did the infra arcana development version ever become good

the last time I played it I had D:1 fire hounds and it shit on melee.
>>
>>173206061
So much shit has changed that it's probably still unbalanced as fuck. In my couple test runs, I didn't notice anything too bad though.

Worth trying out just for the massive glut of new content. The new terrains and dungeon features are really nice.

Someone made a new /rlg/ thread but faggot janitors deleted it

Because it was ~40 posts early.

Can we talk about bloatform and summon bloat? Hydraform is all gimmick with no real practical use, by the time you can cast it, you have absolutely no reason to. It's weak as fuck due to low AC and actually dangerous to use, yet for some reason it remains as a level 6 spell.

Summon Hydra is even worse. You can already summon one with shadow creatures, but it's also incredibly weak for a level 7 fucking spell. In no situation is it ever worth that many spell levels.
>>
My greatest shame:

I want to get into Brogue, but I can't wrap my head around the control scheme. Are things like examining really only limited to the mouse, with no keyboard equivalent?

>>
>>173206895
You can play it solely with the keyboard, but the examine/targeting interface and travel is kind of bad.
>>
>>173206592
40 posts is too soon? Who decides this?
>>
>>173208567
Unless a thread moves very fast, there's no reason to make a new thread before reaching the bump limit. On /vg/, that's 750 posts.
>>
>>173208567
Well there's really no need to make a thread until bumplimit. On boards slower than vg you might wait for both bumplimit and page10.

And also, everyone was still posting in the old thread rather than the new one.
>>
>>173209017
Actually, there's no reason to make a thread before reaching the bump limit no matter how fast the thread is moving, because having more posts past the bump limit does literally nothing, and the thread will fall down the board at exactly the same rate no matter what, depending solely on the rate of posts and new threads on the rest of the board. There might be a case for it if you tried to make a general on /b/ but why the fuck would you ever do that?

How are you guys with roguelites? Are they discussed here? BoI and Gungeon etc?
>>
>>173171794
A bunch of them is based on glitches I encountered in Castle of the Winds when I was little. When I realized "heeeeey, this open source game lets me actually add them as features!", I totally had to do so. And then I came up with more and more such traps that also wanted to be added. In fact, I sometimes have a scratchpad with me so I can quickly write down new ideas if they come to me at unexpected times, and currently it's two pages worth of traps that still want to be added. Shall I take a photo of that scratchpad as proof? :D

Why would they talk about a real roguelike in there?

That's like posting about Overwatch on the TF2 general.
>>
>>173210263
Some wheels maybe.

I'd actually suggest modifying an existing vehicle instead of building one from the ground up. The best option is Blazemod tanks. Multiple engines take really high mechanics skill to install, so anything that starts with them is great. Even if they're all broken, since you can fix them for much cheaper than installing new ones.
If you can't find a tank in passable condition, taking any vehicle that's about the size you want still lets you skip a lot of construction steps. If you're going for the "giant dick-wagon" look, probably an RV or a semi truck.
>>
>>173217365
It's true. This is one of the most autistic generals, right up there with /dfg/.

The only thing still keeping the thread clinging to life is that unlike those fags at /lite/, we have games.

It's too late, I'm too far into this project to simply abandon it. Plus, I'm only 11% away from mechanics level 8, which i need for multiple engine installs. I figure by the time i dismantle my SECOND light tank for parts and install the rest of the framework and some appliances, I'll have reached level 8 and can finish it.

Remove draconian ghost breath
Having draconian ghosts breathe negative energy doesn't make sense from a

consistency standpoint (no other muts/attributes are ghostified) or from a

balance standpoint. I can't see any good reason to make draconian ghosts

significantly more dangerous if they are XL 7 or greater.

Devs don't like it because reducing max MP does absolutely nothing for any character that isn't a dedicated conjurer/elementalist, and they're right about it. Reducing max HP was proposed as an alternative and it was received a bit better but apparently not anywhere near good enough.

