Not any one thing, or even any particular genre. My collection is somewhere in the neighborhood of 450GB, and there's a good chunk of it I haven't listened to yet.

The explanation behind the high number of farmers and rangers is that I'm building a large above ground tower fort. Most of them do construction work, hence the lack of practical skills.

DF has always been both brutal and whimsical with a touch of surrealism, a bit like some interpretations of the first D&D editions concluding that the setting is actually a weird post-apocalyptic world.

Noob here. I got my first legendary miner a while back, but he ended up dying in a small goblin skirmish (around ~10 goblins got to an area where there was being work done, military was subpar because i only have copper equipment and suffice to say there were casualties). Anyways, I can't view him anymore, so is there any way I can do some custom engraving to remember him by? Can I dedicate stuff to my first legendary miner?

On another note, I only have thus far found copper, gold, and gypsum. This is proving increasingly dangerous - valuable gold is an attraction for trouble. Copper equipment means basically for every goblin killed, a dwarf dies. I've tried to make them train more to make up for this, but I'm worried I'm going to get overrun. How can I counteract this?

traps. If your feeling especially cheesy, cage traps always captures any enemy as long as they don't have trap avoid, which gobbos don't have. If thats too easy you can make a few bolder/weapon traps to try and thin the horde before they reach your military.

A lot of my military are becoming wrestlers, despite the fact that I've equipped them with spears and warhammers.

They can only get better, organisation skill plays a big part in how quickly they do demonstrations or sparing. Though if they have these other skills they'll also do a demonstration for it.
It really doesn't matter to much they're bound to pick up some of these other skills through combat anyway just as long as theirs no cross weapon training you'll be right.

In all honestly, there's really not THAT much, relatively, needs to be coded in df. Toady doens't need to code specific people and heroes, script wars and events. All he needed to make is personality/decision and reputation systems, for that sort of stuff. And with that you have wars, you have riots, you have warlords, you have tantrum spirals etc etc. In the future you'll have armageddons, conspiracy bullshit that rules the world, energy sources of a world, all that jazz, you only need that precious magic system and basic recognition of ingame world elements by the creatures that live there. And by having these basic gears the game will be able to manifest itself and create tons of content for you. And that's Toady's main goal as we know. Also we don't really see how much shit's already happenning in the game because it's mainly unused yet, or just hidden, but he managed to do a fuckton of systems that in synergy will cause us endless fun.

I don't really care if any biases get injected in the game, I mean the game is already a collectivist utopia, but the overarching point of the game is that it all collapses eventually no matter what.

So you can't really interpret the game as being pro or against anything, because eventually some Titan or Tantrum Spiral ruins your little idealistic kingdom and thats what makes the game special. Ultimately you can sandbox in reaction to whatever the values or facts of the situation are: you can be full xenophobic and kill foreign taverners and caravans, or include them in your fort, you can throw homosexual dwarfs in volcanos or be tolerant of procedurally generated characters.

I find in media its best to have a bleak world sprinkled strategically with happy moments. Theres an interplay where both bad and good give each-other meaning. The cool thing about DF is you are established in a peaceful fort where people like to Socialize! and then it all gets interrupted. I was playing with an idea of making a Prison Fortress. Fuck architect. Basically have a skeleton crew that can maintain the fortress, and then assume that all the migrant waves after the first dorf caravan are prisoners serving a sentence and treat them as such. Maybe use the time the Dwarven caravan Augusts as a time to see if I need new employees to refresh military ranks and accept applicants. I don't know about children though...

At the moment I am overcoming the initial difficulty of the game and I am starting to realize the game is in fact a sandbox, so yeah its all about crazy ideas.

Another idea is to make your fortress centered around a temple, dedicated to hecatombs. However you would wish to do it, butcher animals on a high place and forbid the remains, throw offerings into some sort of pit, capture dangerous beasts and throw offerings to please the beasts.

Make a gladiatorial arena. I had an idea of tying a barracks and tavern together, namely where people spar is the central lower level, and the upper balconies of the arena are where people may wish to feast and watch the warriors in training.

As much as for this i'm waiting for the expanded building generation. He had some interesting designs in very early versions but replaced them with placeholders. Finally all the villages and castles start to make sense with. Also secret doors and rooms in keep ruins! Ffuck there's so much cool shit could be done with it. One good thing it's for is endless diagnostics training, and then the usefulness for that is debatable too.

