You can use the Caste System (pops enslaved only on Food and Mineral tiles) on both the founder species and xenos if you're Fanatic Xenophile + Authoritarian. Or if you want to be Swedish you can even choose to give Full Citizenship to xenos while using Caste System on your own primary species.

tl;dr, the whole civics/ethics system is fucking awful and doesn't even play to its own potential strengths

>Can't recreate British Parliamentary Monarchy, but are forced into a Weyland-Yutani shitshow or citizen stratocracy even with entrenched aristocracy

>Can't replicate antebellum US and be egalitarian, yet tolerate slavery

>Can't even go for Imperial China where slavery is outlawed, but your leadership is still decadent

It's like a fucking cartoon, and has so much missed potential. Victoria 2 had entire quest chains that drastically altered your politics and mid-term goals based on conflicts of ethics. An interstellar empire should have that times 10.

That'd just be Egalitarian Xenophobe. USA was cool with slavery because God made all men free but blacks weren't considered true men. Xenophobe allows you to enslave ayys whilst keeping your own people free.

>>

Well, I just wanted to try to play dictatorial spiritualists for once and go psionic route to check out the Shroud.

I think it all fell apart when I stupidly agreed to a war where the reward was three ceded planets which instantly went into insane unrest.

Seems to me like the best option is to either purge the fuck outta filthy xenos, or liberate them and then vassalize them.
>>
>>176109898

Slaves can't join factions so you can just put foreign pops/undesirable ethos pops into a caste system type slavery then put them on food or mineral tiles. They won't bother you any more after. Factions despawn if there members hit 0, so if you enslave everyone, bye bye faction. Best to do it before they get a load of members.
>>
>>176109758
Largely just a way for you to change ethics in-game, so you can start Pacifist Xenophobe, rush all the Ascension rewards, then swap to Militarist Xenophobe and purge everyone.

If you get pops who are members of a faction that is opposed to your government's ethics, they get unhappyness but likewise, I've never had an issue with them really.

>>176109758
Factions supposedly cap the followers' max happiness, meaning followers of unhappy factions will also be unhappy pops. They have a set of demands that when met increase happiness, and when ignored decrease their happiness.

If you got a really happy faction they also give you extra Influence. You can also spend influence to suppress a faction (decreased happiness, but less followers) or support it (increased happiness and more followers). If there's a faction that has enough followers, but it's not your governing ethos you can spend a big chunk of influence to embrace it and change your governing ethos altogether.
>>
>>176110659
It doesn't cap you retard it sets a base.
>>
>>176110421
Use the faction system, promote your xenophobe faction if you have one.

If you don't, fighting ayys tends to cause one to appear.
>>
>>176110695
Oh right, I was actually wondering why it was so easy to never get unrest despite having plenty of unhappy factions to the point I could ignore them altogether.
>>
>>176106093

>>
>>176110781
tbf it should cap, because atm an unhappy faction just means slightly more likely to be unhappy pops whereas happy factions means easily 100% happy pops

If your first contact protocol is aggressive, and your fleets are aggressive, they'll REEEEEEE at anything that comes near them, even if it's an uncontacted alien vessel.

If it peaceful, an aggressive fleet will ignore uncontacted alien vessels.

It's a really minor difference, most people don't have their fleets set to aggressive all the time anyway.

It's not that bad. I out tech and out fleet them all and I have a rather large vassal. Combined, they can take me, but I also have allies surrounding them. It's a weird situation. Hyperdrive is only good for flavor in one-FTL-type games. With the pre-FTL mod that I use hyperdrive is the least useful of the 4 types of FTL, so I use it almost never if I can avoid it. Warp is useful for making snap offensive decisions without having to worry about infrastructure. Wormhole is great for moving within your own borders and is good for offense if you can handle the micromanagement that comes with building transgalactic infrastructure for large warfleets. Once you get Jump drive it's all irrelevant, though.

I was wondering, should i get stellaris or galactic civ 3 ?
And is there any game where you can play some sort of scenario when a ultra-advanced civilization rule/exterminate the whole galaxy and you have to somehow survive ? (think reaper in the Mass Effect series)

Guys

What I should do if enemy bullies me with his 1,5k fleet and i had 450 which was sadly destroyed.

