HBG used to be reliant on Evade Extender, but since the introduction of Adept (and to some extent, Brave) EE is no longer mandatory or even necessary.

You need the appropriate level of Recoil Down for whatever shot type you're using, and after that you're just looking for generic damage boosting skills. [Shot type] Up skills are obvious. Other good skills are the same fair you'd see on a Blademaster set, like Weakness Exploiter, Crit Boost, Critical Eye, Challenger, Attack Up and Repeat Offender.

Err, you're looking at it the wrong way.
Choose your shot type first. That's what you're firing. It's not a question of "What can I siege fire?", it's a question of "Can I siege fire the shot I want to use".

Normal 1 does half the damage of Normal 2, and it's used only as a last resort after you run out of every other shot type.

Learning how to use Pierce S will take you a long way. From Generations onward, ironically Pierce 1 is the best shot due to a quirk in the damage formula. Pierce 3 is stronger when the monster moves out of critical distance of Pierce 1 frequently (e.g. Glavenus), or when the monster is large enough for you to reliably hit all the shots (Glavenus again, Deviljho, Seltas Queen). Pierce 2 is the runt of the litter, and you should only use it as a back-up for Pierce 3.

I should add, Shot Booster / Trajectory has always been an underrated and surprisingly powerful skill. An ideal set for a Pierce gun would be:
1. Recoil Down+1 (if necessary, it's unlikely you'd ever need RD+2)
2. Pierce S Up
3. Shot Booster
4. Damage Skill (Weakness Exploit)
5. Damage Skill (CE+2)
6. Damage Skill (Crit Boost).

Weakness Exploit is worth less for Pierce since the nature of the shots mean you won't hit the weakspot 100% of the time even when you're aiming directly at it, but it's just such a high value skill that you usually pick it up anyway.

The above set is doable in MHGen, so in MHXX you can probably squeeze another damage skill in at the end, or replace one with an even stronger skill e.g. Challenger.

Shot Booster increases the critical distance of your shots. While it isn't a numerical increase to your damage output, functionally it means you spend less time rolling around to get into critical range, can continue firing in critical range if the monster moves away from you during siege fire, and makes it less likely that the last few hits of your Pierce shots will leave critical distance despite the first few hits being landed whilst in critical distance.

For a new player it might cause bad habits, since you're getting used to a more lenient critical distance, but you could also aruge that a more lenient crit distance makes it easier to learn the concept.

It depends entirely on what shots you're firing.
The way recoil works is that there are three tiers of recoil: 1s, 2s, and 2.5s. You want whatever your primary shot is to be fired with 1s of recoil. If you don't have enough for that, it'll have 2s of recoil which both kills your DPS and kills you. If you REALLY don't have enough, it'll be 2.5s.

Normal and Pierce 1 take "average" recoil, Pierce 2/3 and Pellet 2/3 take "some" recoil (nobody uses Pellet 1), Elemental shots take "average" but P. Elemental take "some". I'm not sure what Element Lv 2 take. Heavy recoil shots like Status and Explosives usually require "very low" or "min" to be fired without recoil. Status 1 takes only "low".

Pierce 2 and Pierce 3 do the same amount of damage per hit. Like, if the last hit of Pierce 3 misses, it deals 7x4 damage, which is identical to Pierce 2. Pierce 2 has slightly faster reload speed, but Pierce 3's superior critical distance makes it better.

Pierce 3 is just a better version of the Pierce 2 shot. Pierce 1 is different, as it does 9x3 damage and is now, strangely, the best Pierce shot against a lot of monsters.
