I think I gave up 5 hours into my last playthrough because Fo3's main quest is somehow worse than Fo4's. Also it's an old game, but damn.

Any recommendations aside from those in the OP? I know you guys have a hard-on for JSawyer, but that's it.

Make them actually care about the surface people, but reclusive as fuck. For instance, they should have made gen1/gen2 synths completely non-hostile since they seem to have infinite resources toward their creation. I don't get how the Institute is harmed in having gen1 synths roam the commonwealth, scavenging materials, building shelters. There was nobody but Codsworth at Sanctuary for DECADES, the Institute was fully aware of this, and they did nothing. I get that it would ruin the Fallout ambiance if everything was perfectly constructed and all that garbage. I think there should have at least been one place the Institute found that it could rebuild in peace (Spectacle Island, maybe? a random acre in The Glowing Sea?). The reason everything else is garbage is because raiders, settlers, scavvers, gunners, ghouls, and super mutants were constantly destroying gen1/gen2 synths before they could even finish cleaning off a plot of land.

Plus, the BoS still gets to hate them for hoarding technology and they can still argue that making gen1/gen2 are an affront to humanity or whatever because they're too human.

But then there's the railroad problem. What do you make of the railroad when the institute isn't "enslaving" gen3? My vote, you give them to Nick Valentine. Call 'em...I dunno. The Lonely Hearts. They're a squad of prodigy-level intelligence teenagers and young adults (orphans) that Nick employs as snoops and spies in the same vein as Varys the Spider and his little birds (from Game of Thrones). Same espionage shtick. Deacon stays the same, he's the only adult figure that the kids see every day, though Nick shows up frequently.

Fuck, I really love that idea actually.

Have the directorate be a directorate and not a puppet-show for the dictatorship it is.

The Institute is now divided into two factions: one that believes Gen 3s are mere machines and another that believes Gen 3s are just as human as anyone else.
Obviously the first faction is the dominant one, the others are a minority that has yet to prove their beliefs are founded in reality.

Father is a part of the the minority faction (believes Gen 3s are human). He's also tired of the Institute's ineffective methods and ruthless treatment of the surface people.
He secretly creates the SS, a Synth without a Synth Component, and sends him up to the surface. The game progresses as usual until you first meet Father, who is more apologetic of the Institute's actions and claims to be trying to change the system from within.

The quests continue as usual up until you're named director, when Father reveals to everyone that you are, in fact, a Synth.
Depending on how many quests you've done for each division, their reactions vary from reluctant aproval to instant banishment.

Are you to be accepted, you can then work from inside the Institute to terminate the Gen 3 program and redirect them into doing better thbings for the Commonwealth.

What you'll also find inside the Institute are several people who openly speak about how they can't wait for everyone on the surface to die out.
There is no other explanation as to why the Super Mutant program has gone on for so long. Why they used Kellogg for so long, even though they clearly knew of his brutality and cruel methods.

This also gives Father more credit when he says that he's trying to change the system. He wanted to shut down the Super Mutant program, but pressure from other division heads was too strong. It was only when Virgil destroyed everything that he could shut the program down.

I used bodyslide just fine for several outfits in Skyrim, and my previous installation of Fallout 4 from like a year ago. Now this particular outfit is throwing a shitfit to work even slightly. personally though I like how the new "super sledge" looks in relation to power armor though, because historical warhammers were deadly due to having a smaller striking area, not a head the size of a breadbox.

But if you're hurting for something with sword-like with size, modified boards look pretty good when modded to have spikes... it's essentially a post apocalyptic macahuitl.

Trick is finding one with a legendary effect solid enough to make it a decent late-game weapon.

I started working on porting it from some random Skyrim port a few months ago. I did a shit job weight painting it and gave up on positioning the gloves, though.
It's too chaste to keep my interest (unless I can find some good preexisting seams to break it up and reveal more skin), but maybe I'll try to finish the wings in the next few days.

