When people bemoan the death of lowsec they aren't talking about FW or some small corp living in a lowsec pocket somewhere.

They're mean groups like Snuff, Project Mayhem or Shadow Cartel who can hit above their weight and take on nullsec groups because their average member is richer, more experienced and has higher SP than sovnull players. Even PL started out as a lowsec alliance.

Their corp and alliance level income comes from controlling lowsec moons and POCOs and that's what they mostly fight over when they're not busy bullying smaller groups.

Before CCP added LVL5 missions lowsec groups were much smaller and poorer compared to the large nullsec alliances. With lvl5 income they were suddenly able to easily field expensive, faction fit subcap doctrines and cap and supercap fleets large enough to contest lowsec moons.

For context, I have literally never played this game, I have only just started researching it today, anything I know is based off reading two dozen articles and a couple of youtube video about the game

I haven't played for nearly a year now but I have no reason to think this info is out of date:

You have a few routes here, some will work and others won't.
1) You start your own corp.
Let's say you start your own corp, and are lucky enough to get one or two people to join you. Bear in mind, it's likely only going to be you since mining corps aren't exactly attractive to anyone that isn't bottom of the barrel feedstock tier player.

You could try capturing space somewhere using an entosis link, but whoever you take it from is likely bigger and better organised so you'll get stomped into dust before you can capture anything independently.

You could try joining an alliance with your corp, but I am almost sure that finding an alliance willing to take on a 4 person corp full of fresh meat is impossible.

You could look into renting a system with your small corp but then you have to deal with monthly payments and other asinine shit that comes with rental programs.

Let's say for the sake of argument you and your four person corp gain access to a reasonable nullsec system with reasonable ores, and you are all mining in barges, so earning no more than 5m/h. You then have to decide what you want to do with that ore. You could refine it and build things with it - but then who are you going to sell the items to and how? You'll need 1b to buy an astrohouce station and even more daily to keep the market open and functioning in fuel cost.

Let's say you don't operate a market or make things and you transport the ore to hisec, then you're going to need a jump-freighter, jump-freighter pilot, and place to dock the jump-freighter (again, a 1b astrohouce.)

You could do it, it would be a herculean effort, but then again a bunch of new players who showed up here and wanted to go into Wormholes almost succeeded, so nothing is impossible.

Your best bet if you really want to go solo is to just rat in a Vexor Navy Issue. It provides liquid cash and then you can scan down wormholes to hisec if/when you need any products.

There is already a well-established salvaging corp operating in high-sec and any large nullsec alliance will have their own salvagers, so you'll likely find it hard to make a career out of it without joining a large nullsec alliance. And as >>173270003 said bounty hunting is not a viable career. Bounties only pay out 20% of the destroyed ship's value, so even if someone has a 100 billion bounty if you destroy their 100m ship you'll only get 20 million. As for exploring I'd hardly consider it exciting. It's a nice way for newer players to get a decent income but once you can get a t2 cloak you're unlikely to die unless you run into a gatecamp or there's someone cloak camping a relic/data site you warp into, so any PvP encounters you have while exploring will be very one-sided.
