I guess it depends how the planet got unified, you'd deffo expect planets that were conquered through brute force to be more xenophobic and as >>174602327 said, that combo would likely be Space National Socialists

I doubt it was broadcasted in my country. And my parents would always walk in when my brother and I were watching cartoons and anime and say something like "you're gonna have to grow up one day, you know".

Add a "supply lines" mechanic that has a maximum capacity. That way, fleets/armies can only support so many ships/soldiers.

You can take it a step further and make it a strategical element, too, by being able to defend and attack supply lines.

This can be said for nearly every anime when your definition of the male or female gender is as rigid and oversexed as in mainstream western media. Your fleet is supposed to be what your economy can produce and maintain at the time so why an arbitrary cap?

That mechanic doesn't exist in stellaris, what are you talking about?

Also it's an abstraction, almost every single mechanic in stellaris is an abstraction, it reflects how large a navy your society can support.

You do realise that being below or at fleet cap is not needed or even really what you should be doing, in almost every single game I'm above fleet cap constantly if I'm actually on campaign.

The main series is 110 episodes, and there's also about 50 episodes worth of prequel episodes and I think 5 movies, 1 of which is just a remake of the first few episodes of the main OVA series.

F Materialists/Militarist for ethics

You're traits are good but i would also add strong and solitary

Mining Guilds is spot on but i would go for Philosopher King instead of Technocracy since their society was a Monarchy.

Why the fuck does Stellaris absolutely fucking insist on making this retarded fucking pirate bullshit event happen at the beginning of every match? It adds literally nothing to this game. All it does is forces you to build a few additional corvettes and annoy you. I would understand it perfectly if this event had a point to it but having a stupidly weak pirate fleet appear out of ass destroy a mining post and then just disappear is annoying beyond any fucking reason.

It's point is to remind you to build a navy before you get rolled by a neighboring militarist and to give you a goody hut and basically give you something to do super early before you can reasonably war other empires, exterminate aliens or basically do anything but watch your minerals slowly tick up. If you lose a mining station to it then you didn't build ships in time and need to speed your ass up next game.

Of the corvettes you build to defeat the pirates, Anon. You just need what, 400~500 firepower to defeat them and their base safely. This isn't enough to defeat most spawns in system, nor to destroy a spaceport. Same to the "hurr durr it's to make sure you build a fleet to protect yourself from militarists", what the fuck are they going to do? They can't destroy your spaceport either that early.
>>

>>
>>174620096
I have literally never played a 4X game where pirates are anything but an irritation because they make no fucking sense.

They're always stupid shit like overly powerful and exist for the sole purpose of destrution. They don't give a fuck if they lose a thousand fleets as long as they destroy shit and that's exactly what pirates aren't about. Pirates are there to make money and to make money they can't risk a fleet to get a cheap ass freighter in bumfuck nowhere.

Pirates should be nuisance, but they shouldn't be a fleet wrecking, high-tech nuisance that you need to compete with at any point of the game.

They shouldn't contest you militarily, they should cause economic damage like they actually did. They should rob you, like they did.

If pirates in a game can match an actual empire in technology or power, then they are stupid bullshit that shouldnt be in the game.
>>
>>174620347
>You just need what, 400~500 firepower to defeat them and their base safely.
That's overkill, I usually just build 2 or 3 corvettes and have no trouble defeating them. Smash their tiny fleet, go back and heal ships, then go raid their base.

They'd be better if they persistently spawned in unclaimed territory every so often to go raid your mining stations, scaling up based on the nearest empires tech level but still with very small sizes that aren't ever a threat to even a half assed fleet, and then vanishing once eveywhere is in borders and effectivley being policed by an empire. Yes, I know, but if they risk losing a fleet, they won't go after some cheap freighter.

4X pirates usually are the exact opposite of actual pirates. They do shit that loses money, they do shit that doesn't make any money, they do shit that gets them killed and they exist when there aren't even any spaceborne civilizations or anything worth stealing or exploiting.