The point is he is not able to conquer my planets with his troop transports because my defense soldiers are hella strong and repel every invasion.

Sadly I am losing % in the Warscore, which means after few years I will have to give him away my 4 planets for free. EVEN if he didn't conquered any one of them, this is truly a bullshit.

Gal civ3 is a big load of meh. Stellaris is fun for first few hours or if you like "Roleplaying", which essencially consists of daydreaming while playing a game with no soul. Gal civ 2 is the way to go if you are interested in a run of the mill Space 4x. I could give a long winded explanation for about why I say so if you want, but most everyone agrees with this.

The "ohmygod the galaxy is in danger" is a pretty common trope and is present in all 3 games. Tho I'm not 100% sure about GC3.
>>
>>176118485

Early game war is kind of annoying. If you're attacking, you really can't engage enemies while they are around a spaceport. However if you're defending then you really need to bait the enemy into your spaceports and then drop your fleet on top of them. Each starport is 1k strength at the start, so with really any kind of fleet, it'll be enough to hold its own against most until cruisers. They're the best defensive building in the game.
>>
>>176118579
Before I get proper fleet war will be over, also his fleet grows every month. Now is 1,7k

>>176118710
Actually a bait into spaceport might work, just not sure how to lure them into the trap. I could try to send a single corvertte into their system and they automaticaly stop bombarding and follow it. Its also better because I use only hyperlanes FTL
>>
>>176118832

Spaceport bait is usually doable by just having a weaker spaceport than the enemy fleet. Happened to me earlier today, AI just went around attacking my spaceports (1.1k vs his 1.7k) and I would then drop my 1.6k fleet on top of him. He would emergency retreat every time, though. Pain in the ass. Hate game AIs that run away from ANY fight it can't possibly win.

You can't prevent them from spawning entirely but you can single out the pops that would join the factions.

Egalitarians and xenophiles found the Alien Justice Party and whatnot, the anti slavery anti purge party. So, if you can enslave pops, you only enslave egalitarian and xenophiles, then that faction can't ever spawn.

It becomes fucky when you conquer someone, so just set their species rights so they can't join factions and you're set.

Meh, there's nothing really special about it. Not a big enough leap from 5 to 6 like 4 to 5: BNW imo. Needs more mechanics and systems, some reworks, etc. Civs are lacking, too, not many interesting ones. Best off waiting for the first major expansion I think.

Endless Space 2 if you can tolerate space. It's feature complete, just missing a couple things like balance and 1 faction and is out by the end of the month IIRC.

First League you basically go around scanning dead worlds that used to belong to them and hearing about how multiculturalism failed, with them all devolving to infighting and killing each other before the thing collapsed. You're never given any specific reason or major trigger for all this social strife, it just apparently happened and they all died.

The reward is basically some pitiful amount of research points, like normal anomaly levels.

For one thing it makes no sense for a Hive Mind to need influence considering every single being of the race is of one mind.
Then again a lot of things don't make sense with Hive Minds considering how many events detail individuals with opinions and thoughts doing things when, realistically, it should be the Mind investigating events through the drones. There hasn't been nearly enough of the game rewritten/redesigned to properly simulate playing a Hive Mind race.

Let's say in a 4x game there was a way to accrue large amounts of debt from government spending and/or nations could buy out property and companies from your nation's private sector.

Based on these factors, at some point in the game, they could make a huge trade deal that basically allowed them to purchase cities/star systems from you and you cannot deny the trade deal.

Retarded or interesting mechanic?

Qu fallen empire when?
They get triggered if you go into gene-modding.
>>
>>176111613
old post but just declare some rivalries on your neighbors and make sure you research the empire techs in the Society field when they show up. Depending on what factions you have in charge, make them happy. I play as a xenophobe/F. Militarist dictatorship and I cap on influence easily due to war and rivalries.
>>
>>176140079
It'd actually be really cool if we got unique fallen empires that had long ago already gone through one of the ascension paths.
Imagine a psuedo-Qu FE that periodically harvests pops from other empires and sequesters them within their borders for horrific biological manipulation, and once you get strong enough to bring the fight to them and conquer their planets you just find grotesque mockeries of organic life.

playing my first major run of Stellaris...

