What should I use for 2D mobile games? I heard unity is overkill and game maker cost like $600+ for extensions. Is there a more affordable alternative or do I just have to suck it up and learn all the higher level programming?

Why the fuck do companies go to such lengths to create engines like Unity without having a basic sprite editor

I mean what we have works but I'd prefer that shit to be interpreted
>>
>>175074131

by overkill I mean takes up too many resources for a 2D game - not overkill in the "building my own engine is hard" part.
>>
so when did you realize that you'll never make it?

The only thing game maker has over unity is the integrated sprite/tile system which saves a decent amount of time

No, it's not. At least in the genre I want to make games. It's like everything has been already done.

When I divided the number of "made it" devs in the past 10 years by the number of "attempted to make it" devs in the past 10 years.

That number was very close to 0.
But then I redefined "making it" to be having fun and learning and discussing gamedev, so now that number is quite close to 1 and I'm definitely going to make it.

When I first started game dev I started with pong, and then jumped right into my dream game.
Realized it was a lot harder than I ever imagined it would be. So I accepted it will probably take many years to get to my dream game. So now I just make small games and have fun with it.

Use a third party sprite editor. Sprite based games are for hobbyist entry level memers which is why they won't implement something like it.

This is a pattern of behavior that everyone notices about Ryan even outside agdg. He is a faggot who constantly craves negative attention because he knows how worthless he is as an artist, game dev and member of society, he craves abuse and negativity and is an open pedophile in a country that is extremely politically correct.

Like seriously if the planet itself could flick gogem off into space it probably would but there is already natural systems in place to make sure "people" like gogem don't get anywhere.

There have been some funny moments of him trying to shill outside of agdg too never forget this one because he just said his name like a tard expecting everyone on /v/ to know who he was.

>hey /v/, i'm Ryan Jake Lambourn, developer of webm-related game, Whip the Vote, but you might know me as the developer of Restricted-RPS or Social Interaction Trainer or Sprite Smash or The Slaying of Sandy Hook Elementary or V-Tech Rampage or maybe just know me as that Australian cunt from /vg/'s AGDG.

For a person who is currently receiving $0 in funding after making games for 5 years gogem has some very high opinions of himself. These yesdev videos are like he thinks he is at the GDC or something. He talks like he believes he is a developer who has already made six figures.

We are his target audience but for some reason he wants to pick fights. Nobody outside of agdg pays attention to gogem so all these views are from us. He antagonizes everyone he comes across and then turns around and asks for favors.

And then there was the begging for paying work from Aviary Attorney dev who he later tried to campaign against on twitter. Barricade the doors!
Finally getting around to reimplementing the generic content loader from last time. This has got a much more... loose affiliation of resources that should allow seamlessly streaming between rooms. Trying to represent this in simply content files is a little troubling though, so I might try to make syntactic sense of loading the next area offset by the trigger gateway position they both share. Then it might be simple enough in-file to do
DOOR: X .. Y .. TO "room_name" ;
which could affix the new room when loaded by lining up whatever DOOR it own that matches the original room.
I'm spending way too long autistically programming as usual. I'm doing this at work though so it's less suspicious just having Visual code open.

He's self-sabotaging. It gives him easy excuses for every failure he has (which is everything).

Unfortunately for him it's not going to get him any money. Even if it could he wouldn't deserve it after spending years trying to lecture devs here that there is no money in games. He honestly deserves to be poor and broke, begging us like this and being laughed at.

The exact same thing coincidentally is happening to youtubers. They're all crying for money and being ignored and laughed at because what are they really offering of value? The same question applies here.

>but if I don't charge money then I will be poor
You are poor. And you are charging money. This is called financial failure or failure to launch. Normally you retool your products and try to get sales. You don't give up and start asking for money while telling consumers it's really for their benefit so you can give them things for free because they are poor (not you).

Oh if only you knew how this comes across to people with brains you would really enjoy life on a new level trust me. You are a funny person.

Replying to your post from last thread:
480 pixels tall screen is a really awkward number to choose. It doesn't scale cleanly to either 720 or 1080. If you're gonna fuck over 720, at least choose something that scales nicely to 1080: 540 or just a little smaller.

The reason he tried coming back with another red cape character is because he has no creativity. Rotate's first game (never finished like everything else) was "rotateguy" which was going to be a VVVVV clone.

