Will this finally be far enough for my fuckers to use ballista?
Siege operators really shouldn't run away at first sight of dangers, its their damn job to be there!
Also how far do the arrows swivel, can they hit the walls on the way out?

>>
>>173726614
Gobo sieges are dumb creatures that have been feeding my metal industry with goblinite for past 13 years.
And every damn time they enter from the north of my fortress and move to the right, giving me enough time to fire 1-2 salvos of ballista arrows before they reach my walls and get gunned down by marksdwarves.

or at least that's the plan, last siege fucking ballista operators got scared from seeing a goblin on the other end of the embark though a fortification, so I had to move back the siege engines.

Check out the /g/ pc building thread. Their OP pasta literally mentions DF. IIRC i3 or i5. The high end intel stuff only makes sense if you're running several resource intensive programs (multiple virtual machines, rendering, regularly applying specific photoshop filters to a lot of images).
But yeah, you're mostly looking for single core performance and fast ram (timing or latency? I don't remember. There was bay12 forum research). Don't forget that your motherboard has to support that ram speed.

No flowing water.

Water flows utterly decimate the framerate when not inside a strictly 1-tile trench. You can go from 300+ frames/sec on a 2x2 map to less than 100/sec, just because you had water move around too much.

>>173738392
With flowing water.
Anon is being melodramatic. Water/magma flows will ding your fps some, but they're not going to make the game unplayable. And once you're done moving the liquids (or your "flows" reach 7/7 depth throughout) your fps goes back to where it was before.
>>
>>173738392
Drain cavern water or surface pools into a cistern, using a screw pump to pump it into a separate cistern to clean it if it's muddy

A screw pump can also desalinate ocean water, if necessary

Until there's actual ways to do anything with the ocean, this is the only way for any of the aquatic creatures to mean anything other than random meat deposits from beached whales.

Anything with a volcano.
Terrifying biomes in general, like a terrifying glacier.
Any embark site very close to a Tower.

I haven't adventured in a while so my conversation is a bit rusty. You want to either spread rumors (from the continue a conversation prompt) or brag about your kills (it's random which kill you'll brag about). The rumors list is a real pain in the ass to navigate.
You can also tell a story, I think the menu option is "begin a performance" or something like that. Even if you're a shitty storyteller it will still spread the info to anyone in earshot.

The outer layer walkway doesn't really have much purpose. You're better off building your workshops on the z-level above or below the stockpiles with a stairway connection in the middle of the stockpile space itself. That enables quicker access to and from the stockpiles.

Bedrooms can go literally anywhere.

Dwarf Fortress being hard is a meme. If you're patient and have basic reading comprehension, you can play. Whether you have fun or not depends on your mindset, but if you enjoy this sort of thing df is very, very fun.

Just download the basic game (with or without a tileset, your choice), open the quickstart guide on the wiki, and play through a couple of forts while experimenting. The first few will probably die quickly and hilariously, but don't get mad and treat it as a learning experience.

The ui needs some getting used to, but I never had a problem with it past the first few hours. Good luck anon.
>>
>>173772763
It's not hard. You just need half a functioning brain to learn it. Just don't go into it like any other game thinking it's press X to make a sword

DFHack and maybe Dwarftherapist since Hack does its job just as well now. Legends viewer if you're playing adventure mode or want deep lore. Everything else is bloat.
>>
>>173772763
I would say it depends on how far you want to take it. just having a functioning fort is pretty easy, but getting all your industries at peak efficiency with all your autism projects perfected is going to take a bit of knowledge on how the game works.

The playerbase is big enough already, and the dev gets enough donations to keep working.

We don't need to make compromises to make the community grow.
>>
>>173774457
It's certainly a shit interface - nobody here doubts that. It's inconsistent; menus grew over time and have been added in inconsistent positions, the navigation of submenus are often inconsistent, and screens that control similar settings are often vastly different.
It also displays information very badly. Often a graph would benefit to show development over time, and other times information is displayed as unformatted text instead of a graphic or list (for example the wound and personality screen would benefit from some more formatting). And the worst offender: some often used actions (changing jobs and viewing what dwarf has what job enabled) are hidden in sub-sub-submenus viewing single dwarves, without any overview.

