It happens to every general. A few pictures that /mbg/ made were posted almost immediately to Reddit, and TW talked about the "funny pictures" they found on Reddit a few days later.

The new engine they brought in with Empire: Total War (Warscape, as it is called) is incredibly flawed. It was designed for musket battles and artillery, hence why the projectiles and missiles work very well. However the Warscape engine was not designed for melee combat, and 'kill moves' (set piece animations done by stuntmen) were introduced as the SOLE way of soldiers attacking, meaning that once a 'kill move' starts it cannot be interrupted, vastly limiting the amount of scenarios that are possible; in earlier total wars 'Rome I' and 'Medieval II'' the engine they used (I don't think it really has a name) allowed for lots more variables. For instance, soldiers could be knocked down and then get up and soldiers could also interrupt attacks. On top of this, units could both attack another (1 unit) at the same time. This is a major issue, in later Total War games it is theoretically possible for a single peasant to be surrounded by hundreds of enemies and yet (if he keeps getting lucky and kills them) tie them up (occupy their 'attention') for a battle deciding length of time, due to the fact that only one soldier can attack him at once meaning that all the soldiers stand there and do nothing whilst one soldier engages. In Rome I, if a unit was surrounded it would die much quicker as all units within striking distance could all attack at once. This may not sound like that big of a deal but in practice, it looks stupid and totally kills emersion. Also, kill moves (from a spectacle point of view) dramatically worsens the melee combat; There is a fixed number of 'kill moves' to view, after a few battles you'll have seen all of them and they become boring. Because of the kill moves soldiers also slide around (without the 'walk' animation) trying to get into position to start the kill moves, making it look like the floors are too slippery or something.

In Warscape games there is no unit collision, only an illusion. In Rome II the units do not push and shove at each other like they did in the original, only statically poke each other with their swords in animations that lack any vigour. In Rome I when units charged they would all surge into the enemy unit visibly pushing into it, forcing it back, bending the main battle line. In Warscape games all they do is stop the units from colliding artificially: when a unit charges another the first rank starts fighting but the rest just all stop dead in perfect synchronisation, giving the impression you're commanding robots rather than actual people. In Rome I, each individual soldier reacted at a different speed to an order giving the battlefield a much more lifelike feel.

A lot of the deep flaws come from the engine and bad design decisions like removing guard mode and streamlining the campaign. In Rome I you had this almost RPG-like way of building up cities from tiny villages into massive metropolises (in my opinion) this was a better system, why can't a small town become large if you wish to invest time and effort into it, and different provinces (cities) still had value due to base farming and trade resources (that weren't as valued as they are in the recent TW's but still were useful). They also removed 'loose formation' from Rome II (as far as I know) from a lot of the units which is absurd if you ask me.

In Rome, marching is realistic.
In Rome 2, it looks like soldiers are on roller blades.

And don't get me started on the foggy, brownbloom, post-processing, filters out of the ass puke graphics.

Thick skinned, Hard to hit, Deadly blade, and charge in that order. Most leaders already start with a pretty high melee attack so I focus on keeping them standing as long as possible to help maintain discipline longer and keep them in the fight. Deadly blade only if I feel like I'm struggling against enemy lords, and charge never, there are almost always better choices.

Won the Westphalian campaign, here is a quick look at my territory - eastphalia and the danes are both my vassals, with the other pagan factions as military allies

Heres how the saxons play

Saxon cavalry can do very well if they get their javelins off, especially if the enemy is in diamond/wedge formation. Frankish armies that bring 6-8 units of horsemen get absolutely shat on by any kind of skirmishers (I used levy skirmishers in every battle for this campaign). Seax warriors are great main line units due to their bonus vs infanty and ap damage, but its lame how they upgrade into armored swords instead of armored seax warriors.

I fought an Army in Ostland and the map was an Athel Loren one with fancy blue moon runes and gargantuan trees with neat handy dandy cliff faces for the Wood Elves and only the Wood Elves. Fuck them.

Anyway I used that kind of formation to try to intercept the wolf riders and stop them from shitting all over my artillery with semi-satisfactory results

The center was a bit open when the lines merged but the greenskins didn't push through it oddly enough, so it just became a slaughterhouse with the quarrelers and catapults firing point blank into the gap

In many cases of the various -lands it's not all that precise.

