Persona 3 - the first one, formula feels fresh and is enough to carry an 80-hour story, even though the pace is snail
Persona 4 - the mystery angle is enough to compensate for the mediocre writing
Persona 5 - takes a while for the "main" story to get going, we're talking tens of hours. and in this let's call it "pregame" the storytelling kinda feels... boring? regular? it's usually: flash forward, learn who the target is > meet target, yep they're an asshole > steal their heart, target confesses to their wrongdoing at the last possible date. there's no major twists and turns. I mean the Sayuri one is but it comes at the very end and kinda from a different direction. the way the story unfolds is the same.
So maybe this is the first game where the're no crutch and the story had to stand on its own, but couldn't fully. At least the first part.

I really wanted to like Makoto. I love her thief design and I wanted to sympathize with her troubles. I overlooked her blackmail at the start of her arc and her terrible decisions with Kaneshiro, but what I really dislike is how she practically takes over as the party's leader right after she joins the group. She proclaims herself the "brains" and starts telling everyone what to do. She makes the decision to invite Futaba into the party without consulting the group, then decides when and how to socialize Futaba without consulting Futaba herself. It feels like she's completely sidelined the three party members to come before her.

I'm at the beach trip with Futaba. Does Makoto back off at all in time, or does she continue to hoard the spotlight and decison-making?