If you want to know what devs think, feel free to browse through years of ##crawl-dev archive and some super obscure and even more outdated dev wiki, because nobody gives a shit that you weren't around for the last 10 years. Ooooops.

You need to learn to appreciate the differences in people that make life beautiful.

PCB is like that nice thicc half-Nip girl, who loves to cook and watch terrible B-movies and weeb shit with you on a rainy Saturday.

Sil is like that one mousy (possibly autistic) girl you knew in school, nothing going on at a surface glance but will fucking milk your prostate dry in new and inventive ways every night. If only you gave her a chance.

DCSS is that sweet girl who moves in with you but slowly starts to change all the shit in your apartment and gradually becomes nothing like the girl you fell in love with. Sometimes, you wake up in the middle of the night and look at the stranger sleeping next to you with fear in your eyes, wondering what happened. You wonder if there's a soul underneath her pleasant, sociable face. She was your first, but you can only wonder how many cocks have entered every orifice of her body, leaving her cold and numb. Before you know what's happened, you're living a lie, but you cannot leave because she's all you know. When's the last time you enjoyed being around her? For the last three years, you've only been able to get off via masturbation, watching streams of other people fucking their wives, imagining how much fun they must be having. You think about running away from it all, finding a new roguelike, but fear of the unknown roots you to the spot. So you slide back in and wrap your arms around the creature you call your wife. Your roguelike. Your one and only. As you squeeze your eyes shut, you whisper to yourself: "What a noble sacrifice."

I don't mind.
It's more mimicking general behavior of R than Coffeebreak, frankly. Coffeebreak is sort of reducing flabbiness and just making quick dive downwards general attraction ( why I implemented double-descend in the mode recently ).
Dunno about better drops, since R doesn't really alter drop quality that much ( well, it does alter how frequently some consumables spawn and allow random artifact generation for jewelry ) and doesn't touch the power at all.

Oh well. At least that's an option, now. Thankfully I didn't merge with 6.0.X yet, so I don't have to have headaches about these smaller updates.

But what will I do with quick-mode since I have Coffeebreak already?

A roguelike is this:

Single player RPG
Primarily control a single character
Grid-based maps, with tile-based movement (Characters move an entire tile at a time)
Turn-based in a different sense than Civ series (individual actions like moving, attacking, drinking, zapping wands, etc take up turns, or fractions of turns)
Movement is not separated from combat (They happen on the same grid-based, tile-based maps, with no separate screen for combat like Final Fantasy or FTL).

Permadeath and procedural (RNG) generation are common and in my opinion, amazing tropes, but not required. For instance the sprint mode of DCSS is static, and is still a roguelike. Elona has optional permadeath, many static areas, and is still a roguelike. PCB is the same.

Roguelites don't exist at all.

Risk of Rain? Platformer.
Rogue Legacy? Metroidvania/platformer.
Binding of Isaac? Twin-stick shooter, or just SHMUP.
Nuclear Throne? SHMUP/twin-stick.
FTL? Strategy, RTS, possibly space-ship managing sim.
Don't Starve? Survival.

Elona, PCB, DCAA (wtf is that?) and DCSS are all fully roguelikes. And NOT roguelites.
>>
pseudo 6.0.3 is up FYI
>>
>>173264198
Roguelite is not a GENRE but it can still make for a decent descriptor that you can shove onto platformers/shmups/whatever: "game attempts to increase replay value with random generation + something permadeath-ish"
>>
>>173264198
>Roguelites don't exist at all.
Roguelite isn't really a genre, it's a descriptor or a "tag", similar to
>female protagonist
so that you know what to stay away from.

Minecraft has optional permadeath, and the procedural generation, note a roguelite though.

All I'm saying is those two features don't mean shit. Most old games have some form of permadeath, yet no one called those roguelites. And many have RNG features in their grinding/farming mechanics, but aren't called roguelites.

I have no idea why this trend started to happen to the roguelike RPG genre only, but it has basically redefined the genre at this point with so many people called games "roguelike" that aren't at all. Especially with the Steam tag that mixes everything together.