I agree that Ostermark is pretty much Poland.
Nuln is Nuremberg.
Carroburg is (sorta) Cologne

But:
Border Princes are Habsburg/Austria, black eagle on golden shield is pretty much a dead giveaway.
Reikland is nothing specific from the HRE, though Altdorf is moslty Frankfurt.
Nordland is Sweden, at least by their colours. (Yes, Sweden was not in the HRE, but they intervened in the 30 Years War, which is what the Empire is stuck in for all eternity)

The AI cant handle non standard formations, in that set up they would all get tied up in the center by lords then shot to bits. The only exception is other 1 unit models, which you have to either block with your own unit or use something with mass.

The only other formation that works better than broken up ones is ultra tight boxes/'cup' shapes to stack buffs over a whole army.

They're okay at helping add bulk to the main battle line; as long as you've got someone else fighting the enemy first, they can do some decent damage just because of the fact that they have numbers. They're also fairly cheap, which can occasionally be useful when you want lots of expensive cavalry, but also some meatshields too. Their numbers probably make them good at absorbing a charge, come to think of it.

But yeah, they are really a unit that's fluffy at best, and they're not worth taking when there's a limit on peasant units in your army. If you can't get at least some men-at-arms with swords, then you're really fucked.

Alright! The Castilians were neutral for a while, but they've finally thrown in with the Aragonese.

Petiri here is sprinting back to Pamplona as fast as possible, and mayybee with some of these fancy new mercenaries that have finally spawned.

I tried the mod but I realized that it's based off vanilla mediveal 2 so Pikemen drop their pikes in combat which sucks. I'm playing the swiss right now in the Italian Wars 4.1 and it's pretty cool. What they need to do is give goods an actual gameplay function besides give money when you export them. Like, you need iron to make advanced weapon buildings, wine for certain city upgrades, shit like that.

If they had a function like that, it would make sense for the AI to reject trade with potential competitors, since giving them goods would allow them to build better infrastructure. It would also make factions with lots of tradeable goods more attractive as potential trade partners.

Rate my warhammer strats, ive been noticing my archers/handgunners weren't getting shots off because they had people infront, now they are finally wasting all their ammo getting solid ~150 kills each. They usually don't get into fights or I can send them around the side to flank shoot.

I had to edge of tomorrow that shit but I kept my general in back with the mortar and a unit of halberdiers, and only kept most of my melee on the walls to keep the towers shooting (not that it mattered, they had towers for almost every unit of infantry), kept them on the walls to get some tower kills them pulled as many back as I could to where the general was.

Kept most of the ranged the right side where they had a troll fuck up the gates, so they shot the shit out of the other stuff that just stood out there waiting, then pulled crossbowmen to the rear, had handgunners set up in side streets with outriders behind them.

Some good mortar shots, and a lucky unit that reformed outside the gates instead of shattering let me kill their general and kick them the fuck out.

That's actually pretty cool, and could promote trying to make peace with the dwarves because you need their iron, and they might want a strong ally that could provide foodstuffs (it's not a resource now, but it could be). Wine could be necessary for taverns, salt for warehouses.

Another idea I think would be cool would be to steal from Endless Legend and have a Winter and Summer cycle. It doesn't have to be as harsh in the winter on most factions, but it would be very flavorful for Wood Elves, and might hinder armies in a way that would not hinder Norse tribes, or generally reflect unit healing.

Yeah, when Chaos stirred I started giving chunks of money to Kislev each turn, to keep them as a meatshield and prevent chaos from raiding my shit. As a result Chaos never went past Kislev and the old world turned into clusterfuck - Middenland went full teutonic on half the Empire provinces, Brettonia is colonising the Troll Country, Karl only has Reikland, Wissenland and Stirland (I control moot though). This was a fun mess.
Tree Kin are seemingly near indestructible in SFO, only lost some trying to keep the Spider Queen in place to keep the hail of arrows on it. By the time she was done, Durthu and the Branchie Boys were swamped in Gobs and Orcs and spent the rest of the battle in the middle of a swamp of green. Wild Riders, Hawk Riders, and Eggles did the good work mucking up their artillery and beating up wizardos.
I have no idea how to keep archers alive. A few minutes in and they were nonstop being bounced around by those Orc chariots and Squig Hoppas. Think I might switch over to full on Hawkspam

Secondly, depending on the faction you're playing you won't really have to deal with not-vikings. But if you do then it's fairly easy to shit on them at most points in the game.

Chaos/viking units are notoriously shitty until late late game and their garrisons are even worse and sometimes nonexistant. Just pop on over across the sea and fuck them up every 10-20 turns or so, you can also get alot of shekels like this too. Another added bonus is that you'll get diplomacy points with almost all factions doing this which should make your game easier.