Why the fuck would there be a space pirate faction fielding thousands of ships in the middle of fucking nowhere in a galaxy that has a handful of civilizations that barely have gotten out of their own planet? Where the hell is the money in that? Pirates should co-exist with civilization and their level of power and technology should coincide with those of the surrounding civilizations or the pirates shouldn't exist at all in the game. Pirates aren't fucking scientists that come up with new shipwright techniques or casting techniques. They steal shit and use that shit to steal more shit. If you have nothing to steal, you have no shit to use to steal anything, so why be a fucking pirate?

Your ideal are pretty much Distant Worlds pirates. The pirates of Distant Worlds were already around as they are pretty much remnants of the precursors and thus has FTL and empires all start out pre-FTL. If you are playing as a pirate the goal is to pretty much get as much protection money out of the empires as possible while actively making sure they don't grow too strong so that you can continue using them as a cash cow.
You even had the option of becoming a 'pirate empire' if you managed to build up an underground presence on a planet strong enough to overthrow it and take it over.

Make your species deviant, keep ideological attraction low, hope that some pops randomly switch to materialist in colonies.

Also use private colony ships to increase the chance of pop flips.

Alternately, the Horizon signal event will completely flip your ideology, just do something like above to flip back.

Funnily enough nobody gives a shit that you turn conquered pops into hive zombies, so the best way to avoid being seen as fanatical purifier lite is to make sure you start research fast enough to get on the path to bio ascension before you go on a conquering spree.

Alternately vassalizing worlds that you're planning on bringing in the hive later.

Story, spoilered because it's mostly revealed through play and well, you only experience it once, it's always the same:
The pirates are remnant fleets from the previous galactic war and plague, subsisting from what little they managed to save, and raiding reborn civilizations. No civ in DW evolved and developed FTL on its own, they're all remnants too, rediscovering what they lost. Everything went to shit when the shakturi and their insectoid vassals tried to conquer the galaxy, opposed by an alliance led by the humans. Eventually, the Shakturi come back and you get to oppose them with the aid of ancient mechanical guardians, or you can join them. You can find a lot of ships leftover from that era while exploring, too. Along with World Destroyers.

The pirate faction has four kinds of pirates that they can be that reflects how you'd play them (one is balanced, one is focused on completing Black Market contracts, one is on completing Attack/Defend contracts and the last one is just being an aggressive 'thug' style). They get buffs to their type and penalties to other types except for the balanced pirate (who gets no buffs or penalties).
But the way it works isn't 'Team Pirate' vs 'Team Empire' - pirates can do whatever they like, just as the empires can. You can even set it so that more and more pirate factions pop up as time passes, and pirates that are annihilated from the game respawn after a set time (thus are effectively immortal). But work together? Well, maybe if the goal is the same (like say, bringing down an upstart empire that is trying to be a galactic police). But pirates do not own planets normally (unless they become an empire themselves by taking over a planet), so their income stream to maintain their fleet and stations are from protection rackets (to not only empires but other pirates as well sometimes), completing contracts put up by empires or other pirates or just plain raiding empire planets for goods and credits.

Really, it's hard to properly describe how the pirates work in Distant Worlds. Maybe the closest that can be used to describe them (especially if you set them to be pretty strong, smart and respawns after defeat) are to compare them to Capsuleers in EVE Online - an annoying menace to deal with for the empires but happy to make use of them to achieve their own goals, while the 'Capsuleers' often fight each over territory. Especially if that territory contains a fat but weak load of empires to run an easy protection racket on with the occasional beat down if they decide to stop paying.

lmao I picked an alien immediately what the fuck can a race led by a woman accomplish? >>174626963
U.N. and Commonwealth leaders drop like flies and don't last long at all, why does it matter?
>>
>>174625107
The -20% food thing is pretty harsh in the beginning, but if you're going the synthetic ascension route it stops being a problem. Judging from all the energy credit +% stuff you're getting it looks like that's what you plan on doing anyway. Further to that, if you grabbed Mechanist you can reduce the maintenance cost of robots to something ridiculuous in the end like 0.25 energy or something per pop, or even less if you have the Plentiful Traditions mod and grab the Cybernetic tradition path for even lower robot maintenance.
If anything though, that +10% research speed trait is OP as hell unless it comes with huge penalties to balance it.
Note that regardless of the number of traits you start out with when you start gene modding the game won't let you add on traits until you're back down to below 5 total traits unless you have a mod that also fixes this.

