That'd be hard to officiate, only does 195 damage on a crit so you'd have to resupply both engies every 0.79 seconds to make sure you didn't get a non-critical finish. Would take forever to get a champion out of that.

It is in theory, but in practice it's nearly as useless as the stock axe.
The third degree, while it is technically a direct upgrade, isn't really useful compared to other melees. Other melees have a lot of utility that makes them useful, while the 'direct upgrade' just gives you a chance to hurt the medic as he's healing somebody. Which, will probably get you killed because you're basically trying to wack the medic to death while a spun up heavy mows you down.

I really don't see anybody in their right mind using it over other melees, other than "muh direct upgrade".

I'm thinking about a few variety. Either it gets a higher explosion resistance (does not apply for self-damage) for turtling

Higher heal rate from Dispensers for turtling again, that would make it a strong counterpart
OR
an active ability about destroying your own building to blown away who's nearby. May be both.
Think about blastjumping from top of teleporters. Also this ability should give command even when the building being sapped.
Think of:

That's how I would fix it. Bleeding damage is worthless now and Engi don't have any "damage built requirement" arsenal.

Is using the Wrangler, worth it?

I know that it's a good defense tool because of the shield when paired with the rescue ranger but lets say that you are against a decent spy.

I usually have my pistol for this purpose, to have a way to defend myself without getting into melee range of a spy.

i haven't really encountered many good spies, in fact ever since i started using wrangler i haven't found any that weren't pushovers to rescue ranger bolts, probably because you will inherently be closer to your sentry at all times. that isn't very helpful to you no but i just cannot really relate yet, for whatever reason spies go for wrangled sentries more than not but they don't seem to ever commit despite the only "good" weapon i have being a wrench. so with that said, you shouldn't chase spies at all in the first place and should instead just unsap your shit because hes probably baiting you if he isn't remaining in melee range which is pretty much your only option with wrangler. BUT if you use wrangler i personally don't recommend you go jag just because it takes an additional hit to unsap shit

I use it with CnD, you won't need metal bits from buildings if you know how to exhaust cloak effectively. Throw in cicle to evade Pyros and you're pretty much set.
Perhaps stock Revolver, Enforcer or Amby as weapon of choice. You can't stack crits from Sentries at all, so Diamondcrutch is optional

You don't have to stand still or crouchwalk whole map, exhaust the meter, walk and use tint colored shade you got to blend in walls you stick to.
When you look around you'll see plenty of red and blu object, wall or prop you can lurk around.
Decloaking at shadowy corners or sloped surfaces help as well as crouching. Stay high or low but learn to fake your movement with flicker as well.
If you can't bother just stick with IW or DR else just pair it with L'etranger.

I did not farm DR spies, I did not organize anything, and I did not even call up a buttbuddy to pocket me.
I like my victories pure, not tainted.

My main strat was this:
>At bridge and sewers, if far away, chip at their HP just to charge up meter a bit
>Always have at least 1 teammate near you at all times to take the heat just in case a crit hits you and you need to leg it with your 10hp
>Save your mini-crits for dire or fruity situations. You can easily take out a medic and his pocket soldier if you come from behind and have mini-crits
>Bait the fuck out of everyone. They see a sniper with an SMG in an enclosed room, they are going for the kill, get the better position and make them your bitch
>Ambushes are preferable
>If you are in a situation that fucking sucks, pop mini-crits and backtrack. Once you get them low, you start being aggressive.
>More damage = More damage.
>Jump around like a retard
>Once people see you as an actual thread they tend to panic and scatter. Hunt them down and fuck 'em up one by one like a scooby doo villain

Also, if you crunch the numbers, you will see the cleaners carbine is good for prolonged combat, due to insane reload speed and mini-crits.
This is why it sucks if you have the burst fire mindset.
So your goal is to stay alive for as long as possible. Movement is key here.
You can win any, and I mean any firefight, doing this:
>Pop Mini-crits
>Be difficult to hit
>Once your crits end, they will refill near instantly due to you being in combat
>Pop mini-crits again.
I took out a medic and his heavy, pyro & dolly this way.

So you play like a gimped scout most of the time, and then you pull out your dick when you buff yourself.

I actually had a lot of fun doing it after a while.

It would be pretty cool if limited using secondary in primary, and no double-melees. Also of course limiting the classes doing it to Scout, Soldier, Pyro, Heavy.
If a server found a way to do this I would actually play on it, reminds me of back when I ran my own server with an experimental re-balancing patch that I made myself.
It was pre-engineer update and it buffed dispensers healrate to what is just slightly below level 3 now, as one of the many things.
