Ty anon, so far it's been going great. Just finished lair, had a few close calls but aways pulled through, the worst was an ice cave. Everything there was immune to my stuff. Statues took forever to kill, ice fiends were very deadly and the Reaper at the end almost ended me, but I got through by spamming zombies. It's funny, I used to always wonder why people called kiku OP but now i see. My piety didn't even go down a single * and I used corpse delivery at least 6 times.

>>172955068
>implying I don't use both
Staff of Death while i'm moving around, then if anything gets close to me I switch to sword and cast excruciating. Why limit yourself?

Also should I go for the Necronomicon? I have a ring of wizadry and an artifact ring with +7 int on it. Pain is nice but I can cast excruciating wounds anyways

For that kind of character you ideally want actually good offensive spells

You can see all the spell lists here:
https://nikheizen.github.io/pages/spellbooks.html

Realms with good offense include Armageddon, Chaos, Daemon, maybe Death but you'll run into resistance problems.

As a mage i don't know what's best for a second realm, but there are two major points: you only have 0% minfail on realm 1 IIRC (or at least you have lower failrates), and realm 2 can be changed throughout the course of the game.
So some mages choose something with good utility/emergency options for realm1 (like sorcery which has dimensiondoor and clairvoyance) and then have their main offensive spells be realm 2

Not soon. Just fixing merge conflicts is pretty exhausting, and considering the item/inventory refactoring that happened - I need lot of time for that.

>>172970728
Am I going crazy or coul I have seen a loss edit of this?
>>
>>172972048
Pain is additive, like electrocution. In addition, Staff of Death scales much higher much faster than pain does. Let me pull out the numbers.
Pain brand inflicts 1d(necromancy skill) extra damage on necro out of necro+1 successful hits
Staff of death does (2*evoc + magic skill)/30 chance of getting 1d(1.25*(magic skill + evoc/2))-1 extra damage
Staff of death has bigger numbers.
>>

>>
>>172974739
Staff attacks at 0.5 min delay
Most other weapons attack much slower than this.
>>
>>172974813
But you are also forgetting that it does negative energy damage, which is useless against the dangerous foes.
>>
>>172974813
why do you insist on clinging to straws
and you even mock me by repeating my words?
0.7 mindelay weapons are 30% slower than 0.5 weapons yet most of them have far more than twice the base damage, eveningstars have three times as much
only if you're comparing to a dagger of pain your comparison is favorable, quickblades

why do you make it pain brand vs death brand instead of staff of death vs good weapons with pain
are you perhaps retarded

I actually misread what that anon meant as "hex grids" for some reason. His thing is retarded anyway.

But if we assume he meant something like hex grids,
>why couldn't you morph/rotate/transform the grid after each movement?
Because the standard way of outputting ascii-based interfaces is through a terminal, which is inherently rectangular and doesn't support things like that. Unless I'm completely misunderstanding what you're trying to say.

The whole "issue" of diagonal movements not being the exact same distance isn't even a real problem anyway. Even if you think it is, the proper way of fixing it is by making diagonal movements cost more.

I used to play incursion at an embarrassing amount when I first started getting into rougelikes roud 3 years ago, but it was buggy as fuck and borderline punished you for dying by having like 45+ minutes of character creation if you tend to plan that shit very carefully like I do. It is a prime example of a game that has an overly-ambitious devoper who lacks time/ample talent that other rl devs like toady or the dcss team does.

Really hurts because it DOES have potential, but lacked the love and care other big projects do.
>>
>>172998676
What I'm trying to tell you is that, like ?destruct, !resistance, and a zillion other items (looking at you, clarity rods), !tele level is an ultra-feelbad "practically never going to use it" item that makes the game less fun when you carry it around because you're that much more limited when it comes to picking up actually useful, good stuff. "Aw shucks, if only I'd had this ultra-specific use item for this ultra-rare situation" is not a good enough excuse to carry an item around.
>>
>>172998256
>Is Incursion the most complex/highest headroom roguelike out there
In terms of combat options+item/NPC interactions, it's up there, but I don't think it's the most complex.

