Shuffle the movesets more. There shouldn't be slugger weapons and fast weapons. If I;m just going to use the onehanded moveset on my straightsword and just the twohanded moveset on my greathammer, there's no reason to not just take each half and make it one weapon or something. Just eliminate useless attacks and give everything a good running attack.

Same goes for rings, ensure they're designed such that they're always in use. At max HP there's no reason to use the SPR, and beneath max HP there's no reason to use something like llyod's shield ring. May as well make them the same ring if people are just going to swap, even if the effects themselves need to be reduced for balance's sake.

Some things can have better running attacks than others but there should be a time and a place for every move. As it stands most weapons feel downright incomplete. It's like having a fighter where one character only has grabs, one character only has jabs, and one character only has heavy swings. Obviously you can have grappler characters or characters that play ad a different tempo, but you shouldn't let naything be incomplete. It just means more and more weapon switching. Look at the caestus for instance. Do you think anyone punches with their offhand caestus? Maybe if they twohand it and cast perserverance, but if it's just in the left I'm not going to use L1. May as well let L1 activate the righthand weaponart instead of making me have to flip the caestus on and off depending on which half of my control scheme I want access too. It's just little shit like this that's annoying.

I don't get how to explain this more thoroughly. It isn't that there's a "trade off" between weapons right now, as you seem to say there is. You just hardswap. What you're saying is like saying you need to "choose" between SPR or loyd's shield ring based off of the strengths and weaknesses of each ring. The only limiting factor for weapons is build type, but there's a always at least straightsword which works for pretty much every sort of stat distribution. Save people the time it takes to hardswap and just make it unnecessary. So much of the controller is wasted in this game, it just boggles my mind the amount of time I have to spend using the D-pad of all things, when L1 is typically completely untouched in spite of being one of the most important easy-access buttons on the controller.

RoSP has at least half the effect in PvP, which is around 10% physical absorption. That's about as good as getting 10% more health from life, especially if you're healing a lot since each heal would require more swings to be undone. (unlike with the life ring, which would just let you heal more).

I thought I was gonna start playing this today but I've all day looking up builds.

Are pure melee builds just always better? I'd like to have some ranged options as well but everything I see online makes sorcery, pyromancy, and miracles seem terrible, same with bows.

What is the best way to do some ranged damage in this game!? Don't real care about PVP, and don't want PVE to be super challenging for my first run through.

Change in general. Be creative. Get rid of the greathammer jump attack and make the current running R1 an unparriable running R2, then give it some kind of low-damage overhead poke with the back of the stick. If the pole needs to move further up as well, give it some crazy shit like being able to use running attacks without actually breaking sprint in the process. There are all sorts of ways; I was deliberately attempting to be open-ended. I don't think the claim "shit ought to be less useless" is too egregious to make.

Pyromancy scales with both Int and Fai, so you're going to want a decently even distribution, with which you put more into depending on spells. You need 25 Fai/Int for pretty much every pre-DLC spell, so aim for at least that. Basically it's best to put base Str/Dex and go 30/30. Clutch rings are good in PvE, and with the Sage Ring and some Dex (with Sage Ring +2 and 10 Dex you have capped bonus spell cast speed, if you don't plan to wait until NG++, go with 15 since NG+ is easy to get, though it doesn't REALLY matter) you're going to hit the cast speed cap.

Pyro is fun but you need to find a good weapon to infuse. Check the wiki for scalings, preferably on weapons you already like.

Balance:
Weapon upgrade scaling normalized. At 99/99/99/99 a weapon will have the same AR if it is regular, sharp, dark, chaos, etc.
Same thing with flat damage weapon upgrades. Raw/fire/deep/etc all have the same AR.
A weapon with a flat damage upgrade will deal around the same damage as if all scaling stats were 12 points higher than the requirement to equip the weapon.

Change the way split damage works. Make it use the ratio of the damage with the defense instead of taking full defenses. Example 1:
You have 60 physical and 40 magic damage weapon for a total of 100 AR.
You attack something with 100 physical defense and 100 magic defense.
Because the ratio is 60:40 it will only use 60% of the physical defense and 40% of the magic defense for the damage calculation.
Example 2:
You have 50 physical, 50 fire and 50 lightning damage for a total of 150 AR.
You attack something with 80 physical, 10 fire and 30 lightning defense.
Because the damage ratio is 33:33:33 it will only use 33% of each defensive stat in the calculation. Making it 27 physical, 3 fire and 10 lightning defense.