However the underlying core principle of navigating menus with series of mnemotic keypresses (b for build, then t for table for example) is so much better than using the mouse to navigate menus, it starts to piss you off if it's missing in other games.
So if you're complaining about that, it seems really silly to people that play the game.

The mouse does have its benefits though. First of all, it doesn't really hurt to have all menus be also clickable - there is absolutely no disadvantage to this. Secondly, some actions are simply more effective with a mouse: drawing a designation area like you would select multiple files in windows explorer for example.
Some mouse action is already implemented by the way, but I doubt we'll see an interface overhaul any time soon. Come back in 10 years for version 0.60.32

mostly because the conversation system is incomplete.

what you can do is talk to two different members of the same group. when you talk to the second one, you ask him what he thinks about the first one. then he'll say the name of the group that they both belong to.

Obviously has nothing to do with that. There are one or two guys here that are convinced of manipulators superiority. One of them is max, who spergs out and turns into a cringe-quote machine every time therapist vs manipulator comes up. One of them got ahold of the OP and dropped that bitchy passive-aggressive line in it to shill their minority preference. We can have reasonable arguments about which is better or even whether either is good at all, but vandalizing the OP is too much.
>>
>>173784670
I didn't even notice it until someone felt the need to bring it up 180 posts into the thread.

In any case, I'm extremely tired of entitled cunts who only drop by to inform the rest of us that they won't even touch the game until therapist is up to date.

Also, you've got love how you empathise how everyone who disagrees with you must be a minority, just to give legitimacy to your own views.
>>
>>173784670
I'm neither and also think manipulator is "superior". That is, I prefer to use it. Simply because it's integrated into DF, so I can use it more efficiently. Rapist obviously has more features, but I don't need any of them.

I don't see anything wrong with using manipulator instead of waiting for rapist to update (and vice versa, whichever is up to date first).
>>
>>173784829
>>173784963

I understand your feelings, but I think you're both misunderstanding my post. I don't use therapist or manipulator. I'm a v-p-l kind of guy. I don't care which one anybody uses, or how anyone else chooses to play DF. But the OP is a /dfg/ resource, and some catty asshole choosing to vandalize it because they care too much about how other people play is petty and harmful to the general.
Really, the parentheticals need to be removed altogether, therapist, dfhack, and the starter pack are all updated to the current version, and all that does is confuse new players, which is what prompted this conversation in the first place.

Personally, I agree with him on one point he has made before: Masterwork has hijacked the modding community, and has made it very hard to discuss mods outside of it on the main forums. Since it has its own separate sections on both the main forum and on the wiki, it also has the appearance of being THE official modpack. Apart from that, Meph STILL manages to leak out into the other shit he does, i.e. Meph tileset.

However, it's also pretty obvious that when he says this, he's also biased toward his own mods, and buttmad because they aren't played enough.

Pic related, it's Meph getting BTFO.

Nah but seriously, that sounds like a cool mod. I can't wait until various industries like farming and brewing become way more in depth, as of right now they're just way too simple. The keystroke for toggling an entire labor category is shift+enter. Maybe that's what you're doing? Enter should a)enable a specific labor or b)show you the labors that make up a category.

Okay, just checked.

Press v-(move with arrow keys until you're on a dwarf)-p-l
navigate the menu with plus and minus. toggle with enter.
If you're on a menu, it should switch to:
>enter: view category
>shift+enter: toggle category

Inside a category, ESC goes back up a level.

If that's not the case for you, I assume something fucked up during installation.

Huh, then it should work, really.
first of all, try it again. Download it again, and make sure it's completed. Extract it into a new folder - NEVER update by pasting a new version on top of an old version. Generate a world with short history (so it's faster). embark at a random spot and test .

