with my physics-based sailing idea. Unfortunately, I only know a little bit about sailing and not much about physics.
Having the strength and direction of the wind and the direction the sail is facing, what maths do I need to do to get the force generated so that the configurations in the diagram are the most optimal way to align the sail? I'd been trying to do it just by adding the sail vector to the wind vector, normalising it and multiplying by wind speed, but thats totally wrong.

>GunMetal
So I played this when I had version: GunMetal_Build_0-78-1209_WIN
Back then I thought the feedback loop was a bit dull on taking damage, and dealing damage felt odd. I'll try out the new version and see what I think

>GunMetal_1-65-0505_WIN
First impression, menu is infinitely better (not sure if there was a menu in the old one)
The options menu was confusing to get out of. I didn't realize for a few seconds I had to hit the COG again. I would have a back button to get out that also does the same thing on the left side, or change the cog to a back button so people know it backs you out.
The default sensitivity feels low, not a big deal, but noticeable. 200 (max) feels better, but I could go higher.
Great transition screens and menu music, I love it. The weapons may be zoomed in a bit too much on the menu. Having them back may feel less claustrophobic and feel more minimalist, since it' sort of going for that with only the weapons floating around.
The targeting reticles on enemies suck. They cover the book enemies entirely so I can't see them.
The enemies make no sounds and no sounds as they spawn. No idea to tell where they are around me besides looking.
Shotgun feels like it's shooting paper confetti, and the damage appears to be as well.
Death animations are extremely lackluster. Books should fall to the ground or explode into scrap particles to show I really killed them.
The kick animation was solid, and the animations looked great.
Good improvements overall, seems like polish and content are the big things you'll end up needing.
>>
>>176011056
a shooting game on horseback, where enemies chase you and you have to kill them to survive.

>>176011631
bretty cool
What type of controls are you thinking?
I'm always a shooing for more VR games, or VR support.
If the game was half decent and let me use my Vive as a camera, I'd probably buy it. Not many games add in Vive camera support since people think VR needs to be the full experience
>>
>>176011289
Wanna give more context on the dialog? Though at this time of night, you likely won't get feedback, but providing context may let people rewrite what you have better, or act out a voice better. No idea what you're trying to get voice acted.
>>
at least mothdan is gone
>>
>>176011808
I'm doing a review for a game that's heavy on the "war sucks theme". I'm making a review that reflects that to some extent. For transitions in the review, I thought it'd be a neat idea to use audio clips of from the game's character bios. Unforuately, there's no voice acting in the game. So I thought I"d ask a couple people online to record their own for me.

A friend of mine did a great one here.
>>176011289
https://clyp.it/3jbkznii

tl;dr I'm looking for voice actors saying those paragraphs as the characters struggling to survive in a country embroiled in civil war. So the voice needs to be dour, a little hopeless, sad, generally.

I hope that makes sense.
>>
i NEED an idea
>>
>>176012276
Here's an idea:
Make one up yourself, you tool
>>
>>176012090
Yeah it does, but it may be beneficial to describe the characters who people are voicing a bit so they can get a feel of how they should voice them, or if they should mix up the bio for their lines. Honestly, some of the writing felt stale and I couldn't tell how the character was supposed to feel saying them.

If it's just a bio clip, then I guess it's fine if it's more neutral and less emotional
>>
>>176009445
Is there a chance you'll be sharing your papermario engine when it's done? or maybe do some tuts on it? I really want to make a game on it !!!
>>
>>176012090
>>176012338
Also, the context of the civil war.
Currently the only civil wars are in places like Syria which people can't relate to.

Are there other countries interfering? Is the civil war in the 'major country of the world'. Is it an isolated event that other people aren't messing with? Is it a global government, and the character is trying to protect their own little area, or maybe unite some areas, or conquer some areas? Is it total anarchy, or is it two well formatted sides like the american civil war?