Otherwise just play how you like really. Sometimes you just gotta trait mod it up if you have a particular empire style you are envisioning because RP or whatever. Afterall, the AI also gets to use the same traits you're using from mods.
>>
>>174626963
To the virgins here, any reason will be lame, random and not sufficient.
>>
>United Nations and their main rival somehow managed to time colony ships to get to the same system perfectly simultaneously so the system just doesn't show an owner on the galaxy map
That was kind of unexpected. Also does the AI ever uplift normally? I know it's technically in personality setting but I've never seen uplifters do it.

Also forgetting to turn off advanced starts makes the game interesting, it seems like the advanced starts are mostly weighted so that they either go to the materialist personalities or complete assholes (iirc Hive Minds and Purifiers are both weighted at 100% chance). One of my more distant allies spawned next to an advanced start purifier empire and I'm seriously considering handing off 4 tightly packed systems I've been walling off because it would take forever for my core limit to get high enough to bother and they're far enough away behind the big three not asshole empires and me that it would give them a couple decades to rebuild and regroup.
>>
>>174626774
There's more smaller bonuses.
Smaller bonuses = less trait point costs
Less trait point costs = more traits
More traits = more smaller bonuses.
He could also do the other side of the coin and pick the expensive ones for large bonuses but less trait options, it's basic fucking balance my lad.
>>
>>174627012
>+250 energy storage capacity, +5% energy weapons damage
Both of these are exactly equivalent to techs you have to research. In fact that +5% energy weapons damage is an end game repeatable tech. So yes, it's overpowered.

And even then I didn't say to change it, I said I don't like it. You're the one trying to change something here and it's by trying to make the evil obinions go away.
>>
>>174628932
Energy >>> science > food >>> minerals.

You can't upgrade the resource buildings. Energy gives you a baseline of 10 energy per tile, with stacked bonuses to production you can produce like 16 energy per tile. It's ridiculously good. Science gives you an even 4 of everything, and food is pretty meh but useful for adding to your stockpile if you need it. Mineral production is so poor it's not worth the energy you waste on building the mines.
>>
>>174628932
Gradually shift food production to your sectors since there's no penalty for sectoring off farming worlds. Replace farms on your core worlds with energy or science buildings. I find energy is more valuable because energy put into sectors will just lose 25% of its product to the sector stockpile and be of no use to you.

Habitats are by far most efficient with energy, followed by science.

In case your food production goes negative due to a population surge (i.e. taking in a lot of refugees or integrating a vassal or suddenly getting a lot of worlds through conquest). It's an emergency buffer basically. Having a larger one means you don't have to keep production high. Personally though, I don't find it hard to keep production sufficiently high so it never goes red. I like the bonus to pop growth anyway.

Early game the starting weapon types are more or less even with each other. It's basically the only time missiles are on the same level because nobody has PD yet. And nobody has much shields either so lasers are actually pretty damn strong with their high accuracy and armor penetration. Granted corvettes have basically no armor so it's not much use. Just use the standard interceptor frame so you have 3 weapon slots and make sure you have more of them than the enemy.

Hive Mind
>>
>>174630628
Regular torpedoes are not that good. Energy torpedoes are immune to point defense and utterly wreck shields, but that's more useful late game when people stack shields to negate the power of plasma weapons, which shred through battleship and cruiser armor. Regular torps are still countered by DP. If you spam enough of them they will overwhelm the enemy's PD but the resulting damage isn't really worth the effort it would take to do that.
>>
>>174630628

Basic Torpedoes are only good against enemies who don't have PD, which can only be built on destroyers and larger. If you know your enemy doesn't have destroyers, torpedo corvettes can win most engagements.

Torpedoes, just like missiles and strikecraft, are hard countered by point defense. If your enemy is running mostly battleships and cruisers with heavy weapons then they won't have much PD and you can try running some torpedo boats.

>Reminder that Heinlein's federal navy was predominantly female
Why? I can understand if you just want to lazily say the genders are balanced in the space navy, but to make it MOSTLY women requires some sort of explanation for why that is.

