I finally pump water in but because a problem with the mechanics the magma is going to take a little longer. Next step is to breach the cavers and wait for the grass to grow, I hope the lag spike don't be too much.
Apart from furnish the rooms I don't really know what to do next, any suggestions?

Constructed walls drop the materials unless connection is severed in one chunk, natural stone walls (or ice walls as I used for my no-dfhack sub-magma constructions) fall as a solid block and end up sitting where they land (unless they melt) with the liquids displaced on top of them.

Dropping one through a gap which it is tall enough to fill:

[] < \
[] <-- solid block
[] < /
.. <- gap
~ < \
~ <-- magma or water

Should give:

~ <-- magma or water
~ < /
.. <-- open space
[]
[]
[]

Though I can't recall exactly if it worked as well as I hoped because I don't remember how tall I made the block/gap.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hmm. I'm not sure if magma and water follow the same rules. pic related is what I did.

You usually put a > before quoted lines after clicking the post number to link it.

>not sure magma and water follow the same rules
They do except water pressure can force water up a U-bend but can't do the same with magma.

What you did will just teleport the water under the block on top of it.

You want:
[]
[]
[] <- block
.._ < \
.._ <-- floors you want muddied+open space
.._ < /
~# < \
~# <-- water+stone cistern wall
~# < /

I'm getting a bug where my adventurer, that I coronated a Baron, left the capital (read baron of Healedvessel in picrelated) and enabled the Outpost Liaison to repeatedly declare my realm elevated. I haven't had any crashes, though I just moved over the other day.

I haven't tried many of the dfhack features though. I'm basically just using it for its manage labors feature.

I mostly use marker and then open depending on what I need
>>
>>171908608
Very impressive, mate. That feature which lets you see z levels below really helps with this fort.
I only just discovered automine ore, so I'm kind of playing around with more organic looking forts. So far the hardest thing is letting go of efficiency. Style is more satisfying.

>>

https://github.com/DFHack/dfhack/releases/tag/0.40.24-r5

The latest one on github is a beta release for 43.05. Don't want to get your versions mixed up.

Is 40.24 the latest df you've played? Some cool stuff has been added since then (probably, I can't be bothered checking)

>>171909303
Yeah it's a pretty interesting naming scheme the creator came up with for his non-square set lol.
>>
>>171909093
The problem that I have with automine is that you need to find a vein first so you need to create a corridor to it which inevitably will make it look less natural, is better to create your own "caves" and work from there
>>
>>171909740
Definitely. Mouse control is pretty important for that. Keyboard designation would make me want to kill myself.

The couple of days I've used it I've really come to like automine though. Beforehand I'd been using dfhack's digv and it always felt kind of cheaty being able to see exactly where the vein was before mining it.
>>
>>171909665
Oh damn I thought 40.24 was the latest, I've had it on my computer for a year or so and just got back into it
>>
>>171909919
Oh man, welcome back. There's been a ton of improvements since then. Newest version has 64bit support, and I think we're getting magic in the next release.
>>
>>171909919
Yeah, you're waaaaay out of date, like a couple of years.

>>171909665
It's the GemSet guy and he's had nonsquare sets the whole time, I used to swear by his old 32x48 text set before I saw his 24x36 vector set.

It's vector_square because the proportions of the letters are square based, rather than having rounded or tapered sections.

>>171911839
Looks good. Discovering the vector set has made me want to get a bigger monitor. 16x24 seems to be the best tile size for fortress mode in 1080p and combine with a nice color scheme just looks amazing, but imagine the tile size you could use on a 4k monitor?

I would literally buy a 4k monitor for dwarf fortress.

16x24 is the largest native set on a 1280x720 (so basically what you want on a 1366x768 which would really be like 17.something by 25.something) while 24x36 fits 1920x1080 at 80x30 tiles, you could technically go to like 24x48 but it hurts my head to look at. Up on a 4k you could pull off a 48x72 nicely.

>>171912564
Let us know if they make anything good, least they got the classic version with the beard.
>>
>>171912786
Hmmm, I'd rather have more stuff on screen than the standard 80x25 windowed view offers. Full screen on my 1080p monitor gives me 120x45 which to me feels like a solid trade between nice big crisp tiles and game resolution.

That said, I'm going to fire df up with 24x36 and see how I like it.
>>
>>171913154
The 16x24 is a nice choice for fort mode, but the 24x36 will scale down cleanly even with the game's scaling.

Yeah that can happen occasionally.

I usually give my dwarves axe skills and bring along some axes for them to use.

Took me ages to realize that you really don't need to invest much in your starting dwarves skills. Just pump the things that take ages like mining, combat and farming and let them learn the rest through experience. Then spend the rest on bringing cool items and animals with you.

>>171918742
>How likely is that?
It's one of the most constant threats. You can always count on werebeasts.

>Is this something I should prepare myself for in future runs?
Yes. This is why you'll want to get a good militia together as soon as possible, as well as a burrow where you can evacuate your civilians when one arrives.
>>
>>171919380
>You can always count on werebeasts.
Not if you mod them out :^)

>>171919431
You can't "mod" them out, because they're hard-coded into the game.

