Working on a Far East mod, inspired by Drew's Qing dwarves from the last thread. I know that I want to have Ming China, LĂȘ dynasty, Japan, Manchu, and a generic Euro civ, but I'm not sure if I want to assign one of DF's races to each of them or just make them all humans.

Also what color scheme is that? It looks really good, but your framerate must be absolutely glacial.

Its a joke about one of the two most common beginner ways to lose your first fortress.
no.1 being starvation/dehydration
no.2 setting up your first well/fresh water source without knowing that pressure was simulated in this game (or how to depresurize flowing water), so when someone uses the well the entire fortress gets flooded in a blink drowning everyone.

There is a screw pump, set to pump water from the north. There are open spaces all around the screw pump except for one space north which is a channel. One z-level underneathe the screw pump is water. A pump operator starts the screw pump and is swept into the channel by the pumped water and drowns in the reservoir.

>>
>>173997270
>open spaces all around the screw pump
That's your problem. It pumps faster than the water will fall down a single channel. So the water spreads from the output tile, eventually spreading to the passable tile of the pump that dwarf stands on to operate it, thence pushing the dwarf off the pump. Use walls or something similarly impassable to divide the output side of the pump from the dwarf-usable side.
>>
>>173997839
Maybe try a captain america build? just run around with a shield and punching/bashing people's heads in.

Macemen are fun also. I just run around beating hands and feet until they give in to the pain and leave them there for a bit before I bash their head in.

I dont see a problem with this, you plan to have all factions at war with each other by default?
Or were you hoping for diplomatic reasons for war/peace so its random every world generation?

Well, I haven't opened up DF today, but yesterday I was building an apparatus to test a component of a system I intend to build to allow me to automate having my dwarves make large numbers of prepared meals that look like:
minced prickle berry seeds, minced barley flour, minced donkey milk, minced blue peafowl intestines
instead of:
minced prickle berry seeds, minced prickle berry seeds, minced prickle berry seeds, minced prickle berry seeds.

If successful, I should be able to use it for various other purposes as well, in theory making my dwarven society far happier and more productive.

>pic
Is that the same one I saw a few weeks ago or are you doing that again?
>>
>>174011229
that reminds me I need to build a labyrinth again to screen out the infected or *vampires* for migrates
>>
>>174011520
Again. We have a lot of plumbing, and I've been tweaking it a lot to get it right.

I've done a kitchen system like you're describing. You can do it pretty easily by setting up 4-n single-tile no-barrel food stockpiles linked to your kitchen that take from your main food stockpile. Make each of them accept only a specific food category, or even a specific food item (like if you want goose and ostrich egg omelets or something). If you intend to use barreled stuff (milk, syrup, mog juice) you'll need to use 2-tile stockpiles, as you'll have to allow barrels and dwarves always place one empty barrel in any stockpile that allows them. It's a great way to get food variety and it can be pretty easily customized after the initial setup if you want to make specific recipes.

Dont fuck around with were-beasts if you dont know what you are doing.
I once had a Werezebra jump over a wall, and get into my courtyard.
He broke the first dwarf in half, took his pig-fiber cloth robe, then went full Jackie Chan on 45 other dwarves.
To be honest, it was fucking hillarious, I placed those robes in the center of my fortress and built a beautiful garden around them, it was my most treasured artifact, it even had the whole 'k'ill list on it, heh.

Tie a rock to a witch and throw her in a river, if she dies she wasn't a witch.

Same principle with the dwarf, if he starves to death, he wasn't infected, problem solved.
If he turns, he cant kill half of your fort, recruit and atom-crush him later, problem solved.

Once you've become a grand master fighter/wrestler/swordsman, vampire, and necromancer what's left to do in the world. Nothing is a challenge anymore. Lots of different ways. Relicwebs currently spans ~150z, and there living and working areas spread throughout the whole of it. Most dwarves don't actually have their own rooms, they just sleep in whichever bed they're closest to when the need arises. I probably have enough for all 125 of my citizens, I haven't really checked though. No one ever sleeps anywhere but a bed unless they climb somewhere inconvenient, so getting the individual room assignments down isn't really a priority.

Anyone else noticed that in Fortress Mode dwarves (and other creatures) die of old age EXACTLY on 1st of January together.
Why the fuck is this a thing?
Cant Toady at least do the "is it time to die?" calculations once a week or once a month?
Not like it would cost a lot of power to roll a few random numbers once every hour of real time to check which old fart dies.