Then Theonian did the art for "Rotatevania" which never got anywhere so now rotate is using the red cape because drugs.

Pretty simple to deduce this fellas.

Is he in the discord or not?

Because rotate tried infiltrating the discord like 90 times with proxies and even with a hidden IP he couldn't stop being found out. He is that stupid and his personality is that hardcoded and shitty he gets found out every single time.

If this dev who is supposedly rotate can survive discord you can statistically be certain it's not him because he already failed 90 times to infiltrate.

The one with the antlers better get a charge attack.
Also, I'm not kidding about not answering the shitposters. Are you familiar with the term lolcow?

From Urban.
A lol-cow is a victim of a flame war who can't help but be milked for lols time and time again. They have a compulsive need to give up as many laughs as possible at their own expense despite themselves.
A good Flame Warrior can turn even the most dignified poster into a lol-cow, dehumanizing them every step of the way. For some unknown reason, the lol-cow cannot break the cycle and regain their humanity.
>I wish I could stop checking this forum topic, but the lol cows come back time and time again to be milked.

And what little effort they put in flaming you is compensated every time you bite and reply to a post. You could imagine that they have an Earth-shattering orgasm every time they see a (You). The punchline of the joke is whatever you say every time you respond. It doesn't even matter whether they actually are getting under your skin or not. 1st one looks too try hard on undertale and the 2nd one is a bit more inspired but barely so.
This is coming from someone who has a sprite that looks like fucking metaton so I'm not one to talk.
Still uninspired undertale with sub par music but I'm saying from my subjective likes in the TBRPG formula. Honestly with enough time I could manage a better ost but that's if you like quirky earthboundish sampled stuff since that's what I'd like to have. Except really good drum patterns. This guy was totally inspired by Lisa and he made his ost before his game. At least his demo runs but its barely 40min of game time, yet he says the demo on youtube pales in comparison of the content he has now.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OqDrHYYugw
I dont want a shitty story like undertale, I prefer a premise that's a lot more realistic (business oriented instead of cutesy les b frens and no one has to die) besides story is something to worry about once all the basic mechanics are in order, or at least in my case.

Is there any fucking decent algorithm for autotiling in game maker studio?

algorithms can be applied anywhere. whether or not you can implement it comes down to your own knowledge.

there is no such thing as an algo specifically for GMS
>>
>>175097916
I sorta meant like, an algorithm that takes GMS's drawbacks into account. For example you couldn't apply an algorithm based on 3D arrays to GMS because GMS lacks that functionality (though there are workarounds I guess).

Here's a tip. You can do collisions on background tiles.

Background tiles in Game Maker are a powerful tool that hardly anyone takes advantage of. You can create a nearly infinite number of background tiles and control them all with a single object rather than create 1000s of objects which will create lag.
>>
How do I design fuzzy AI logic?
for example, there's an obstacle in my AI's path.

They can either walk around it, or jump over it. Obviously generic A* tells the AI to take the fasted route.

However that's too predictable and can be abused. I want the AI to randomly choose between walking around it or jumping over it. Is it really as simple as giving it a random percentage? IE, 40% chance to jump over obstacles, etc
>>
>>175098902
>1000s of objects which will create lag.
>2d game engine
>lag

what did he mean by this
>>
>>175098996
That's not really a use for fuzzy logic. The random percentage is the simplest way to do it, you could improve on it by giving different weights to the options based on the type of NPC or just vary them NPC to NPC (so it's still sort of predictable, but not predictable enough to be really exploitable).
>>
>>175099129
Pretty simple. Starting around 2000 active instances of objects for every 1000 after you will see the game speed cut in half.
>>
>>175098996
>Is it really as simple as giving it a random percentage?
If you want it to be simple then yes, it's that simple. If you want the AI to be super complicated and base its decision off of current weather, number of previously eaten mangoes and its age, then you can do that too.

It's literally your own choice, man.

continued. Now imagine that every wall has around 8 object parts. 4 corners, 2 horizontal, 2 vertical. 2000 / 8 = 250 walls in a room before the game starts to slow. Now there are smarter ways to avoid that limit like making a 1px x 1px sprite then extending it to create your bounding box and using a custom draw event to generate the wall graphics. But it's even less taxing to just use background tiles.

