I used to play tekken 3 religiously in high school with friends, didn't know anything about frame data back then but I could do all the combos with all my favorite characters. How has the game changed? Anything I could study to stave off the hunger for more? Played a bit of 4 and 5 but it was just one weekend each, for fun with beers.

You learn it by playing the matchup/character just like you'd learn anything else in a fighting game. If someone keeps repeating the same combo, you'll notice the pattern of the hits, and you can tell what hits your character since they have different pain animations for l/m/h attacks. If you notice the person keeps countering the exact same thing, you can counter-break or mix it up more.

You CAN guess but the don't be shocked when you get a full combo in the face.

Your only choices then are Smash, SFV, KI, and maybe Mahvel.

Most accessible is probably KI since you can gorilla mash out combos and there's a combo assist option. You'll still get bodied by people who actually know how to play though.

The new Guilty Gear has an awesome tutorial and challenge/mission modes. Unfortunately GG is one of those games where you'll spend entire rounds against good players trying (and failing) to block a seemingly endless torrent of offense. On the bright side, comboing is pretty easy because timings are lenient. And while it seems like you're losing harder, you're going to get just as rekt in SF or any other fightan. It just feels better because you see you opportunities to act more clearly.

Just gunned down everyone at my locals but I shared some Pepsi with their dying corpses so it was cool.

KOF 14 2.0 is pretty fucking great, but it'll take a bit to see if the DLC characters ruin the game, Rock and Whip are both a bit cancerous already for different reasons. 13 shit the bed when it introduced DLC, as 3 DLC characters made up 60% of the viable characters at the end.

On the other end, Eleague might save SFV for me, those matches were great and the commentary was just hype and modern enough without being cringe ("Real J Weezys"). Watching Norcal Rivals after it was like breathing in a rank fart during a good movie. We'll see if regular Eleague keeps the quality up or if other tournaments make Season2 seem worth it.

Injustice 2 is still looking like a stillbirth, the animations are still janky which will hurt long term sales and they appear to only be marketing their stuff to heavy Injustice 1 fans and the few pros who dominated the market by refusing the fix glaring issues with its design and animations. Its still a tossup though, SFxT COULD have been successful, but they never took the proper steps to secure it longterm.

GGXrdR2 is looking to be a pretty definitive anime game. How will Blazcucks even compete? Joking aside it really does look like the superior game. BB has that 00s era KoF shit going where they refuse to fix long term issues.
