Afaik yes - characters with boots are noticably faster than thosewithout them. But that's also only hand tested.

Btw. Armor got even weaker than it was in EOIV - it now does nothing at all against TEC damage (or it does such engligable amount that random damage eats the difference).

Infliction rate also got a rather big change - for whatever reason TEC is now more important than LUC (and all infliction classes get some TEC gear to compensate, even Dark Hunter).
(In EO2U it's finally LUC exclusive and TEC gets a bit less bloated...)

I'm actually interested in the story advancement they make.
Both Untolds set up some interesting new technology that got used as safeguards or in tandem with the trees.
Even in EOIV it was mostly just "World is dead? Plant tree." even if there were some complications that needed the insect.
But in the Untolds complications were expected and they prepared accordingly. Together with the Armoroad Yggdrasil Tree being sentient that could make for some interesting lore.

i know this game is balanced and all, but should i bring a sniper or rune inmy first/startin party. They both have interesting skill trees. i know there are only 6 classes to choose from at the beginning but i can use any advice on the under/over of sniper v runemaster.

There are seven classes to choose from.
Fortress, Landsknecht, Nightseeker, Sniper, Runemaster, Medic, Dancer

Anyways - Sniper is useful in the second stratum for leg binds but it's not too bad if you have none for that. Their damage usually is middling and their infliction rate is on the lower side.
They are a middling class.

Runemaster has consistent high damage that can get around high VIT values and they can even make other elemental attackers deal even more damage (Landsknecht Links, one Nightseeker skills, some skills in two of the unlockable classes).
Definitely a very good class.

Not to mention it gives you a bunch of money, optional quests and Limit skills (the equipment is hit and miss).

The caves you unlock in EOIV are not all that optional - if you don't do them you will be severely underleveled whereas sea quests XP are nice to have but not essential.

Provoke in EOU is 10 points max. Line Guard from Hoplite in EO3 functions as both Rear Guard and Front Guard instead of being a 20 points dump for your Tank, etc.

Poison Hexer in EO2U isn't that spectacular although it still does decent amount of damage. Still the hexer's only reliable damaging curses are poison and fear so I'd say level poison to atleast a decent level and use grimoires if they feel lackluster.

Troubadour Echoing Rondo + Rosa's Elderevenge.

When someone recieves a single target heal Echoing Rondo heals everyone besides him for a nice amount (but everyone gets only healed once per turn by Echoing Rondo).
Elderevenge heals you whenever you damage an enemy for a tiny amount.
As long as you have two people deal damage each turn you basically get a Salve per turn for just a buff slot and a food slot (and there is no really good food in EOU anyways).

Anything more is items or Grimoires.

You need a few levels to get online.
Get your Hexer Curse Mastery and Curb Atk Up with Creeping Curse they can land stuff reliably.

Panic and fear are really strong tools to keep your enemy from doing anything too fancy (or anything at all with fear + any fear skill with at least one point in it).
Binding the right body parts does the same thing while also bringing your Dark Hunter online in terms of damage. Btw. the bind Cuts of War Magus have a pretty big infliction chance even at rank 1 so you have three people that can try to make an enemy fully bound.

I seriously feel if you want to go full ailment RNG rolling you could use a Troubadour instead of a Survivalist (even though it's another character that doesn't attack - unless you have some Survivalist damage Grimoires since Troub AGI is not aweful).
Warrior Song + any Prelude + Frailty Curse means your damage characters will deal about 2.4 times their normal damage.
Throw on Creeping Curse, put an ailment on, fully bind the enemy, see huge numbers fly in.

And get Vemon Curse to deal with random encounter. At rank 20 (try to recycle for high level Grimoires as the game goes on) it can melt almost any random encounter.

It means you can equip said equipment.
A shield for your Medic, a gun for your Ronin - stuff like that is only possible with having the right equipment bonus.
Iirc if you want to use a skill your class doesn't natively have the weapon for you need the skill and the equipment bonus to match up.
In EO2U you will be able to equip what you need as soon as you have any Grimoire skill that requires a certain equipment.