Dune is another really feminist scifi novel, and it at least gives us an explanation for why women can become precognitive (even if it's flimsy) and a strong one for why the god emperor's army was mostly made up of women. What's Heinlein's reasoning?

Heinlein's reasoning was that women had slightly faster minute reflexes and better spatial recognition or some shit that allowed them to have the edge when piloting starships. Meanwhile in the MI, men are still men, stronger, faster and more aggressive on average.
>>
>>174631760
he was wrong in the case of women, they have shit tier spatial awareness, which is the most important in a 3d battlefield.
>>
>>174631760
But our current understanding is that men have better spatial reasoning than women, so that doesn't work. Never heard anything about reflexes, though.

On top of that, in the future strength and speed really aren't going to matter. Strength already mostly just matters for hauling your kit around considering 99% of combat is with guns or vehicles. And when's the last time you saw some soldier running around full speed at somebody? When we start using cybernetics and exoskeletons in war it's going to matter even less, because when everyone is so enhanced beyond human ability, and often in ways where real strength doesn't translate, the fact that soldier boy could lift 50 extra pounds over soldier girl won't matter for shit.

One also has to be aware of the safety and status discrepancy between naval and infantry roles. A naval role is considered much, much more prestigious than being a foot soldier, and is a much safer post at that. I don't see much reason for why men would choose specifically to join the hazardous and less respected job just because they're slightly better at it.

I'm actually both your replies, I replied once without reading your whole post.

Not necessarily sexist, its just literally Heinlein's make believe world in which women were the preferred choice for pilots for reasons stated. Men ended up in the MI because it was bottom of the totem pole on the required skill level for a Federal Service position (short of mining on the moons of Jupiter or testing new grenades with your face and other such fun activities).

However that didn't take away from the prestige of the Mobile Infantry at all. Quite the opposite, while civilians didn't have any understanding of it, the MI was one of the most highly respected branches of the Federation, and they all had a sort of US Marine Corps like camaraderie if you served. Likewise, the Mobile Infantry thought very little of every other branch, because they weren't the Mobile Infantry.

There was a quote that I'll paraphrase, where a MI was on leave in Paris and was visiting Napoleon's tomb. He had never heard of him. Someone who worked there told him Napoleon had been the greatest soldier that ever lived. The MI considered that for a moment, then asked, "Well, where were his drops?"

So it is like I said, the infantry were considered lowly and weak, and that's where the vast majority of men ended up? On Heinlein's part it's sounding more like personal politics over some scientific, if flimsy, justification.

Every branch of every military ever loves itself and thinks it's the best. It's public perception that ultimately matters in regards to prestige and respect. That the MI likes itself hardly matters to anyone else.

I should have saved it, we had a thread on /pol/ about woman in the army, with a lot of people(from brass to grunt, male and female) Basically, it's a fucking shit idea. here's the classic points
Man take stupid risk to protect females, we evolved this way, hard to change
Females are weaker and less aggressive, ie man must do more heavy lifting for them. Smaller stature also doesn't help whenever you need to jump or drag a shot m8 from the line of fire.
The whole bodily function/sexuality is fuckign terrible. A unit is 24/7 together, starting to build fucking ''changing'' place for woman is a waste of ressources. Also, woman can't piss from the window of a truck or shit in a crowded bag in a humvee
When they drop the physical need to accomodate women, all the men who did reach the previous standard resent them. It also allows the subpar male soldier that would have failed to go through

Never give sectors undeveloped worlds, they won't develop them properly. You should do a bare minimum of development first. Remove all tile blockers and then max out the build queue. Let the AI upgrade the buildings. Sometimes it can't even do that properly, but it'll do in a pinch.

Wide means you will have poor early game science because every new planet or habitat you colonize increases science costs, but once you get research labs built on those planets and habitats you will more than make up for the penalty and start shooting ahead in science. 3 or 4 research labs per planet is what you should aim for at a minimum. You don't have to literally build that many on each planet, just makes sure the number of total labs averages out to that at least.