Living in Syria as a refugee/combatant and being recruited by international terrorist orgs is a bit different than living in a wild west setting that others aren't sweeping in to affect, and is different from a post apocalyptic world setting.
>>
>>176012338
It really doesn't matter that much to get a feel of the voice. I just need different voices, one for each paragraph. Preferably a eastern-European/ex-soviet bloc accent and woman for two of them.

I also didn't write them, they're from the game.
>>
>>176011735
controls will be arrow keys haha. VR seems way over my head. i don't know anything about making a game with it. i'm trying to keep the programming part as simple as i can to start with since i don't know a lot about it. i've had more ambitious ideas, but then i learn things are more complicated than they seem at first, so i end up scaling them back.

I claimed it since I knew there was a digital trace that could be tracked, even if they aren't tracking it. I don't want that tracked in 5-10 years if it builds up and hit me with a compounding multithousand dollar fine, plus possible criminal charges.

Look up the cost of starting a business, go to reddit and check it out. If you only make back the cost, then you didn't lose out. Owning a business doesn't cost thousands a year just to exist, but it does cost a bit to file as a business.

If I ever release a game on steam, I plan to LLC at minimum as a precaution against trollsuits and just general use. It can't be too hard since someone I knew had a fake company they used to give fake work references to people in other countries.

don't worry about jams. Jam games never become full games. Just work on what you want and demo it as you like.

The worst thing is coming up with the ideas needed for a system. It's why I base my games on other games and work off of their systems in order to come up with the systems I need to build my own game.

I've never gotten to the point where content creation is my problem.

>Jinzo was a Space Jam game
there are probably more

>>176014793
Im aware of the costs and all, just thought you had experience with an llc already.

Its 150 bucks to get a registered agent to file an llc in deleware with only a 300 usd yearly filing fee. All gains made through your llc are passed directly to you in a sole member llc formed in Deleware. So you dont have to pay extra tax and can just file it as your personal income in your state.

Reddit had a lot of trash regarding this as far as i could tell. There are lots of threads or w/e about the topics in the dev areas but its almost all just one dude shilling his practice trying to sell people "$3500 startup packages". Garbage

FOR FUCKS SAKE I CAN'T SOLVE THIS SHITTY BUG.

For some unknown reason my changeHP() function can't be called from another object.

As you can see in the pic, collisionDetection() is running, the 1st sysout is printed, and the "hit" BUT why the fuck isn't the changeHP() function called? It should always print something.

Fucking hell im mad right now

Bottom line is, as it stands, I'd never play something that looks like this. Nor would many other people. It's not 2004 anymore; "indie" doesn't have to mean "looks like shit on purpose." Once again, hire an artist please.

I call it a Roguelike Tactical Space Management Role Playing Game.

It's a mash-up of genres, random story events and permadeath from roguelikes; real-time pausable tactical management like FTL or Homeworld; RPG elements like items, experience and linear story; sprawling passive skill tree like PoE; resource management like Starsector/RTS games and multiple abstracted levels of play like 4X games (Stellaris/Endless space).

The player controls a fleet of up to 7 fully customisable ships and jumps from system to system engaging in combat, exploration, problem solving and diplomacy. Players can collect items, improve their gear, customise their ships and create unique builds from over 500 passive skill nodes and hundreds of linkable abilities (like the PoE gem system). There are also story arcs and mysteries to solve.

It's not as ambitious as it sounds. At its core its just a 3D advanced version of FTL with more ships and systems that made PoE so addictive.

>>
>>176036564
Seriously, the bullying against topdown shooter games with rotating guns of this community is getting way out of hand, especially since we are some of the biggest contributors and most involved in this board.