Also, check data/init/interface.txt

I see a lot of you have only 1 tile wide tunnels. Aren't you supposed to make them at least 2-wide so that dwarves don't have to climb over each other? I mean you have unlimited space.

That doesn't fix digging cancellation, though. It just keeps you from seeing the cancellation, which is objectively worse.
>>
>>173819947
Its much better than having the game pause/recenter for EVERY SINGLE SQUARE.
Now it just shows you the notification, so you can wait them all out, then dig another layer.
Very useful, especially when digging under river/lake/sea.
>>
>>173820117
I prefer to redesignate each tile as it cancels, it gets the digging done faster. And if you aren't attentive, or are occupied with more than one project, the cancellations can easily be missed leaving a badplayer scratching his head months later when he discovers that the mining isn't done.

This may come as a shock to you, but it's actually possible to play DCSS without ever visiting /rlg/. Lots of people have done it, including myself (I started before /vg/ existed, back when DCSS wasn't so full of stupid shit. 0.5.2 forever!).

But also: no wonder DF development has been slow. Get back to work, Toady! I'm only half-kidding. Roguelikes can really drain your drive to do anything productive.

>>173818662
Unless I'm getting you mixed up with someone else, you seem to have been pretty active lately with actual DF fortresses, which I rather appreciate seeing. I like your style in fortress-building.

>>173819930
>more complex pathfinding calculations
I think Toady agrees with you, but I can't imagine it would be all that much of a problem. Perhaps I'm just letting my lack of education show, but I'd think it'd be a fairly simple matter of tile A being connected to tile B but tile B not being connected to tile A, such that if the pathing is currently on tile A it can go to B, but if it's currently on tile B it can't go to A.

>>173823539

Actually, it IS a feature.

Animals which kill someone in wordgen get elevated to hist fig status, and travel as asterisks on the fast travel map, just like any other hist fig travelling on the map. This is intended. It's so they can ambush adventurers.

One thing that ISN'T intended is the use of the word "recruit". Toady has explained why it's there: when hist figs travel on the world map, they count as one-man armies. With the exception of performers and scholars, all of them thus gets a soldier profession name. This happens to refugees (because the current system can't handle unarmed civilians travelling on the map normally), but also to dangerous animals with hist fig status.

Sure, except there's often like a hundred dwarves doing it at the same time. Making pathing even slightly more complicated can have a major effect.

So your question made me curious, and I opened up my (still installed) 40d and checked. It's not there. There are no categories at all.

Also, what the fuck was up with that fortress. What was I thinking?

>>173872048
31.17 (the next fort I still have saved) already had categories. So categories have been added somewhere between 40d and 31.17.

It also used ESC to go back in menus instead of Space. In 40d, ESC would take you to the "abandon fortress" menu from anywhere, in other menus you had to use Space to go back one level.

Is there ever an actual use for minecarts?
I've started 5 forts now with the explicit intention of using minecarts and yet every time I realized it was so much faster to just drop a workshop where the stone is or have most of the fort dumping the stone in a QSP next to the workshops.
>>
>>173872048
Damn dude, you're pretty brave for posting that. Also what the fuck does the toggle cat thing do?
>>
>>173872428
Looking back, it was a pretty ambitious project.
Damming up a river and creating a reservoir.
I was done with the building aspects and just needed to let the dam fill up. Unfortunately, I found out that the water doesn't fill up over the level of the river, even if it's only flowing off the map upstream. I'd have had to dam up the lower river at its upstream end too, and build a wall along the edge of the map. That just seemed fake to me back then and I gave up the fortress.
Still, I still used phoebus or mayday, I think. Ugh.
>>173872835
Well, it toggles the entire category, obviously. Labors are separated into submenus (healthcare includes diagnosing, suturing, surgery, etc for example), and you can either toggle the entire category, or go into it and toggle the entries separately.