Pretty sure this is everything you need to get it working in game. No esp; just replace some other slot 33 outfit mesh (the one BS builds to should be the right one; the other meshes are previous tries I think). Like I said, the weight painting is trash, but maybe someone will get something out of it.

Hey, /fog./ So whenever I try editing a weapon with GECK (in New Vegas), the damn thing crashes. I can edit pretty much anything else, like NPC inventories and stats and karma and all that shit.

When I try opening up a weapon to edit, I get "Garden of Eden Creation Kit has stopped working." When I click close program, I get it again. And THEN it closes.

This only happens when I open it through Mod Organizer (or through Wrye, opened through MO). I uninstalled the Steam version to install it manually, still doesn't work. It works properly if I use GECK through Steam directly, but then it only detects the base game's DLC.

Anyone ever have this problem? I've been having issues finding an answer through google.

Deathclaw island has only been attacked once.

Chance of attack goes up based on how much is in the workshop though, iirc.

Put like, 100,000 purified water bottles in the workshop and that might make the loot so high it will still get attacked.

okay I've got both Project Nevada+PMT deadlier combat+AWOP installed on my NV game. I'm overall happy with how fast and brutal combat is now, with two exceptions. One, the AI reacts too quickly sometimes and I think might aim too well. This was never a problem before because combat depended more on having enough ammo and stimpaks, but now that a fight can be over in half a dozen shots, it's become important to me.

Two, I'm staggering. Every time I get hit, I stagger and can't shoot. This is becoming bothersome, because when a ghoul hits me with a combat knife it's game over because I'm stuck in stunlock limbo and have to wait to die before I can do anything again. I don't mind having my aim thrown off when I get hit, but not being able to shoot or anything at all is really starting to annoy me.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this?

I maybe could do that, actually. Except making it ridable, I'm sure the Automathrone guys could figure that out. But even if I rigged it perfectly I think it would look like shit because it wasn't meant to be tweaked or animated, or given any other texture other than weathered bronze statue. There's a few Skyrim examples of this iirc, and a ton of really shitty looking minotaurs using low res low poly vanilla cow heads, and there's maybe five cows tops in Skyrim. The rigging jobs were fine, but the textures just ruined it. I'd need to find a platinum tier texturer to make that bronze horse look real in any way.

In my honest opinion, it would probably be better to take a vanilla Radstag, remove one of its extra heads in 3ds, remove the extra limbs, beef the FUCK out of its torso and legs, and reshape the head into a more horse like look, and remove the antlers. Although, your idea does intrigue me. I might mess around with that statue in OS when I'm done with my Plasma caster.

I don't see how that could be the case, given that one is a historical example of an actual warhammer and the other is a tabletop game aimed primarily at teenagers. The one posting space marines isn't even posting an actual warhammer, either. In-setting those weapons are thunder hammers or daemonhammers. The closest aproximation Warhammer 40k has to an actual warhammer as far as the weapon is concerned is the Corvus hammer, which actually looks like it's modeled on the medieval warhammer that was being posted.

The post that triggered the 40k fanboy said "here's a proper warhammer as a point of reference", which is in no way an opinion but a statement of fact. That is a real warhammer. That is what they look like. The poster was plainly communicating their reason for preferring the smaller super sledge design in the new game.

The post also stated "I can appreciate the desire for 'fantasy' weapons" along with a suggestion on a weapon that would suit the other poster's taste, which suggests they have no problem with the large hammers the other party seems to prefer. So, it doesn't seem like there was any reason to react like that in the first place, if the motivation is strictly retaliatory on account of taking offense -- and it's starting to look like that was the case.

Also your entire post there seems to consist of hot opinions rather than facts, which I won't state are "objectively bad" because that's the sort of thing a bum-flustered jackass would say.

Instead I'll point out that lighter weapons with smaller cutting edges, puncturing points, and so forth will always be more deadly than, say, novelty mallets. The reason? Larger means slower, and while capable of crushing, it is less capable of penetrating armor or concentrating its damage on a smaller area in such a fashion that it can bypass armor. And that is the main strength of a hammer used for warfare in the first place -- blunt trauma, delivery of force even through protection. Combat doesn't follow the principle of dropping a boulder on a coke can.