The plus side is real roguelikes are being found because of this, and I suspect the community is a little bigger because of it. That is how I found them anyways, FTL>realized FTL was another shitty RTS(I hate real-time games)>Risk of Rain>NetHack>delete all non-roguelike games except progress quest, and never look back.
>>
>>173264503
If the tag is describing difficulty, why can't it simply be known as difficult, like Super Meat Boy, Cat Mario, and I Wanna be the guy: Gaiden.

Why make it seem as if these games are somehow related at all to roguelikes?

Lair is the "loudest" branch in the game; noise has less effect there than anywhere else. If anything, it's the later branches with the mages and archers that are most dangerous. In Vaults, for instance, I've literally had some characters walk in, see a warden, get trapped, and die to an unending stream of ruk throwers and humans.

There's two separate issues, actually.

One where certain bits of a disassembly shouldn't really be possible to fail (the toolbox, for instance, or removing the battery from a laptop versus an amplifier circuit). The other is that item damage isn't tracked per component, so you have the nonsense where each item rolls for a chance at vanishing when disassembled (and if you luck out and retrieve all the components, you can then craft a pristine one out of the broken one somehow).

People who care about realism in vidya do not actually want realism, they want "sense" and "logic", which generally means short-sighted failed attempts at realism such as
>add 6 gorillion new items because they exist IRL, never balance them and never implement their real life uses, or implement them so badly they might as well not exist
>add 6 gorillion guns with tiny variations between them, but have those variations be totally arbitrary and not correspond to reality
>add soap maker profession but keep soap useless for 10 years of development
>add 6 gorillion alcohol types, but never design a proper "drunk" status that works as it should
>add quivers for bows, but never add the ability to put more than one arrow type at a time into a quiver

It's not just DDA, though it's the only roguelike example I can think of.
For non-RLs, Rimworld is plagued with realismfag ruskies who make shitty "realistic" mods.

Finally got my fragile patient to mid game under pk's mod with hordes. trying to decide if I wanna go archery, or get better at guns with the endgame of getting a laser rife or something. I'm using a glaive now, but I'm nervous about gettin mulched by Zeds in melee while I'm not paying attention.

I'm gonna try to go minimal bionics, and go down the avian mutation pathway too, just to see what its like. Anyone have any experience with that mutation path?

Also, what do you guys name your worlds in CDDA? Do you just pick random or do you choose some joke name to make yourself chuckle whenever you play?

What did he mean by this?
>archery or guns
Guns. Bows have been steadily nerfed and nowadays they're garbage for combat. You get <10 shots and then you're in melee and you never get out long enough for bows to matter.

That said, with high Strength Throwing is extremely good: no turns wasted switching from a melee weapon to a ranged weapon, high damage, ~60 energy per shot (about 1/2 a turn), and the skill itself levels extremely quickly. The only downsides are that:
1. the good throwing weapons are high volume
2. the good throwing weapons are resource or time-intensive
3. the throwing "weapons" like the sling and atl-atl are bugged or something, they are literally worse than no throwing "weapon"
4. since it levels so fast you quickly reach a point where everything is headshots, and some Zs have enough head-armor to be effectively immune
>laser rifle
Good choice. Laser weapons are excellent.
>nervous about gettin mulched by Zeds in melee
I've never used PKmod. Does it make heavy armor worthless? Because in vanilla an ANBC suit immunizes you to everything but hulks, and I think it's accessible for your skills.

I used to be a fan of skill rust, until an anon explained to me why it was stupid as hell. I've yet to turn it off, just cause I've forgotten. You can only take a single action in a "turn". If you're faster than monsters you can take multiple turns before they get theirs, but you only ever take a single action, and the default method of movement should be a single step in one of the eight directions. If your roguelike is on a hex grid there will be six directions, if you disallow diagonals there are only four directions, yada yada.
Non-traditional movement options like phase door and jumping are allowed to exist but they shouldn't be primary.

