It's like constantly having a race against Usain Bolt. You always fail, but have infinite continues and nothing to lose, so you keep trying, no matter how much you hate to run against him, til one day you beat him.
>>
>>173690475
>til one day you beat him.
only you don't and never will as the score can always go higher in one way or another, it's more akin to a game of chess with death.

>>173690736
It's more like a metaphor for the goal you set yourself in your game. Wether that's a certain score, a 1cc, or a world record, that's completely up to you.
>>
>>173691157
but usain bolt is someone even hypothetically that you could ever ever beat, no amount of training will grant you the succesful mix of perfect genetics and accumulated ability that he has therefore it's more akin to chess with death, no matter how much you play death always wins in the end but you should keep trying anyway.

>>173719441
>what the fuck are you talking about? the later stages and bosses are typical cave fare.
You're asking for a Cave game that's also not a Cave game. If you want to alleviate the micrododging that is Cave's main gameplay mechanic, you're either going to play Dangun Feveron, which isn't a bullet hell, Espgaluda, which allows you to slow bullets down, or Mushihimesama original, which deals in less-but-faster bullets than their typical stuff.
>>
>>173720143
I already tried Espgaluda. It's fun, but I always die on stage 4 :(

just playing one game only until you achieve something very difficult for you, not just kusoclear, but really trying to push yourself to the limit. that's my idea of it at least, maybe going for world record and beyond is more accurate.
>>
>>173760138
>that's my idea of it at least
my idea is that it's your main/only game you're playing
>>
>>173760396
imo if you have time for other games(and especially other shmups) you aren't going full shmup. but i don't think it absolutely has to be a game you'll play till the end of times, afaik most japs get wr(or something close to it) and then move on, but while getting it, they don't play other shmups and play as much as they can, not just for 20 minutes everyday until they die, they really push it, which is what full shmup is in my opinion, to really push that score/clear.

At least it's merely an issue of size, rather than design. Whose idea was it to have a skirt that parts and exposes the entire from of the crotch?

>>173794075
Mahou Otome has this rather shitty element to it where sometimes, if you're using compatible familiars your support skills (such as bombs) will be powered up (and thus gain more points when they destroy stuff). This is determined by the RNG, so if you get bad RNG then your skills will be weaker, snuffing some of your scoring potential for the stage, and there's nothing you can do about it~

Well... somewhat. Increasing intimacy with the support familiars in question can raise the odds of this happening, but it still only caps at like 75% chance so you can still get fucked over by bad RNG. Honestly, I haven't a clue what they were thinking with that...

>>
>>173794075
depends on the nature of the rng, batrider for example has a ton of rng that isn't about survival it literally means you can't score as much as nothing you can do about it and we are talking about discrepencies of 500k+ in some instances. Guwange catspider has the kind of rng that can give you unavoidables.

>>
>>173797507
That's actually something many shmups have. It's there to actually give zako enemies the chance to even enter the screen. CCWI has it too.
>>
There really should be more games making use of a tate mode, not just shmups.
Playing a game in such a portrait mode gives a whole different feel to it.
>>
>>173802175
You can use your graphic card drivers to rotate the screen if you want, no matter what application or game it is.
>>
>>173803065
Yes, but it would be still better to have an option in the game for this.
>>
>>173802175
It's rather pointless

Horizontal display orientation is common because that's how our eyes and field of view works and most games are designed with this in mind

Tate mode is mostly a vertical shmup gimmick because they were designed for vertically oriented displays. It feels better because in tate mode you get to run the damn thing in higher resolution. Games that aren't designed for this will most likely feel wrong, especially first person games.
>>
>>173809891
Thanks for stating the obvious, but I was also talking about games that make use of it.
Games like Catherine for example could make use of it. Or a game like Shadow of the Colossus also could make use of it if it was programmed around it, so that you can see the giants better.

Danbo got butthurt by not making enough shekels off blue revolver so instead of banking the small but satisfied and potentially loyal fan base moving forward to future projects he instead decided to abandon the entire project taking a massive shit in the faces of said consumers, if he had bothered to add leaderboards i don't doubt that the fans would of felt motivated to promote his game more and help gain him a reputation but no he's to childish and incompetent to understand elementary level marketing and public relations so shot himself in the foot instead.

I do when it's at the cost of actual choice, touhou and waifuism are the biggest cancers this genre hav ever dealt with and a big part of whats scaring people away from trying the games because it's immediately associated with pedos and weebs both things average person wants to exterminate.

