I still don't understand what happened. The AI in stellaris jumps between the general shit for these types of games, to mediocore, but during that last push it felt like the AI just went into absolute HAL9000 mode. Was actually fun to lose, because before that winning was super easy overall.

Time for a new game.

Well, I don't try to take over the galaxy. I'm just going with the flow and doing what I think my empire would be actually doing as a real empire.

>>174146176
This is the latest I could find. Some time after this, my empire fell apart. At first I created vassals from the sectors, I had to disband much of my fleets, got into wars, vassals broke away and then I basically took over my old areas by force again and crushed my age old nemesis(Jhabbanids in the lower right corner) and that's when I quit the game. It was just some years from the year 3000.

Before this screenshot, I lost half of my shit to the Prethoryn. The entire southern portion of my empire is barren of habitable planets and it used to be full of them until the Prethoryn came along.

>>tfw it's still too fucking influence-expensive to rearrange the population

Why are you trying to resettle your populations after gene modding?

The point of gene-modding is so that the population of every planet as the right traits for the type of planet it is.

You leave your home planet species blank so you can send out generic pops to each new planet THEN you gene-mod them so new pops grow up as the new type. For existing planets you just gene mod the entire 10-25 population to get it over with even though it takes longer.

I wouldn't even bother putting rapid breeders on since it's only a 10% bonus but costs a trait point.

You make every planet a single type planet (Farm, Mine, Energy, Science etc), then gene mod each planet with the right traits. You shouldn't even need to use resettlement.

>How do slavers move their slaves around to get the best out of them?

I never move my slaves around.

A slave species can still colonise new planets on their own. They can still create defensive armies. You just need to setup their species rights to do it.

Use slaves effectively by making single purpose planets (which are the best thing to do regardless of your ethics, because you can use edicts more effectively), and not making slave planets with science or unity.

My current game I'm using slaves. My two main slave races were different planet types to me, so I would use either my own race, the arctic slave race, or the desert slave race depending on the planet type.

The slave races were all set to battle thralls because this is the best combination of mineral & energy production and I didn't have enough main race planets to use for energy. The other types are all worse for energy production. It also gives them better army stats.

If you had same type as your slaves you would use your own race for energy & science & unity then a slave race set to Chattel Slavery for Mine & Farm planets.

Every energy planet gets thrifty modded in.

Mine planets get Industrious and Strong/V Strong depending on trait points (mine were already strong). I also use one of these planets as an army planet, as I conquered the slave race first and their home planet had a military academy.

My home race was already intelligence and had engineer bonuses so I don't really need to modify them.
>>
>>174147339
No, originally because of the range of wormholes it was easy to build wormholes on the other side of dumb alien fags and just hop over them. Now that borders are open until closed instead of closed until open wormholes are much less useful compared to the FTL types that don't require a building to use their FTL.

> Copying from the ded thread
The Kzer-Za are driven mad by a ravenous Xenophobia. It literally drives their entire culture and everything they do. In fact the Kohr-Ah are also fanatic Xenophobes. The Urquan are an ancient species and their history is one of falling from grace. Both sub species would both fit as fallen empires with a single fanatic xenophobe trait.

The Ur-quan ritual doctrinal conflict is basically a slant on the "War in heaven" front. The Kzer-Za want to trap all species on their homeworld so they will never hurt UrQuan ever again. The Khor-Ah want to turn all other species into dust so they will never hurt UrQuan ever again.

The former have a severe weakness in military power so they compromise by allowing other species to join them as "battle thralls" I.E. vassal states. All who refuse get shunted to their homeworld and shielded so they won't rebel against the "good guys" in the doctrinal conflict. Fewer species deal with the Kzer-Za because no one ever lives to tell about them.

Probably best to pick a weak empire, box them in and then just go to war with them and set very, very high warscore goals. Then just step in once and smash their fleet.
You can them step back and just have your 2nd fleet keep an eye on their systems. Don't invade or anything. Let them build up tiny little corvette fleets and watch as they smash against your fleet time and time again.
It'd take decades for the warscore to make them surrender, unconditionally.

This is all purely theoretical.

My first game of Stellaris was amazing like that.

I was in a peaceful part of the galaxy so I had barely any fleets. My neighbors were basically just one FE and a bunch of empires that I was in good terms with.

The Prethoryn appeared right next to me suddenly. I managed to defeat one Prethoryn fleet with heavy losses to my own shitty and hastily assembled low-tech space boat clusterfuck.

Then my bros backstabbed me and attacked me when I was at my weakest, though they got fucked by the Prethoryn when they entered my space.