There's diminishing returns on both penalty and laboratories, so at a certain point building more labs doesn't really yield much but at the same time adding more planets doesn't incur much more of a penalty. >>
>>174635185
They outrange standard lasers and have only slightly slower firing speed while doing more damage and having much, much higher armor penetration. Their armor penetration ranges from 40-90%. The are also extremely accurate, boasting a 75-85% accuracy range across weapon sizes. Their tracking is slightly worse than normal lasers and kinetics, but it's not too terrible. Plus, the targets you get plasma weapons for don't have much evasion stat so it doesn't really matter.
>>
>>174634887
Evasion has a hard cap now and tracking exists so it's less OP. Pretty much only corvettes really benefit from it, destroyers to a lesser degree, but corvettes are so squishy that anyone uses small weapons with high censor upgrades is going to have sufficiently high tracking to negate most of their evasion.

What would you modify with these Humans I have as my main species? They're supposed to be sciency types. I originally gave them

+Talented
-Weak

Should I bother removing Weak if I don't really use them for minerals or armies?

What traits would you give them?

Out of the Natural Phys/Soc/Engineers, which of the three is usually better?

If it helps in the decision at all, my core Terranova colony has +20% physics research, and it's flooded with laboratories (respecting tiles for engi and bio) but mostly phys, and with a science edict.

Should I only modify my core world humans, or should I invest in modifying absolutely all humans in the empire? (40 planets)

Do you bother modifying your secondary species as well?

They really need to do more with rulers. As is, it's like you have one of your leaders vanish completely from your empire and you can't interact with him at all until he leaves office. That or he dies and you just lose him completely. Make there be a way to oust him from office with a political coup, or for an immortal synth ruler have him want to retire after he's reigned for at least 50 years, with every 10 years after that increasing the chances that he will want to retire more and more.

For new colonies, I often gene mod them to have rapid breeders so they can fill up the colony that much faster.

Missiles are trash.

The best fleets are:
Cheap Corvettes with energy torpedos. No armor, shields or sensors.

Point defense destroyers with plasma
Battleships with giga cannons and kinetic batteries
>>

>Do you bother modifying your secondary species as well?

I modified species in an older version to give them better habitability so they had better happiness. My Individualist empire was extremely multicultural and planets would fill up with pops that had like 20 habitability somehow.

I also modded species to remove Deviant because remove deviancy reeeeeeee.

Eventually I ended up with so many different species that it was very difficult to keep track of them.

Beyond that, I didn't feel the need to minmax the other good traits, although having an Energy Planet with Thrifty pops makes it worthwhile to forego the tile bonuses, same for Industrious for mining planets (especially with those +25%/+50% mineral type planets) and now Agrarian if you've got Agri-worlds. You could also stack Natural [science type] with Intelligent if you've got worlds that get those +[science type] bonus.

If you're relying on natural pop growth, consider also adding Quick Breeder if you want.

You get the tile yield, then the building yield is stuck on it and then any other bonus is applied so it doesn't matter.
>>
>>174638678
you can upgrade networks up to 3
plants go only to 2
assuming its not your capital
generally, its better to plop networks on higher yield tiles. plop plants on empty/food/energy tiles
>>
>>174637835
Gigacannons are not really worth it. Kinetic artillery is better. Also I like having another destroyer class with medium plasma and small auto cannons for sweeping up corvettes and laying into other destroyers.
>>
>>174638286
The processing plant gives itself the bonus, so even though T2 is produces 4 minerals, it actually produces 4.8 on a bare tile. If you build it on a +2 minerals tile, it will make 7.2 (1.2*(4+2)). Putting a T4 mining network will only have it produce 7 minerals. If there's a processing plant somewhere else on the planet, it will make 8.4, obviously.

Always put down Processing Plants on any planet if you intend to have it mine anything.

Always put down an Energy Nexus on a planet. Not only will it make Unity, but you will also have a capital building making energy, and these two combined (plus adjacency bonuses from the capital and the +20%) can make the planet self-sufficient for energy.

All capital buildings (except Reassembled Ship Shelter) give adjacency bonuses to Energy, Minerals, or Food (but only one at a time, depending on the building build next to it)

Planetary Administration (5+ pops) gives +1 adjacency bonus
Planetary Capital (10+ pops) gives +2 adjacency bonus
Empire Capital-Complex (15+ pops, capital only) gives +3 adjacency bonus

The adjacency bonuses trigger on any building that produces the resource, so building a Frontier Clinic next to a capital will give the bonus, as will a hydroponic farm. An Energy Nexus will get the +energy bonus as will a Power Plant. Same for minerals.

