They don't like him because initially he opposes them publically and gives them lots of pubic grief for seemingly no reason beyond sticking to the system that failed them.

Then he not only blackmails into the party but right after that speech Morgana points out he's lying about something, so they bug his phone.

They don't find out he's actually planning on killing you until between the palace clear and the calling card, but they had no reason to really ever like him prior to that.

And that's ignoring the fact that prior to confronting him at Shido's palace, they're under the belief that he's selling them out purely for his own fame and/or because he's a crazy Shido zealot.

If anything they like him when he's going crazy and reveals himself to be evil more than his fake nice attitude because at least he's being honest with someone for once and giving them a motivation they can somewhat respect.

The brainwashing seems to start after Shido's confession.

During the calling card scene people are surprised the thieves are still around and curious what's going on but still mostly on Shido's side.

When Shido confesses they're all stunned and horrifyed and hoping it's not true.

It's only right after that that suddenly they're acting like the thieves never existed and Shido never said all those things, which is probably when the brainwashing kicked in.

Before that it's just the fickle public opinion, potentially amplified by the Grail but not actively screwing their perception.