Playing a enslaving empire of insects. Ended up really lucky (found the infinity machine and earned a +5% bonus on research) and due to empire military buildup due to some really powerful pirate clans, I was ahead of most empires tech wise.

so in 100 some years I control about 50% of the map, I have friendly relations with a fungoid race that doesn't give me trouble, and have enslaved 6 empires, and balkanized another one with a friendly power.

Trying to say away from the FEs and had a issue that I didn't see a nice world was a holy war and suffered a humiliation when I decided to abandon it after it was demanded by one of the FE.

Now I realized that the victory condition is worlds actually settled, and not worlds in your domain. So Influence is the main bottleneck as I am sending colony ships to establish colonies throughout my space.

Now some dumb questions.

-How do you set your designs to be upgraded - I can upgrade the base ships or the ships I obtained after integrating a vassal. But right now my fleet has about 2-3 generations of ships in it and I would love to upgrade them without scrapping and replacing.

- Is there any way other then changing the tribute amount to take energy credits and minerals from your sectors?

-I know what costs influence, but is there a way to increase it by buildings or such?
>>
>>176142357
>>-How do you set your designs to be upgraded - I can upgrade the base ships or the ships I obtained after integrating a vassal. But right now my fleet has about 2-3 generations of ships in it and I would love to upgrade them without scrapping and replacing.
there's an auto-upgrade option, but I don't use it. I'm guessing it would update your designs as new weapons and modules are researched?
>-Is there any way other then changing the tribute amount to take energy credits and minerals from your sectors?
Until next patch, yes. Next patch you can use influence to drain 75% of their reserves.
>-I know what costs influence, but is there a way to increase it by buildings or such?
Buildings, no. Factions and tech, yes.
>>
>>176142768
And I am guessing that influence is the main bottleneck to prevent rapid expansion?

>>176142768
>designs as new weapons and modules are researched?
I am not sure it is working, but I will just allow attrition to weed out older ships unless I have a long peacetime.
>>
>>176139656
Most of the sprite packs don't have to be up to date, they work just fine despite them saying they're not updated. Ships might be a whole other issue though.
>>
>>176143262
>And I am guessing that influence is the main bottleneck to prevent rapid expansion?
Assuming you don't get boxed in by other empires, then yes. Aside from edicts and special buildings, or defensive pacts/alliances if you're a pussyfaggot the only thing you'll be spending the bulk of your influence income on is frontier outposts. Pro tips: you can tell what kind of world preference other empires have just by looking at the planet's surface in their background. Use that to tell whether or not there's worlds they can inhabit nearby, and place outposts there to deny them the expansion.

tall, few very large cities planets etc.
>>
>>176155345
You can queue up the removal of a planet's tile blockers while waiting for the planet to fill up, which is extremely convenient for when things start to take off. The power of Mastery of Nature is removing the cost of removing tile-blockers in the early game, which is a big cost, and also negating the need to research any tile blocker removal techs, so you can skip straight to terraforming or habitability or literally anything else. It's a massive QoL boost for early-game.

I usually have two perks by the time I get the hab tech because I focus on my core world, populating a large world or twowith droids to get food/minerals so I spike ahead in tech, using Frontier outposts to grow my borders and grab valuable systems, I usually reach end game with 2-3 systems, 3-4 planets, home world focusing science, two planets with droids focusing mins one planet focusing food and around 10 habitats focusing science and energy.

>>
>>176156314
I have mineral generation in the hundreds due to Frontier outposts, and keep up in fleet cap just fine, size 20ish worlds filled with robots and mineral generation get you a lot, ontop of that if you need more you have share the burden and the mineral one for planets to buff it more.
When I play mp I am usually top mineral generation, top science, and get cursed at for using robots because some people feel they are op.

>>176156681
Bots are cool, but god damn it if they don't take a long-ass time to build.