Its not just "memes" or "banter", its vicious attacks and regardless of intentions it does demean people and hurt feelings. I can't say I'm the only sidescroller developer who finds it hard to take pride in his own game after having years of constant and needless attacks defaming my gameplay mechanics from insecure losers here. Why not bully Unity FPS devs or Godot users? Do they not have much more to be ashamed of than our peaceful game? Text adventure devs get bullied less than us.
Like when its not just banter, when a meme is repeated over and over again, repeated systematically, it eventually becomes a truth irregardless of the intentions in repeating it. And that isn't just jokes any more then, then its harmful!
Would you call a semi-procedurally generated sidescroller roguelike a "generic"(not true at all) at the demo day? Would you say to a kind, peaceful and hard working salt of the earth dev that they are "plagiarizing"? Would you say those words to your fellow game artist? Are you starting to feel ashamed now? You fucking degenerate?

You’re destroying gaming pride, you’re dividing game developers against each other, your doing the opposite of what you claim to support when you engage in this incredibly abhorrent behavior. So I encourage you to stop now.

Well yeah, what you say is true, but as the only one working on the game, I have to do a lot of things, so I gotta take some shortcuts in some places when I have to do more than 24 tilesets, and all the rest of the entire game.
The shadows are supposed to match the light source that I've picked to draw each of the enemies at, and I haven't really fine tuned all of the shadows yet since I got them working, so things aren't even in their final state yet.

There's no reason to seem this buttmad over some oversights anon, it's not like I did these things intentionally just to piss you off.

there is NOTHING wrong with rotating guns

what do you expect devs to do? it's a topdown 2D game, so they either have to animate 8 directions for each character AND gun, or just don't rotate the gun at all and have projectiles retardedly fire backwards and upwards out of the barrel

rotating it is the only option

Crouching letting you avoid all damage, even low punches, is intentional for now, as is side-dodges letting you avoid all damage. You're not invulnerable, your hitbox is just shifting to a location where this enemy doesn't have any ways of hitting you. When the game gets further along and faster enemies start appearing that have
-proper hooks that can catch you while you're dodging to specific sides
-tall uppercuts/short enemies/kicks that can hit you low while ducking
and
-guard-breaking strong blows start appearing
The player's defensive options will be less of a 'no drawback' thing. One of the things I'm already planning is to adjust the downwards dodge to be slower than the others and cause you to take more damage if struck during it, not that the enemy in the DD14 demo is capable of reaching that hitzone anyways.

It's important to note that the enemy in the DD14 demo is the glass-joe equivalent. He isn't supposed to present much of a challenge. He's there so you can learn the controls and feel good stomping the shit outta somebody that's not that good at boxing. I'm probably going to speed him up slightly and give him a couple more attacks, but he's not supposed to be somebody that will wreck your shit.

Twitter and Tumblr don't give you any presence at all, these sites are designed to be circlejerks where people only see what they want to see, no one will ever stumble upon your game randomly there.

That doesn't apply at all since reddit works very differently, there you subscribe to certain subreddits and everyone who is subscribed to it might see your game if it's upvoted enough (avoid the designated shilling subreddits since they are all dead).
It also helps that reddit is far more popular than the other sites.

Twitter and Tumblr are decent for blogging for the people who are already interested in your game, but not for acquiring new followers. Your own domain with an email newsletter would be better but that costs money.

I also think it's a bad idea to provide a constant stream of tiny changes you did for your game but that's another story.

I probably wouldn't be considered a lisp person, mainly because I think the runtimes of all the embedded lisps are super immature compared to the non-lisp competition

I've seen a bunch of aggy daggers do well doing 90% common lisp projects, and I guess you could do things like embed a js engine and use clojurescript if you have a high tolerance for overcomplicated build systems

I just use lua and write it in a lispy way

You get those webms on the frontpage of reddit by doing a shit ton of marketing everywhere else because you can't simply go into reddit, post a webm and get upvotes.

You gotta get someone popular, at the head of a circlejerk to post your webm because they're so hyped about your game they want to share it to their circlejerk. That is achieved through twitter, tumblr, youtube, articles and going to events to present your game.