You can, however, use advanced worldgen to generate a world with no werebeast curses, and thus no werebeasts.

What's the go-to method for tackling a necro tower?
>>
>>171927079
>stand behind tower
>zombies sense you with their zombie senses, and come out to meet you
>necros don't, so they stay safely inside
>kill zombies one by one with slashes and stabs at their heads and necks
>when the zombies are all gone, walk into the tower and read the books
you choose whether you want to kill the necros or not, but if you do, make sure that they don't escape and find the corpse pile behind the tower
>>
>>171927079
Bait the zombies out, kill them one by one, keep kiting them away from the tower, out of the range of the necros if possible. Keep killing them and then enter the tower and kill more in the same way.

If you pulp them they can't be resurrected.
>>

How efficient is putting clothing, like capes, in the military uniform? And do they conflict, like put one and can't put the breastplate over it or something? I usually just have my dwarves replace all their clothing with the armor because most of the time they put something below and so can't equip the whole uniform.
>>
>>171945517
>>171945725
It doesn't matter what weapon you assign you assign your hammered. If they're in a squad and assigned a weapon they won't use it. Instead they'll drop, seek out an unused hammer, and use that instead. If they can't find one they won't carry out the punishment. It's the fort guard squad that can use their assigned weapons for punishments, but their responsibility is punitive beatings, whereas the hammerer carries out formal "executions".
>>
>>171948279
You can assign capes if you want. They use the outer layer, which isn't used by normal armor and doesn't have any pieces with the [SHAPED] tag.

the maximum stat that dwarf can have is still limited by their starting stats, just like in adventure mode.

the dwarf will always tire slightly faster than most dwarves and will always be slightly stronger than most dwarves. if you had a standard peasant with no stat descriptors, they'd end up being an "average" super-dwarf eventually.

Search for architecture of different civilizations.
Or create your fortress as templegrounds for some god. Find out who most of your dwarves are worshiping and make something with that theme. For example god of death; create a fort that looks like a tomb/mausoleum, or is surrounded by graves and body parts.
Limit your industries accordingly - focus it on butchering, refuse and bone crafting.

Or are your guys worshiping a sun god and/or you're on the equator of your world? create pyramids. Are your dwarves worshiping the stars or moons and/or are you closer to the poles? create stonehenge-like structures.

Does your embark have a lot of cobaltite? Recreate the Gate of Ishtar.

It sort of is and sort of isn't. They can't move through fortifications normally, and won't even try to. If one ends up climbing for some reason, though, they can sometimes climb through or jump through fortifications. It's probably a bug, but Toodles hasn't said either way.

So I was trying to work out which dwarves to declare as an underclass to live up on the surface and do jobs like fishing, hunting and guarding the entrance, and I thought "Hey, I can make all the gay dwarves live on the surface!"

But then I realized that all the migrants and merchants would see a bunch of prancing faggots outside my fort.

How do you guys decide which dwarves to condemn to the surface?

Can anybody recommend me a good Let's Play in an evil/terrifying biome? I just finished watching VanguardOfValor's DF series and enjoyed it, but it was pretty calm. Only one invasion the whole time and he never got around to exploring the caverns. I want something with a little more fun and action.

>>
>>172034674
>when I tried to view him
That's the part I'm asking you to explain in detail. Viewing a unit is a specific thing in DF that can't be done to caged creatures. You could loo(k) at the cage, or zoom to them from the (u)nits screen, or even just read their description from the units screen, but you can't (v)iew them. So please, what exactly did you do before the crash.

Also, magma mist is created whenever an object drops into magma, and in order to see a 'found dead' notification the corpse has to be there, so I think you're just misinterpreting some dwarves burning to death on the other thing.
>>
I just got a single migrant and he's stuck on the edge of the map
wat do?
>>
>>172035869
I did (u) then went to Others, highlighted the Caged Goblin noted as Caged Prisoner, pressed (v) then DF quit.
>>
>>172035246
he started it as a simple visualiser for viewing your entire fort in 3d.

you know, the kind of utility people use to take pretty screenshots of vertically complex forts which wouldn't be made justice by 2d screenshots.

then, he suddenly got the idea that AV should be a UI through which you play the entire game. this lead to the addition of many unneeded details, such as contaminants (i.e. vomit and blood) and items lying on the floor. because of the increased hardware strain caused by these details, the default settings now only shows a very small number of z-levels at once. you can increase them, but it will also strain your computer far more than it used to. for me, it makes the utility almost impossible to use, since I'm playing on an old laptop.

it's sad, because it seems like he really is pandering to the pcgamer commenters who "would give the game a small try if it only had 3d graphics". as a consequence, DF now lacks a simple 3d visualisation tool. we still have stonesense, but the isometric perspective imposes a pretty severe limatation.
>>
>>172035765
There isn't a canon for dwarven sociopolitical organization outside of the noble positions defined in entity_default. You can imagine it however you like, because it's not explicit in the game.

What is the point of ASCII?
Is it really more practical and/or precise once you have learned what letter with such or such color means rather than what sprites means?
The only advantage I can see with ASCII is that once you learned to read it, you don't need to learn other tilesets if you change your tileset but you can stick with one too...

