I miss some subspecies from 3rd and 4th gen like Tigerstripe Zamtrios, Sand Barioth and a few others because they were actually different and provided a different experience compared to their original ones.

Gen 1 and 2 to an extent subspecies are just the same monster with a paintjob and a new attack so those can stay gone for all I care

Once I was trying out alchemy style and got my SP arts to start flashing rainbow and freaking out but won before I could activate any of them. I've tried replicating it and the highest I can get is purple. Is this an SP level 5 or something? How do you get it?

How does anyone play lance? Legitimate question, not trying to take the piss. Every time I try using it I deal shit damage, have mediocre hunter arts, and end up being slow and uncontrollable as fuck even with the charge. You have a shield that blocks a lot so it could be used as a defensive class but with the new changes to gunlance in brave stance I could just play that instead and end up having better dps. I'm 100% sure there's something i'm missing because I never ever play lance but I legitimately want to know what draws people to it/makes it really good to them

GL is second last and lance is first by a long shot, at least it was in gen and it doesnt look like it while change much in XX except maybe GL going up a bit and passing prowler. Even before striker charge spam lance outdamaged GL.
Anyways, playing lance is just a matter of sticking to the monster all of the time since you deal sustained damage over long periods of time as opposed to burst damage during openings. The weapon is also fairly mobile, you just need to learn to use said mobility.

Alchemy gauge builds up over time, goes up slightly faster from hitting things

You have the unique skill of adding more effects to SP, your SP level goes up to 4 which allows for unique effects on each level. IIRC level 2 negates stamina depletion (not usage, just makes it so the bar doesnt decrease), level 3 autoheals slowly, and level 4 increases flinch/trip rate pretty drastically. This affects everyone and the upgrade to your sp activating skills is permanent. It goes up depending on how many points of barrel usage you used during the hunt.

Your items:

1) Whetstone or Food, and if you're gunner you either have coatings or bullets instead of the whetstone. Whetstone acts the same, but you eat the food way faster with smaller stamina recovery. Haven't tried the bullets but apparently they're mediocre. Sounds shitty but it's actually a pretty decent sink into barrel points for reasons explained later

2) Sonic Bomb or Healing Agent. Basically a free sonic bomb or an agent that heals over time similar to your SP3 skill. It also stacks with SP3 and also the heal up art. Not only that, but it combos with something i'll talk about later. Honestly the sonic bomb blows ass, it takes forever to fire and I never really use it

3) Speed Drug or Earplugs. Earplugs are self explanatory, but can be duped (explanation later yadda yadda). Speed Drug speeds up your barrel shaking massively, making it the first one you should get every fight. It also lasts fucking forever.

4) Alchemy Fuel or Alchemy Bazooka. Both of these kick ass, but I have no idea how much damage bazooka does it's just fun to use. Could be useless for all I know. Alchemy fuel is basically a slickaxe, but only for alchemy items and way better. You can dupe pretty much almost every item using combos 6-8 times. It's ridiculous. Get one food, get alchemy fuel, dupe the food 8 times and you have 8 fast stamina charges. etc with other items

5) Hunter Art Bomb or Healing Spray

Hunter art bomb is a smoke bomb but increases hunter arts gauges for anyone in it's range by ~65%. It's pretty decent to sink 5 points into if you have nothing else you need to get. Healing spray is a slow ass barrel you shake that heals people around you slowly and then explodes into a massive aoe of heals, potentially healing people from 1-100% if done right. However it's goddamn slow and can be destroyed if you get hit and you should be healing with your SP3+ anyways so I never bother

I've been playing alchemy style with hunting horn to be the true support bitch and it's fun as fuck, I honestly wasn't expecting it to be. My only advice is to constantly spam shit because you're wasting barrel increase if you stay at 5 charged for too long and the way you snowball with sp levels and alchemy fuel it's better to get some dumb shit than just sit on your charges

Outside of speedrunning? I've got almost nothing.
At this stage I've racked up over 4,500 hours, and I mostly *git gud* over a long period of time.

With that said, the moment that the switch was flicked for me was when I equipped full Barioth+ armour in MHTri, took it for a test run against Diablos, and learnt just how powerful being able to MOI attacks was.

My eyes were open, and it was time to git gud.

Started with FU and it's like a relaxing hour long play session game with friends. Didn't really click or spend much time on it. Same deal with 3U. Just dicked around with random weapons.

Then I started to play the game proper with 4U when I had some major depression and shit. Picked up the bow thinking it'd be a nice change of pace gunning. Got my shit kicked in by everything and spend all hunts 30 minutes. Then started researching hitzones and everything clicked. This game became really fun and stopped me from feeling down.