Commieblock threads on /int/.

They tend to be 50% Russians who defend them, and 50% americans and butthurt belters who hate on them. A lot of comfy pics usually end up getting posted.

Also, before the on-topic police notices our little digression here, I must point out its relevancy to fortress design.

I've made several attempts at incorporating modernist architecture and city planning in my forts. One of the biggest issues is of course the core principle of the "open neighbourhood". It simply becomes hard to defend against gobbos. You have to build a wall surrounding everything, but you can't let it be too noticable on the skyline.

Oh hey, I thought that was comfybro!

I only ever did one big full excavation like that in fort mode, shortly after I first got twbt working (and before I started adventuring and stopped being able to use twbt) I think.

The edge of three biomes (maybe four? was a wild spot) with two aquifers but they didn't overlap on one tile so I dug down from there and excavated everything on the first dry layer, then added in the waterfall misters and flooded the first floor around the living areas with magma.

I go there, kill everyone, come back, boast about killing everyone I killed that I can find in the list. People still say that they have a problem with that bandit group and the camp is still there...
can you actually destroy these camps? Can you destroy a group/boast about killing the group and not just a member of it.

Didn't know the game could generate massive lakes like this. Or maybe it's an inland freshwater sea? Towards the north end it drains into a river via a high-pressure waterfall (thankfully my hands were free when I learned this, so I climbed out before I could be drawn to the bottom) and in the south, it's dead calm. At the middle there's a clearly discernable point where the water goes from perfectly calm to tumultous. I'm likely the first human to see this, since while there appear to be several dwarven fortresses around, all human civilization is far to the northeast, on an entirely seperate continent. I wish exploration was a thing you could do in adventurer mode.

According to the raws you need 50 dwarves and either 25k generated wealth or 2500 exported wealth to start getting ambushes. Sieges requires 80 dwarves, but have the same wealth requirements.

You might just not be getting attacked because you're too far away from goblins though, or because there are other targets closer to the pits. Just gotta wait on it.

I was exploring this unpopulated continent, and suddenly saw this hamlet to the east. Investigation found it totally empty of people and items. While there, I noticed a city directly to the south. I checked that place out too, but all I found was a warehouse full of food and a castle full of forgotten-beast statues. Ostensibly the place also had a temple, but I couldn't find the thing on foot. Similarly, the map shows two buildings at the edge of the city's territory, but there's nothing there on closer examination.

Anyone have some idea of what might have happened here? The civilization apparently died out, but it couldn't have been from war because these two hamlets are the only settlements on the entire continent.

kek didn't know about Planepacked
>>
my workshops is getting stuck with what they produce, it all just lie on one tile inside workshop. after i destroy workshop things are bursting from that tile, but dwarves won't use it no matter what i do, i can only dump it. is there fix for this or smth? i started another fortress, and things was going normal, but now carpenter workshop again start this shit. no CLT sign on the workshop.
>>
>>174102074
If they don't have a stockpile and don't have anything to be used in, they just stay on the tile
>>
>>174102074
dont know exactly what you're talking about
I had a case where my food was suddently "gone".
It was inside a workshop (not inside, actually laying inside it/you could see them with 'k'. I think it was a farmers workshop or so. plant barrels weren't even supposed to be in it)
when i deconstructed it it was normal again.

don't know when it happend, but I flooded the area for farmable ground. some of the water reached that far. I think the barrels somehow got flooded inside the workshop, but im not sure
>>
>>174102512
>>174102752
i certainly had stockpile for it and i have it now, but beds and bins are on the floor. when it's inside workshop i can see it only with 't'. if i didn't have stockpile, then workshops should have become cluttered and once stockpile present dwarves will haul everything, that happened with me once

>>
>>174126642
Once I've got some nice stuff carved out and smoothed I'll hop back and forth to see which one I prefer. I definitely appreciated how much the shading differentiated terrain on the embark screen.

I tend to go with less is more for DF, hence using the basic vector set.

IIRC, I put the workshops in the corners of each floor in the industrial buildings, and the tiles between them were made into stockpiles needed to sustain them.

I didn't use linked stockpiles, so they didn't need to contain everything.

Also, some of the buildings were dedicated entirely to stockpiles (one entire tower was for storing military equipment, for example), and one of the top floors was used as the office for the bookie and the manager.