In EOU they don't, in EO2U they do.
As a consolation many enemy skills in EOU are actually worth using while most are complete trash in EO2U.
Mostly Grimoires in EOU are useful to trade around passives or Charge skills (like the Gunner's Action Boost in story mode) or to get another set of Medic skills for when things go south and you need to get on your feet quick.

Btw. Boost increases the level of the skill you use by 5 (that's actually all it does which is a bit boring compared to Limits, Bursts or Force Boosts) - so you can get level 15 skills that way.
A level 15 Viper ticks for about 750 damage which is nice even against FOEs.

My first game was EOIII - I got into the series by pirating it.
EOIV still has a special place in my heart. Maybe it's just because it is so distinct from the other games. Especially the Untolds are pretty close to each other with many of the same classes and the RNG-fiesta that is Grimoires.

There aren't many, sadly.
Petrification Stare of Cockatrices can be used since Hexer lacks an innate petrification option (with Chained Benefit + Creeping Curse you can even petrify many FOEs semy reliable which is nice for "kill quick" conditionals).
Power Gel and Affection Collar are useful for Survivalist and Gunner as they increase their AGI and thus are a damage bonus that gets around diminishing returns.
Draconic Fury is a 150% damage buff and thus stronger than class skills.
Charge is, well, a Charge skill for classes that don't have their own and despite it's description increases all damage not just physical.

Besides this there isn't much - damage skills are overpriced, infliction skills have low rates, buffs/debuffs are below what class skills offer.

My hope is that Grimoires will become just that in EO3U.
With subclasses you no longer need stones to get access to skills of more than one class.

In EOV there is weapon forging that just increases the general strength of a weapon instead of the wierd semi normal attack modification, semi accessiore forge system of EOIII and EOIV.
Some weapons have innate skills that your character can use by wielding them and those get stronger with the forge level of the weapon.

So put that forging in, give every weapon a Grimoire slot to bind the level of the enemy skill to the weapon level, have Grimoires be a secondary conditional drop instead of an RNG thing and go to town.
Not a dedicated Blue Mage (since I don't think it would work that well with EOs balance and skill trees) but every character can be a bit blue magey.

It's a cute colorful game easy enough that you will see whatever you try to do working but still tough enough to present resistance.
Overworld also expands the scope of your exploration into an adventure while also forcing you to take a break from all the dungeon crawling every now and then without making you stop playing.
Despite some serious flaws in subclassing and skill progression, it's very well put together and everything fits together nicely.

I never knew they actually died if you did not murder the deer instantly - in a pretty gruesome way at that.
EOIV is the most colorful and happy go lucky but between that and you finding Imperial soldiers that are getting eaten from the inside by the Titan's Curse while talking to you it sure doesn't mess around.

Btw I actually died one time against the deer because I forgot it can panic an entire line instead of just a single person like EO2U deer.

Since you are right at the start that's your best course of action.

In later strata I just let the one behind solo a few first stratum mobs until the XP is about equal.
EOIV is really nice about this since Old Forest Mine has encounters with really low XP so you can get your bars very close together. I still sometimes had uneven level ups with one character needing 4 XP for the next level...

The cleanest method (and the only one available in Untold story modes) is to rest everyone and grind them back up so their bars are completely even.
Of course this hurts more in the DS games where rest is pretty expensive.

Apocalypse's story starts off halfway through SMT4's Neutral Ending. I'd recommend playing through 4 first, playing a few other games cause Apocalypse does reuse some assets from 4 and you don't want to get burned out, then coming back anf playing Apocalypse.

Relax anon - you are on the first Stratum.
The first stratum in EOU is pretty easy, including Fenrir who got downgraded to be a glorified tutorial for a mechanic you won't even use that often later in the game.

