Yes and no.

Yes in the sense that there's no reason he would've turned straight or bi or whatever.

No in the sense that he probably doesn't really have a sexual part of his mind anymore. He was only a kid when the transformation first happened, and now he's been without a normal body/without testicles for thousands and thousands of years.

Chances are after first transforming he was sad that he'd never be able to bone anybody (no pun intended), but at this point, after this long... he probably hasn't even thought about it in 5,000 years.

If there was still a sexual part of him 9S would've definitely had an effect on it, anyway.

Over the past week I've visited plenty of places on the net that have been analyzing themes and interpreting the story in various ways. I completely understand multiple parts of this experience are open to interpretation via many points of view, but some people just outright invent events in the game that simply weren't there.

This general has been a lot more logical and insightful than any blog or publication I've read so far.

The worst one has probably been Kotku. Yeah, I know reading that spludge in the first place is a bad idea, but a gaming experience like Automata comes very rarely nowadays and I was curious what everybody had to say about it.

This fag of a Kotku author makes the argument that Pascal was "the most human" character in Automata because he was kind, understanding and seeking prosperity via cooperation and friendship. I find the fact that he dismissed all the negative human behaviors outright that other character exhibit. Like violence, betrayal, warmongering and other acts of depravity aren't inherent human nature.

Whats the point in preserving humanities data if there are no humans left? For what purpose? In Soma happens something similar but at least there are some "functioning humans" with consciousness left.
>>
>>172433487
Historical data I suppose.
>>
>>172433370
It doesn't surprise me that a neo-liberal regressive doesn't want to admit that the "negative" aspects of humanity are part of the human experience. They probably think hunter-gatherer societies are these pure Eden-esque utopias where everyone lives in harmony with each other and nature.

>>
>>172433906
Never noticed anything wrong with it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>172433890
Except the SOMA protagonist is a fucking dummy. He was surprised when his consciousness remained instead of getting copied over to the ship at the end of the game even though he experienced his consciousness getting copied already once before. I'd probably appreciate that game more if not for that and some of the horror aspects being rather weak.

someone explain to me why there were so many little brother robots with buckets on their heads
>>
>>172430720
I don't know
>>
>>172434834
That's a callback to the beginning of route B where 9S observes a machine trying to give life to another robot by pouring buckets of oil over him.

I imagine there were so many of them at the encounter inside the reclamation facility because the machine network copied this kind of behavior over several times.
>>
>>172434285
>It's NieR Automata but every time something bad happens the game speeds up.
>>
>>172434564
The androids in automata talk, feel, etc. They're essentially humans. They could easily just become the new humans and try and live normal lives.

But that's impossible because they can't see themselves as the successors to humanity, because they're programmed to see humanity as literal gods. Which seems to be the only programming that actually effects how they think and feel.

The programming doesn't stop them from doubting authority, it doesn't stop them from figuring out when they've been lied to,it doesn't force them to love their jobs or even stop them from deserting.

But they all think humans are the shit, even 9S does when he finds out it was all a lie
>>
>>172433906
It had a grab attack?

I sort of wonder if Commander knew about all the E model deployments and S9 being farmed by 2b.

Commander was the one that told 2B she would be using the name 2B for this mission instead of 2E. After the desert boss as A2 in hacking space you hear a woman say "Normally you'd be called ... but... calling you 2B for the time". Pod 042 says it's a fragment of 2B's memories and is an order received from the YoRHa commander.

Doesn't mean you can't have a story goin on too. It's not like Route B having story changes is a bad thing

now get the fuck out of here before you get spoiled. Here's a good rule of thumb going forward: if something like that happens that confuses you, or doesn't make sense, don't ask about it because you haven't beaten the game. It'll probably be explained by the time you beat the game.

see you after ending E matey

Video link: https://youtu.be/2l32tAKaPgo?t=17m24s

Commander basically says observe 9S and kill him if necessary. Kind of amusing that 9S never gets the opportunity to tell 2B about what he found on the server and about humans. If he did should would have needed to kill him again in the game.
>>
>>172430889
Its not as bad as it sounds just don't be an idiot and try to move your hips at any point outside of the perfectly flat position though i'd imagine androids would have better control over their own movements.