Anyway, it taught me a lot about DF, and I got to experiment with fortress layouts and fortress migration: I used a temporary fortress while I set up the basics and had miners dig out the entire, huge final fortress. When I migrated to the actual fortress, the temporary housing was transformed into the barracks. I use this type of fortress setup for all megaprojects now.

At least I seem to remember that it failed. So I tried to drain it down below into the caverns, which seemed to have worked - I could finally install floodgates to block the river.
Of course I made everything lever controlled with floodgates instead of using walls. You wouldn't want to make a mistake and not be able to rectify it.

Yes, if you build fortress areas far apart instead of on top of one giant central staircase. Or in weird scenarios where the first cave layer is incredibly deep. I once had to go down 30 z-levels to find the first one.

off-site quarry, use minecarts to transport the blocks. Really useful for megaprojects.

If minecarts were in 31.17, this 10 z-level high dam would have been a lot faster, and more importantly a lot more consistent in the color.
Hauling labor is cheap of course. But pathfinding can be a bitch, and I'd rather have a set up like this:

>miners
>mason & workshop on site to produce blocks.
>half a dozen dedicated haulers doing nothing but moving blocks from the mason into a few minecarts
>minecarts transport material to construction site
>construction workers use that material

instead of :
>miners
>mason & workshop on site to produce blocks.
>half a dozen dedicated haulers move material from mason to stockpile #1
>a dozen dedicated haulers move material from stockpile #1 to stockpile #2
>construction workers use that material

The less dwarves walk, the better.
>>
>>173874119
On that topic, managing a large workforce for dam building with just vpl would be horrible. You'd just have no overview.
>>
>>173874243
Managing a workforce for dam building is not necessary at all.

The only needed labour is construction, and all dorfs have it activated by default.
>>
>>173868672
If you fight with a silver axe, yes.
>>
>>173874508
Of course it's not necessary. But it makes the whole operation a lot more efficient and controllable.
I don't want all dwarves to build the construction, I want a specific subset of them to do the construction. These dwarves sleep, eat & drink on site, so they spend less time walking. Other dwarves are responsible for the regular fortress upkeep, which eat, sleep, etc inside the fortress. And so on.
Haulers that are responsible for hauling material to the job site have no business clearing the quarries on the other side of the map.
All of this goes through various phases of construction with more or less workforce required in this or that area, and I want to be able to adapt my setup accordingly.
>>

Is there some cheating BS way to give my adventurer objects in adventure mode? The only way to get human/elf sized armor (as far as I know) is to custom-build it at a fortress and either stockpile it in the fort or trade so much of it that it can sometimes be found in other places of the world.

It seems like a better use of my time to just hack some in. Is there such a way to do this?

They'll be a great way to keep your artifacts in a more secluded area, now that every visitor is a potential thief.

Hopefully, there will also be some hardcoded way to have soldiers take turns guarding the museums.

Human armour can be found in human sites. If you don't mind ruining the immersion, you can grab the ones lying around in meadhalls with no consequences. Or, you can buy them from armorers in towns.

Elves and goblins can use dwarf sized armours. They can be bought from brokers at the trade depots of fortresses.

Well that's that; my inability to refuse any bards admittance to my tavern saved me; apparently it became well known and a few local lords happened to be there with a retinue of human soldiers.

I am now down to 32 dwarves (actually 30 but somehow I have goblins working for me, no clue when that happened) and who knows how many human bards. I lost literally everyone important; my queen, master-legendary cooks, carpenters, masons, and engravers. Even my bookkeeper, tavern keeper, and manager are dead.

At least I have a lot more bedrooms to go around now.

idk if this was a typo or whatever but there are general rules to go by when recruiting for your military, and these include

>shouldn't be necessary for the functioning of your fortress (e.g., USEFULNESS)
>shouldn't be a woman (they WILL pop a baby out in the middle of a battle)

and then the SECONDARY items you should concern yourself with:

Humans outnumber my dwarves by 4-to-1 or higher just in this fortress, and they have absolutely infested my tavern but they hunt rats for food and the dwarves don't so I think I'm still winning.