If you want to swing a pillar at people to look impressive, have at it, but there's no point in disparaging real, functional weapon design or people for preferring it.

And I say this as an avid collector of 40k miniatures. So do the rest of us a favor and stop making us look bad.

"Bigger" doesn't mean "more solid construction" or "less likely to break on impact". In a majority of the time, the larger a melee weapon is the less likely it is to maintain structural integrity, and not chip, shatter, or crumble. You're thinking in terms that don't necessarily apply to weapons of war. There is a reason why larger swords were the hallmark of truly talented weaponsmiths. Whether they were used in combat or not, they showcased a level of skill and understanding of metallurgy because they weren't as brittle as their size would suggest.

END - a decent stat, even if you don't die a lot it fucking annoying to have to heal all the time, high tier perks like ghoulish extend the "quality of life" aspect i like about this stat
CHR - i like it because i dont like missing dialogue options, i keep leveling it evenly as i play, you can start without it though - a "necessary" max stat, for settlements
INT - it gives you more XP so a good idea to start here early. good crafting and hacking perks too.
AGI - dont give a fuck about this, just here for the sneak perk
LCK - good to level later on for OP damage perks if you really want. you could also ignore it.

i think you're gonna get a really bad taste without modding. every time you play there will be something that annoys you that a mod will fix/improve. even just visuals and performance. its virtually unplayable out of the box.

Fallout Poo Vegass is just garbage and Chris "Scum" Avellone should just hang himself desu for creating such an embarrassingly poor sequel to Fallout 3 (which I consider the "true" first game in the series). By the way, he's also a massive SJW.

There is nowhere to explore, not atmosphere, no environmental storytelling. Navigating the Mojave is just a boring chore, there's simply nothing to do, apart from the massively railroaded main quest - which also makes no sense. Get shot in the head twice. Survive. Just lol. Obsidian are just morons, and it only gets more stupid and incoherent from there. Dialogue is so badly written, you talk to an NPC once and they give you a play-by-play account of their life story. Unrealistic and boring.

The game is also just badly made. It crashes all the time. Obsidian are basically amateurs and all their games from Poo Vegas to Alpha Protocol to Pillars of Eternity are full of bugs and glitches. A four year old afflicted with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome could make a better game.

and yeah the thing is there is no level cap and you can level the attribute rather than a perk if you want, so you can max every stat. means that you end up just targeting things that are important to you on the perk chart and hitting those first, and eventually you can just have everything.

ps4 is very limited with mods, xb1 is fairly limited, but being on console at least you can disregard performance/visual tweaks and just deal with whatever you're given

I'd suggest getting the high resolution patch for those games. The biggest problem I had with them playing for the first time 10 years ago was that the resolution was really small, so because of the raster sprite graphics, your field of vision was ridiculously small. The games aren't exactly difficult, but if you can't see farther than 10 meters around you it's infuriating to navigate or find anything.

I'm pretty sure Fallout 1 says that the sledge was designed by the BoS after the war. If the wiki says otherwise, it's probably because of Bethesda not doing their research for their installments ie. accidental overwriting of established lore.

Raiders, by definition, are people who raid others for stuff becuase they find it easier to take things from others, then do the work themselves.

The crux of my idea though was that they never get into gen3 synth creation. That's where they really go wrong in the brotherhood's eyes and what really starts the entire synth-paranoia among the people of the commonwealth.

The way I see it, the Institute should have had a long-term plan to return to the surface. To me, that would mean the roving bands of constructor synths that are systematically going from structure to structure, salvaging and rebuilding. All synths are programmed to be pacifist, accept against wasteland mutations which they will only kill if they endanger a human or themselves. And then the Institute just waits until all the violent psychos of the commonwealth either kill each other off.

You could even have people distrust the institute still, because no one gives shit out for free, right? They must have an ulterior motive.