He has a blog where he posts all his stuff. 4chan won't let me link it for whatever reason, but just google "acidyblog" and it'll show up first.

2 weeks seems right since he'll probably end up tossing in a rework of the abstracted battle code

>diplomacy
that's the invaders demanding/fort as a quest target kinda? I think a lot of that is already handled by the quest system in place and stuff like the bandit harrassment, a couple weeks to tie it in fully?

>kobolds
assuming they'll be added to caves as proper populations with zones it shouldn't take that long, a couple weeks tops

>pre-testing and bugsquashing
dunno if it's a full 6 weeks for both of these, the 42.01 runup went from the 11/17 post to the 11/23 with the final bits of the list, then 11/29 with the last bug squashing and testing, with the launch on 12/01, I'll be optimistic and call it 3 weeks for this part

>subtotal: 9 weeks

>conferences
fffffffffffuuuuuu

>illness
well, it's summer coming up instead of him getting a winter cold again

I'll call it 15 weeks or so, with a release in early July.

If future generations of /dfg/ want to read it they can hunt it down in the archive like this one did.
The OP has important downloads, guides, and community resources. A link to an archive of one of the threads of one of the times when we played a forum game would be totally out of place.

But I still think it would be cool to have some sort of (external) database where we stored this kind of community related data in an easily accessible form.

Some questions.

Just breached my first aquifer, very proud. I've never built a fort with one before. Any good ways to utilize the aquifier? I mean I settled next to a river so I already have water.

Also how do I get dwarves to actually use bins? I'll have a stockpile of bars or something and they'll put one out of the 50 bins I have set to be put in there and then just chuck everything else on the floor.

Finally, "Cannot reach item" spam. I'm 100% sure that this is because of some item in the caverns that no one can reach and if I could just find and forbid it I could make the spam stop but I have no way of doing it. What do?

>>
>>174188882
go full Cask of Amontillado on the little brats. Dig out a large room and burrow them inside, then brick them up. It'll kill em eventually and you'll probably get some interesting combat logs when some of them eventually go insane.

>>
>>174188882

"Burrows not working" is code word for "I dont know how to use them".

Designate a new burrow under your atom smasher, and instead of activating it, just assign children to it. Assigned dwarves will go to their burrow even when its not activated, while activated burrows will draw in and limit ALL the dwarves.

i thought that normally the mayor is the most useless dude you have (since they stay in the meeting area and talk to people 24/7)
why is one of my soldier mayor? he got reelected a lot of times. is it because of the taverns and stuff? saw my squads in the tavern a few times.

didn't have that many idle people before, but I hope it continues. this mayor only mandates production of high boots and forbids the export of high boots. I think he has a fetish or something
>>

Mayors are just dwarves with high social skills who convince the other dwarves to vote for them
they can have any job really it doesn't matter

>>174190279
The dwarves elect the person in the fortress with the highest social skills, since their only real job is being complained at by angry people. Nothing else factors in.
>>
>>174190478
but I think in the past it often was someone that didn't have a job. since they constantly made friends in the meeting area. (how voted for them)

I mixed them all up. I've got the expanded metals stuff that another anon and I were discussing a while back:

iron = iron
wrought iron = pig iron (1 iron bar+flux+coal)
mild steel = weaker steel (2 iron bars+flux+coal)
spring steel = flexible steel (iron+wrought+coal)
dwarven steel = denser stiffer steel (mild+spring+coal)

Then I've got fort making dwarves and town making dwarves, fort uses candy/platinum/dwarf steel for coins, town uses platinum/dwarf steel/silver for coins.

Treefuckers get petrified wood, bituminous coal, and obsidian.

Humans use rose gold, spring steel, and iron.

Goblins use mild steel, wrought iron, and lead.

There's the metals, naturally you're welcome to fiddle around and tweak/remove/change whatever, but it was an interesting idea, and it has a nice comfy feel in game having the different aspects of metalworking and tech levels fleshed out via more interesting armor/weapon materials rather than "yay, another fucking pewter or jewelry alloy" stuff.

It's kinda cheap if you're desperate for loot and don't wanna risk it, but if you pick up something to wake the mummy and then save your game they despawn from the tomb.

Fair warning though: they aren't gone for good if you do this, so be wary bumping into roving *'s afterwards!