I was scrambling to get anything to get me tech faster because I had shit for weapons technology. I researched the dangerous AI tech. The FE got riled up about it and attacked me. I lost my only fleet, which was defending the capital.

Prethoryn took out the capital and everything in the system after the FE left. I was defenceless so I lost most of my shit.

Pic related. That's my last space port and those planets are all I had left at the lowest point. I managed to work out a fleet of battleships with that.

Prethoryn were ultimately beaten back from my territory. I didnt chase them to my neighbour's territory. I had like, 7 out of the 20+ planets after reclaiming the lost territory.

When I got my decimated homeworld back, I went full military mode and did everything I could to get the tech and fleets to get back at the FE and my backstabbing neighbour.

Got back on my feet, surpassed my former bro, the backstabbing neighbour in everything and decimated them and finally, I got all my fleets together and turned my gaze towards the FE that caused the fall of my homeworld. I formed one massive fleet called Fury of Mother Earth and set it out to the FE's system. Made sure the Fallen Empire stays Fallen and forcibly relocated them out of the ringworld to the shittiest planets I could conjure and moved my own people to their ringworlds.

After the FE fell, it was 2700 and I quit.

What if each station forced an invading fleet to split? If you had two, then an enemy fleet would be split in half and each half goes to a separate station.
If you have EIGHT, like lovely anon, then that fleet would be divided into many, manageable, bite-sized chunks.

Would definitely add an extra layer to strategy. And force some scouting.

The reason for the large amount of snares is that when a prethoryn fleet jumps in, they instantly destroy the snare that caught them, and if they are followed by another fleet, they will end up warping in a different snare, so if I am engaged with the first fleet, hopefully it will take longer for the other to join in. How do I get better at Stellaris anons? I've played almost 200 hours but I frequently lurk this general and you guys are far better than I am.

I have a couple of specific questions:

In the early game, is it better to 'forward settle' or settle as close to you as possible?

Again in the early game, is it better to claim territory by colonising or by building frontier outposts. In the same vein, is it better to have as many planets as possible as soon as possible, or to go 'tall'?

What do you guys do to prioritise science (again, particularly in the early game) whilst also balancing the needs for energy/mineral production and fleet building?

Probably quite a general question, but how do you prioritise available researchable techs? e.g. always lowest cost, always military techs etc.

Fleet composition. What do you guys go for? At the moment I tend to have two types of each class of ship, one for 'heavy hitting' and one for either point defense, holding fighters or hitting smaller ships. This is mainly because I have a semi-autistic naming convention for my fleets though.

Possibly in the same vein as the fleet composition question, but what weapons do you guys use? I tend to try and have a mix so that each ship has something like Kinetic, Plasma and Missiles (avoiding too much specialisation). Is it better to specialise ships to have all Plasma, all Kinetics etc.?

Main 4X games I play are Civ V or Endless Space, so I may even be asking the wrong questions. I do have Utopia and Leviathans DLC.

I love shit like that.

It always reminds me of one Aurora game that i had.

I geo-scouted entire Sol, grav survey discovered one Jump Point and i decided to take a look.
I had no military beside poorly armed exploration ships and some PDC's that were build on Earth.
And of course i run across normal hostile aliens on the other side of the Jump point.
There were four of my exploration ships vs several cruisers, FAC's and destroyers of their.
They destroyed all of my ships and proceeded to head to Earth... just in time for my oversized Missile PDC's finished building.
Ensuing battle was fierce as fuck, i lost all of my shipyards, several dozen milions people and some of the PDC but ayyylmaos got buttfucked and never came back to Earth.
They colonized and dropped troops on Mars, Titan and some comets and started roaming the entire Sol except the vicinity of Earth.
It took me more than 15 years to strike back, build good offensive ships and then push Alyums out of Sol and fortify JP to their system and they just kept coming every year with hundreds of small ships.

I tried to replicate this but failed so far :(

I would love to do in Stellaris, shit like Lycerius did in CIV2.

I've only finished one where I hit a victory condition. I tended to get bored pre-Utopia at about year 2450 because the endgame crises were easy to smash quickly/broken and the warscore system meant taking over other large empires took ages.

Looks like both of those issues are fixed now though, which is good. I had the Unbidden in my first post-Utopia game and they wiped out literally half of the galaxy (including the most powerful empire) in 15 years.

>In the early game, is it better to 'forward settle' or settle as close to you as possible?