The average dude doesn't really use twitter or tumblr to look for games but other gamedevs, journalists and youtubers do. Those are the people you're trying to reach.

You could do a balancing act of more pellets=slightly less damage per pellet each upgrade but also = more coverage/spread. Well, we're still in prototyping mode, but the general idea is this:

Ignore the parts that mention "villagers' this was originally going to be a "fan game" about Dungeon Crawl Classics but they kaiboshed that shit really fast.

So it's meant to be very fast paced.

This is very close to a prototype I never finished because I'm an idiot. So at least on a technical level it's doable
unresolved questions:
Can pikmin get hurt? without cstick targeting you don't have that much control over them
Can you leave pikmin behind? without disband/the whistle you don't have fine-grained control over team comp
How do you get more pikmin? the last few questions probably matter a lot less if the core loop doesn't leave the "fight the dudes" stages

i made up this game with a white board were i just made up shit and rolled a dice, my friends liked it, i was about 11. kinda like a really poor dnd.
>>
>>176053586
I used to create these pen&paper games on graph paper where you'd have to navigate an environment, get keys to unlock doors to other areas, and pick up weapons which were just like "gun" and "bomb" back when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade. There were crappy enemies and traps and each time you moved a square on the grid counted as a turn.
>>
>>176054126

Well, I'm not sure about Pikmin getting hurt yet. I want to do prototypes really hard first.
There wouldnt be fine-grain control. There's the two buttons that shift between types and not types.

do those different armors convey gameplay information? if so, your color scheme is backwards: the face (which is consistent) is bright and high contrast, while the actual information (which armor you have) is nearly invisible

of course im not going to tell you to change your aesthetic, but use the colors more wisely to convey your gameplay information

>>
>>176055189
The face is more important than the weapons/armor - it shows who the equipment belongs to. If you have 2 icons on the map in the middle, you'll know which one to look at for stat info faster as it's the exact same icon in both the portrait and the map.

ok I will expand on this

You should always be trying to break your game as much as possible when playtesting it, push keys like a madman all the time at inappropriate times, jump on awkward corners, try to do the most retarded combinations of decisions possible, etc.

If a casual player manages to break your game more often than you do then you aren't testing right.
>>
>>176055395
Would replacing armor with helmet work? It could be better than adding body that doesn't match the current style.
>>
>>176056328
as a dev you can develop blind spots. it's helpful if you can have a dedicated tester or two who enjoys breaking your game
>>
>>176056328
lets say you do that but you have experience in that some bugs just don't happen 100% of the time and people will do things you didn't expect

what then, i still have the fear
>>
>>176056523
you're still thinking anout this fundamentally wrong. you should WANT people to find the bugs in your demo

>people will do things you didn't expect
this is where the value comes from
>>
>>176056373
I experimented with some ways of representation and that one seemed the best. Helmets didn't look too good / as good as the armor as they tend to cover some of the sprite and at the moment they are only an option if I come up with enough interactions.

More specifically, I'm not convinced that the bodies don't fit the style and think that it's more you being wary of change (which I was too) and I like the idea of seeing your portrait as a thing that could move through the dungeon.
>>
>>176056796
that's a good point, thanks, but one more thing

what if some guy breaks the game and just tells you about it with limited info, you aren't able to replicate it and no one else seems to be able to

how do you not panic?
>>
>>176056951
That's already happened to be twice this demo day. You just press for information and keep testing. At the end of the day if you can't find it, you mark it down on your buglist under "cannot reproduce" until someone discovers what triggers it.

How do you find someone to make music for your game for free if you're not planning to make money off of it?
Until now I asked musicbros here to make music for my Jam games, but this is different. I would need a number of songs.

Make separate hands for the character that can move around the whole character. Then instead of rotating around the center it will revolve around the center. That way it'll look like the player is pulling off some crazy behind the back stuff and/or switching hands. Works better with pistols or other one handed stuff.
