I never thought that was for show, since he's erythromycin clearly infatuated with humanity and fiercely wants to see them for himself, something that'd be impossible next to Asgore's plan. Mettaton being selfish is apart of his character arc.

When an opportunity to get the body he always dreamed of came up and he was able to make his dreams come true, he took it and ended up leaving his friends and family behind, and as his fame grew he ended up leaving behind the one that made his dreams come true. It may be a possibility that Napstablook's constant depressed attitude, Shyren's intense shyness, and Alphys' own depressed attitude and intense shyness are at least partially a result of Mettaton leaving them behind to chase glitz and glamour.

When the True Pacifist Frisk comes through, they remind Mettaton of who he used to be and what he left behind, and he instantly goes to make up for it. Even in the King Mettaton endings, he goes to apologize to Alphys. But it's too late... she's gone. But at least he can erect a statue in her honor.
