There is a confidant that gives you more timeslots(Temperance) and one that gives a bonus to skill/friendship gains(Fortune), both cost money to advance, but I think prioritizing those is key, some links like Sojiro's also increase stats.
Clearing the palaces in one go is also harder than in P4 imo, getting SP Accessories from the clinic helps here
