I toyed around with early game naked corvettes. They need to be used specifically to be good.
The point is that they're much MUCH more cost-effective than upgraded corvettes or destroyers, but they're still worse. You need to intentionally go twice over your fleet cap (this is still super cost-effective since their maintenance is so low mind you) for them to shine.
Basically the only time this really has any use is at the start of hard/insane games, and only to annex your immediate neighbor. But it's still kind of fun.

I used the console to switch between a bunch of AIs in my latest game and I discovered 2 things:

One of these retards (the most powerful one with dozens of planets) was producing more food than minerals, he was at +1000 food/month and +176 minerals per month, this was with the +100% all resources of insane difficulty. They just don't build enough mines.

Okay so, using ISB's harder FE/AE mod, how the fuck am I supposed to cost-efficiently battle AE fleets? Two leviathans and a titan, 150k fleet strength, just zap away my fleet with their titan lasers. I just threw a 300k fleet at one of their 250k fleets, and they came out on top without losing a single capital ship, just their escorts, with me limping back with just a few surviving dreadnaughts.

I tried swarming them in corvettes and destroyers, but the titan lasers prioritize my own capital ships instead of the meatshield, making them pointless.

Anyone had the combat report go nuts on an asteroid mission? The OTHER asteroid mission type where you protect a civ under passive observation. The asteroid appeared as "alien ship" and the results seem mixed up with those of a previous battle, except the fleet sizes for both sides are wrong.

I love the prosperity opener. Then it depends on my surrounding planets. I find the 10% habitability from diplomacy to be insanely good, expansion opener and the 2 left most things are great (growth and trad cost). Harmony opener is god tier. As is supremacy for the 20% border range.

It's really all situational. I do try to fill out prosperity, though, since it gives lots of nice stuff like upkeep reduction meaning fewer energy dedicated planets and more mineral/science ones.

You find yourself a xeno race (preferably one with the Strong trait for an extra bonus to minerals) and then you oppress them to hell and back.
Put them on every mineral/food tile and let your native race focus on important things like energy, unity, and research. If you're feeling particularly genocidal and don't care if everyone hates you, you set other species to Undesirable and (assuming you have Utopia) change their Purge to Forced Labor so you can exploit even more xenos for resources, and then once they all die off you can replace them with your own slaves.
Also research Slave Army so you can turn your slaves into Battle Thralls and go full Ur-Quan.
If you have Utopia you can also just skip the middle man and design a race with Syncretic Evolution and you'll start the game with slave pops already, which saves you the effort of finding a vulnerable race of pre-FTL xenos to conquer and enslave. Everything else still applies.

Do you place them in systems where you'd normally put a an Outpost?

Merchant fleets, would be researchable and would be an offshoot of trade that eventually moves to trading with other empires that allow it.

While researching this, Internal trade would be one of the first things that would be research with this trade line allowing to increase resources between planets that are trading between each other like beyond earth.

There's a possibility that you'll run into aliens if you decide to send the ship through one of the wormholes. Since you don't have any radar, you won't see them coming. You'll just get a notif that the ship has been destroyed, and the only thing left behind will be the escape pods of the survivors with a countdown until their life support runs out. There's the "Remove" button right there above the Brief Summary Display. You'll probably want to get acquainted with the multiplier next to it for adding multiple modules at a time. Much more efficient when you need lots of fuel tanks/weapons/fire control/etc.
Also, if you find a colonizable planet, land on it immediately. Once you add another planet to your empire you can subsidize private shipping lanes, which will ferry materials and components to locations in exchange for money, which is a lot more convenient than ordering a freighter fleet around.

It needs planets, that's all. Doesn't need to be a colonizable planet either, you can build it in orbit of any sort of planet, colonized or barren. The only real downside is the unity penalty you take, since it counts as a colonized planet. But you can alleviate that by building a pleasure dome if you have the harmony tradition, while simultaneously boosting your science/energy production through the happiness buff

Democracy is the best. No reason to go fanatical spiritualist you only need regular to become psychic. Never ever go egalitarian never go fanatical pacifist ever. The border range from xenophobe is great. You may want to put one point into militarist and just regular spiritualist. Dont panic to hard on civics you can change them later in the game.

The rare psionic leader is nice but its not actually good till you get the second level. Then you get global bonus on every pop all leaders are way better and you get access to the shroud which gives you access to the best tech in the game along with random bonuses. Along with a totally cool deal to literally double everything you own in the game at no charge.

Prosperity, obviously. You're never gonna have a colony ship by the time you have expansion 1, yet you will have many places to build mining stations by the time you get prosperity 1.

Also, you can save your first ascension point for Habitats or something. They're too situational to say "this one is the best", but you can never go wrong with the research speed so it's never obsolete.

The cheaper reaserch stations to start the near limitless additional tech from just surveying planets the 1 extra point on all leaders finish up with 10% faster tech and if you combo that with your first asscension perk being the tech one then you are talkin a crap ton of tech.