>>
>>173299242
Yep. It's specifically:
* +4 aptitudes for every skill until the skill is level 7.
* With every skill level after, the aptitude is reduced by 2, until it's -6.

So, +4 aptitude up to skill level 7. +2 from 7-8; 0 from 8-9; -2 from 9-10; -4 from 10-11; -6 from there on.

Plus, they have see invisible and "strong nose" (passively detect items).

I've seen you reference this a couple times now and didn't bother to respond. Since you're going to keep using as an example of realism failure I'll just point out that it only took ~4 years to implement its uses. For most DF's lifespan soap has been used to prevent wound infections and for personal cleaning.

>placeholder
>>
>Toady is a good dev guys!!
Yeah no
>>
>>173298045
It depends.

I would first specify what "actions" and "turns" are. IMO, an active "action" is different from a passive action -- a character can have multiple actions in a turn due to multiple passive actions occurring (e.g. shield blocking, attack dodging, etc.).

A "turn" is also a non-obvious thing. For instance, if you're "hasted" or whatever the equivalent, you might be able to take multiple active actions in a single turn (e.g. purposely moving two spaces before enemies who are known to move at regular speed advance towards you).

Balance is the key, I think. The player needs to consider their (active) actions, knowing that a couple of non-ideal moves can cripple them. At the same time, superspeed and even time-stopping might be acceptable if there are big enough negatives or if they're rare/difficult states to achieve.
>>
>>173301967
Yeah. That's sanicfast compared to the usually glacial pace of DF development.

But ferret recently buffed gaze attacks by reducing their cooldowns so it's been great, now you can get a charm or paralysis off every other turn with ego theft. It's not pure gaze tho because of sudden chill so maybe it doesn't count. I had that distract debuff and that's actually more thematic to a gaze build but sudden chill gives acc down and other shit over a huge area

The new not-gnolls in Crawl are fun early, you can branch into absolutely every single thing you find. Early blowgun? Cool, Throwing to 5-6 no problem. Spear of venom? OK, let me get a few points in Polearms. What's this, Book of Minor Magic? Great, Conjure Flame and Mephitic Cloud castable within minutes.

Actually this race is about the only one that can use poisoned needles without having points in Throwing through character generation.

I don't know how well will they do later on; I think you are forced to go some non-ridiculous one hander + buckler and rely on level 3-4 spells, with a few level 5s, as levelling over 11-12 is probably a huge pain in the ass; at least weapons crosstrain. Ash is likely one of the best gods too.

>The earliest evidence of settlements in the area of today's Berlin are a wooden rod dated from approximately 1192[27] and leftovers of wooden houseparts dated to 1174 found in a 2012 excavation in Berlin Mitte.[28] The first written records of towns in the area of present-day Berlin date from the late 12th century. Spandau is first mentioned in 1197 and Köpenick in 1209, although these areas did not join Berlin until 1920.[29] The central part of Berlin can be traced back to two towns. Cölln on the Fischerinsel is first mentioned in a 1237 document, and Berlin, across the Spree in what is now called the Nikolaiviertel, is referenced in a document from 1244.[27] 1237 is considered the founding date of the city.

>The Dwarrowdelf was founded by Durin 'the Deathless' in the far distant past, long before the creation of the Sun and Moon. Durin had awakened at Mount Gundabad not long after the Elves first awoke, and as eldest amongst the Fathers of the Dwarves was acknowledged as pre-eminent amongst them, a status subsequently inherited by his descendants, the kings of the Longbeards.

>From Mount Gundabad, Durin's growing clan "spread southward down the vales of Anduin", all the while "under attack from the orcs of Morgoth".[3] According to legend, Durin ultimately found "a glen of shadows between two great arms of the mountains, above which three white peaks were shining".[4] Within this heavily wooded valley, a long series of short waterfalls led down to a long, oval lake, which appeared to have a magical quality: "There, like jewels sunk in the deep shone glinting stars, though sunlight was in the sky above".[4] Perceiving these stars as a crown glittering above his head, Durin took this as an auspicious sign, and named the lake Kheled-zâram, the 'Mirrormere'.