Something I did learn from that game: if you manage to recruit NPCs, you can pay them to cast spells on/for you. Not very many, but reliable Cure Disease usually requires a lot more investment than a just gold.

Also, it reaffirmed that high Luck is ridiculous. Started with 17, got it to 22, and it really paid off. 10/10 would recommend: >180000 gold, >30 spare ID scrolls, >40 Healing potions, ~20 Dimension Door potions, 18 Extra-Healing potions, 4 tomes, some really powerful wands/weapons/rings, etc. by the time the game broke. I didn't even explore 25% of floors 3-6
>Is it fun?
Yes. I'd suggest starting with a class that allows/provides sleep-safety though: coup de gras is brutal, and with a companion or compensating spell, sleeping is dangerous.
>>172998701
>borderline punished you for dying by having like 45+ minutes of character creation

Anon, you know you can just reincarnate a character and have everything but their mana/HP rolls back, right? Also, how on earth does it take you 45+ minutes to chargen? Do you plot out all the feats you want in advance, but only play humans? There's not a lot to do in chargen: race, class, stats, 1-3 feats, then you're playing the game.

Assuming you've also done Stronghold, Labyrinth is a good place to go (and super easy to dive if you have detection and some way to tunnel). I often go down Angband through D24 or wherever the quest level is. Camelot is also an option, which I feel has better loot, but the later named knights are kind of tough, especially if they summon.

What I wouldn't give for a mass banishment scroll right now.

Will destruction trash all the artifacts in the vault?
>>
>>173001003
Yep. you can try and make some progress from the opposite end too.

Or you COULD try to draw out some of those enemies and destruct them in a more open area, but I feel like a lot could go wrong with that strategy

I think I've heard that nightmare mode always crashes incursion at the lower depths

probably has to do with the way it increases difficulty by increasing the effective depth. I guess it starts getting crashy when it gets to depths that don't exist in a normal-difficulty game?

it's not just mana storm, it does "psi" damage, which means every cast will inflict confuse, stun, fear, and sleep on susceptible monsters, including uniques

but that's what ddoor and staff of destruction is for
>>
how does one skill an OpTm in .19? I've never seen so much conflicting info. It's either "you must skill nothing but transformations since the bulk of your damage will come from better transformations" versus "you must skill nothing but unarmed combat since your main damage comes from unarmed combat" . And then there's people who insist you should skill stealth because you're an octopode and anything else will kill you by looking at you so you should go slapstab.
>>
>>173050753
I don't think you understand the point of skilling stealth
the skill you train for stabbing things is hexes
stealth is just for evoking feet
>>
>>173050753
If you can cast spider form above 40% then you have enough transmutations.
Stealth is for evoking feet.
There's no point to having super powerful forms if you don't have the skill to use it.
Dodging is underrated.
Once you're comfortable you want to get blade hands, then you win. There is no intermediate step, it's all just death.
>>
>>173050753
Training Transmutations fully is dumb, since they it just improves spell success rates and lengthens the duration. Damage isn't affected.

UC is the correct choice. An Octopode's Stealth skill is high enough for some investment in it not to be a waste -- but as it was said, it's not for stabbing but for running away.

Kill the dragons in melee range?
Unless you're a sorc with negative infinity AC you should still be ok
or if you're absolutely too squishy for that, you can run along the side of the giant lava pool by the volcano and pewpew the red dragons while standing safely on grass

>>173066216
recharging moves mana from one device to another device, so you can e.g. drain your wand of stone to mud to get more ice bolts, although it has a chance to destroy the "source" device
*recharging* uses the caster's sp instead, so if your wand of ice bolts is missing 105 mana it will drain 105 mana from you to fill up the wand.
if you're a class that has Eat Magic, you can also use *recharging* to refill your snack devices while resting between fights, since player sp recharges so much faster than device charges do
>>
also note that neither of the two kinds of recharging has any chance of blowing up the device that's being recharged, unlike vanilla angband
>>
>Trying out revised deathsword
I'm not even mad about the ultimate reremoval of the amulet slot, I finally feel like I can fight things before level 30 because I'm not made of tissue paper.