Ai will try to box you in. Reach as far out as you can while still maintaining a single a cohesive border. Outposts help with this and planet quality very much does matter. your planets will always out produce the space around them

>Again in the early game, is it better to claim territory by colonising or by building frontier outposts. In the same vein, is it better to have as many planets as possible as soon as possible, or to go 'tall'?
Make a choice early on if you want to go tall or wide. Both are vialble and effective (Despite what some uneducated anons will tell you). If you take colonization as your first tree, then it halfs outpost costs so that can be an effective method of expansion. Otherwise I'd say stick to planets.

>What do you guys do to prioritise science (again, particularly in the early game) whilst also balancing the needs for energy/mineral production and fleet building?
First and foremost is to get your economy going and have a steady flow of minerals. Unless you're building tall, science is not going to be super duper important to you. Its the absolute last thing I focus on when building wide.

>Fleet composition. What do you guys go for? At the moment I tend to have two types of each class of ship, one for 'heavy hitting' and one for either point defense, holding fighters or hitting smaller ships. This is mainly because I have a semi-autistic naming convention for my fleets though.
You always want a surplus of corvettes in comparison to other ships.

Missles are hated because they get shut down by point defense later on.

>>
>>174149360

>In the early game, is it better to 'forward settle' or settle as close to you as possible?

Forward settling is superior if there are +20 tile planets out there with beneficial modifiers to minerals, credits or research. Playing wide means it's harder to defend all your areas, considering the way it is atm is to make a single good fleet.

>Again in the early game, is it better to claim territory by colonising or by building frontier outposts. In the same vein, is it better to have as many planets as possible as soon as possible, or to go 'tall'?

Both, but be sure to colonize good planets. If you colonize every single shitty planet you manage to find it kills your research in the long run.

>What do you guys do to prioritise science (again, particularly in the early game) whilst also balancing the needs for energy/mineral production and fleet building?

Society in the early game, rule of thumb is two basic science labs per planet or five pops. Specialize your planets into whatever field, easier to use edicts / governors / scientists / special buildings that improve the output.

>Probably quite a general question, but how do you prioritise available researchable techs? e.g. always lowest cost, always military techs etc.

Lowest cost beneficial techs early game, but you'll have to prioritize in the long run.

Last time I sent it home to research I just got another version of the grand fleet edict.
>>
>>174149360
>In the early game, is it better to 'forward settle' or settle as close to you as possible?
I wouldn't go more very far out from the home system for your first few colonies.

>Again in the early game, is it better to claim territory by colonising or by building frontier outposts. In the same vein, is it better to have as many planets as possible as soon as possible, or to go 'tall'?

If the planet is good, then colonisation.

More planets = more borders = more resources = more pops = more production but worse tech & unity generation.

That said, I would say getting 7 planets is good, as that will give you a homeplanet, 2 energy planets, 2 mine planets, 1 farm and 1 science planet.

>What do you guys do to prioritise science

I build a science planet if I think the techs I'm going for are going to take too long.

>Probably quite a general question, but how do you prioritise available researchable techs? e.g. always lowest cost, always military techs etc.

The longer you play the more you'll figure out what "core" techs are.

I would say the most important techs are:
* farm, minerals & energy buildings
* ship power modules
* core ship weapon modules (ie, laser or railguns)
* shield modules
* research speed
* naval capacity modifiers
* border range

I know that's like 75% of the techs in the game but those are the pretty core techs.

What you pick depends on what you're giving, how quickly you can research it and how important it might be.

>Fleet composition. What do you guys go for?
Corvettes & Cruisers will burn in on the enemy and get up close very quickly.
Destroyers & Battleships will hang back and fire at longer ranges.

1 Battleship- all long range
3 Cruisers - half long range, half flak (once you have it)
6 Destroyers - 1 long range, 1 flak
12 Corvettes - neutron/proton torpedos

>weapons
kinetic long range weapons, medium plasma cruisers, flak artillery, missiles are a meme never use them EXCEPT proton/neutron torps.
>>

Depends on the war and the economic structure. For Romans, whose objective to war was getting slaves and booty, it was beneficial. To medieval kings, whose purpose was getting land and taxpayers, it took ages to pay itself back and was often ruinously expensive, resulting in increased taxation for the peasantry. In the modern context, war is completely divorced from economic reality due to being fueled by debt on a fiat currency, making war more like corporate welfare than anything else.