Is it worth going for 1cc on the hardest difficulty if I'm new to the genre? Does it actually make it easier to move from lower difficulty levels?
>>
>>173978672
Depends on the game, how you learn and how well you handle frustration. It's good to play lower difficulties to familiarize yourself with the levels and attacks, then you can adjust your strategies on the higher difficulties. But then if you start off with the hardest you'll have far more pressure to learn so that might help a lot. It will also be incredibly frustrating.

A shitty waste of time
>>
>>173981210
Replaying most levels gets insanely boring in R Type, it would be a much better game if the scoring was more interesting
>>
>>173983323
It's already hard enough to kill as many enemies as possible, so it doesn't really need scoring.
>>
>>173985828
No it isnt wtf are you talking about, not to mention hard doesn't mean good. just because a game has a few basic boring ways to optimize it doesn't mean the scoring is fun
>>
>>173986484
>No it isn't
Yes it is. It's basically impossible to kill all enemies in R-Type games.

R-Type and Gradius are the most successfull shmups ever. I think they did fairly well without scoring multipliers. Not everyone needs autistic Cave style scoring.
>>
>>173987015
Only because the competition was just as primitive right now players seek out games with more intellectually stimulating scoring systems, simply because they are better
>>
>>173987175
Only autists who spend thousands of hours on the games seek out games with convoluted scoring mechanics. Most people are completely satisfied if the main challenge is just a 1cc.
>>
>>173987391
Yeah so people who care about the games, and those are the players developers should consider when making games intead of pandering to casuals. Unless they're only in it for the money and nothing else that is.

Shame it doesn't do this, when you add controller/screen etc lag it works our similar to worse than pcb but still to little to notice and the games have less slowdown generally so they are harder. Not >>174099153 anon but I have similar setup

You don't need "portrait capable" monitor, most if not all monitors have standardized VESA mount.

You just need to buy a rotary arm/stand and replace your stock mount with it. For more specific information refer to your monitor manual and google.

Probably the only thing you should worry about is vertical viewing angle (which turns into horizontal when you turn the monitor). My display has very poor vertical viewing angle and it skews colors a bit unless I sit perfectly. It not noticeable during the game but noticeable on static images like in the menu.

The homing lasers in Dogyuun are so good! I wonder how they did it that the lasers stay on the ship while moving yet still bend to the target. That's the one thing I don't understand about homing lasers yet. Ikaruga homing lasers have this too. They always come straight out of the ship even while moving, that's why they look so good.
>>
>>174138074
Can't you just add the player's vertical or horizontal movement to them until they start bending?
>>
>>174094125
>>174127752
Meh, I haven't seen enough shmups to do this research for you

Problem with good ideas is that they will be done to death because they're good, so you'll have to put work in research/prototyping if you want something original. Maybe write down 100 ideas (without thinking much, just write down whatever mechanics comes to mind) and review the list next day leaving only 5-10 and prototype them.
>>
>>174138476
That's what tried too, but I couldn't get this to work.
I don't know how make them follow the target after a delay and don't know how to make them follow the player movement only for a short time.

Maybe that it could work if I could find out how to do this.
>>
>>174138732
It's hard without knowing how your lasers work, but you could either create a seperate object for those static lasers that follow the player and then have the homing lasers spawn while destroying the original object, or use a variable that activates the code you use to home in on enemies after a timer runs out.
>>

>>
>>174163638
if you ignore the memes from the STG cult, jamestown isn't that bad. it was successful because it's NOT set up like arcade STG. it has levels so neo /v/ can feel the """"""""""""progression""""" and not be afraid of the """""""artificial difficulty""""""" and """""""damage sponge bosses"""""". it slowly increases difficulty to appeal to neo /v/ tastes in """"""""""""pacing"""""""". there is an arcade mode where you can aim for the 1cc but it's an unlockable afterthought side thing.
>>
>>174163638
It's not too difficult, it defaults to doing one stage at a time instead of the usual arcade run, it has ships to unlock and an in-game currency so that you feel a sense of progression as you go, and it has a challenge mode which a lot of people tend to enjoy.

It's also been in several bundles, which is the real key to it and CCWI's success.

That's because STGs, by nature, are very short
Unless you take interest in it to replay and practice it, these games literally have 20 minutes of gameplay value

I think more shmups should have item shops that sell shit like waifu pictures, ship skins or continues, it adds something for people who don't care about 1 credit clears or perfecting scores. Just don't lock anything of value behind it.