>"Fuck this, I'm gonna build the waifu femdom-fortress!"
>assign the male dwarf to be a miner and the rest of the females with easy jobs
>coincidentally, most immigrants waves are composed of 1-2 male dwarfs and the rest are female dwarfs
>the fort is divided between two classes: the upper class (females), and the lower class (males)
>all males are assigned to be miners, furnace operators and stone haulers. Their meeting area is a dirty underground construction near the caverns, they sleep in shitty 2x2 rooms with a shitty wood bed and cabinet
>all females are assigned with "easy going" jobs (cook, brewer, crafting, engravings...) and noble positions. Their meeting area is the legendary dining room, they sleep in 3x3 decorated rooms with furnitures made of precious metals
>only female dwarfs can join the military, I've created two squads: The Vault Valkyries(melee) and The Ranged Heroines(marksdwarfs), their equipment are made of steel and adamantium
>I've created a one-man squad to be a decoy or distraction (for werebeasts and other strategic attacks) named "Suicide Slave", the assigned dwarf is always the most useless male dwarf equipped with leather armor and a iron short sword. It works pretty much like a punishment
>more than 15 male casualties due to accidents... only 4 female casualties caused by unlucky vital blows
>male dwarfs are buried in a muddy small cavern with common stone slabs, the cavern is located in the surface, very distant from the main base
>female dwarfs are buried in a decorated tomb with coffins made of precious metals, the tomb is located inside on the main base
>In the end my fort had 13 males dwarfs and 67 females dwarfs

Haulers don't give injured dwarves crutches doctors do. Assign a dwarf all the medical labors and disable all other labors from them including hauling. Also make sure you have a hospital with containers (for the crutches) for the doctor to do his job.

Autolabor has a tendency to not always the same dwarves to the same job.

Autolabor and dfhack are trash compared to therapist
>>
>>172068337
There're autolabor settings, like autolabor MINE 2 4 5 which iirc should always have between 2-4 dwarfs with mining enabled using the top 5 skilled dwarfs. You have to use the labor tokens for picking for that stuff though. Workshop skill restrictions would help as well. Therapist is still better, but if you want to be lazy autolabor works completely fine.

Maybe? You can disable autolabor on specific labors using 'autolabor X disable' so you could customize it to the degree you want. The dfhack plugin docs will probably help you more here

Medium everything or low savagery and maximum mineral abundance if you really want an easier game.
Use search (f) to embark in an area with flux stone, a river, shallow metals (multiple), deep metals (multiple), clay or soil, serene surroundings.
Warm temperature is a bit better too.
But honestly use the guide and the wiki http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Quickstart_guide

Nope.

Absolutely fuckall near me. Low evil, low savagery, perfectly peaceful and tons of resources. Nothing else was raising, either.

Four raised dwarves in iron armor, three undead goblin crossbowman and a goblin spearman. I managed to outfit my dwarves with iron maces, chain shirts, leggings and caps over the course of a month before I ran out of wood to make charcoal from and was about to run out of food, and they lasted all of two combat turns each.'

RIP my good start.

Hi /dfg/,

I just got my first forgotten beast, he's a sentient ball of fire and poison gas who spawned in an underground lake my miners broke into, I was very worried at first but after a little while of observation (which is easy because he's evaporating all of the water around him), he seems content to just wander around the lake flash cooking any fish he wanders into, is this normal behavior? do I not need to worry about him unless he runs into one of my dwarves? or is he eventually gonna refocus and start flying towards my fort?

No. Erdamon inherited the position of Count (of another fort) early on. Thunar became Baroness the normal way. When Thunar was upgraded to Duchess, Erdamon was too.

Like I said, Erdamon was the Count of a different fort, but now that he's a Duke it actually says that he's the Duke of my fort. For some reason it doesn't do that with Thunar; it just says ''Duchess'' for her.
>>
>>172077864
It's pretty crazy just from what you see digging through with a debugger and from the crosslinks used in gm-editor.
>>
>>172081373
It is likely Thunar's relative who was up the echelon of social hierarchy bit the dust and she was the next in line.
I'd know since I have an adventurer turned Baron errant, who left stronk 1x1 Healedvessels for some multi-tile wimpy world-gen fort or hillock >>171907847

Keep it alive so it can breed with its mother and spawn a troglodyte army.

Of course eventually the troglodytes breed a lot and start to outnumber dwarves in the army. Eventually they will become very powerful and start demanding wages and bonuses for their military services. They'll have the power to depose leaders, even affect public policy... Soon they'll form a union and demand better safety regulations, and they'll start siphoning money from other government activities into the army. They'll sway the court to declare wars of aggression for their personal benefit, and old grizzled veteran troglodytes will campaign for pensions, and a parliament to represent them, probably the house of Trogs or something... Then a few generations will pass and their troglodyte grandchildren will be living the high life off their benefits, even though they've never fought a day in their lives, damn it. This is what happens when you let troglodytes vote!
>>
>>172096835
Anon troglodytes are too dumb for that, everyone knows that