Still gonna miss those anti-summoning amulets though...

PS: Randarts on for Swords/Rings? I'm thinking yes.
>>
>>173066363
You're wrong but not completely, the main reason why nobody plays casters is because killing J always turns into getting a source of shard damage and blasting away which is really unsatisfying. No matter which build you do you always play it the same way.
>>
>>173067112
The amulet was bit excessive. In start it is kinda ok since it can compensate lot of the bad shit, but I figured that it will eventually be better just to rebalance the essences ( make common resists require more essence, rare less ), give bunch of AC and extra hp at get-go. Plus possibility of getting stunning ( plus earthquake/tele muts )
I haven't actually played a new game with the latest changes ( I win with the amulet version ), but it should work well enough to get through the rough start.
>>
>>173068793
Wait is their earthquake mut like staff of earthquake, or is it an earthquake BLOW like the mauler/samurai powers?

Because the latter would be ridiculously good on a 10d10 deathscythe, seeing as it stuns whenever the damage dice roll more than 49ish.
>>
>>173020872
bump
>>
>>173070163
Nah, it is a mutation, since otherwise I'd want to get it on/off. Plus it might be wee bit powerful otherwise. Although essences are rare to begin with.
It doesn't serve too much use however, since at that point you probably have staff of destruction, and earthquake is poor man's destruction anyways.
>>
>>173067373
As opposed to a melee class where you get a source of slay *evil damage and tab away? The reality is that casters have all of the drawbacks of a challenge setup with none of the benefits: Low HP, lowish AC, absolutely mandatory high stealth to ensure safe MP recovery, often restricted equipment, enemy resistances out the ass depending on build, retaliatory attacks, terrain considerations that preclude summon corridors and small areas, and before version 5.0.5 a hellish targeting system that requires a legion of macros just to complete the game in 8/3rds the time it takes a melee class to do the same thing.

The same issue with ranged builds - the mechanics get in the way of play (before the latest quiver implementation). Tabbing is just easier on all levels.
>>
>>173070905
>terrain considerations that preclude summon corridors and small areas

Found the badplayer!

And the very fact that a setup require(s/d) so many macros means it fails the path of least resistance test. 90% of the playerbase has already chosen a melee class instead just because they looked at some mage setup and thought "holy moly, no thanks, 2tedious4me." Just look at the ladder for proof. Just look at this thread for proof.

Why do japanese suck at procedural map generation? They usually have really interesting roguelikes in terms of gameplay, but holy fuck almost every single one (including commercial games like Mystery Dungeons) has awful room-corridor dungeons. OWH gets a pass because it doesn't have actual dungeons, and Maidensnow at least improves a formula by removing all walls and allowing you to hop between passageways.
>>
>>172999905
Speaking of breaking Incursion, which is better? Going Human and getting higher stat caps (with some like INT and STR being pretty easy to grind to max while some like LUK being almost impossible) or going Orc and getting capped everything and tons of resistances from corpses?

>>
>>173124227
I used to think about making one some years back, but I just don't have ideas innovative enough to not make a copy of an already existing roguelike with some flavour changes. Then you have to think of all formulas (pretty OK), THEN you have to code the whole thing and that shit takes a lot of fucking time, and finally you have to balance your shit and that's pretty nasty as well.

No thanks, unless maybe if you present me with an already existing system, setting and monsters, complete with numbers. Then I'll ONLY have to learn about pathfinding, AI, level generation and all other technical shit you usually don't think of when playing.

And you do all this stuff only to realize that your playerbase will be some 10 autists at most because nobody normal plays roguelikes unless they have pretty graphics, modern interface and a lot of crutches. Fuck this shit.

>>
>>173120363
Human is more powerful with the right feats, but Orc is easier to power up so unless you like grinding it's better to play an Orc. You'll miss those extra feats though, and some of them more than make up for slightly smaller stats. Off the top of my head, the Empower metamagic works on just about everything: Empowered Mage Armor+Empowered Spirit Armor stack, and can easily get you >30 natural armor. Empowered Might of the Oaks gives you +9 Strength (+4 to-hit and to-damage at minimum, not to mention all the other effects Strength has) for -3 Dexterity, Empowered Heroism gives +3 to-hit and to-damage, Empowered Invocation gives +4 to-hit, to-damage, and to saving throws, Empowered Endure the Elements gives a max of 33 Acid/Cold/Fire/Lightning/Sound resistance, etc.