Parrying changed, larger weapons can no longer be parried with bare hands/large shields. You now need things like the target shield to parry larger weapons.
Get rid of most the useless tardo slam the ground an inch in front of my feet attacks.
Make it so fuckhueg weapons have very low critical damage, to the point where a backstab or riposte with a fugs is basically just a way to guarantee and r1 hits.

Armor now upgrades with a new type of titanite instead of regular shards/chunks. Make it called like titanite scraps/shreddings or something.

Add staves to the game. Medium-high range, lowish damage
Add slings to the game. Don't use ammo, short range, low damage, can't be carefully aimed, one handed, very quick.

Readd hexes, make chimes for hexes and talismans for miracles.
Readd twinblades.
Remove paired weapons, make it so you can power stance any two weapons of the same class again.
Add offhand skillsets back in.
If you put a buff on a weapon it makes the durability drop faster.
Make that pyromancer fan thing that the dlc2 desert sorceress drops into a pyromancy thing, not a spell. Also make it able to bitch slap people.

Actual gameplay:

Kind of make a central hub. Not in the Majula/DS3 Firelink sense, but more in the DS1 Firelink sense in that you always seem to find a way to loop back to it. Don't just dump all the NPC's there either. Make them sprinkled around the world, and move about as you progress the story, not just make there way to the hub and never leave.

No warping until you complete the first half of the game. There should be a clear first and second part of the game.

2 or 3 initial paths from the hub. There may be some branching paths further along, but try to make it so you always end up back somewhere familiar after following the path and completing the boss.

Have a few dead end paths with optional bosses, but make sure that it's possible to move around the world backwards and forwards without finding yourself stuck.

Have multiple NPC's that serve the same function, multiple level up people, multiple blacksmiths, multiple shops for various things.

Can buy infinite shards about 20% of the way through and infinite large shards after about 60%. Cannot buy infinite chunks until NG+. Cannot buy infinite slabs until NG+2.

NG+ replaces all the consumable souls with higher tier ones, adds in some new enemies and invasions. Makes the shops have better stuff and adds in a new move or two to every boss. All +1 rings drop from bosses in NG+, all +2 rings drop from bosses in NG+2. Loot is generally better in higher new games too.

Cannot get maximum estus flask capacity and healing until the end of NG+1 as well.

trying to play through DS2, any of you have any fun weapon recommendations to get through the game? I can never find something to stick with, as far as weapons or builds go

There's a bunch of different weapons, the problem is that most aren't really different. I suggest going quality (decently even str/dex) until you find a weapon you like, and build around that. A lot of weapons can be made to scale differently too, so if you want to use magic, miracles, or pyromancy, you could probably adapt the weapon to fit your stats.

My personal favourite weapon in DS2 was the Pursuer's Ultra Greatsword, but you do you man.

Pretty important to note, Agility isn't a stat you increase directly, but is affected by ADP (primarily) and ATT. Not that much has changed beyond single-stat melee builds (i.e. pure STR/DEX) getting huge scaling buffs with their melee infusions meaning generally a lot of weapons are on par if not better than Refined now, it's a case by case thing per weapon. Dexterity scaling with Sharp in particular got a huge buff from 60 to 80 Dex.

Poison was essentially doubled in effectiveness, it's still not amazing damage but it's more noticeable and amazing when twinking. At higher level pvp it is less effective especially when everyone freely has 99 moss and moss animations are near instant. Poison is good with certain fast weapons or being able to punish people who attempt to moss or heal through it, and the Rotten Ghru Dagger and Spear are the best at that. Sharp infuse them on a Dex build and slap Rotten resin on then go to town, if you keep pressure on people poison is now usable.

Your Soul Memory is your literal power level.
You spend souls to get better armor.
You spend souls to get better weapons.
You spend souls to get better stats.
In online, you will match with people that spent around the same amount of souls to get to the same power level as you. If you learn how to play, and never lose your souls, you reap the most benefits on your character, and you will never be in an "unbalanced" fight.

All it does is favor people who don't experiment at all. Someone with three or four partially-upgraded weapons shouldn't have that investment add as much to his SM as someone who looks everything up on the wiki and completely upgrades just one or two weapons. It's fucking stupid that something I may have previously used on a build that I've since respecced away from being able to equip still leaves a dent in my SM.