Because she deserted so they weren't about to let her get re-genned. Also they talk about storing their memories on their swords, but that's not a full back-up like a black box. If an android gets destroyed you can't bring them back to life using what's stored on their sword. It's more like a diary than a backup

Can we talk WW2 references? There seem to be a lot in Nier: Automata.
>Pearl Harbor descent is in 11942 (1942)
>9S first awakes in 11942 (1942)
>Battle of Guadalcanal in 11942 (1942)
>Normandy Descent Mission in 11944 (1944)
>The mission in Route C to retake the city is called "Berlin 046"
>YoRHa heavy armour look like Wehrmacht helmets
>Nietzsche was popular with the Nazis
>The machines have a ton of communist references to them, like the Goliaths being called Marx and Engels
And so on...

There's plenty of WW2 stuff in the game, I'd love to know what else there is and what people think of it.

The Marx and Engels names mainly go along with the theme of philosophers that contributed to existentialism and socialism. In fact, all the major machine characters are named after them.

If you're a bit more familiar with the writings of these particular people you can make connections to how it ties together to certain events of both the main quest and subquests.

Blood is simply a method of delivering nutrients/oxygen and such to various parts of the body, so the androids may also need a similar delivery system. Don't know enough about how they work to be sure though

>Are they organic?
They're obviously made to imitate humans. Whether that means they have muscle fibers and other "organic" components is unknown, but then you'd have to decide whether or not that makes "alive," even though they were assembled rather than born

Could just be that YoRHa's lubricant fluids are red, they very evidently run off of electricity, not chemical energy of any sort. My guess would be that it just saturates their joints, and muscle fibers to keep them from wearing out, and could also be circulated (as blood is) to help dump heat away from vital systems. Highly unlikely that it's actual blood.
>>
>>172443305
The point was something about them being CHILDREN'S souls is a key component for it even working. It implies adult souls just don't work and you get a room of corpses and bloody equally useless books.

I mean, I don't really see any co-opting. She posted an interview with very little commentary.

Emil's homosexuality is progressive, like it or not, especially for a Japanese game made in 2010.

It's progressive in the right way, because he's just a person who happens to be gay, instead of bioware-style in your face nonsense. There wasn't any special meaning to Emil being gay, but it is normalizing homosexuality, which given the context can be seen as progressive.

Just not the type of obnoxious SJW shit that the word "progressive" immediately makes one think of
>>
>>172444351
Hell, the only reason we know he's gay is because of an excerpt from his diary in Grimoire Nier, right? If someone's whole character is defined by their sexuality, then that's a pretty damn shallow character.
>>
>>172444671
Oh. Well without bodies to latch onto the souls go feral and die.
No body no soul no soul no body. No shadowlord no gestalts.

You could store the souls on servers but so long as shadowlord dies or replicants don't exist they're doomed.
Books only worked through some special fuckery and even then it had something like an 8% success rate and a 92% failure rate and they still required something else with a soul to make a sort of pact with.

You could fuse your soul with a dildo and unless a relatively functioning human existed to pact with you would just sit there doing jackshit including being sentient.

There is no rule that you need replicants for gestalts. Just bodies. But what I'm talking about is more the "doom" thing. Because it's not that the gestalts wouldn't all fade. It's that they'd not be allowed to. They wouldn't be allowed to do anything. They'd be swallowed up and sorted. Trapped. Locked away. Archived.

What the fuck is the problem with Hard mode?

