I don't know about SoV. In Gaiden they are both good units but Sonia was better and more useful. Deen is simply an overlevelled swordfighter with no real strengths over the others (and you have plenty), while Sonia is a mage with amazing stats and spell selection. Additionally, the falcoknights are most useful physical units, while you want more mages.

If anyone disagrees with Sonia>Deen in FE2, please state your reasoning.

This should be taken with a Grain of salt. In all of the Disgaea games the story can be beat with absolutely no Grinding. However in post game you'll need to grind, and the game's built around that. Grinding doesn't feel like a chore in Disgaea though because it changes up the ways you can grind.

As a FE fag, no. I beat the first game with no grinding but it was not fun. There's some strategy to it but it's more of the Awakening type of strategy where you just need to realize that you can trivialize the game by abusing certain things, like stacking up all the enemies and feeding them to your lord with triple exp to get a super overpowered invincible unit. Though I admit it's better than Awakening because in addition to level 1 throwing units you might want to level up a mage for buffs and stuff.
I prefer the FE type of TRPG where you need to come up with tactics for each map and focus on positioning and whatnot, and that's not the emphasis in Disgaea.

Just so you know, these are their actual growth rates. I believe Deen also joins at a higher level, so it's probably to make some attempt to make up for that. Sonia still has fantastic spells though, which people underestimate, and likewise Deen isn't really better than the other Mercs except for Atlas, so it really doesn't mean much.

Deen has way better bases in everything except resistance. Their growths aren't that different, Deen having a bit more hp and skill and Sonia having a bit more speed and luck, but growths are overall kinda low in this game so bases are way more important. The mercenary/myrmidon/dread fighter line is extremely good as well with dread fighter being the best class in the game.

Sonia can be good don't get me wrong, but Deen is just better.

Because he has better speed and hp and his speed growth is better by 5%. They come with the same Str and Str growth rate, however. She has an amazing skill list and you can feed Deens brave sword to one of your four dread fighters and keep Sonia and her spell list for unit diversity, for those times when you get absolutely fucked by a high def unit. There's no reason to choose Deen honestly unless you want to lean on Celica and Mae as your only workable mages, one being your lord and the other being possibly worse than Sonia by the time she joins.