The point of "tall" is not to build as little planets as possible, but to ONLY build in big (20+) planets. The main point is to minimize tech malus.
If you're not rushing research, tall is not ideal.

Qu are the 'villains' of a short picture book sort of thing. It's not really a picture book but the descriptions don't do it justice.

Essentially, humans make a space empire. They have a golden age, more or less. Then the Qu come and conquer everything, turning humans into mostly presentient animals on different planets. Humans either evolve, or fail to evolve, on the various different worlds in horrifically detailed mutilated forms through evolution over millions of years into yet another space empire.

More shit happens between robotic humans who managed not to get found by the Qu when they first came but more or less it's there for the horrifying pictures. Pretty fun read desu.

There is no single answer to this.
Are you going tall or wide first?
Are there other planets in the system?
I have had systems with four size 15ish planets that I would normaly not colonize but the total tile size for the system was huge since it was around 60 total tiles for the system.
Are there any resources on the planet?
Is it going to push your borders into more valuable systems?

It's more that the Qu saw humanity trying to remake the universe in our image, which was heresy to the Qu. Relevant quote:

The worlds of humanity, gardens of terraformed paradise, seemed strangely empty to the Qu. Often there were no raw materials available other than people, their cities and a few basic niches of ecology, populated by genetically modified animals and plants from Earth. This was because humans had erased the original alien ecologies in the first place.

Offended by another race trying to remake the universe, the Qu set forth to punish these infidels by using them as the building materials of their vision.

That game of life is hard to play

I'm gonna lose it anyway
The the FE has awaked after some delay
So this is all I have to say
That suicide is painless

It brings on many changes
I can take or leave it if I please
The sword of time will pierce our skin
It doesn't hurt when it begins

But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger, watch it burn
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes

And I can take or leave it if I please
A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be

And I replied oh why ask me
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I...

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
I can take or leave it if I please

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes

From the in-game description it the trait is about a society that isn't frugal. Our society isn't frugal at all. If everyone was frugal, our economy would crumble. People buy "useless" shit all the time. A new cellphone, a new car, more clothing and etc. That's the norm, sadly.
>>
>>176171713
>implying something like wasteful isn't more of cultural thing or something borne out of necessity to jump-start industrialization rather than something inherently tied to the species

>>176172037
But I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying that now people are starting to look around an see just how much we waste and pollute. Energy is getting greener, and we are finding less wasteful means of production every year. As much as people in positions want to rail against it, that is just the direction we are going. I'm not saying humanity of the present isn't wasteful, we most certainly are. But this game takes place two hundred years in the future and the default human civilization is a unified globalist utopia, so you would think that if they can unite the entire planet, then they would be able to reduce how much we waste.

There is plenty of real world evidence that humanity doesn't make remotely ideal use of its resources. Whether or not it is efficient in the grand scheme of the galaxy is up for debate. What is true is that people make a LOT of useless garbage, and that means there's room for a society which doesn't make that kind of garbage.

The reason why making your fleet use 80% plasma works so damn well is because reduced shield damage is secretly the best weapon trait.
Any weapon with increased shield damage will always have "do shield damage at all costs" as its #1 priority and only actually do damage when there's literally no shields to attack. Even if that weapon is just kinetics with +15% shield damage. Even if that weapon is a L slot weapon and it's shooting at corvettes.
Any weapon with no shield modifier just does whatever. It will try to attack whatever. The enemy fleet starts to lose HP more or less uniformly.
Plasma doesn't do that. As soon as a single target loses shield EVERY plasma available is immediately shooting it, and for some reason it has anti-overkill so no damage is wasted.
The end result is that plasma actually chews through fleets one by one, it's actually shrinking the enemy fleet throughout the whole fight. Look at how enemy HP is usually 99%. That's how you know it's being optimal.

Johan did after the release of HoI 4. He essentially said 'I don't agree with the decisions that were made, but it's out of my hands'.

Wiz on the other hand chose to embody the Paradox forums instead of a game developer.

>Why can't a spiritualist, authoritarian police state whose entire government revolves around ethics attraction not selectively purge/re-educate disloyal faction pops Wiz?