Let's play Collateral Souls, /rlg/. It's a fun coffeebreak, and I think you'd enjoy it. I'll start.

There are a bunch of different backgrounds, but I'm picking Slayer, because it synergizes pretty well with the build I'm going for.

Collateral Soul's levels alternate at random between rectangles connected by corridors, weird cave-like rooms with pillars strewn throughout it at random, and cruel combinations of the two.

Collateral Soul has Angband-style LoS, except not asymetrical. That is, you can't see past corners until you're literally right there, but your enemies can't either. This is not wholly to your benefit; all corridors have at least one L-shaped crook, and I swear that enemies are spawned specifically in those blindspots because ~20% of the time there's something there.

Back to the map. The red I is an Imp; they are an early ranged enemy. Fortunately, they have a low effective range, so most of the time they can be killed before they fire a shot. They have an angelic counterpart in the lantern archon, but Heaven wants you double-dead too, so it's not like there's more than a cosmetic difference, effectively.

The Z is a zombie. it's a weak melee enemy. They have no other characteristics.

You're the @, obviously. You can press space or tab to target enemies, and then space to shoot. You can also bump into enemies to melee them. Your ability to melee or shoot enemies only improves with levels and perks; there are no items in Collateral Souls.
>>
>>173341006
>Collateral Soul has Angband-style LoS, except not asymetrical.
It clearly was asymmetrical last time I checked. I often spotted enemies without making them spot me and got spotted a few times without spotting anything (despite full darkvision).

I forgot to cap the first level up, but here's the second.

Level ups, excepting the two backgrounds that effect this, are self-explanatory. You pick 1 perk and get a boost to all stats.

Perks dramatically effect your game; the "assult rifle" for example changes your ranged attack, increasing damage, increasing the number of shots fired per action, and allowing access to advanced [Firearm] perks which further alter ranged.

As for the "Anon's feel alone" message, that indicates that the floor has been totally cleared of enemies. When that happens, you get a pittance of XP and are automatically moved to the next level.

I'll pick Aura. Berserker is rarely relevant, and the other two are exclusive with a couple other perks I want.

This is a hound archon. Their melee damage is large enough to remain relevant past floor 10, and they start to show up on floor 2-3. They have a demonic counterpart in the wraith, which is less deadly in melee but much harder to kill before it gets there due to its ability to ignore 75% of all attacks on turns that it doesn't attack anything.

Fortunately, both can be kited; though everything in Collateral Soul moves at the same pace, for reasons I cannot explain, the AI will refuse to move diagonally inside corridors. And since every corridor has at least one crook in it, you can abuse your ability to move diagonally to gain one tile of space per crook.

It depends on your talents. There are some really gamechanging hidden gems, like create forest and hide in mud, and if you get the android rocket-equivalent talents that's enough to kill dragons from range early on until your kit comes together. Plus various utility things like protection from evil and restore life/stats if you get them. But the melee damage for me was abysmal - 4.5 blow cap just doesn't cut it by the endgame, so this was a device/spell win. And if you start out with a bad stat/life spread, !newlife will reset all your talents, completely revising the character.

This is really stupid but it works, without full magic bind I can cast level 5 spells at 10%, so level 6 should be possible too. What hurts the most is the lowest natural MR gain in the game though, it's 2 per level which is 1/3 lower than the standard growth. You're pretty much required to wear two MR items at the very least.

What they don't realize (or realize but don't care about) is that it harms anything that isn't LOL TROG or BLASTER CASTER playstyles and it also removes any real inventory/playstyle choices after, say, D:5 because you won't have enough XP to rebranch. Well not really removes, but makes it harder, especially on species with neutral or negative apts.

They don't reduce xp when they trim the levels though.

When they moved orc from 4 to 2 and lair from 8 to 6 or 6 to 4 or whatever, they increased the density of monsters so the branches had the same total amount of xp.
>>
In crawl, classes are only helpful for early game, aren't they? You can pick Ogre Stabber and still just play with Trog?
>>
>>173367103
Yes. Picking a different background only changes which items and skill levels you start with, it doesn't restrict your options later on.