So awhile ago, back when the game first came out I downloaded "Tumbajamba's Combat Power Armor" via NMM. Well Since then I had uninstalled the game and switched from my local disc C to G. Well I redownloaded F4 and cleared all my old mods. Yet, "Tumbajamba's Combat Power Armor" is still active on ALL power armors. Does anyone know a way to fix this? I'm still kinda new to modding.

If you're a stealth character you might be good buddies with some faction while also sneaking into their headquarters to steal shit and spy on them. Skyrim handles mounts a bit differently. They have bone nodes for making mounts, which I don't think FO4 has.

However, power armor is technically "moving furniture" so one day someone might be able to jury rig horse mounts based from that. Main issue is animations, though. Like getting on / off, mounted combat, etc.

For something like that, I wouldn't really know where to start.

Commonwealth Warfare, both Gun Sounds and Explosions are nice.

I don't think much effort has been put into gun textures yet, maybe I just haven't really looked. Millenia made some for the DB shotgun and combat rifle/shotgun, and I think there's some pipe weapon retextures out there, but that's as far as I remember.

And I don't think there's been any work on energy weapons yet.

I know there are some mods that use 4's models and jury rig them into NV's, but apparently they're still worn armor and look very wonky since they keep the same size as normal PA.

But it has been. I don't remember the name of the link, but its on the archive somewhere. Someone posted it maybe a week or two ago.

Also FO4 power armor probably can't be ported to NV as it is in FO4. Not without massive amounts of work and jury rigging. Maybe skeleton editing. And animations. I doubt anyone's going to do that for NV.

Had they mixed this with the base game system + integrated settlements into the factions, this system wouldn't feel like a waste of development time.

Just imagine if they had placed SimSettlements-like plots on every settlement where you can just pay caps and/or add some resources and the settlement automatically upgrades with random buildings/clutter.
You can still manually edit items with the current system, maybe choose the type of stores or something, but now you have the option of not building settlements.
A lot more people would enjoy the system if this were the case. Then you just need to integrate it with the faction system and you're golden.

Fallout 4.

I installed a few mods a long-ass time ago, then upgraded NMM a couple times, and now when I try to install new mods, they don't take even after I click the green check to install/enable.

To be honest that's one of FO4's strongest points in my eyes. There's just so much to do, and the map is compact enough that moving around doesn't get tedious. 'Safe' roads mean roads where there's nothing interesting to do, which is the antithesis of what I want out of a sandbox rpg. If you'd rather spend half an hour inhaling your own farts humping it across an empty desert in a straight line for twenty minutes every time you want to do something new for the miniscule extra legitimacy it adds to the world then more power to you but I can't abide it. Never mind that you're exclusively talking about high-density urban areas, which cover perhaps 1/3 of the map.

FO4's main problem is that the main plot is moronic to the point of inducing physical pain. Everything else was great.

Normally I would be against the minigames but since Fallout 4 is no longer a role playing game, it makes sense to make the player do things instead of letting the character's skills determine success. I have almost 600 hours in New Vegas and the only mod I've ever had is one where lockpicking and hacking is automated if your character has the skill to do it. In a role playing game it's the character's job to do the work and either succeed or fail. The player only decides what the character has to attempt to do.

no, New Vegas was contracted to Obsidian to make between FO3 and Skyrim (whilst Beth were busy with said TES), it's a direct sequel to the happenings of Fallout and Fallout 2 and is set in an adjacent region to those games as opposed to Fallout 3 which kickstarted the East Coast plots

1/2/NV and 3/4 have quite different takes on the tone of the series, but seeing as though you have no autismal investment in the games and their lore, you won't be getting uppity about that stuff in 3/4 and ought to have a great time playing 'em

if you fall in love with the setting, definitely go and play the (superior) West Coast set games thereafter

Fallout: Tactics, Fallout: Shelter and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel are the only spin-off titles, with only the most former being semi-canon and the other two are just there own random things unaffiliated with the series proper as a whole

First, you download the Invalidation Mod

I don't think you understood the point at all. It isn't about interactivity as a whole. It's about prioritizing character skill over player skill. That's all your opposition in a game ever has. It would only be fair for the same thing to be true for players. For example, an enemy can only miss you based on skills and dicerolls that determine the success of the attack, whereas the player can miss by pointing the mouse in the wrong direction. The character didn't miss due to lack of skill or unfortunate dice, but because of the player's lack of mouse coordination. That's not role playing. That's outside interference with role-playing.