Back in F2 when I was 10 or 11 and finally beat Khezu with Barbori Blade. Another would be Tigrex and Kushala. Also soloing Ashen Lao and White Fatalis. Soloing Caravan Seregios in 4U felt good. Hyper Silver Rath and Hyper Jho solo was so rewarding.

My friends don't play monhun with me anymore but I still play with my brother. He's also extremely bad and casual at it.

What I do is play TrapMaster SnS so he can go ham on the monster while I lock it down. He's having a lot of fun with it and it made the hunt go without as much of a problem so he's not frustrated with it.

For the elders I just use pierce HBG and hope they get stunned to death while my brother runs around

In 4U, for awhile I decided SA was the only weapon I was going to use. The only 140 it was a good weapon for was Deviljho. So, the only monster I fought for a long time is Jho, solo and in groups. I was shit at first, I would delete GQs as soon as they hit 136 just to start another one from scratch, but I took the plunge and got good and grind them to 140. My passion for killing Deviljhos got me nearly 900 kills on my guild card, and I don't consider my work with 4U done until I kill 1000.

Which one does /mhg/ find more FUN?

i got monster hunter tri with the controller bundle for christmas when getting actual christmas presents was still a thing, i asked for it because nintendo power wrote about it. i played it for an hour and a half and fucking hated it and never touched it again. pro controller was pretty dope though

3U rolled around and for some reason i bought it, i have no clue why. i think i liked the variety of weapons you could create and use because i am a skill tree/weapon tree fetishist and i thought that i was maybe missing something. i still hated it even though i got further, to gobul before quitting

i bought monster hunter 4u because all my friends were playing it and something finally clicked and i understood how everything worked and i don't know why. i'm now chained to this game for life. i don't speedrun or anything, i stop playing when i do every major quest that isnt a grind to get to, but i play it like crack during that period

i'm not sure if anyone else has a similar experience with hating the game and then playing it again and loving it but not knowing how it happened

I played MH1 because a friend talked it up but then he proceeded to dictate every choice and move I should make.
Down to doing the same kelbi hunting quest dozens of times in a row to get money.
So I loathe it at first.
A couple years later I saw it for cheap at a Gamestop and decided to give it another try, this time making sure I never touched that damn kelbi quest. And surprise, it's a lot more fun when you make your own choices instead of only doing what someone else says.

In the end it's become my favorite game series to date.

Dude I hate people who do this. I remember playing dark souls 1 and my friend was so into it he told me what to do and what secrets to get and what weapons were statistically the best and I fucking hated that shitty game. I felt like the only person because everyone else wouldn't stop praising it. Then I played dark souls 2 by myself and the beginning was much easier and I didn't have a backseat gamer and I loved it even though people say it's the worst in the series.

I've tried Hunting Horn and Gunlance because i'm a gimmick weapon shitter. Gunlance in alchemy mode gets a slam when you hold your shield up to quickly boost barrel meter which is pretty pimp, i'm not sure if that means anything to you because nobody uses it. Hunting Horn works amazingly well mostly because the self improvement allows you to gtfo quickly before sheathing and get a few barrels out far away.

I'm sure there's other weapons that are good, i've just loved HH so much with this I haven't bothered to change. The fact that gunlance gets a different move makes me think that there might be interesting move changes with other weapons

I've been guard lancing for years now. It's very fun but it's less viable now due to hypers and deviants having plenty of attacks that chip and push you back even with guard +2. Other than that it's amazing, very fluid and utilizes lances full moveset.

Oh and SP is just a thing you activate on your arts that makes them cost more but activates SP mode for everyone. The higher levels of SP mode are above, but SP level 1 gives different bonuses to every style. I think you can talk to the arts master to see what they do

Think Hellblade stuff sits at around 300 with natural purple, but there's a few others with that as well like the Mantis and Tigrex. Ballfuck weapons go from huge white to red, so I guess some weapon builds could use it and skip out on RS.

Esurient XR though might open up some S+1/2 possibilities once released.

For the longest time Jho was my worst monster, every quest with him I carted at least twice and took forever, and this hurt because every other monster I could reliably kill with 0 carts and in a reasonable time. Finally one day I was doing an expedition and I was trying to kill as many things as possible without quitting out. Eventually that fucker popped up and for a second I thought about abandoning but I said fuck it and went for it. Somehow I didn't take a single hit and fucking destroyed him. Ever since then I've never had any problems with Jho (except 4U's savage because lol pins) and now he's one of my favorite fights.

Never having played before I tried the 3U demo and fucking hated it, it was pretty much mustachedtigrex.jpg. Then like a year later I saw a thread on /v/ talking about it and all the shit they were doing sounded so awesome so I gave it another try while trying to be more patient with my attacks and fell in love. I played the demo for hours and went out and bought it the next day.