I'm new to Stellaris, went with spiritual xenophobic militaristic nation first and I noticed along the way psychic abilities were discovered as rare technology, but I can hardly see any advanced biological or synthetic technologies emerging. Are cybernetics even possible in the game? Enhancing race with synthetic stuff, or maybe gene changes, or even total shift to artificial bodies(or even virtual only like endless space)? It seems like I'm only getting some random buff technologies right now, and I'm already like at half the galaxy with 3 vasals and lots of planets colonized. With observation post I saw ability to integrate with natives through some gene tech so I tried to rush biological ones be able to discover it, but still most of them were very lackluster, some habitability or terraform/tile removal ones. Does it just take such a long time to get to the most interesting techs, or were I just unlucky with tech rolls? Or maybe it's just spiritual trait that hinders that and psionic is way to go?

New-friend questions incoming
Please advice

1. I tried hacking the Infinity Machine as a Fanatic materialist, but I failed. Do i get a second chance at interacting with it, or should I just destroy it by force?

2. These grey guys are a faction I liberated after a defensive war versus hostile Spiritualists. They ended up joining the Federation I was a part of. Is there any way to bully them into vassalization/integration or warring them when they're part of my federation, but no one else wants to vote them out?

It's really getting under my skin. Apart from the little blob interruption action they got going on, they also built a frontier outpost further up in the screenshot that is useless for them and they never bothered to delet.

Also, if I'm part of a Federation I didn't create, I still win alongside with everyone, right?

It was actually kind of cool how my RP-descended from lost colonists-empire spawned so close to all the other humans and also other materialist/egalitarian/peaceful/xenophile ayys. The federation forming up to be some sort of interstellar "good guy" force defeating the evil authoritarian/militaristic/spiritualist ayy's has made for some really fun RPing.
>>
>>174153856
War probably fucked them. It was that nationalistic pride that rebuilt the country. The possibility of going to war more than actually going to war.
Getting ready for a war that never happens is probably the best way to keep everyone productive. As long as they keep thinking the war might happen and don't start to stagnate.
>>
>>174154242
Synthetic/A.I is a nope with Spiritualism.
Might be possible, just really really low chances.

The gene thing should be fine though, just keep researching stuff like leader lifespan etc

>>
>>174154242
Psionics and synthetics/cyborgs are mutually exclusive. You can't be both, for some reason.

If you're spiritualist, you can't be a cyborg.
>>
>>174154242
The ethics your government chooses decides a lot of things. As a spiritualist, your polar opposite is materialist. You must be a materialist in order to take full advantage of robotics. Also, something a lot of new players don't get is that while the tech is random to a degree, its a randomness you can guide. For example, if you grab an industry scientist and slot him on engineering. It weights the stack so you will be more likely to get robotics

Disclaimer: I'm in the Summer of 1939 during the book

Absolutely not, by the time the National Socialists took power Germany was out of its economic crisis and things were looking up austerity worked.

When the Nazis got into power Hjamar Schact spent the following 5 years coming up with convoluted ways to maintain Germany's trade balance in the midst of rearmament and autarkic endeavors (Hitler's belligerent attitude to the Western Allies, who were germany's creditors, didnt help either).

Some things were really breathtaking, like the rapid expansion of the aircraft industry and IG Farben's artificial fuel/rubber technologies getting the investment needed to get out of the experimental stages, but the normie german suffered for this in declining living standards, declining wages, saving regularly getting conscripted to maintain the Reich's balance of payments, and finally losing ~8% of the population due to the ensuing war.

Weimar germany was degenerate af but the nationalist liberals (ie libertarians) would have rebuilt the german empire as an economic power, which is what it is today.

the world wars just depress me. what a waste.
>>
>>174154402
Now I heard you can unlock Psionics as Materialist, but you need a researcher with the Psionics trait.

Got it on one playthrough but finished the game before seeing the research come up, so can't confirm if fact.

1. So I should destroy it, right?
2. They're not my protectorate. They're independent, I never got the option to vassalize even after I liberated them from their previous master (I know, what a meme). What do?
3. Okay

I'm actually even considering just splitting from the federation and maybe making things more interesting by having to defend versus possible aggression on part of my previous allies if I decide to war this grey guy.

Music / Mod recommendations? The mod recommendations is in dire need of updating.

I have
LEX
Diverse Rooms
Lilm - Rei Ayanami
Reduce Aura Graphics
UI Overhaul 1080p
Extended Vanilla Clothes
Binary and Trinary Systems
Animated Serpentoid Portraits

plus my own synthwave custom music mod which adds some tracks similar to the existing soundtrack, for you know, more variation. Also taking music recommendations, particularly I'm interested in tracks which have "voiceovers" from old sci-fi movies or narrations of sci-fi books, such as this example here in my playlist:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzw1fSp4ecU&t=3m21s
or like
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dxBzJiF2Rw&t=16s

I feel they add something neat to the game. Some voicovers also feel like they're "radio broadcasts" or something in my empire. If only we could select some tracks for wartime, peacetime and possibly moments where things may escalate into a war, that'd be cool.
>>
>>174155012
Again, Stellaris definition of egalitarian is any society in which anyone can rise to a rank of power regardless of their birth. Nothing is more true for this than a corporation.
>>
>>174155020
Can confirm.