Aside from a small handful, the scoring systems suck. The levels themselves are also not terribly interesting, and I don't like the "fire then fuck off" system a lot of enemies follow. The characters are also really one-dimensional, at least in the games; they don't even really talk about what's going on until stage 4 or 5, and even then it's not interesting.

I've kusocleared every single Touhou game, and seriously intend to score PCB someday when I've got the motivation and time to throw at it. I listen to the music from the games all the time, and have read several of the manga.

Here's something else to think about those who preach "diversity" and "tolerance" run and turn places like shmupsfarm into the complete opposite where everyone has to think roughly the same and operate within very tight lines whilst our community here contains real diversity because of the respect for freedom we encourage and uphold, we have waifu fags, cave drones, touhou shitters, legit pedos, raiden grunts, ikaruga defence force, health freaks, kuso players, competant players, pooey pazzy tier players, politically lefts, politically rights, trannies, degenerates and johnson all under one roof in harmony, funny isn't it?

normal mode isn't infact it's very easy when you have a general idea of boss attacks, advanced gets pretty hard yeah if you're playing for score because the deaths are more finely planned and the milking takes a whilst with some being very risky and the game as stated is very long. Rng is a stronger factor in nutwiper to with for example discord giving you anything from sit in one spot fondling your tits waiting for him to pass out to over laping spam walls of death with dildo lasers zooming around.

>>174247416
Yeah, when diversity and tolerance become enforced requirements in a community, it tends to take on the exact opposite attributes. Everyone thinks the same, acts the same.
Of course communities share interests and thoughts, it doesn't have to be a bad thing. And it doesn't necessarily have to do with having user-accounts or not, like shmups11 in comparison to 4chan.

When you get punished for holding different views than the establishment, that's when shit gets scary.* It happens all too often nowadays.

*Or rather, it would be scary if the people behind it were, I suppose a bit more assertive, a bit more like the USSR or 1940's Germany; might be a weird comparison though

I agree. To be honest, we could barely finance this, it is 100% self financed and independet. As a result, it's not a very visually appealing game. However, we put a lot of effort in the gameplay, level designs and user experience polish (performance, etc.).

>>
>>174285606
I just noticed when I tried to bomb that there is this dimension-switching mechanic in there that you can switch to and from all the time, that gives you completely different enemy formations and bullet patterns and lets you evade hard bullet patterns if you want but gives you other stuff to deal with instead.

Now it makes sense why you have these purple shadows flying about the screen and a function to increase this vision. They show you what lies in the other dimension!

That's quite interesting. It definitely looks like a work in progress, but the gameplay is solid.

that's super ugly ship and an ugly game desu senpai. if i had budget restrictions i'd make it minimalist, i.e. something like geometry wars, but it's probably too late in development for that. you'd better make it like 1$ on steam sale, then it will sell regarldess of graphics, take a look at how cheap star saviors for example, though that game is a lot prettier(aside from character portraits in between missions).

Just gonna say that you don't need big budget graphics to look good

Look at backgrounds of Ikaruga or Alltynex 2nd
They have less total polygons in one scene than one of the houses on the screenshot background (are these houses from asset store?), but make better use of what little they've got
Look at screenshot posted in >>174284770
Why buildings don't cast shadows and unlit walls are pitch black? That's not how lightning works. If you look outside, buildings do cast shadows and walls unlit by direct sunlight are actually relatively well lit by sunlight reflected from ground. There is a clear highlight coming from the water in the distance, and the ground is well lit, so there must be reflected light.
Also is it even sunlight? Why roofs are dark while walls are lit? This is almost impossible with sunlight, maybe only when horizon is perfectly clear and the sun is below the horizon. It looks like something exploded on the ground. Why there's a highlight from the water in the distance then?
Why there are surfaces with normals looking in the same direction but with different lightning (ship and enemy model are lit in front but the buildings to the right of them are clearly not)?
Why there are just houses scattered around without any other features? What's up with these square bases? Buildings seem to be very detailed so it makes overall lack of detail look off.

Not saying that bad graphics kills the game, gameplay is important, yadda yadda, but just saying that you don't always have to go after detailed models and complex lightning, even if you have access to those, because it doesn't automatically makes things better. Something to consider for your next project.