It crashes every month or so because Meph can't be assed to check if the game is still playable or if half the reactions aren't broken when he releases a new version, requiring extensive bugfixes and fucking around to figure out what you can safely do, otherwise you'll abandon your fort to random crashes and save corruption long before your first siege. Even seasonal saves with autobackups aren't enough to fight against entropy.
When it does work, it's still a patchwork of largely incompatible mods hastily thrown together, with no clear vision behind all the bloat. Additions can range from "stupid and useless trap options" to "horribly broken cheat options" to "Dwarves Must Die difficulty mode" and you'll need to learn them the hard way because there's no documentation (can't rely on wiki, the manual is hopelessly out of date and extremely unhelpful either way, and good luck tracking down shit in the raws.)

In short it's just like Dwarf Fortress, cranked up to 11.

If you use the latest unofficial bugfix version + your own tweaks and turn almost every mod feature off, it's a nice package with all the utilities preinstalled so you can play vanilla+.

You're probably talking about engravings displaying the contents of the engraving, instead of looking like walls/floors - which has absolutely nothing to do with the tileset you use, but a setting in the init files (search for ENGRAVING). It also can be toggled in game with a key combination. I think it's under [d]esignations.

Probably not the word you were looking for. The seed isn't the element that does the work in procedural generation. The same seeds used now will be used in the next version as well, its the fort generation algorithms that will have been changed.

So hard to find a mod that doesn't throw in 10 really weird ideas that break the game or kill the flavor. Taffer's compilation mod ( http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=161832.0 ) is filled with great ideas, but then it has other shit that bugs me to no end like renaming "upper body" to "chest" so that have to read nonsensical sentences about punching people in the chest from behind, or changing the title of "Great White Shark" to "White Shark" as a means of simplifying the text output.

Is there a single almost-vanilla mod updated for 43.05? I hate to talk shit because what these modders do is so far beyond what I could accomplish in any reasonable amount of time, but why does it always go so fucking dumb and autistic with the needless tweaks?

I don't expect a "racism slider" or something, but certainly there should be a way to make goblins more inherently awful, so they wouldn't be integrated into dwarf society.

I mean, it says in their fucking description that they are driven to cruelty by their evil nature.

I'm going to assume you are playing vanilla. If so then you can't be at war with Dwarves. It seems you have the Goblin civ highlighted, if so, then it means they are at war with you and vice versa. If the war persists then within a year or two after you start they will probably send a small 2-4 gobbo team to test out your defenses.

Yes, it can be confusing. However the W is trading places whenever you highlight one or the other to show that both sides are at war with each other. The white and slightly whiter-white is hard to differentiate sometimes in the UI. the slightly whiter-white is the civ you currently have highlighted.

Just to be clear, the cave of beginning is your home civ, not another dwarf civ out in the world. The other civ is a goblin civ who you've already encountered on your embark. That page always starts with only your own civ visible and becomes populated with others as you interact with them. It appears that the civs screen is being replaced entirely in the next version.

I think that if you slightly modified the RAWs to include the new parameters since the 34.xx days (I think there are only a few) then you should be able to get them playable with only slight difficulty.
Be warned though, as I recall they were pretty small and fragile. I once charged into a sewer full of them with nothing but an elven swordlady, and slaughtered about a hundred of them with a wooden shortsword at "Proficient" skill level by just mashing the directional keys and charging.

Your first dwarves dig in when they arrive and set up a closed system that can sustain themselves and then wall themselves off before the next migrants arrive.
Do the same with every wave of migrants.
They can only interact with eachother via throwing shit into pits which lead to other containment zones.

Pros: Tantrum spirals only affect one containment zone since none of them know anyone from other zones. Fun experiments, crossbreeding and whatnot.

Not that guy, I'm not going to try diagnosing your problem because I don't have access to your game, but I would recommend removing any clothes that aren't in the [COVER] layer. Really your best bet would be to remove their uniforms entirely to force them to reequip from scratch, but you'll keep having this problem every time a piece of clothing degrades.
As for your human guards, I suspect you're just mistaken. Your dwarves are getting fucked up at the periodic uniform checks when they try to switch out equipment. Foreign units coming from off map spawn with all their equipment already worn and never change it.