The cavern dining hall isn't going to get its misters after all.

Things to know:
Mist does not travel diagonally.
100 ticks is long enough that falling water will, even if it has somewhere orthogonal to go. In this case it was falling 2z to the floor here and then another z to a drain that leads one more z down to off-map fortifications. The drain might've worked if it was deeper and the water had more pressure, but there's no reason to try to modify it since the misters won't work.
>>
>>174213007
what i understanded from reading wiki is only that water will not go higher than its source, so river or ocean will flood fortress to the surface. that's all, everywhere is warning about flooding, but i didn't see nothing special that one should know. just dig where you want water to flow and place there door/floodgate with lever connected to it, then channel down one last tile from cavern itself.

For more !!FUN!!

So, I made a nice fort in a pocket 5-y-old world, made lots of engravings, adamantine axes for my main squad and a couple human-sized adamantine armor pieces for adventure mode.
Then, I run out of adamantine and I decide to dig into a square I kinda knew I shouldn't dig yet. My Axe Lords kill the first 10-15 clowns, then get literally decimated by fires and syndrome extracts.

I manage to wall half my fort away, having my weapons stored in the secure part...

and then I get the stupid idea to retire immediately and start adventuring.

Turns out I can't play as a dorf and the world only has two human villages with 5 soldiers total and absolutely NO piece of armor or weapons lying around anywhere. So, it's imperative for me to get the armor and weapons I crafted if I am to face a Dark Fortress (or anything else really).

Now, as you know, all the fort residents get jumbled in random positions when you retire. All of them.
My adventurer gets greeted by a screaming ball of fire right at the first turn of my old fort. Dorfs are literally standing around. My dorfs have been completely subjugated to demons, that's why I couldn't make a dorf adventurer.

So I'm making a new fort with the sole purpose of crafting and distributing as many weapons and armor as possible.
What are my chances of driving away the demons from my old fort, though?
>>
>>174220923
10 or 11z depending on where they fall off, and another 10z up, although there aren't many places in the central chamber above the pictured z-level that are still accessible to foot traffic.
The bridges and stairs there are temporary, there are a lot of separate digs and smoothing going on around here that they need to be able to move between quickly. We've only had one fall in this part so far, and the dwarf survived. There have been quite a few cancellation-related climbing incidents, though.

>>
>>174223048
The only thing that matters is which enitity you belong to.

Goblin civs have a token that forces the citizens to unprovokedly go into combat with everyone outside the civ (the civilisans won't actually attack, but they'll run away and be impossible to interact with properly).

Unless you belong to a goblin civ (which you don't, unless you're playing a modded game), you shoulnd't have to worry about getting attacked by everyone.

However, there is the (marginal) risk that your elf civ is at war with the dorfs, in which case you might get attacked.

Ohhh, yeah, farming is one of those things where you feel like you're always underprepared, but those fields you have there should keep a fort of like, I dunno anons, 150 dorfs fed/drunk?

Putting down too many fields when you don't have enough seeds yet is just wasted space, putting down a bunch of plots when you aren't running a massive food export system and feeding a fort of 300+guests is just overkill AND it will be damn near impossible to get everything harvested without it withering.

That's before even touching on fruit gathering, of course.

if a dorf has a job to do in the caverns (i.e. collecting spider silk), he'll go there regardless of the traffic zones.

the traffic zones are for deciding which path to take when travelling in the fort. they can't be used to stop people from going somewhere.

It's basic knowledge that all creatures who enter the embark appear on the edges of the map. This applies to invaders, beasts, caravans and common fauna.

If you wall off any area within the embark completely, then that area will become 100% safe. It's not rocket science.

>so i need to place walls around the perimeter on every lvl of cavern?
Depends on how big you want your safe space to be. Building on the floor will be enough to keep most ground animals out, but you'll have to seal it off towards the roof if you want to keep out climbers and flyers.

I don't know whether info on spawning is on the wiki, but just by playing the game, you have noticed that every creature that appears on the map enters from one of the edges. That's pretty common sense too; if you build a sealed off room, random animals won't generate out of thin air inside it.

Its just another stat that can easily be found on internet and it comes in play when impact/force calculations are done.
Mass, Density, Speed, Contact Area, Force, all that shit is used to simulate stuff happening in dorf fort.