I started a new game in hard mode and everything can one shot your ass, this is retarded.
>>
>>172448326
defense and/or health chips
heal every time you get hit, have so much money that healing items are trivially expensive

Hard mode isn't hard, it's just tedious because you have to heal every time you get hit (unless you're not running the right chips, in which case yes, it's basically very hard mode)

Had mode is actually a lot of fun if you don't start with it on. I played through in hard mode the first time.

Play the prologue on normal at least. Switch to hard even after the prologue or after you get some chips.

Hard more really requires max hp+ and defense chips. Normal mode is easily beatable even if you never use a chip. Hard mode demands you use chips and your builds are actually important.

I played hard mode (prologue normal) for my first playthrough and overall felt it was the best difficulty, some parts were frustrating but nothing was too crazy, and overall I preferred it to the boring lack of difficulty in normal mode.

However, I think there should be a difficulty in between Normal and Hard... called hard. Call Hard "very hard." And Very Hard mode should be renamed to something like "2B must die," give it a meme name to make it clear that it's a meme difficulty mode.

Dying in a single hit regardless of the attack like you do on very hard is a weird gimmick that should have a gimmicky name, don't just call it "very hard'

I'm an old platinum fan and i rekt the singer on the first try on hard.
If you're uncomfortable then actually play on normal unless you start feeling like it's getting too easy towards the end of the game.
>>
>>172448860
What lvl are you just out of curiosity? I beat the singer bitch on Hard first time through as well, I was either level 11 or 12. But yeah, it was really rough. But keep plugging away at it; you're probably getting closer than you think. It's one of those bosses where getting the health down a certain amount triggers different phases/scenes that progress the fight. Her health bar won't be going down that slowly the whole time.

>>172448989
Or just play normal if you're not having fun. I never grinded on hard mode, or at least I don't feel like I did. Finished route A at level 30.

>>172449026
I'm sorreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

but yeah it's dumb. imo the game should ask you to choose your difficulty mode after beating the prologue, not before
>>
>>172449220
I really liked the feeling of power progression that hard mode gives you; near the end of the game things were getting sort of easy even on hard but I didn't mind it, it felt really good, like I'd earned it.

But yeah, once I beat the game and before I sacrificed my save, I was bummed that I couldn't lower my own level somehow. I mean I can just spawn level 80 stubbies in the debug room I guess but it's not the same

Agree completely. Platinum games normally HAVE 5 difficulty levels, with a regular difficulty range between the bottom four and then the top difficulty being their "special properties" mastery difficulty. Why the fuck they didn't do that here I have no idea.

The mastery difficulty of this game is also pretty fucking unfun in general compared to something like infinite climax mode in Bayonetta which actually changed the properties of the game in an interesting way. The mastery difficulty in this game is just "lol shmups guys am I rite"

But why'd she sneak into the castle alongside 9S and 2B (the machines were doing stuff like holding planning meetings in other rooms so she was clearly not tearing her way through the place before them) only to kill that one useless machine in particular? Feels so random and arbitrary.

Much like A2 as a character in general. Feels like they just threw in a third character last minute for the hell of it.

Was Ernst one of the hilariously sad figures in the game? He made a kingdom and was loved by his subjects and he gave everything to them to the point where it took his own life. Then they backed up his data to another body that couldn't even speak or move and he spent over a hundred years looking and listening to how dumb his former subjects are, until they all get massacred for nothing and he dies without being able to defend himself.
>>
>>172450341
The only other moment that made me go "wut" like that one was the children committing suicide. I saw it coming a mile away when the game suddenly makes you control Pascal and it just felt like a gratuitous cheap tragedy moment. A bit much, even in the context of the rest of the game.

It's a fraction of his data. It's more likely he had the awareness of a kid, which doesn't make the whole thing that much better, but it's definitely not really Ernst any more.

>>
>>172450492
The game giving the player control of Pascal as he ran back to check on the children made what happened next hilariously predictable.

>>
>>172450709
>>172450492
I'm not sure it was supposed to be a big twist. In fact, giving you control over Pascal is what made me think Taro wanted us to see it coming.