Serious question: I have been working towards becoming a programmer for quite a while but my senior year of high school is about to end. Should I go to college to learn more? I don't think it's worth the massive debt I'd put myself in but I don't know how to explain that to my parents.

If you do it will be for the degree and you will need to challenge yourself as the curriculum will bore you (if you're already programming).

The debt is relative to how much you can earn with a degree out of school. Yes you can make money without a degree and stay out of debt but you can earn 3x as much with the degree and being in debt is not the worst thing in the world.

Don't ask 4chan what to do with yourself most of these people are straight retards.

it depends, a degree will help you get a job if you want to go that route. also school can get you in the mindset of doing actual work and having liability (provided you value your parents money, unlike most degenerate students)

if you don't want to be a wagie then there's no need, you can learn almost anything online. whether or not you succeed is going to come down to your own work ethic. a self employed programmer either sells software or does contract/freelance.

Because I'm being inconsistent. I'd just gotten out of the GL code again and had the word texture in my mind..
but I'm going to need to make a distinction between the two soon. A texture could include a whole sheet while a sprite is going to need instance information on current animation, etc.
Good catch.
More problematic though, was how I was trying to .Read "FileName" and parse it for Depth information.

It's a little obtuse right now, but the next goal is Content reference in file.
So you could define most of the props in their own files and reuse them instantiated in multiple areas.
>>

I usually just start working and google when I need help for a specific problem. I don't find copy/pasting code to be efficient because it might not be applicable to how you made your game.

Case in point:
https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/240300/how-do-i-create-a-split-screen-game.html

This jackass wrote a huge tutorial on how to add split screen to a UE4 game when all I really needed to know (and all the questioner was asking for) was the "add player" command.

>start drawing/3D modeling NOW because games are an art field. if you can't/don't want to draw then you need to get a job at a studio.
>don't fall into the trap of engine dev - focus on gameplay logic instead as well as honing you art skills.
>keep projects small (a year give or take) in order to build up a following, stop trying to make the next big hit.
>if you have no qualms with it and it doesn't offend you then look into adult games (basically any game just make it lewd), the barrier for entry is lower and you can make money sooner. no i don't mean patreon either. there's a huge misconception that people don't pay for porn, this is a lie.

None.

If you know C#, then learning Unity is as easy as learning any other API. All you need are the reference documents.

It's actually easier than most API's because it has superb docs + examples + billion Stack Overflow Q/A.

Also, calling it "Unity Scripting" is wrong. It's more like using a framework, hence "using UnityEngine, using UnityEditor" namespaces.

how did people do it before sites like itch?

well the guy that made xenotake sells it himself through paypal, the way he gets around paypals policy is by only selling half the files through it, and lets the other half be a free download on his site. that way he technically isn't selling porn on paypal.

there as another dev that only sold an unlock file through the paypal, and then let you download the game off his site.

You only need 25k a year to live on.

So lets do the math.

25k x 40 years = 1mil.

So you can retire by 30 if you have 1mil saved, and it'll be good until you're damn near 70 years old. Even better, that 1mil can be stored in high interest account so it'll grow over the years.

Most people who retire dont flat out stop working. They usually take on personal interests and still make money on the side, perfect for game dev.

Monster Girl Island dev can retire in maybe 2-3 years if they keep making that money.

25k x 40 is wrong. A given sum of money, invested, can last forever at some withdrawal rate. Assuming 4% withdrawal rate, 1 million will last FOREVER if you only withdraw 25k.

Withdrawal rate = rate of return - inflation.

7% - 3% = 4%.

Harmonic - Map.webm
3MB, 640x640px
I have two good news and one bad new.

Good news number one is that the map is in, it only shows areas you have visited and it expands to only cover the revealed area so it doesn't spoil the level's size.
Good news number two is that I added some new sound effects for rewinding and the map, you can watch the same video with sound here: https://streamable.com/m3dcu

The bad new is that the "fog of war" used to hide unvisited parts increases the object count by about 3x due to my lazy implementation, but that's a fix for another day.

Next up I'm going to make more levels and maybe some in-game control tips for DD14.

It plays when the blue bridge is in a wall, the idea is that you pin the blue boxes to the camera and use them to move through walls, you can play a slightly older version at awk.itch.io/harmonic if you are interested.

>A given sum of money, invested, can last forever at some withdrawal rate.

This is a completetly retarded concept.

Money has no value, wealth has value.