Tantrum spirals haven't been a thing for a few years now. Isolated tantrums are even pretty rare now, even when you're trying to get them. The only ones who don't have relationships with dwarves in other zones will probably be the starting 7, who only know each other. Many migrants know dwarves from other waves, and sometimes you'll have large extended families come to your fort slowly over the course of years.

It isn't hard to do. I'm not just gonna post code like I did for banananon up there but all you technically need to do is add [SITE_CONTROLLABLE] to their entity. It'll probably be pretty boring or a bit broken though if you don't add management nobles, but they're better than humans and goblins in that regard since they actually have a set of defined nobles instead of randomly genned positions that don't work in fort mode.

That's not likely at all. In the myth and magic update the fantasy slider will allow you to create worlds that don't even have dwarves, on both ends of the spectrum. He talked in a recent FotF about how human village management would be unstaisfying in fort mode for low-fantasy worlds the way things stand now, and its something that will need work or delays. That's tantamount to a confirmation that non-dwarf-fort mode is going to be a thing sooner or later.

Cooking plants destroys the seeds, but eating them raw doesn't, nor does processing them in any other way that I can think of. Farming really isn't complicated at all, just set it up and tell them to plant something (plump helmets are easy mode), and so long as the farm is big enough and set to be planted in enough seasons and you have enough farmers (you don't need many) and don't go out of your way to get rid of the seeds you'll be fine. It really should be a lot more complicated and difficult than it is, but that's another discussion.

Haven't played DF in months and considering getting back into it again but I have to know first; Are ambushes basically non existent and sieges rare as fuck still?

Ambushes are weird, nosieges is a meme. You can't embark on an island in the middle of nowher and get sieged anymore but that's about it. It's been close to a year since 43.05 came out, the nosieges was from 40.24, that's more than months.

If you really want hordes nonstop add [NATURAL_SKILL:DISCIPLINE:x] to variousu races, with x from 3~8 being a nice crunchy number, 10+ gets absurd.

You never could. Even before world activation you always had to at least have a traversable land path to your fort for sieges or foreign traders. It wasn't limited to a 30 world tile radius then, though.

That's the movement speeds, putting tags and stuff above the gait lines (like right on top literally) ensures that both castes will get the effect, probably matters more to people like me who define castes early in a creature but either way.

Yeah, it's an extreme example of the sort of "I never get sieged!" talk, it's like 'are you on an island? did you set up your fort on a glacier at the far end of the world and literally half the map from other civs?' "well, yeah, but I always used to get sieged like that" type stuff.

Wild, if you have a fire on grass and dump out sand around it it actually slows the progression down some.

It stayed in that sand firebreak for fucking ever before it finally spread beyond it and started speeding up to normal progression.

Luckily for my dwarfs I like to play NO TRADE and try to make due with what I have.
Although it took some time for life in the glacier to become good.
Had to close off the caverns because THREE web-shooting forgotten beasts have invaded.

Is the idea supposed to be they are just adventurers exploring the surrounding area,? but its not really implemented.

Makes me think it will work like an rpg, where they sell treasure, but YOU are the vendor.

I would imagine things of this nature would come when military expeditions become a thing. I would be excited to see an entire faction of mercenaries visit my tavern or a some such army. And then various things can go wrong and it turns into a conflict within the fort, or they happen to hang out when I was already getting attacked and I get free assistance.

I am still tinkering with the ideas there, tried to have it as the male dwarf geldable bit and the flags show up in gm-editor but it seems it's still a rare thing to actually have it work.

It's SLIGHTLY annoying that you can be right handed, left handed, or beardhanded because if you draw/sheathe weapons repeatedly they'll cycle around between them, but I can live with that.

I do need to see if I can keep people from wearing gloves on their beards though... dammit.

Got bored so dug into the circus. Clowns didn't want to come straight up and went up into the pump stack fighting across the caverns.

Had the military waiting for ages, some of them weren't happy dwarfs and a lot of built up stress.

Then the goblins attacked so had to deal with them and it must have really pushed some dwarfs too far. Half the dwarfs were dead before the fireballs came flying across at the entrance.

Not too sure what really might have caused it.

So did a reclaim on a fort has a dragon in it. Turns out it's pretty barren. Don't want to get overrun by crundles either.

Going to farm down in the open caverns so it should be fun.