Sometimes, it's more about what you fear might happen coming to pass. Seeing an ambulance outside your home (let's assume you don't live alone) might make the outcome obvious, but that doesn't make you feel any less shit when you find out something happened to your sibling/partner/parent.

I knew exactly what was going to happen but it still made me feel sad, Pascal's ensuing breakdown and the choice making it so much worse.
>>
>>172450675

I think you missed the point of the example.

Unpredictability is not necessary to make an event feel impactful. Things we already expect coming true can pack just as much of a punch, comedic or tragic. Relying too much on twists can make things feel gimmicky.

Unless you truly measure a writer's cleverness by how many twists he manages to shoehorn into his work, in which case to each their own.
>>
>>172450013
>>172449939
This was the only part of the story that really bothered me, the extreme inconsistency in A2's character. She's slaughtering all machines without mercy, including one that even looks like a fucking baby, but then goes to Pascal's village and after like 10 minutes she's doing quests for them and all "maybe machines aren't so bad."

What bitch? How long have you been on earth at this point? There's no WAY this is the first indication you've seen that maybe they aren't all that bad. Big inconsistency and one of the main reasons that A2 is the weakest character, despite all the fapping over her

Theres some material floating around that says actual successful merges had happened elsewhere in the world but for some reason they went crazy despite shadowlord still being a thing and then shadowlord disappeared so every attempt afterwards failed until it all just petered out.

1. Replicants gained free will. A gestalt could still essentially inhabit a replicant with its own will, but in most cases it would result in both people going insane. So you've got gestalts who can't re-inhabit their bodies.

2. Gestalts who can't re-inhabit their bodies eventually relapse and go insane, and start killing replicants.

3. Replicants whose gestalts have relapsed or died start developing the black scrawl, which will eventually kill them. Even if their gestalt is still alive and sane, they could easily get killed by a relapsed shade any day of the week.

So a lot of reasons

Simply plopping the Gestalts into a bunch of empty shells had turned into a massive civil war with everyone deteriorating and fading away before the end of it.

Humanity might have had a chance if they could have used the Grimoires to force the two sides to fuse, but the fact that the Replicant half of the fusion is apparently still conscious after being taken over would probably have had some pretty rough repercussions. Not sure where things would have gone from there.

A question /ndg/. I have a feeling I'm nearing the end of Route A (9S is missing) and I would like to know if there is a point in the game where I will be locked out from doing side quests.

I still have a couple to do like the Half Wit Inventor, Father Servo and the couple but I don't have enough money for the inventor and I'm too low level for Father Servo.

Will I be locked out of those quests if I continue the story?

I like that interpretation too, actually. There was some anon a few threads ago arguing that 2B was literally like, inside the sword, and that sword memories were the same sort of backup as black boxes. That was his explanation for how the pods were able to save 2B in the end "they just used the backup data from her sword!"

which is fucking retarded, imo anyway, because in that case instead of 9S going "oh no oh fuck 2B is dead everything is meaningless I MUST KILL A2" he would've been like "oh, damn, that's annoying, now 2B is a sword! Gotta kill A2, get the sword back, and use it to bring 2B back to life! sheesh! at least the weather's nice today!"

It feels that way because of the degree to which it forces you to commit to attacks. I personally really enjoy it, but I get why you feel the way you do.

It's hard to get into coming out of platinum games which are all about cancelling into whatever because you can't cancel shit in dark souls

Personally I hope taro sticks with Plat going forward. Obviously there are improvements they could make, but I think it's a really good team. Platinum and Taro both love incorporating weird minigames and sequence breaks into their games, and they both really like dynamic music, and I think that alone makes them a great combo; it really shows in automata

Obviously that's assuming he ever makes another game and doesn't just crumble under the pressure of Automata's critical reception and never work again

For the record, I'd probably still play a DoD/Nier if it was done by From, just to get some more Taro-tier writing, I just wouldn't enjoy the gameplay.