What is roleplaying is for example dying by not being able to escape a self-destruct because you're playing a low agility cripple. The player can't affect the mechanics that make him too slow. The player can however affect his choices. He can choose to take a different route or make some other compromise to let his character escape in time despite his disability.

Pop-ups may be outdated, but an alternative would be an animation of the character succeeding or failing at a skill execution, instead of some time-wasting minigame. Well, at least Fallout doesn't entirely subvert the character's skill, unlike Skyrim whose minigame lets a lv1. novice successfully pick a lv100 master lock.

Fo4 doesn't go far enough in either direction and that's why nobody really likes it (except fanboys).

On one hand, it doesn't have any sort of "protected" areas, at least not ones with permanent settlements. This is a major problem because the handful of settlements there (Diamond City, Vault 81, Goodneighbor) aren't big enough to be interesting. Also even though both the Gunners and Triggermen exist, they don't have any sort of infrastructure (ie a toll road), which is strange because the Gunners control the South Boston checkpoint. All the bridges are free to pass over, even though all of them are natural places for raiders to extract a toll.

On the other hand, it doesn't go far enough with the lack of protection. In seriousness, the entire map should be irradiated like the Glowing Sea, which makes careless movement outside lethal. But this couldn't be done because of the settlement system.

In a Fallout game the player should have no incentive to jump on top of a rock to avoid attacks. The fault is in VATS, a poorly implemented compromise between FPS and AP-based combat. Players are forced to back up while firing, because enemies are not prevented from advancing while firing. In actual AP-based combat, movement would take AP just like attacking does. Characters with high agility and fast attacks could be backing up and attacking on the same turn, but pretty much no one else.

When you don't use VATS, you don't spend AP. But it also almost completely eliminates skill- and luck based probabilities. It becomes a different game, with hits under the player's direct control. The AI has no such problem. They are always attacking with skill- and luck based rolls. But they aren't using AP either. They're moving while shooting. That's literally cheating. Players find themselves jumping on top of elevated geometry to even the odds. To regenerate the AP they need for combat. -The AP that their enemies are not using while engaging on the same terms of attack. It's bug exploitation to counteract bad design.

The text logs themselves are really lazily written, especially the spock reference. It just wasn't funny or cute, just gross for the sake of gross.

Fo3 did horror a lot better, see Vault 87 and Vault 108. Both of them didn't dump worldbuilding through text logs, they just let contextual storytelling do it for them. It worked a lot better because it let the player assume things and create a better sense of dread.

Yeah I've got some kind of pip boy retex, not on my gaming rig right now so I can't actually check. Just installed it many months ago when the game was new and never bothered looking for different ones, but there are some nice ones out there now.

Actually pleasantly surprised at how much I like this game's Pip-Boy, in NV I used the Familiar Friend to take it off my arm and thought I'd quickly want a similar mod for 4 but this pipboy is actually really working for me.

I have a mod that makes it one.

Is there a way to make those mods work everywhere instead of just the base game settlements? I have a mod that extends the buildable area of Red Rocket and I can only scrap everything out to a certain radius before stuff isn't able to be scrapped anymore also, so it must be a problem with only affecting the preplaced settlements.

Its becuase The Institue wasn't made until like 30 years after the war.

The first 30 or so years was just people hiding and squatting in CiT's basement, slowly diggin shit out.

And since CiT wasn't radiation proof, they all got exposed, and mutated, to a small degree by radiation.