When a dwarf axe hits an elf in the center of his "grown wood armor" dont you think density of the wood its been grown from matters?
He could have use the same number for all the wood density as it would only make a slight difference, but instead he spend extra 30sec to look up a wood density table and write down proper numbers, I dont see a problem here.

Your civ doesn't have them as part of its costume.

you gain more knowledge about training GCSs (in the z->animals->overall training)
and your trainers skill become better with time

if you mean for example: parent wild GCS=train=> GCS (trained) => babies (semi-wild) or something like that =train=> (+trained+)
with same skilled trainer/knowledge of GCS I don't know

but you can never domesticate them since they are born as adults. and you should be very careful with breeding badly trained GCS. the babies might instantly revert to their wild status and go berserk in your fort

GCS's, along with the phantom spiders, are literally supposed to be generic creepy crawlies.

I hate how only two real life spiders exist in the game, and how one of them is a meme spider that only amerisharts have.

so.. when are visitors actually coming to my fort?
It's my first real fort since the update. I have a tavern and a temple. I think I've only ever seen the outpost liason walking through my tavern.
Part of my map is evil and it rains blood all day. Has that something to do with it? I'm also pretty far away from (most of) my civilization. They are all in one area, but had a single fort at the other end of the planet. (I've settled next to this outpost)
>>
>>174254917
As long as you can get caravans/migrants eventually visitors will come when you fortress wealth/fame goes up.
People dont want to visit a hole in dirt, they want to visit a proper stone fortress with a nice Inn/Temple.

how dangerous is a were tortoise?
My current world seems to only have werecapybaras. I cursed 2 of my adventurers, they were pretty shit in werecapybara form.
My fortress got attacked by a werecapybara and some dude collecting wood just broke out the capybaras teeth (might have been luck) and then my dwarves just gang raped it to death... now I know why I fear the night
>>
>>174260269

Being a were-anything in adventure mode is flippin sweet. You can heal your entire body every full moon. Fairly useful

Beginner here,
I have dig through clay to start my fortress.
I would like to create Wall of Clay? Is that a possibility?
I have found how to build walls but only with wood apparently.

When i dig Clay, it does not get stocked? (a bit like dirt in Minecraft)
>>
>>174265905
You have to designate an area to gather clay by making a zone using [i]
>>
>>174265905
clay is a bit more complicated to gather than stone, you need several things;

A single clay tile
A clay gathering zone (at least one tile)
A kiln

You then set a dwarf to gather clay, and once you have a bunch of the stuff, you can either fire it into bricks, or use it as is.

you should probably read this: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Ceramic_industry
>>
>>174265905
>wall of clay

there is plenty of stones to make proper walls

later in the game I always built stuff from green glass and obsidian (not natural obsidian, but casted from refilling magma and water sources)
>>
>>174270973
For that map in particular:
>go adv worldgen
>choose "medium region"
>change details
>set poles to "none"
>set world seed to "yes"
>finally, set the string under to "nigger"
>>
>>174271135
I'll grant you that, no matter what kind of fortress I set out to make, if I have fuel and sand, I always make a ton of green glass shit.

Something about it just gets my nobbin throbbin'
>>
>>174271629
Thank you, anon.
>>
>>174271737
yeah fuel is annoying but the moment I have magma my furnaces never stop pumping out glass.

once you have magma glass serrated discs (and other components) are pretty amazing. Don't know how effective they are but if I have 20 rows of weapon traps all filled with 10 masterwork glass components... gotta do something. but that doesn't even matter since they also sell for a shit-ton of money. once I have magma they are basically the only thing I export.

you mean this "Bug 9888: Crash when a weapon in a trap is destroyed by wear"?

How much of a problem is it? I don't have weapon traps in my current fort (yet). Can I just forget them completely? or is it just a problem with glass and shitty metals

Yes, that's the one. It's guaranteed to happen the first time something with metal armor wanders into a weapon trap with glass components. Might get an elf or two with them, though. I haven't tried.

I'm new and I'm really enjoying the game but I have two questions.
What are the best ways to deal with cave adaptation? I heard people roof the map, but that sounds like a lot of work.
What are animal people for? The ones that appear in the wild and not the visitors that is.
>>
>>174247128
It doesn't matter. I mean, this is fucking mermaid, i already want to make masterpeice crossbows out of them. It's the same as having a breeding pair of Roc and feed their eggs to fort.
