Akechi would have stayed fucking delusional if he didn't learn that Shido was going to dispose of him soon. He never genuinely learned his lesson or became a good person. He also took the easy way out by dying rather than atoning for his crimes. And by the way, he died like a fucking bitch. He was killed by some pathetic cognitive version of himself and weak shadows which the phantom thieves could have easily mopped up themselves. His death was entirely his own damn fault as he had no reason to pick a fight with the phantom thieves in the first place aside from unwarranted hubris.

Adachi, by contrast, learns his lesson and tries to become a good person after his defeat. He also didn't kill anywhere near as many people as Akechi and you could argue that the first time wasn't even murder. More like manslaughter.

Kawakami is a must since even though her other abilities still cost money, the massage that unlocks from her Rank 10 item is always free. The Twins are also mandatory since their Rank 10 item lets you bribe Igor to ignore the level limit on fusing, which is a must-have if you're going into NG+ and want the Big Guy.

Sojiro, Shinya, Chihaya, and Yoshida are all useful and all give their full ability sets as their Rank 10 item, so that's also a good idea if you haven't maxed all of those. If you're running low on time, though, you probably can't see Yoshida anymore since he drops off mid-November. Sojiro makes SP trivial in the NG+, Chihaya makes it even easier to do a 100% Confidant run (as well as patch up any Social stats you're missing), Shinya makes killing shit easier (but isn't available until after you get Futaba), and Yoshida makes negotiating and money a lot easier.

The rest are down to personal preference. Ohya's abilities are useless in NG+ since you should be beating every dungeon in a single day anyway. Your party members all give you trash abilities on their Rank 10 items (except Yusuke who lets you copy any skill card). Iwai and Takemi both give you their full shop inventories, but they don't give you the discount which makes it all affordable, so you have to grind back to Rank 7 for those. Hifumi's Rank 10 item just gives you the ability that lets you flee with no wait, so that's kinda pointless.

Model guns are completely indistinguishable from regular guns in the metaverse, and getting busted with model guns means nothing for Joker's probation. Getting busted with a real gun is basically game over.

The ex-Yakuza origin doesn't mean he's likely to get anything good. Hell, part of Iwai's Confidant is that he has to make a bunch of convincing lookalikes because a shipment of real guns didn't go through.

Not only does P2 handle gay characterization better than the modern games. It handles characterization in general better than the modern games. What I adored about P2 is the characters had a ton of depth and weren't stuck in the whole "I'm a good misunderstood student" or "I'm the perfect student!" roles that we can't break out of. In IS, we had an ACTUAL delinquent, a girl dealing with her inability to fit in in pretty awful ways (enjo kosai and drug abuse), the MC was a habitual class skipper, and bad boy. And that's not even getting in to how messed up Jun was.

While I love the modern games for their charm and all, the protagonists and the party are all so squeaky clean it hurts. I just don't expect much nuanced representation of queer identities in them, because they are still married, and with good financial reason apparently, to a relatively squeaky clean anime image. Not that P1 and P2 didn't have anime influences, they clearly did, but the games were darker, with a tinge of psychological horror. P5 ending spoilers: P5 gets this a bit at the end. The scenes where your party disappears and hell is literally entering earth while the sky rains blood felt like old school Persona.

I think the moment I realize p5 was off and the worst modern persona was the school trip nothing interesting or funny happens and at one point the game says "we came all the way from Japan and we're doing the same thing we always do" AHHHHHHHH stop wasting my fucking social time with this stupid shit.