Second stratum gets ever so slightly harder, throwing ailments at you mixed in with hard hitting enemies to take advantage of your weakened party members.

First half third stratum can only be problematic if you have low damage (until the mid-boss the third stratum has) but the second half is ready to kick your ass.
High ice damage so you better have Ice Wall ready. Also high physical damage so better use Line Guard. Since your Protector can't go Ninja you better have the damage to kill one source of damage in encounters that throw both at you.

Fourth Stratum gets a bit easier on a fight-to-fight basis but it's an endurance test so that might explain that. Boss floor is interesting and boss is challanging if you don't grind (since you are missing most of the XP from the story exclusive dungeon at that point).

5th Stratum is where it gets really mean and many random encounters can kill you if you get unlucky.
Post-game you only need to get not lucky for that to happen.

Ronin is unfortunately not really strong. Extreme early game when everyone still uses normal attacks they have quite a punch but as soon as skills get online their tiny TP pool, delay because of Stances and lack of damage increase on their Force Boost makes them average damage dealers with a lot of downsides.

Troubadour needs a good team.
Warrior Song is at most 40% damage increase under diminishing returns (with other damage buffs/defense debuffs) for everyone.
Preludes are at most 40% damage increase without DR for one person. That's right - Preludes ignore the normal diminishing returns that make buff stacking less appealing in EO2U. Btw. the buffs are multiplicative so with both you don't deal 180% damage but 1.4*1.4= 196% damage (with no other modifiers).
Fantasias change resistances so they also ignore DR but how much damage you get depends on how high the resistances were before. But they only work for elemental damage, not with physical (unless you want to use Palms to make physical skills into elemental skills).
Crusade also ignores DR since it's a one turn only effect.

Assuming 100% resistances before Fantasias were used the damage increase a Troubadour offers is 1.4*1.4*1.4*1.5 = 411.6% - if your damage characters used Charge effects and maybe have some other buffs (although DR will skew all results) that means massively big damage which erases even the huge HP pools of bosses very, very fast.

Souvereign and Troubadour tread into each others terretory quite a bit. It's not that one is strictly better than the other but I would not recommend running them both at the same time.
Troubadour want's your parties buff slots to do anything, really.
Sovereign wants your parties buff slots for Order Mastery and Morale Boost in addition to most of her move set being buffs.

Although there are some chees strats making use of Fantasias and Circles (since multiple Circles for the same element stack) - but that is something for if you want to bring bosses from 100 to 0 in a single attack (after some turns of setting up) not a viable party composition.

But I also would not recommend running two healers or Protector and Beast in the same party so it's nothing exclusive to Sovereign and Troubadour.
Overlay happens to buff characters less often, is all.

Seems like Mirror Shield is not RNG.
It's bound to the Blue Heart but if he has actions queued up that he is forced to do beforehand it will get delayed.

Most important is he will put it in his queue as soon as a Blue Heart is up so before a Heart is up for the first time or if he used Shield once for every Heart that was up already you are safe.

The only routine I can say for sure that takes priority over Mirror Shield is attack - Wail - Ice Breath.
So if he used a normal attack and then summoned his Heart there is a chance he uses Wail instead of Mirror Shield (since afaik not every normal attack means he is locked into this pattern).
If he used Wail last turn he should be forced to use Ice Breath.

So it's safest to wait with your damage until the Shield was used unless he forced himself into Ice Breath via Wail.

I recently replayed EO2U story mode on expert.
Everything except Scylla and Juggernaut died in single digit turns.
And to think the story party has no access to Dark Hunters or Troubadours.

EO2U is no EOIV that let's you just slap together anything and it will work out somehow - so when you build a low damage party you will run into trouble.
But that's what happens if a game is actually demanding. There is a reason there are difficulty settings now (although it would be better if Picnic would be an actual difficulty setting like it was in EOU instead of a "grind here for free" mode.)

Now that physical and magical ATK actually exist "uses TEC for damage" does not need to be niche anymore (especially since TEC is hopefully split for good).