Taking Discovery first and rushing Planetary Survey Corps is fucking NUTS. After that, you can dip into whatever else you need and finish Discovery later.

There's a chain of shops in the UK that has a business model based on providing services to the individual store's local community, distributing portions of it's profits to the people who shop there or supporting charities, generally being a moral business.

1. It's subjective (I think it's a bit unfair, very ineficient as the importance of competency is diminished for something completly useless and in practice it often leads to incompotent high born individuals to get jobs they don't deserve)
I don't think it's EVIL sure but there a lot of reasons to dislike it, and obviously it's contradicting with what some people think should be society.

The idea was that the goa'uld leaders had no actual understanding, or care, for military tactics. As far as they were concerned, war was a game. They would just hurl their followers at each other and giggle. They never bothered training them in combat tactics.
So, when humans came along, the goa'uld armies were woefully unprepared to fight an enemy who took cover and used strategy.

The whole "this is a weapon of terror. it is designed to scare your enemy" vs. "this is a weapons of war, it is designed to KILL your enemy" thing.
Staff weapons vs. p90s, if you missed the episode or having memorised everything from watching eternal reruns on sky.

Bullets pinging against the armour was just a day-time tv thing. Can't show blood.

You're definitely right about the gates in the middle of nowhere. It made no sense. The gate should surely have a whole temple built around it, every time. And it should always be full of guards and priests, not because they expect an attack, but because it's a ceremonial thing and there should always be people standing around it.
>>

>Doesn't change the fact that when Goa'uld mooks are shot at, the bullets seem to harmlessly bounce back.
Only in first episode, after that SG personel started carrying AP rounds.
Its even mentioned somewhere.

>And also the fact that none of the explored planets has sicknesses/parasites that could be harmful to the humans.
Typical SF convention.

>Or the fact that Goa'ulds love putting them gates in the middle of fucking nowhere instead of putting them in the middle of their base surrounded by 135,135 turrets.

Yeah because Goaulds are established as a military geniuses and not at all megalomaniac parasites that are simply proficient in terrorizing helpless populations and fighting other noobs.

Pretty much all of the system lords had gone completely insane. They wouldn't accept learning anything.
Baal was a rare one. And Apophis, although originally a typical insane goa'uld, was forced to step up his game due to all the shit Teal'c threw at him. He grew.

The Tolan were more than just pussies. They were arrogant pussies who assumed they were already at the top, so they dismissed all threats.
They were probably more like a fallen empire. Except nothing could wake them up. Not even when their world got invaded and then, later, pounded into shit by orbital bombardment.

A bug? In a Paradox game? Perish the thought!

mmm, I'm so dumb sir, I should have thought of that, I do deserve spanking, but please sir, be gentle
>>

It depends on how thick they are but yes ringworlds are pretty silly.

Just be thankful that space elevators aren't something you have to build for every planet.

you could also make one that's planet sized comfortably out of a small moon

change your .sav file to a .zip and then edit one of the two files inside with notepad or w/e. ctrl f crises/crisis or something and disable it there.

Planetary ringworlds are more likely. I think it would be called a torus, or something.

Is early war supposed to be shit in Stellaris?

>have 11 planets, spaceport on each
>opponent has 5 !!!!!!!
>somehow has more naval capacity and a fleet that is 1.7 the power of mine

Does the AI get free ships at the start or some bullshit? There's no way he could have built THAT much with 5 spaceports and still outperform me with 11, especially when I'm making 3x as many minerals as him.

>no space port, fleet on other side of empire and the hyperlane route to get there is convoluted as fuck so it'd take forever even if they weren't obliterating pirates
>watch hopelessly as it floats closer
>xenophobic pacifist rival empire on border drops their warp station based fleet in system, blows up the asteroid, then fucks back off home

Did they just display their military might AND put me in debt to them at the same time?
>>
>find "In Limbo" event

Oh my. Now this is certainly something than an unscrupulous person could exploit.

You're just fucking yourself over, anon.

And of course the AI gets boosts to all their stats. They have to, or else you'd have to program a decent AI.

I like watching Gyle's videos. He does a good job of explaining what's happening in the match and keeps it pertinent.

And FAF also integrates a lot of UI and unit mods, and gives the option to install other mods for custom matches.