>Personally I hope taro sticks with Plat going forward.
I'd love that, but at the same time I'd love to see what Taro's own studio would come up with, if he even has the manpower to do a large-scale game. I am just not sure if Platinum's up for it, Platinum seems to not to do sequels. Only one I can think of is Bayonetta 2 and Nintendo egged them on with that one.

I'd recommend Nier if you loved the world and lore of Automata. It really helps with the experience.

HOWEVER, THAT SAID, this situation is totally different. Don't focus on how he didn't like the game and might be lying about it, focus on how he STOPPED AT ENDING A. The issue isn't that he may or may not have shit on a game to get attention.

The issue is that he wrote a review of a game he beat AT MOST one-third of, and it counts towards the metascore just as much as review written by folks who actually beat it. now that's fucked up.

and developed by platinum, and changed a lot.

DOD3's combat is not good. It's just better than drakengard 2 and 3. The level design is horrendous, just hallways, and there's like one enemy type. The story is fun overall but definitely tryhard in a few places, and baby Mikhail was a MISTAKE. definitely his weakest story other than drak2, which I don't really think even counts

I'd replay DOD3 if it was a remake, but I wouldn't replay DOD3 if it was the same game with just visual/framerate updates

Personally I don't care why someone gives N:A 6.5/10. Any reason is a wrong reason.

It's like the famous IGN 3/10 review for God Hand. It doesn't matter what the reviewer was thinking or how sincere he was, he should be fired for doing that.
>>
>>172459751
Maybe Yoko Taro will follow through with the hint that he'd do a remake of Drakengard 1 and 3. And possibly Nier, I can't remember if that was included or not
>>
>>172459337
I know the gameplay is pretty shallow, but even then, it's still definitely more fun than many mecha games I've played, and I have played quite a few, but more mechanics do not always translate into better gameplay. That's why I'm saying I would like them to focus more on that, so they can develop it some more.

And no, I have played many old shmups, but I'm not an active fan of the genre, and I never implied such thing. I was talking about mecha games.

I really don't think that's true at all. In fact, this difficulty system isn't platinum at all. Normal Platinum difficulty is
Normal (easy)
Hard (normal)
Very Hard (hard)
Goofy name mode (very hard)

And in general the difficulty is much more consistent than in nier automata, which has the following difficulty settings
Easy (kys)
Normal (easy)
Hard (very hard + obnoxious ohkos)
Very hard (fucking memes)

I wish N:A had a difficulty curve like most platinum games, but it really really doesn't.

That's dumb as hell. N:A only requires 2 playthroughs to get all 5 endings, the 2nd has many changes, and after completing the second you get ~10 hours of totally new content.

But if you're gonna play it ever get the FUYUYUYUCK outta here because this is primarily a post-game discussion general wit no spoiler tags. come back after you get ending E. enjoy

Don't know where you heard that but it's wrong. I've played every game platinum's ever made except for the shovelware and the difficulty levels tend to be really well-balanced and consistent.

However, that is a problem that Nier:Automata has in spades. The other main problem being how the healing works, i.e. whenever you want on a pause menu

It's Maso, and the logic virus is obviously linked to the Watchers.
The game goes out of its way to tell that to you.
Meat box relates to replicants, soul box relates to gestalts and god box to the watchers.
But like was the case with the original it mostly points in that direction and we have to wait until supplementary material to fill the gaps in the story.

does 2B know about humanitiy's fate?.
That's kind of ambiguous. Some people think she does, because her memories still carry over every time 9S gets too close to the truth, but others theorize that she just received orders from the commander on when to kill him, and never found out the reason why.

>than who runs the android movement in general?
Some higher-up androids probably left over from the Hameline Organization. We never see them though, so their exact status is unknown. Maybe they're just a small council hiding out on the moon.