>Was HoI 4 improved after its release, or, like Stellaris, was it made worse?

The difference between HoI4 and Stellaris is that Stellaris was released bare-bones, but has near-infinite potential for growth mechanics-wise. The only thing holding it back from eventually being better than Distant Worlds is engine optimization, (which can be accomplished as HoI3, EU IV, andCK 2 (until Paradox went full retard by adding India) have shown.

HoI 4 on the other hand went balls deep into a god-awful system that cannot be fixed without essentially re-making the entire game. Stellaris is like vanilla HoI 3 and Victoria 2, a template. HoI 4 is a dead-end that not even redditors can tolerate, and Paradox knows it.

Love this war, conquered all the slug worlds but can't be too much aggresive now because if i move into fuckboy#1 space with my first fleet fuckboy#2 would get an advantage over my second faster but weaker fleet, and fuckboy#2 has a quite fleet unlike #1 but spaceports are still annoying in my part of the game now
>>
>>176198943
Than in that case, it's just Johann admitting they dun goofed.
It's different from Wiz's "you're only allowed to play the way I want".
>>
>>176198416
That won't work with the harder end-game crisises that ISB bring to the table. A single Prethoryn fleet is 3-500k, has ~80% evasion and most attacks ignore defenses. The only way to battle them is to chimp the AI out with a diversionary Corvette fleet while your heavy hitters attack from the rear.

>>
>>176199539

Best early game war is done with missiles so you can get early torpedoes which destroy spaceports very easily. Spaceports are very threatening and are only so powerful to prevent super early rushes. You probably won't be doing much pre 2210.

Any other weapon type, just mass corvettes. T2 weapons at least, maybe t2 engines and t2 computers for loads of evasion. If you're against missiles waiting for PD destroyers is prudent since you will lose lots of ships vs their fleet.

It's VERY easy actually.

Assuming you at least somewhat match the enemy fleet in power, build a battle station at the edge of their system, and have your fleet leave. When the enemy fleet moves to engage your station, move back to the system (hopefully you built the station so your fleet pops right on top of the enemy as they're fighting the station)

After you win the battle, if the enemy doesn't surrender (which happens a lot because relative fleet strength is now close to infinite difference), repeat until they surrender

Also I don't understand why low-tier units get the most upgrades.

Yeah, the citizen mechanic alone is a game changer.. You get one every ten turns and they level up and you can customize their role as spies, generals govvvernors etc.the AI is a lot tougher too from what little I got to play yet. They also added silicon based life forms .
Also your ability to mod factions now is greatly aided, no longer have to hunt and peck thru the XMLs in note pad the customize .

So my slave race just awakened their psionic abilities and I'm an already awakened race. My own race and the slave race pretty much switched places with the slaves now being the "main" race and the original race being slaves and all recruitable leaders are of the slave race, I have my old leaders left though.
Also I can not turn the slave race back to slaves.
I have no mods installed and I play in iron man so can not load an earlier save.

Finishing up my first game of Stellaris. How is the difficulty balancing on higher difficulties in this game? I played on normal and enjoyed it but very rarely felt challenged (as a person who is not exceptionally good at strategy games). On my next playthrough should I bump up the difficulty and AI aggresiveness both up a notch, or one or the other, or what?
>>
>>176208858
Yeah this is a problem since they introduced factions. Passive aggressive play is no longer easy to do since all militarists are somehow always imperialists.
>>
What do you think of this civic.

Doomsayers
- Must be fanatic Spiritualist.
- Buildings of Faith grant + 5 Unity and 5 % happiness.
- Decreases happiness of rivaling empires by 5 % and their opinion of you by an additional 50.
- Cannot be removed.
Flavor
- If the End of the Cycle option appears, you are obligated to take it.

How do we fix this? Considering the investments of the megastrucures, only the Sentry Array is really worth it since the Science Nexus and the Dyson Sphere can be out-done by just a few specialized habitats.
Realistically the Megastructures should be so powerful that they, alone, could carry your empire, so that they can't just be substituted with habitat spam (which won't even be possible once 1.6 comes out tomorrow).