If you want to be a blasty caster it's best to pick a start that actually gets a spellbook, of course, but other than that distinction they aren't terribly important.

A minotaur fire elementalist is closer to a minotaur fighter than to a deep elf fire elementalist.

I'm trying to come up with some explanation for why I dislike crawl.
I think I got a good word for it: flat
Crawl is flat

That is:
>each spell just does its job, without much synergy
>no weird combos
>each god is totally separate
>effects of equipment are just summed up

For all its multitude of effects, it lacks interaction.
Compare:
>brogue has rings that recharge staves
>IVAN has liquid system where burning items can be dipped into pots to save them
>DDA has items that start fires, fires that spread, weather that kills fires
>Sil has feat combos like flanking+dodge

It feels like DCSS devs are going 100% for emergent gameplay as opposed to scripted, but I don't see it emerge that much.

The good triumvirate.
>liquid system where burning items can be dipped into pots to save them
If you get hit by napalm you can extinguish yourself by dipping yourself in water. Also saves your flammable items in older versions.
>items that start fires, fires that spread, weather that kills fires
You can burn trees with fireballs or lightning, the fires will spread. Fire attacks on frost clouds and vice versa dispel each other. Tornado.

I'm trying to come up with some explanation for why I like PCB.
I think I got a good word for it: thick
PCB is thick

That is:
>each ability is uniquely flavorful, if not particularly useful
>practically every setup is a weird combo that could've been cut a decade ago but wasn't
>every gameplay approach is totally viable even if it totally sucks
>sheer volume of equipment makes for compelling and meaningful selection and synergies; minimal loot "badfeel"

Compare:
>brogue doesn't even let you freely customize your character
>DCSS's stated design goal is to remove flavor if it serves no gameplay purpose
>Nethack's concern with interactions supercedes any innate fun to be found in delving

It feels like PCB's dev is going 100% for letting the player find the fun for themselves, as opposed to circumscribed "elegant" design, and I sincerely appreciate that.
>>
>>173376606
>>every gameplay approach is totally viable even if it totally sucks
The shitty combos tend to gravitate to wands though.
>>
>>173360013
>>The number one most important qualification that the developers discuss when deciding if they should add someone to the official dev team isn’t their design, art, or coding prowess. It’s their social skills.
/rlg/ will hate this, but if you're trying to improve on an established project with a massive team, it has to be this way. the alternative is a tornado of infighting and nothing getting done.

(this is part of why large projects, unless headed by someone incredibly charismatic and visionary, tend to suck)

personalities with talent should stick to smaller projects they can control

>>
>>173379127

>>
>>173377596
Bullshit. You're not wrong about the infighting, but you're stating the alternative is better when it's just another version of total project failure.
>>
>>173379437
the alternative is better, because the new versions that actually get released may be worth playing. at worst, if they are bad, just play the old ones
>>
>>173379524
I might be inclined to partially agree if it wasn't for the fact that we've seen plenty of these dev social skills and the reality does not match the elegant model.
>>
>>173378557

>>
>>173379772

>>
>>173379696
yeah. it could be a whole lot worse. do you think if every dev was as much of a prick as crawl's most notorious the project would work out?
>>
>>173379845
Of course not. But it's not working out now either, the social skills aspect is irrelevant.
>>
>>173379947
releases are coming out at a regular interval and some fraction of the playerbase enjoys them. sounds like success to me, even if it's not reaching its full potential

crawl's biggest problem is its enormous, shitty codebase that makes single-person forks too difficult
>>
>>173380082
>sounds like success to me
Sure, if you're a steam shovelware artist.

This is the internet, you can crap on a plate once a month, add one to the version number, and some dumbasses will thank you for it. That doesn't mean you accomplished anything. DCSS is literally just spinning its wheels instead of trying to achieve any sort of 1.0. I gave up on it when they removed the abilities from Vehumet that they buffed him with in the first place, because suddenly, nearly 10 versions later, they were too strong.