I want a Spellsword with fire/cut and volt/cut damage and I want an Ice Mage with ice/stab and ice/bash damage so that you can cover all weaknesses with only two classes.

Gunner and runemaster are pretty brittle so it might not be a good idea.
Medic is broken in the sense that it can heal from anywhere in the dungeon but the AI makes it utterly useless, usually refusing to do anything at all unless it's right next to the healing target.

What I usually do is walk forward with my ninja, closely followed by a melee class (landsknecht, protector, wanderer). If I get blocked by a monster in a hallway, I either trade places with the monster or use hawk strike to get through it, letting my other melee class join. Then I take control of the ranged class unless I need to do something specific with my ninja.
Other than that, the only times I use the movement skills is to skid around the room, grabbing wandering boxes and reaching faraway enemies that I want to dispatch fast. Letting party members wander is probably not on your best interest.

As a recomendation, protector is pretty damn good. For starters, it's actually a fortress skill-wise. Their provoke skill is so effective that regular monsters will ONLY attack them, opting to let their turn pass if there's no way to attack them. Secondly, while provoke is active their defenses become so brutally high that they'll rarely take more than single-digit damage. Enemies will need to use debuffs if they want to make a dent.

Also, remember to fill those guild slots, you'll want extra forces to defend forts.

Catching up is viable as long as it's in the same room. The moment they (or you) are in a hallway, they'll panic and go on their own little adventure.

As for other classes the AI is bad with, with dancer they tend to spam attack tango and defense tango A LOT, so better disable those skills.
Other problem with the AI is that they tend to waste a lot ot TP. I've had my ninja spamming her ranged attack while right next to her target. As a rule of thumb, if they can use a ranged attack rather than moving, they will.

Yes, but keep in mind they're one of the classes that tend to clog entrances if there are enemies in the room. To top it off, since members tend to follow your leader as long as they aren't very close to the enemy, you might see some back and forth when trying to remove them form the entrance.

Personally, I usually use medic just for bosses and DOEs, having a dancer instead during exploration. Since they're melee classes, they won't get in the way and they'll usually be right next to those who will need healing the most.

Doesn't matter because seeker forts you can warp to exist and you should be fighting with your main team whenever possible so you get 8 units wailing at DOE (they are piss easy but it still helps)
You get enough leftover gear to put at everyone from chests and only thing you need is a hexer at the fort you're fighting at and landshark if you want to just fight with the stationed units (you can transfer people anytime so having one of each and moving as needed is viable)

How early are we talking? It probably depends on your party composition (mainly if you have a Hexer or not) but rushing for Ecstasy is usually the right choice.

If you don't have another source of binds besides Dark Hunter they might need their bind accuracy though so in that case it might be best to postpone their damage and play them as support characters for a while by picking Curb ATK Up when the binds are still at rather low level.

Runs full speed and the only issue I ever found is the text box sprites getting slightly fucked when you use anything other than the 3DS' native resolution.

Mouse mapping was pretty doable, though I also did some controller remapping to make the right stick of my 360 controller do mouse movements if I wasn't feeling it. That worked surprisingly decently.

In short: tight design and great freedom.

First, the maps are actually well thought out (beyond EO1 and its fetish for long corridors).
There are shortcuts in nice enough distances that you are able to get in, make some meaningful progress (by unlocking a shortcut) and get out in a few minutes if you only want a quick session.

But even if you want a long session being able to make progress fast is good since fights are very involved.
It's not like many other DRPG where the first dozen levels are you normal attacking and hoping something falls over, preferably something not in your party - after the very early game (first one and a half floor) every character will use skills most of the time if not all of the time because otherwise you will get overwhelmed.

FOEs (big enemies you actually see on the map) also make for a ton of interesting puzzles and strange situations that very few other games offer.
Since you can approximate how close you are to a battle by watching the blue curcle in the lower right corner turn red you will sometimes find you forcing the next random encounter so it doesn't happen while a FOE is chasing you.
They are basically moving obstacles that can cause a quick game over if encountered too early but evading them is usually not that hard - but they will absolutely join in battles already under way if they have the chance.

