Before you get any meme answers; I think it was because not enough people were ever on and like most Alpha and Beta tests, not enough feedback was being sent to Innova. On top of that, there was maybe 100 codes given out a week that would only be active for an hour, and if you were lucky to get one the servers would only be up at certain rusky hours. Then when you got in game there was hardly any people online. It doesn't help that it got leaked either.
It's a real shame too, I really liked the bit I played.

If you're talking about the CE/2 era, then yes, they're mostly gone. After all, those games were mostly popular with high schoolers/college students who are now in their 30s and likely have families.

Halo 3 however brought in an all new base of much younger players. Most of them eventually gravitated towards other games like Call of Duty, GTA, and Destiny, as well as other consoles like the PS4 when it solidified it's status as the normie console of gen 8. However, SOME of these people are still here.

Then there's whatever people Reach and 4 brought in for the first time. Probably not many, but there here as well.

I don't think Halo 5 generated many new first-time fans. The plus here is that this is the first time in any halo game where I almost never hear little kids screaming on the mic. The game population may be small, but the average age seems to probably be the most mature out of any Halo game that has utilized XBL.

I'll submit my consensus that if Microsoft wants to rebuild the Halo name into a popular one again, they have to do more than pander to oldfags with nostalgia. A lot of trilogy purists don't want to hear this, but I'm sorry, simply "making it play like the old games" alone isn't going to make the game popular again. That doesn't mean things should stay the same either, but it's not a one way street, that's all I'm saying. Advertising also has its part to play.

One problem with gauging how well the old style would resonate with the current gamer base is that the MCC was a complete and utter disaster. If it had launched in working condition then we would have been able to see what effect it would have had and if it would have gained traction or not.