They just want to be seen to be doing a project, not finishing a project. That's why it's turned into grey slurry that, as you say, will never reach its full potential.
>>
>>173376606
>sheer volume of equipment
>minimal loot "badfeel"

The fact that you need to use autodestroyer indicates that there's a problem with loot drops, particularly when you're deep in the mid/end game.
>>
PCB autodestroyer could stand to be improved

doesn't vanilla angband have an option to autosquelch things that are strictly worse than what you currently have equipped, so if you are wearing ego gloves but only enchanted boots it will squelch {good} gloves and {average} boots
>>
>>173380456
>Sure, if you're a steam shovelware artist.
or, someone being realistic. it's the best such a massive project can reasonably hope for. if you want a bold, daring vision play something smaller

>1.0
it's a gigantic sandbox the devs like to play around with, they have no intention of "finishing" it

roguelikes aren't really ever finished anyway. they're in active development or abandoned
>>
>Hephaestus
>Hit 50d20

Yikes. Almost faulted

>>173380794
PCB has way more wacky stuff like crafting that would make Angband's autosquelcher frustrating to use.

Customizing your autopicker/autodestroyer file takes a few minutes, but it's a better idea for the long haul.

>>
>>173381408
Oh I missed that part. Yeah I agree. I don't think projects work without a leader. I don't want to use Violated Heroine as an example but it's what most glaringly springs to mind.
>>
>>173380651
If we were all actually PCB characters, we'd be able to tell the (+0, -1) long sword from Ringil just by a splitsecond of looking at them. But since ignoring a huge pile of worthless junk for a single sweet item isn't as easy in a video game as it is in real life (keep in mind it's the same problem with many loot-focused games), an autodestroyer must be employed. In real life we'd just leave the broken skulls and empty bottles on the ground. In lesser games they're just part of the scenery.
>>
GNOLL CRAWL
>>
>>173381852
The problem with loot drops is the fact that (+0, -1) longswords still even EXIST when the player is late enough in the game to be finding ringil
>>
>>173382115
Would you rather they just dropped nothing? I'd rather have a situation the equivalent of "aw shucks, your gamble didn't pay off this time but at least you got garbage ;)" instead of even occasional "you get absolutely nothing" like how it is with leviathans/high elven archers.

>>173382384
Yes actually I would prefer it if the game only dropped worthwhile items instead of piles of garbage.

The vanilla angband autosquelch is nice about this because it treats the squelched items as if they didn't even exist instead of PCB where they still sit around until you move to their tile and autodestroy them.

>need to waste a slot on an ability that does literally nothing besides make one skill okay
Still sounds kind of bad.

Is that additive or multiplicative, anyway?
>>
>>173388207
I dunno ask Ferret
>>
>>173387887
Emit sparks is always okay if you're fine with some randomness (And if you're not you're probably a Mind Howler)

Storm Strike is less damaging and reliable than AoE and has far less long-term staying power than darts, and if you're supporting your nukes with passives there are WAY danker passives, even in electricity

Storm Strike is truly ferret's greatest design flaw

I know some people think it's boring but I enjoy seeing my demons at peak performance. Plus, earth breaking as an orb of power is hilarious

Unless you think it's OP in which case I agree, but I've splatted too much today to care- I just want to tap the buff buttons and have my 186% speed demons take me to the top of the tower, occasionally showing off with my own Earth Break

buff builds make me want to kill myself yes
but i won't because i don't play them

Man, the Japanese just did not give a fuck. It's just like Combat Echizen and the various nip uniques.

Makes me wonder if there was some kind of overlap between Hengband devs and the Elona community at one point.

Jesus fuck the new species is beyond abysmal. Worse than Mu without a doubt, and not by a small margin either.

Fully bound under Ash was giving me about 1.5 skill levels on anything at 11 skill or higher at 6* piety. -6 apts on anything you would want to focus on is beyond unworkable.