Devouring doesn't actually give many resistances; IIRC it effectively maxes out around 7-10 for Fire/Cold/Lightning/Psychic, and ~12 for Acid/Sound. It can go higher, to a max of ~20, but you need to eat a lot of dragons for that to happen. The effective immunity to low-level elemental damage is nice, but it's best for the ease with which it allows you to max out your inherent bonuses to stats.
>LUK being almost impossible
Actually it gets easier the higher your LUK is. Since LUK makes dungeon generation better for you, it makes fountains appear more often, which with high LUK practically only give good results, which significantly boosts your LUK training. If you spend a lot of time on a floor where depth/10 > your level, it will increase the training incrementally until it reaches the max, at which point you can drink from a fountain and immediately level it.

>Anyway, how much of the mid and late game is sneaking around and not fighting?

Loads. The clock is always ticking, so if you peek in a room, and there's nothing but shit in there aside from three sword spiders you should probably just close the door. You can always turn on [S]tealth mode right before you poke your head in, then turn it off once you leave.

That said, Sil is mostly about Interesting Tactical Situations and using your character's skills to pull off sick combos. Example: shooting a dude with arrows to build up your Concentration bonus, so when he gets into melee you're ready to score crits. Flanking + Sprinting can let you run hasted around easterling warriors. Weapon choice is another important question. Ideally, you want a golfbag of three or so weapons to switch between depending on your situation. Crit resistant enemy? Use your battle axe. Shadow enemy? Drop your shining weapon for light. Dark corridor ahead? Switch to your shitty shortbow of shining or whatever and light it up. Easterlings or giants? Equip an item of shadows and fire poison arrows.

Getting stronger is really just a matter of better gear and dumping XP into your abilities. Don't worry about diving fast. Just run through the halls, grab decent gear, and kill what's worth killing. You don't even have to check the entire floor either. Just give it a good once over, check any vaults, then hit the stairs.

Edain pride.

Jesus Christ where's teleportation in this game

Also I thought 8 Will is enough to resist stat draining but something took my dexterity. Does it come back with killing monsters or resting or something or is it a permanent loss? Same with smithing, I saw all the resistance/+stat items cost a point of a given stat. What's really the point of making gloves or whatever that was of strength if it costs you strength?

Anyway, my 8th character out of 10 will be a smithing dwarf and I'll likely regret it.

How do I know what jewelry does in Poschengband? I've looked in the help file but there doesn't seem to be anything in there about the actual stat bonuses jewelry gives. For example I have an amulet that gives +0, +11 to whatever - what's that a bonus to?

What I found the most strange is that enemies don't seem to follow you down/up the stairs, so if you're in deep shit, you can try to run to the nearest staircase and it may actually save you. I'm done for now.

Curiously enough the first character got the furthest. What usually does me in is not being used to the fact that enemies can circle around and the noise levels. Just when I think THIS corridor is safe, some shit appears from behind, so I run somewhere else and it turns out to be even worse there. It gets me because none of the enemies chasing me would be a problem 1v1 or even 1v4 if only I had that corridor free.

One particularly funny death was when I barely managed to reach the stairs, climbed upwards and didn't even recover 10 HP before an orc unique with its band ascended the same stairs and appeared right in front of me.

Also I have no fucking clue what to level and a lot of the skills you can "buy" with xp don't seem to particularly worth it, so I spend it on something that's probably shit instead.

Well, I guess it's time to go back to Crawl.

Getting down the vault entrance is pretty straightforward if you've gotten to lair already, which is basically when you really want to start using shields, if you just level up some stealth beforehand and exclude any tough monster you find. The only problem would be if you found an unseen horror, which *is* a death sentence when the only option is teleport and you haven't explored the level yet.