>why did the pacifist machines start attacking each other?
Looked like logic virus. Either N2 was tired of Pascal helping out the androids, or they were just running some experiments of their own on the situation.

It should be noted that you can see similar effects as early as Route A in Simone's basement during the Amusement Park ticket quest with the "zombified" machines.

You later then see the whole Amusement Park has been taken over by the zombie virus in Route C.

Although those machines don't attack you which makes me wonder if it's a different kind of strain or an effect of early infection.

The whole change to the Amusement Park was weird. I can understand it was a change in atmosphere towards the end of the game to reinforce to hopeless feeling of how everything has gone to fuck, but I'd still like to know just what exactly was going on. As has been said, you see zombified machines after Simone is gone and it clearly spread somehow, but the machines in the park in Route C were very passive just as before.

It can be theorised that maybe Simone was keeping the virus and infected machines in the basement in check to stop them from spreading.

Well, some of the info on them is from Drakengard 2, so I don't know what exactly is considered canon, but I think the general implication is that they're tools/playthings of the Gods/Watchers, sewn in order to give birth to the world's destruction.

And the seals are the only thing that keep the balance of the world in check and suppress the Gods' destructive influence in the world.

Now imagine that you simply making that for funsies imbued it with cosmic power and you dropping it on the ground when you got called in for dinner meant it fell into another dimension as prophesied by something you consider a pest.

It wasn't really an "according to keikaku" moment just one many many things that LOOK like puzzle pieces but really aren't all falling in a manner that presents a picture.
>>
>>172463330
I personally don't think the zombified machines in Route B held any special meaning. Taro says in multiple interviews he enjoys when his games have meaningless stuff in them that makes people squint and question why it's in there. It might be a joke on how games turn machines into zombies, since the game dev quest giver is there. It might be where machines lock up "broken" machines as a form of quarantine, like you said.

During Route C it's just the same outbreak that 2B sees in the Resistance Camp during Route A. Androids and machines suffer similarly from the logic virus. The amusement park goes to shit, Pascal's village goes to shit. It's likely not all machine lifeforms who attack the Resistance camp in Route A weren't neutral, either.

Hard to say. Maybe it wouldn't have hurt to have a dragon around who didn't particularly care for the watchers. Not to mention all those theories about Caim becoming Red Eye after being shot down.

Humanity apparently got all their new tech/magic from Angelus's corpse though. So Project Gestalt pretty much revolves around that.

It's impossible to know. Also the world was fucked as soon as the Queen entered it, either they don't touch her and she destroys everything, or they kill her and WCS for everyone. Caim and Angelus being alive wouldn't have changed much, maybe they could have made some vaccine from Caim's tissues though, if he didn't get blown up that is.

FTFY.
They could have single handedly fucked up the Legion before it left quarantine preventing the nuke that caused its global spread, been a constant source of "good" magic, and helped clean up QB's maso assuming we could convince them to do so and any ragtagish level milita could put them down otherwise because apparently they aren't immune to munitions so barring their want to "adventure" things up after the fact the actual damage would have been minimal. The New Crusade could even have given them a minorly new purpose and direction assuming shit got that fair.

Honestly, if we REALLY wanted them "under control" we literally just point them in the direction of the middle east, pull out shit out, and let him be the new means of control over there.

I was just thinking, their economic situation must not have been too good lately. Microsoft not paying/delaying scalebound payments is probably the one thing that actually hurt them.

It's not going to matter to them that their games don't sell because they aren't really releasing their/financing their own products, but rather work on IP for other companies. Other companies lose money, not them.

Angelic is used in the original Nier when using sealed verses too.

It's a result of maso.

All androids use maso.

As for the true purpose of the resource units, I'm not fully sure outside of how they were recycling machines. N2 thanks you for trashing a load and gives you chests based upon the number you destroyed in the entire game.

N2 IS the machine network. It's been in control the whole time, learning and evolving as it absorbs information and basically pulling the machines strings, including Adam and Eve, the whole time.