I am legit at a loss as to how anyone is supposed to win a species that takes such an extreme investment to hit 14 skill (an experience investment probably comparable to getting a top-end 2H going on a normal species), can't get spellpower worth a shit because good luck hitting anything resembling a decent skill level in a spell school, has the WORST MR in the game (aka you are going to be paralyzed/banished very frequently without two or more +MR items), and generally is so completely dysfunctional that it actually manages to make the lategame hard just because of how completely fucked over you are in terms of skills.

Okawaru is probably your best god thanks to how heroism works (aka make you not suck in combat); Ash is doable but won't give you that much in terms of skills even when fully cursed, Gozag isn't bad thanks to potion petition, and Trog is probably an abysmal idea because focusing on any skill at all with this mess of a species is going to result in basically no progress past skill level 12 even into lategame, but then again it's Trog so it's probably still not the worst choice you can make. Makhleb is still good, but Makhleb is literally never not good.

I do not even want to think about how you win a 15-rune game with this species.
>>
>>173398640
Wait are ash skill boosts affected by your apts? I thought they were just a flat increase to levels like Heroism is... That certainly makes ash a lot shittier.

I don't know why the race has the weird low MR growth thing though, that just seems strange and doesn't really have anything to do with the race's main gimmick.
>>
i told you niggers to go with sif mama
1.5 skill levels is utter shit compared to just completely ignoring miscasts
it's also why sif mama isn't allowed for that one achievement during tournaments, because she's too strong
>>
>>173398838
I assumed the same, but they definitely seem to be affected by aptitudes.

Normally it's not that noticeable, but when all your apts are effectively -6 past early game, it is blindingly clear.

>>173399026
As if you can rely on spells as a primary form of offense with how shitty your spellpower is going to be. Good luck casting anything above level 6 with this species without dumping so much exp into a black hole that on a normal species you'd probably be pushing level 9 spells.

>>173398838
Apparently it was to balance out how they would have tons of consumables from early on to use later in the game. Because the idea that they would need those consumables due to being unfathomably underpowered was never brought up.

...I also forgot they are tied with Mu for worst stat growth in the game (sid/5)
>>
>playing modern DCSS
>>
>>173398640

I don't like how it's -6 instead of -5. That's just overkill
>>
>>173398640
Challenge accepted. I've got a decent loremaster build that can probaby go for 15 without stopping to be loremaster, and it's should be easier on this one.

How to win gnoll
>^Chei
>Pump int
>12earth 12uc 12 dodging 12 transmute
>gives statue
>gives iron shot
>enough melee/dodge to survive some shit
>>
The problem with the new species is that they break even at 11 skill, which is fucking nothing, it was never difficult to hit 5-10 with other species, but it's their entire gimmick
Push the break even point to 13 or 14 and they are good to go
>>
>>173406440
Do you need chei to get enough int to cast statueform?
Chei transmutations is kind of shitty and pointless otherwise, now that their base damage doesn't scale with stats
>>
>>173406527
Chei strength still gives a shit ton of str based damage
>>
>>173406515
>they break even at 11 skill
their apt hits 0 at 11 skill, but they've still paid much less xp than a human would have for all the levels up to that point
the breakeven point is a bit higher than that but I can't be assed to math it out
>>
>>173406619
It's literally in the files
https://github.com/crawl/crawl/blob/master/crawl-ref/source/skills.cc#L1519
0 apt hits 11 at 3450xp
Gnoll hit 11 at 3511xp

Except not going for iron shot.
>>
>>173406580
If you want to improve your melee as gnoll oka is 100% the way to go though. Going from 12 to 17 UC+fighting+armor+dodging is a huge buff, possibly better than the chei strength. (and definitely a lot faster)

>>173406667
>>173406726
whoops im retarded i thought 11 was when they hit +0 but that actually happens as early as 7
>>
>>173406778
Remember that you're going to sink a lot of exp into making your tmuts castable; you need that str and int to use bh+armour if you lack anything better.