Then it's just a matter of singling out the vault guard that has the shield, kiting him to a level with at least a 2x2 shallow water pond, evoking fist and retrieving his shield from his cold dead hands to fight the lair hydras.

Tile two is just frame/muffler/trunk/tank of whiskey.

The unicycle wheel is one of the wheels that is considered enough with just one (so that the actual unicycle vehicle is drivable). I think you also need the center of mass to be between all the wheels or some other requirement.

Not sure what would happen if I filled the trunk with anvils or something else heavy.

Yeah, they fixed it so you don't weld your seat belt (a piece of rope) to repair it, but now you can't actually repair it with a sewing kit without removing it first.
>>
>>173181573
>I think you also need the center of mass to be between all the wheels or some other requirement
That's the ONLY requirement, as far as I know.
You can replace the wheels on a unicycle/ shopping cart/wheelbarrow with anything and they'll still work, because being only 1 tile means that tile is always the center of mass.

C:DDA vehicles always make me laugh. They can always maintain a speed of >200 miles mph, but because of the size of the view screen and conditions of the road, you can barely go 100 if you want to keep your vehicle intact.

Slamming into Zs at 80mph and completely obliterating their body will never not be fun though.

I guess it assumes it's fine as long as the center of mass is on the same tile as the single wheel?
If you ever need to carry anything heavy, you can just weld a second trunk to the front and balance your suicide bike manually.

Secret tech for Demon: if Arcadia and Vikhor's Sanctum show up, you may go to the latter if you feel that your character and party are strong enough. This recent update has made aeras a lot less common there, so it is a bit easier. Doing so makes going through Arcadia even easier (not like it isn't hard, but you can get some good allies out of the sanctum like a nero and maybe even a kitsune, which makes the links of Arcadia pretty easy to complete).

are evasion based fighters viable in crawl? what's a good start to learn this style?

I'm trying to make a dodge-heavy longblade guy to get a lot of riposte damage, high elf was an obvious choice (that's not minotaur), but they're just so damn squishy.

my only experience with dodge-reliant builds was with stealth, and that's a totally different playstyle.
>>
>>173184921
Unless you are a tard (or an octopus or cat) you do not build an "evasion-based fighter" or an "ac-based fighter"

you should always have solid amounts BOTH defenses because of the way DCSS xp costs scale. Going from level 11 to 12 in armor costs the same as going from 0 to 5 in dodging, so focusing all-in on one defensive skill instead of splitting your xp between both is just stupid

I doubt you can use a spear through an intact windshield. You'd be protected from acid puddles, and most vehicle tiles take a while to cross.

I guess you could build a portable corridor or something silly and drag it around. Not sure if you could make it resistant enough to damage while still being able to move it by hand.

You don't need a pike, just something with reach. Pike is easier to use that way because 3reach.

Steel / Electric type archmage. Go for an accessory loadout that allows fall damage resistance, but also includes Thorns II or better to combat early-game lakitus.

What kind of years? Literal or figurative?
If literal, it got much more balanced (still not there yet, but you can actually die), NPCs are way less retarded and you can store vodka in vehicle tanks.
If figurative and actually just ~6 months, it's mostly tweaks and fixes because stable version """soon""" (valve time).

I can't even tell if this is supposed to be intentional. Sure, the ceramic disks might make it impossible to repair, but since there's also some kevlar in it, any asshole with a soldering iron can not only repair the thing, but improve on the design.

Orc and Elf are optional, so I don't really see your issue...?

More seriously, just don't go in until you have the offense/defense to sweep them. Sure, Orc is nice for some easy XP before doing the Lair branches, but you don't actually need it to at least *start* the branches. Just do the first few floors of each and then go back.

Speaking of the MBR? It's actually objectively better than the dragonskin. Without armor plates, you get two points more encumbrance, but slightly higher protection values and 2.5l of extra storage on top of it.
This particular specimen was hand-crafted out of scrap kevlar (probably from dog armor) and string.

I suppose that "provides little more protection over a regular vest" is accurate, if the "regular vest" refers to the "state-of-the-art, lightweight, flexible, bullet-resistant vest".