I'd build a nexus on a minerals-only planet because of the unity it produces and because the capital produces energy too.

(6 energy from capital + 6 energy from nexus + 2 adjacency bonus) *1.2 = 16.8 energy (versus only 6 with just the capital).

Whereas Mining Network 4 instead would make 8.4 minerals (assuming a processing plant).

10.8 energy and 2 unity at an opportunity cost of 8.4 minerals is worth it.

On a +25% minerals world, the opportunity cost is 10.15 minerals, which I think is still worth it (but you can disagree, that's fine). On a +50% minerals world the opportunity cost is 11.9 minerals and I can see that being worth 10.8 energy and 2 unity, but I'd still opt to not take it.

Almost always. On some planets there's no way to put down the capital without affecting a science tile or two. It's just a cost/benefit analysis at that point: is missing out on 4 science worth the +2 minerals (or whatever) adjacency bonus? On a science planet, maybe not!

>>174641324
Hiveminds are dull as fuck. Something easy would probably be Materialist, Xenophile, Egalitarian. Bonuses to research from materialist, xenophile for easier relations with other empires, and egalitarian for happier pops and more influence from factions.

For a race traits, intelligent and talented sync up well with Materialist ethos, as does Thrifty. If you have to take negative traits to get the ones you want, then Sedentary or Wasteful are probably your best options for minimal penalty.

>>
>>174641754
RTS stands for Real Time Strategy. Meaning there's no turns. Players and/or computers all move at the same time with no taking turns to move stuff. Turn based is exactly what it sounds like: only one player/computer can move per turn, and there's generally a finite number of "moves" you can take in a turn due to limitations on unit movement and build points and so on.
>>
>>174642020

Turn based games are a lot more casual and accessible because they are much slower. It allows players to carefully think out their movements and plans without being rushed. But in an RTS the clock is always ticking and every second you spend doing nothing lets your opponents get ahead of you. That's why RTS games can be played competitively (see: Starcraft) while turn based games are more often played individually, since it would take ages for a full turn rotation with an all-human game.

Stellaris is a pseudo-RTS. It's real time, it's strategy, but it's definitely in the 4X camp because it has pretty equal emphasis on the exploration, expansion, exploitation, while traditional RTS games the focus is always on the 4th 'x': extermination.

Age of Empires II is still one of the premier examples of an RTS game. It's old, but got an HD release on steam a little while ago and it's glorious. If you play it you will see what I mean. Games are direct competition against computer or human opponents where you are trying to crush them, most often by destroying their units and buildings, but there's other methods for winning as well. Combat is still the dominating force of the game, and winning pretty much depends on having a strong military even if you don't plan on conquering your foes to win, because they will surely be trying to conquer you to prevent your relic or wonder victory unless they're trying to rush a wonder of their own.

Other classic RTS games are Starcraft, Warcraft 2 and 3, and Command and Conquer series. RTS is kind of a dead genre though, there hasn't really been a decent RTS game since Sins of a Solar Empire and that one is still lacking a lot of the flare of the classics from the 90s and early 00s.

No problem. But I would give a definite recommendation to AoE2 and maybe Sins of a Solar Empire if you want something spacey like Stellaris but more geared towards straight up combat than Stellaris is. One thing I should mention that makes Stellaris a pseudo-RTS is that all the combat is automated, once a fight starts you can't control the fleet or any of the units in it, but in pretty much all RTS games combat is micromangeable and in fact you are expected to micromanage your units in combat to great effect. That's where a lot of the skill in RTS games comes from, that and memorizing build paths and upping your User-Actions-Per-Minute, but the last two are really only important in competitive PvP matches. Unit micro is valuable even against computers. AoE2 has limited micro but it's a good game to practice on, while SoaSE has more advanced micro with units that have special abilities you can use in combat. With AoE it's more about positioning and knowing when to take units out of a fight to keep them alive, using high ground and fog of war, etc.