And lastly, balancing is pretty tight - in the 3DS games at least. There are some classes that under or over perform but in general you have a wide variety of possible party combinations you can run.
And if you run a single party you will usually not need to grind unless you Rest to often (resetting your skill points at the cost of two levels).

Skill trees are also great. It's not only about what you give your characters but also the way you get there - rushing to master a skill or leaving it at a lower level and TP cost can majorly change the way encounters go.

Salamander is a post game boss - you are not supposed to fight him when you first met him.

Your Protector should never heal. Their TEC is low and even though their VIT is high they don't heal that much - and they are slow as balls while they are at it.

Protector gets Front Guard maxed as soon as TP allow it and spams it constantly to minimize the damage to your front line takes - especially when you have some squishy front liners like Dark Hunter or Ronin (don't use Ronin) who otherwise get oneshot often.

Next are the Walls.
Fire Wall 5-9 is extremely useful, borderline essential for the second stratum boss (10+ only increases TP costs for some small absorb and is not worth it).
Ice Wall 5-9 is important for the thrid stratum boss.
Volt Wall 5-9 (along with the other Walls) is nice to have for the fifth Stratum boss if you are lacking in damage.
Having them all is often nice for FOEs and random encounters.

Then you can go for Sentry Guard and the defensive passives to turn massively dangerous hits into soft strokes.

Ok, if you want to do that I have a really stupid idea for you.
Protector is your healer - and Beast is your tank.

Heal Guard has priority (as all Guard moves do) so you can heal all damage the Beast has taken while also reducing the physical damage your Beast takes.
You will probably still build towards the Walls since they are too damn good in EO2U.

Run three damage characters besides your two tanks and if you are really crazy you can use the food that make Thericas effect a whole line as your tool for cleansing (when it is necessary - in normal exploration the TP +30% food is the best).

By doubling up on tanks you can even set up Protection Vow pretty safely - or at least without letting the rest of the team unguarded.

Just be aware that it is not quite ideal since sub support Protector really has no damage or offensive buffs or anything.

Magic Weapon deals 450% INT damage for 10 TP based on the weapon you have equipped - or 125% for 2 TP at rank 4.
Since other skills for the three element Warlock are pretty expensive and area based (without Compression Formt that makes them even more expensive) this can be sort of your normal attack at rank 4 or an actually pretty big blast for a reasonable price at rank 10.
But it means you have no staff (or use it with a staff from the front row...).

I liked the idea first when I started EOU1, but it seems like a big mess, with the vast majority of the grimoires you get being rather pointless and there isn't much to do with them. Also while the idea of using enemy skills is fun at first, quickly you realize that they're made redundant compared to player skills and are mostly straight out worse than them.

Reduced randomness in that you can trade grimoires you don't need for ones that you do. Also lets you recycle tons of low level grimoires for a single higher level one.
And finally, instead of a single stone with seven slots you get up to six stones with one skill each.

When you want to be specific they still take a lot of preparation, effort and praying but it's not nearly as much of a mess as EOU made them.

Ronins were good in EO2 DS and their analogue in EO3 was great. They were okay in EO1 and EOU but they were really underwhelming in EO2U.

Unless you already played EOU sword Dark Hunter is probably better there.
It is easier to set up all 3 binds in EO2U so Ecstasy becomes the clearly better option. And Sword Dark Hunters have a petrify skill in EOU without any strange conditions the one in EO2U has.

Besides what the other anon said you now also can stack normal skill levels and Grimoire skill levels.
That means your normal Grimoires are actually somewhat useful (in that they strengthen you instead of giving your party members skills they will never use) but it also means you will only ever have 6 skills at their true maximum level. But usually the increase from 1-10 is far more significant than the one from 10-20.