Also their castles and towns are apparently inferior to some no-name dwarven fort's dining hall, so that's another win for dwarven culture.

In other news, the military is training at least; the best of them is now competent with his weapon. Despite this, of the seven. 3 use the whole uniform, 2 have everything but the weapon, and the other 2 only wear part of the kit, and don't use the weapon.

The gear is made, it just sits in the stockpile in perpetuity. And it's not like the 4 that don't use the weapon are wielding something else, they just go barehanded.

Is it true that dwarfes can't train certain attributes over a certain threshold that they where born with? Is someone who is quite clumsy destined to stay shitty at agility? I read something about it in here, but I can't really make sense of the wiki article on it.
>>
>>173955273
>Attributes are capped in Adventure mode and probably also in Dwarf mode. Those caps are governed by MENT_ATT_CAP_PERC and PHYS_ATT_CAP_PERC. By default the maximum attribute values (barring increases from vampirism and other interactions) are governed by the starting value as well as the median for that caste (that is the middle value in PHYS_ATT_RANGE, for example 1000 for most attributes for Dwarves). attribute_cap = starting_value + max {starting_value, median}
>>
>>173955273
Default is 2x starting attribute.

Starting with 650 agility means you can only go up to 1300 agility.
>>
>>173955646

It's the greater of 1000+starting_value and 2*starting_value.

Hang out with a bunch of weeaboos.

If you haven't killed yourself within 5 minutes of being near them, then you should be able to obtain their knowledge of the Japanese language.

or just look up a Japanese language dictionary and take Japanese language courses or something.
>>
>>173958626

Well I personally think a mix of looking up/practicing kanji/kana/new vocab online, and also trying to talk to people who speak Japanese.

In other words a two-pronged approach incorporating both more bookish study of words and concepts that you want to know, as well as practical use by conversation or writing.

Try to learn the Jouyou Kanji (school kanji) or just look up kanji you're interested in knowing/have seen somewhere.

I use this site to look up words/kanji:
http://classic.jisho.org/

Basically learn what words you're interested/curious about, and make heavy use of that dictionary site.

I also live in Japan and it makes it way easier to study.

>>173962390
I think it depends on how you live.
I personally try to learn Japanese and make Japanese friends and generally immerse myself in the culture. If you do that it's not that bad.

Although as a foreigner (especially non-Asian foreigner) you are definitely thought of as a gaijin not a nihonjin or whatever. But if you adapt to the culture then it's no big deal.

A lot of foreigners here tend to hang out with other foreigners and speak English/their language a lot and stick with their cultural group. I think if you do that you might have a harder time since you're sorta putting yourself apart from the general masses of the people
>>
>>173962390
>>173962609
To elaborate, I think if you try to think of yourself as a member of the society and learn how to adopt to the mannerisms and etiquette (it's different from the West), and learn how to communicate in Japanese (I think knowing the language is important to get immersed in the mindset), then you can sort of enjoy yourself.

But on the other hand if you don't speak Japanese, and hang out with foreigners mostly, and expect Japanese people to speak to you in broken English instead of Japanese, then you kinda alienate yourself from the society and it must be bad/hard to deal with.

Learning the language is super important I think.

Should I feel bad for forcing the children to work through the rapist?
>>
>>173976076
yeah, recovery times work well for now, but I was thinking in something more realistic

It makes sense that, when multi tile creatures are implemented, the game'll have to deal with a lot new stuff related to distances
One of them is the inconvenient problem of having to atack something that's far away
ranged weapons kinda do the trick, but a lot of strategy in wars deal with this
Why allow yourself to be atacked by a swordman, if you can keep him at a safe distance with a spear, etc.