Money represents wealth at a decreasing rate each year due to inflation. You have to earn more tahn inflation to maintain a constant amount of saved wealth, due to the fact that your "earnings" (even though they may be below-maintenance) are taxed as income.

Also, the government lie about how low inflation really is.

So basically you have to earn 10% a year in order to earn 0%.

If you earn only 9% a year you are secretly earning -1%.

If you have 1 million, and earn 8% per year, and withdraw 4% of it, then you are earining 4% but then factoring 10% inflation you are actually earning -6%, and so although your amount will grow by 4% a year, the wealth that it represents is diminishing by 6% every year.

Eventually, over a long-enough time period your 1+ million won't even buy a loaf of bread. By which time it may have increased to maybe 3 million, great, 3 loaves of bread.

hey guys, asking for help again as I often do. always very appreciated

I have a function that needs to generate a couple of values (via lerp) based on the extent a control stick is off center.

unfortunately, using XInput I encounter a problem... entering full input on either the x or y axis yields a total value of 1 (1 on x and 0 on y for example). however, approaching a 45 degree angle gives a value near 1.6 (about .8 on each axis).

Does anyone know of a good way to get values for all angles on a scale of 0 to 1?

Do I just need to figure out all of the peak values and plug the value into some arithmetic based on the ratio of the larger number to the smaller?
>>
>>175132694
Normalize that vector bruh. Calculate it's length with c = sqrt(a^2+b^2) and divide your vector by c, it'll have a length of 1.

Game is dead. Twitter / Tumblr is pikopik or kopipo. Currently collabing with Weaver on guncat and shitting out jamgames
>>
>>175132927
thanks a ton. can you help carry me across the finish line with this one?

so I'm getting an absolute max value of about 1.62 (from like 3 minutes of crushing the stick all the way around)

assuming it's hitting the max value at a 45 degree angle, I get .81 and .81, square those and I have .6561 and .6561, add them up and sqrt that and I'm at c = 1.14... still more than 1.

Where in this process should the vector be normalized? If I just start dividing all my inputs by 1.14 I still have the problem of not receiving 'full' input when it is put purely on one axis

By the way, I want to pay you for your help. I'm way too much of a mooch with math related queries on here. Do you have paypal?

Sometimes you want a single straight object and you get gay green dildos, that's just how it goes.

>>175134040
Alright, I assumed that your axis were both at a value of 1 at 45 degrees. The trick with normalizing is that you calculate the length of your vector every single time, and you divide every single time, for every time you receive input. This way you get a direction vector that's always of length=1 in the right direction.
It's kinda weird your joystick's (what brand is it?) axis goes beyond 1, but in that case you can just clamp your lengths between -1, 1. You'll have the full range of motion.

I'm using a wireless xbox 360 controller with microsoft receiver

also, neither x nor y on the stick ever returns a value above 1.

my problem with the normalizing deal is that I need those lerped values to be at 50% if the player is only offsetting the stick halfway to its full potential. so if I normalized the input every frame I would maintain the direction but lose the magnitude of input...

am I missing something here?
>>
I'm lazy in all the wrong ways. Rather than learning to animate well, I want to make general procedural walk cycles. Any good resources on this?
>>
>>175135670
Dont think you understand lerp. Lerp takes a value t from 0 to 1 which is the step you want between 2 values a & b. So if t is 0.5 the lerp between a & b will be half the distance.

nauseating.webm

>>175135670
Yup, you're missing that you're saving the length of your vector at some point during the operation. So you can just clamp that length between 0 and 1 and remultiply your normalized vector by that. This way you'll get the full range bet 0-1 in all directions. At angles (such as 45 deg) you'll lose a little bit of sensitivity because you'll have some range on the joystick that isn't replicated, but I don't think that will be noticeable ingame. You don't even need any lerping for this.

And there was a guy who just couldn't wait for my progress, so here it is, finally got my kinematic object on spline coordinates working how I want it. Now I just gotta smooth those transitions. Sorry for the terrible material, it's doing some weird stuff. I do like the twinkling though, kinda looks like stars.

Half the fun of projects for me is the sound effect portion. You'd be amazed with what you can make with a microphone, audacity, and stuff lying around the house.

Take a ton of paper and record yourself crumbling it up. Then pitch shift it down and you have concrete cracking aka a generic build object sound.
