Playing some AOE2 again. It seems to be Imperial Age simulator. All the other ages are just building up, except maybe castle. But as soon as a castle goes up you need imp trebuchets to take it down. There's not even any reason for there to be military units in dark at all. Feudal is not much better, you really can't get a good raid in until 3/4ths past the tech tree even. I understand the town center is there to prevent early raiding but it's honestly too effective.
Most of the fighting takes place in Imperial. Honestly it's like this with most of the "age up" style games I've played. Including rise of nations. It's just spamming upgrades until you hit the endgame and then the fighting can actually begin.

Empire Earth seems much better balanced, with meaningful fights taking place all along the tech tree, maybe it's just because it's such a deep tree with so many ages. But I think the upgrades are probably paced better compared to the cost and effectiveness of units. You have viable means of overcoming defences even from the stone age. And a well placed early volcano can be just a devastating as a nuke.

You're not wrong, but as has been previously pointed out, making a new language for each game is exhausting.
I do sometimes give planets relevant names; they'll usually relate to something I recently did in-game. Last playthrough I made a colony at the same time as I was fighting the Stellarite Devourer and called it Corona's Wrath, that sorta thing

Yeah I mostly name ship types after succesful generals/admirals. Planets I name after leaders in general, science planets after good scientists specific. And if I play spiritualist I sometimes come up with a few gods for a pantheon to name my planets/stars. But coming up with a new language each game to have logical names is to exhausting for me.

Extended life time, faster growth, etc.
Traits that increase productivity are a waste because they only work for one resource and they can all be engineered later on based on your needs.
Even more so in Utopia where you get more trait points.

That's not true nigga, stellaris is by far their most barebones one, every other single paradox gsg offers much more ways to play it and enjoy it across multiple games, even fucking eu4 which is still meh in itself.
I still kinda like stellaris theme and some ideas and I think they can actually do something worthwhile with it given time but as of now there is zero things to do in the game but navyblob. This utopia slight rp flavor is nice but it's not gonna turn shit gameplay into decent gameplay.