Just imagine a dragon. Dragons have the bad habit of eating you before you come close enough to hit them becuase they are big as fuck
Even if you get close enough, they can just swing a claw and fuck you up, because yes
That doesnt seem right
If he can atack me with a mele atack just because he is multi tile, and can stretch his claw to atck me from 7 tiles, I should be allowed to weild multi-tile weapons
Being fair, the reason I want multi-tiles weapons is just a 35% about realism, and the other part genuine desire for over the top combat surprises
Just imagine how crazy would parry be with multi-tile weapons, or ask yourself if being multi-tile should add damage multipliers to your rolls while making the weapon heavier
Its just so cool, and I hope it will come some day, but I have never heared it mentioned
>>
>>173979648
> but I have never heared it mentioned
Ooooooooh it was, it was. A few times throughout the years as i remember. I don't even care if the game starts to run at 1 fps big creature battles, it'll just gonna be so damn awesome you'll get overhelmed. Milti-tile creatures could also lead to milti-tile objetcs. Like big boulders. We already have trees but they still need some work, they don't fall realistically yet. I can see this leading to avalanches, landslades and other natural disasters.
>>
>>173979648

I mean, the trope of becoming stronger than a normal mortal is there, right?

>inb4 guts
Imagine, for example, a lore from the perfectioned myth generator that speak about giant mortals, called brug for convenience.
Brugs fights the titans, which are even bigger than them
Great war, blah blah, and both the titans and the brugs die out
Gods are bored with age of emptyness 24/7 and fill the earth back with life
...
However, the earth is the same
Structures, artifacts, weapons, food and drink, written text, etc., in a word, culture, are still the same in this world
Humans in this world are completely dedicated to learning the old ways of the brugs, deciphering their language and learning from their culture
A procedurally generated role in this world is ''archeologist'' obviously, and they try to recreate their big-ass weapons to all the brug-eaboos in the world
Create adventurer and bam, you have a ten yard magical melee weapon

Not really, silver is the worst possible material you could've rolled.

Yes. You shouldn't rape children in the first place, but using it as punishment if they don't work in your sweatshop is just sick. You should probably just kill yourself now desu senpai.
>>
>>173979520
nah, it's your game man. though i would prefer just to make them do really simple, menial labor that a child would be able to do (harvesting, cleaning, hauling) rather than like, engineering and smithing

If you consider the fact that a tile is 2x2x3m then pikes and cavalry lances (which don't currently exist) would be the only weapons that ought to ever be multitile or have a reach that exceeds the adjacent tile. Even giant weeaboo fantasy swords would be contained in a single tile. And only the very longest historical pikes would have a reach that extended past an adjacent tile (though some kinds of gonzo 6+m long pikes existed that would reach even further, they were generally impractical and seldom used).

even a single tile of extension with pikes would make combat more interesting if you could zone out enemies

Can the path to the trade depot be built underground?
>>

I just want to be able to keep enemies at range, even if we are next to each other. A two-handed sword should be useful in preventing an enemy from punching you, for example.

Dude, it would just mean adding 1/7s randomly when it rains. They would quickly evaporate.
>>
Focus is important because it significant buffs you, right? Does it scale with the number of needs you have satisfied, or will only having one need just mean you're focused all the time? For that matter, how do I stop my adventurer from crying all the time?

Plus, 1/7 is like, dozens of cm of standing water, that's not just rain, it's a torrential downpour.

Not all that weird. You'll have to imagine it being in some depression in the terrain.

>that's not just rain, it's a torrential downpour.
Depending on the rainfall in a given region, that might be exactly what we want. Floods are a thing.

Also, it would encourage you to take precautions not to let rainwater flood your tunnels.

I'm actually glad df has animal people in them. Reminds me of Redwall and Lugaru/Overgrowth. Which are both pretty cool things.

American here. Your position is perfectly reasonable. We complain about Mexicans and various hispanics doing it a lot but some of us do the same shit in other countries. It's both disrespectful and stupid.

Bullshit, they just use it as a gathering base to launch raids and leak out of their containment all over the site from /v/ to /tg/
