You don't get SAM back until you meet back up with Cora, who has an intact shuttle with an intact QEC device. Your shuttle's device was busted in the crash, in fact you see it when you first start to move around on the planet. I doubt the implants have QUC ability in them. ME2 talks about how expensive it is, is it able to be minaturized into an implant? Would the Initiative really pay for everyone's implants to get this shit?

I don't recall anything saying why SAM comes back, but it seems to me that the main point is getting to the shuttle and it's worked QEC.

And in ME1 the characters are fucking flat, barely ever interact with each other and stand in the exact same spot on the Normandy for their entire lives. They don't do anything, they just stand there ready to spout information on demand. Tali being "nothing more than a Quarian codex entry" gets repeated here for a reason. They're all extremely simple caricatures of common tropes with no depth to them whatsoever. The only time any of them exhibit any kind of complexity is when you're talking to Ash about her racist grandpa or whoever he was, and the paragraph you see after giving Wrex back his family armor, wherein he looks "thoughtful" or something (written, not actually shown). In fact, the only reason the ME1 story works at all is because it's a collection of functional, straightforward tropes borrowed from popular sci-fi that already work so well that they're impossible to screw up. Wrex is a generic tough guy badass. Garrus is the cool ex-cop. Liara is the intellectual waif.
