I love how Distant Worlds emulate a complete civilian economy. It makes the galaxy feel alive, instead of it being just a playground for various fleet.
I wish it went deeper, with city-states like in Civilizations, space gypsies that sell you stuff or just buy/sell ressources to your planet, without you butting in.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I kind of don't like it.

It's better then in Civ 5 where everyone feels *mostly* the same, but with one really weird outlier (Venice) that's just too weird for the feel of the game. But Endless Legend feels really hard for me to get into at all by just how weird all the factions are.

Hell, the most normal factions in that game are basically the elves and vaulters, then instantly after them in normality you have the people who can move cities and the bugs who can't stop fighting everyone. It's kind of hard to get into or have diplomacy.

I actually have a really similar fear for Endless Space 2, especially because both the Vodyani and Cravers seem like they're always going to be fighting people and can't really play any other playstyle. That's my main issue with Endless Legend and Space 2; it seems like all the factions are a bit too shoehorned into their victory conditions and roles.

Endless Space 1 felt a lot better in that respect that most factions could do most things, they just did it in unique ways. The cravers and harmony felt like interesting weird factions that got to fit in because they were uncommon, not that every single faction had to have some genre-defying gimmick.

Playing Colonization makes me really mad.
Not because of the game. It has a really simple yet intuitive resource and supply chain model that makes trading feel natural and yet no one's picked up on it even though THE FUCKING THING IS 25 YEARS OLD

I can't see an update happening where there isn't always an objectively best ship to spam, or an objectively best weapon type.

I always start off with expansion and the group of 3 on the left of that tradition. Getting pop growth early is a huge part of snowballing, and you need that -33% to extra planet influence cost as a wide player because otherwise the planet penalty becomes prohibitive.

The first supremacy tech which gives you border push is good though, worth a shout as one of the first you take even if you don't finish the tree.

I was talking about the best ship by era. Initially it was all torpedo corvette fleets, but for a while after that TL battleships were king. Which is why they introduced spinal mounts and made TL completely worthless.

There are two (viable) defense types: Shields and armor.
The best weapon types are going to be whatever counters- you guessed it- shields and armor.

Choosing NOT to counter the defense types isn't an option either. If you can't overwhelm shield regen, you die. If you don't cut down on the 1000% health increase of max armor, you die. Countering shields is important and countering armor is MANDATORY.

Since there are only two things to counter you only need two types of weapons. Kinetics is a great all arounder that wipes out shields and plasma ignores armor.

Yeah, there's no hell-tundra or hell-ice terrain in the base mod, so if the Illians turn a tile to ice and then it thaws it might take a while for it to turn Hellish again. Illians have a terrain advantage over the Ashen Veil because they can go from Hell -> Ice in one step, while it takes two or three to get to Hell. Ice -> Tundra -> Plains -> Hell, or sometimes just Ice -> Grasslands -> Hell.

Basically what I'm saying is Mulcarn is our greatest hope and did nothing wrong.

I've seen it mentioned a few times on the stellaris forums and the wiki that hyperlanes are the oldest precursor construction built to assist in FTL travel, never found a source on it though. They do make a lot more sense then though, if they're in-universe an artificial construction by a race that never figured out other FTL methods.

That's kinda the plan they have for FTL in the future. They want to make hyperlanes the base FTL, remake wormholes to be naturally occurring things that require tech to access that will link 2 systems across huge distances with jump drive remaining the end game super FTL.
They haven't said shit about warp but I can see them reworking warp to be the shitty prelude to jump too, with less overall speed than hyperlanes but the ability to bypass fortified systems making warp a minor game changer in war.

I'll miss warp and wormholes if they do it but a lot of balance problems the game has do stem from there being 3 radically different forms of FTL. forts are over priced speed bumps. They don't get any shield bonus, can't cover each other for shit, and depend on high HP/armor that gets rendered irrelevant with plasma.

The only real value of a fort is to FORCE ships into combat. Combat mechanics are kind of derpy so you'll trap a fleet for weeks or months until they 1-shot the fort and get dragged into combat with the next one.