N2 has been around since before A2's Pearl Harbor mission. They're avatars that serve as an embodiment of the network, so it's hard to say if they were around since the beginning, or if they just formed as the machine network grew more and more advanced.

>I wasn't impressed with what I saw

Nobody was. That was probably the reason. Microsoft most likely couldn't stop from getting his nose on the design, so Kamiya's team and their vision mixed up with the classic corporative design by committee aimed at dudebros was a terrible idea no matter how you look at it.

I had hope though, I believed Kamiya could still pull it off, but I wasn't surprised at all when it was cancelled.

>>172471367
That's mostly true, but you don't generally keep a company afloat with just that. The money you get paid is used to cover the actual development costs and little more, it's the sales the ones that usually give profits to guarantee economic stability in the near future even if there are no current contracts. That's why many companies fire a lot of their staff after releasing a game, they just don't have enough money to pay all of that people while there are no on-going projects.

They do seem to have a history of making bad deals, Nintendo, Activision, Microsoft. Even the SEGA deal didn't turn out all that bad for them, but SEGA couldn't give a shit after that. Man, it's really tough going indie.

I never said suffer.
I said Least Wrong.
Jean-Paul plays the field and the players evenly while remaining separate.
Jackass instantly reverts to childish selfish behavior when she finds out she's being played by life in general and that instantly places her at the very least in Leastish Wrong before deciding to tear it all down going full Wrong.
Anemone and resistance in general keep fighting for a lie they may or may not know i'm not sure where we stood on that but that still puts them in Leastish Wrong and morally wrong for simply refusing free thought without assistance.
They're no villians but they're aren't the best.
>>
>>172472464
I don't believe Anemone or the resistance knows the truth. Maybe she suspects at the most, but she isn't privy to any sort of information.

What she would care most for is the safety of her comrades. That is her cause.

That's what I don't get. Why would you hire Kamiya, who is know for being strong-headed about game design, and is also know for well, making things are are definitely very Japanese-y? You aren't going to market a game by him to dudebros no matter what. Dudebros like brand recognition, and a new IP by a very niche developer doesn't sound like a good thing if you're trying to court that demographic.

Don't look for any logic in Microsoft's actions, they do that every few years or so. They've been cluelessly stumbling in the industry for almost a decade now.

It's still weird though, considering how the game was pretty much finished, was it really that much of a sacrifice to just release it, even if unpolished (it's not like it would be a new thing) and try to at least cover some of the costs, instead of just cancelling it, guaranteeing it would be a net loss.

My point is he's experienced this shit before and came out the other side with applicable life lessons and goals.
We KNOW he's better than this but this time around he caves instead of doing what he did last time and learning from his mistakes. Instead of dedicating to himself to revenge or making a better village or ANYTHING he actively begs someone ELSE to end him and only after that person refuses does he take actions into his own hands out of desperation.
Its a cowards act no matter which way you view it and its one of my sticking points with his character as a whole.

Its the equivalent of a general being hardened through battles as he rose through the ranks than the first failure he has as a strategist and he loses it?

I don't think that's really fair. Pascal was a soldier mindlessly following orders for a long time, but this is the first time he lost everyone he had truly got to know, and everything that he had tried to build. And it's because he tried to teach something new to those he cared about.

I could agree with saying that dying or erasing his memories isn't the right choice to make in the end, but watching everyone he knew and loved kill themselves because he wanted them to learn something new isn't just some little mistake that everyone should be expected to immediately shrug off and use to grow as a person.

You can't take that mantle off and lie down and give up when it doesn't work. That invalidates everything you did and in this case the lives and existence of the villagers he was the leader of just because the situation turned sour. Its untenable as a viewpoint and an active insult to the dead and all he can think about is running away from it all like a coward.

I'm nowhere near a supporter of their hateful cause, but while I wouldn't say it's justified, I can understand their reaction to a certain degree because of how much they've suffered because of the US.