>>
>>174322689
Hello, thank you for your thoughtful feedback.
Yes, low budget doesn't necessarily mean crap art if you have talented artists. However, bigger budget usually means access to more talented artists.
About the lighting, there are many considerations here: bullet and enemy visibility was a top priority; and yes, ships and backgrounds are lit 100% independently, and most of the backgrounds are this dark so we can have visual contrast with the ships to make them completely visible. Ships have a completely static light source.
There was no way to have projected shadows if we wanted constant 60FPS on such older machines as we aimed for. Real time or baked projected shadows have a great impact on performance and we just cut them altogether.
Thank you and I hope we can improve in all these aspects in the future.
>>
>>174322689
treasure has/had top tier artists, no amount of fixing small errors will make this game look good, you can't polish a turd.
>>174324910
i played the demo on norml and it's total turd, the patterns are just plain dumb, bullets come in very artificial, almost straight lines. often it feels like you want me to bomb(change dimension or whatever) instead of trying to dodge becouse going through those lines is so risky it's not worth it. forcing player to bomb is not a good design. when is release btw? becouse this feels like very early alpha, but it says 0.9.

Shmup music is great because it isn't like most regular music. But that's not because regular music is pretentious, it's because videogame musicians often think outside the box because regular music doesn't fit most videogames.

That being said, I fucking love videogame music, I buy a lot of soundtracks even. But with a genre like shmups, I have to sometimes turn it off even if I really love the music. If I have to grind the same stage or route I will have to eventually put on my own music for the sake of my own sanity and out of respect for the game, because I don't want to end up hating its music through endless repetition.

It can be anything from Ambient to Drum & Bass to Prog. Rock or Shoegaze.

Of course it is. Regular music is boring emo shit with minutelong self-masturbation. Musicians are like rock-stars, overpayed snobs who think they are the shit, while people who make shmup music are just regular people who like video games. That's why regular music is so pretentious compared to it.
>>
>>174344170
LOL!
>>
>>174344170
Ridiculous. A lot of music is made out of passion by people who work full-time jobs, while there's a few lucky ones that just barely manage to make a living with it.

Then there's the real big ones but the top 50 charts and the people in them aren't indicative of what music or the life of a musician actually are. It's a wide spectrum and you can find talent everywhere, whether it's underground or perhaps unexpectedly in the charts.

Probably just bait though.
>>
>>174344170

Did Degica ever finish putting up that Mushihimesama guide they had going last year? Did they ever do a DFK guide like that, either? We have to stop Degica. They are ruining any chance of the PC becoming a legitimate platform for shmups with their half-assed cashgrabs. Not how it works at all, you're ignoring countless factors that influence a musician's income (the style of music they're pursuing, the platform they're using to spread it, whether or not they play live, merch, marketing, etc) along with connecting it with quality which is nonsense. I'm not ignoring anything. Fact is if you ar really good at your shit, then people also will buy it. It's the same in art. Artists who whine that people don't buy their stuff simply suck. No, objective. The fact that CCWI has individual tracks for every single boss, and even 2 OSTs at once, already shows that the guy put a lot of effort into this.

>>
>>174368615
Good artists really aren't rare at all. Go to any recommendation thread on /mu/ or any thread that isn't about stupid meme shit and you will leave with plenty of good music to listen to for the next year in no time.
I have so much music to listen to, between artists that I'm already a big fan of, to legends that I've yet to listen to, to obscure newer artists that I don't know much about aside from hearing a few very promising previews.

It's gotten to the point that I just have to ignore bandcamps, /mu/ and youtube music entirely so as to not keep amassing a backlog of music.

I've recently gotten into Vocaloid music as well, and that is an entirely new world of all sorts of music with synthesised vocals being the only thing they have in common.

All it takes is an open mind and you'll find that there's more to music than just following one genre or one artist or one way of doing things, and that there isn't very little good music, there is actually way too much of it.
>>
>>174369415
>wtf does this even mean?
It means the soundtrack sounds a bit unpolished and raw, compared to OSTs from modern cave games for example.

>>174369431
Doesn't have to do with making money. It has to do with what you actually want to do.
Musicians are loud, and extroverted. They like to stand in front of crowds getting their balls sucked. They are nothing but attention whores.

People who make video games on the other hand are social outcasts. They get shit on from all sites for spending times on video games. They don't give a shit what others think, they just do what they want to do.
>>
>>174370015
Yeah, you will actually if you filter through the fotm shit. There's a very large variety of music being shared on /mu/, it's practically impossible not to run into stuff you will love after a bit of searching.
>>
>>174369931
>implying quantity is unimportant

Not to shit on CCWI by any means, but its OST isn't that great really. It's good. It does have some great tracks, but it also has some rather boring ones. The boss tracks especially are really bland.