So since modules don't really matter stick with armor (cheap), a single long range gun (combat trap range) and empty hangar modules (cheap) for the rest.

Early game they are very good as spaceports are the best fucking defense in the game until they become useless very quickly.
Early-to-mid game they are STILL useful if you just do 2-3 HANGAR, FUCKING HANGAR defense stations, PLUS camp your fleet there. They will give you a significant edge to destroy people by turtling them out.
By the time you get fortresses they are already useless.

Well, it literally was a quirk rather than a bug per se. Unbidden were going all out whenever Tiyanki Space Whales happened to enter one of their portal systems. Deploying pretty much their entire fleet strength (Over 1.0 Mil) to take out 300~ strength space whale herds.

tl;dr, their moon formed from a collision, similar to how our moon was formed, except their planet was much larger than Earth. This resulted in two bodies, both able to hold an atmosphere. They developed on the planet, eventually establishing a few self-sufficient lunar colonies. When they nuked themselves into oblivion, the lunar colonies survived and formed a single government.

I have a custom system made, with the nuked homeworld, and two other habitable planets in the system that they have low habitability for (not helped by their non-adaptive trait).

Starting the game with Pre-FTL, gonna be a goal to get climate restoration and restore their 25-tile homeworld to its former glory. Should be fun.

I also have it set up to spawn a destroyed ringworld in a nearby system because their planet/species was actually an experiment to see how life would develop on a planet whose moon could also support life. But those forerunners were destroyed millenia ago

I never said it's not playable, fun or even good. I still play it occasionally too, especially when I only have access to an ancient laptop. It's the cornerstone of the genre for a good reason.
But the meme that it's still unsurpassed and the greatest ever is pure nostalgia circlejerking. There are plenty of old games that really are still unsurpassed (for example the first X-Com and Jagged Alliance 2 when it comes to squad managing turn based-tactics games), but MOO2 isn't one of them.
Sure there are certain things that even modern games could learn from it, but let's be realistic, it's pretty easy to name a game that does every single thing MOO2 does just much better, be it exploration, combat, research, ship design, diplomacy, scope, or anything else that's required for a proper 4x game.
In fact something like Space Empires IV does literally everything MOO2 does but much much better, but because it wasn't nearly as polished or accessible barely anyone even remembers it now.

Theres a mod for "Transwarp gate." Literally just makes wormholes have extra range per level and gives you wormhole tech if you didnt pick it from the beginning.

Max level Transwarp Gate allows for wormholes to the entire galaxy.

Why the fuck do jump drives not allow you to warp past closed borders?
I had to declare war on a federation just to be able to defend myself from some cunt on the other side of their borders who declared war on me and was able to pass freely through their territory.

Huh. That sounds like it may be a bug. I was able to jump past enemy's borders using Psi jump drives + zro in my third to last game. Make sure your fleet isn't set to evasive while jumping, though. If you're jumping into a known hostile system while evading it'll tell you to fuck off.

So the whole galaxy has federated in an attempt to stop the unbidden. They have 1 death fleet in the power range of 750k roaming around the north side of the galaxy. The good news is now we are all united and the unbidden have stoped beating me up to attack the north and east side of the galxy. I still think im fucked through.

I remember in one of my games how I left the Unbidden alone for a hundred years. It spawned on the other side of the galaxy next to an Knowledge Keepers Awakened Empire, Locust Plague, and Space Nazis (irony), so, who cares? When I finally decided to end them, I find almost no resistance. There was one or two fleets, the Dimensional Anchors were unguarded and I wen int unopposed. It was more of a mop up operation than a war at this point. I guess that they were fighting the Awaken Empire?

This is the first time theyve done everything all other games I played they broke. Funny thing is they arent consuming any planets anymore. Evytime they warp in anywere they panic and run back home because one of my allies sent an attack force so the unbidden apparently scramble everyship in the galaxy to defend even if the attacker is only like 10k strong.

(4 corbettes per destroyer in the early game)

But I think the optimal ratio changed long ago, so I will rethink it.