The fact that you're having trouble with this means you're either retarded or blind(possibly both) and haven't read the tool tips regarding the game basics or you legitimately can't into strategy because you can't comprehend things that happen five turns into the future.

The constant battle for survival in norsca is meant to toughen people up.
Ingame, marauders end up being pretty shit because WoC needed a low tier infantry unit and norsca would be even more annoying to fight if marauders were better than they are now, but that goes for a lot of the chaos units. Chaos warriors are supposed to be fairly scary but nobody gives a shit because all factions have access to better infantry than the regular chaos warriors and can just spam them, which you couldn't do in tabletop.

I recently finished a Vlad campaign on very hard.
You can actually get Averhiem and that other greenred human faction in like 2 turns. Vlad's siege attacker atribute combined with the fellbats/varghesists will make short work of the humans who at that point don't have strong units.

I attack the greenred faction on the first turn, then on turn 2 i summon isabella and atttack the averheim capital. I get isabella to finish Averhiem off on turn 3 and turn vlad to that greenred faction on turn 3 and wipe the floor with them.

During this time templehof and manlet shouldn't actually be fighting. This will give you enough time to get templehof+the towns above manlet's region.

I actually kept manlet alive for a while since he's pretty useful at getting rid of zhufbar and the orcs to the south. From here you can chip away at the empire or let them live. I let them live and used them to fight off chaos. If you can manage to somehow keep Kislev alive then please post, because those fuckers got wiped way before chaos started invading.

What should i do? Welfbros were pretty useful and dealt with Varg and Skaeling alone and are now colonizing Norsca. Bretonnia on other hand was fucking useless, because they recruit only peasants. Empire was a good buffer against Chaos Forces (made stronger with Fear the Chaos Tide).

Somehow Vlad was removed by the Empire or Beastmen or Greenskins (I have Da Green Threat and Orcs Occupy Anywhere), and Manlet was beat so hard that the only settlement he had was Castle Drakenhof. Probably those dorfs from the east razed Waldenhof and Eschen and then Templehof colonized them. When i saw that, I attacked him and sacked and razed Drakenhof to finish him off so i won't have to deal with vampire legendary lords in future. Chaos invasion (enhanced with Fear the Chaos Tide and Rise of the Beastmen) already came and destroyed Kislev so backstabing cunt fighting with the Empire was the last thing i wanted. Templehof was neutral towards the Empire so i allied with them and guided them to attack weaker Chaos/Norscan/Beastmen forces. Their attrition was useful against chaos too. I also convinced Orion to attack Norsca, and when he conquered one settlement there, then he started to conquering every Norscan province so both Varg and Skaeilling armies had to fuck off back to Norsca to stop him.
After i stopped Chaos Invasion my ally Border Provincies attacked Templehof but i didn't wanted war yet so i broke my alliances. Templehof attacked me few turns later anyway, but they are too weak to do anything to even my garrisons. Now it seems that there will be a world war, because Welves attacked Bretonnia allied with Empire (everyone is my ally too) and i have have almost the strongest army in the world (Elves are first) and Estalia is my vassal.

I think that i will save right before this attack and try to side with other faction in future. I sided with Welves because I removed them few times already and i didn't fought with Bretonnia after update yet

I like how there's holes for ranged unit to shoot through. I always thought enemy will go through the holes and reach the back line but in TW they just glue to your main line.

Here's my strat, I am simple-minded so head-on brawl is my forte.
The Gorebull+Mino combo is self-explained, they will go straight into enemy main line
Ungor archer is for countering ranged units or flying ones
Cygor will soften cavalry and and infantry
Centigors are artillery-killing taskforce, counter-cygor-killing-taskforce taskforce or foot-archer sweeper
Bestigors are used depend on situation, but usually they join the main line if there's too many foot soldiers (especially armor piercing anti-large) or protect flanks if there's too many cavalries.
Preserved GW Mino in the back is mostly for countering flanking cavalry but will eventually join the main line if the enemy flanking force is no threat
Khazrak and Shaman are for buffing/debuffing

To be honest if you give Tilea, Estalia and Border Princes a bit of a hand they turn into absolute beasts. I've been babysitting them all game with the Dwarfs and now they charging up and down the old world going after anything and everything in sight. You can see much movement you have left by holding down right mouse button. Chaos and beastmen are almost unplayable if you don't know this. Also if you remove the marauder building right at the start of the game you can build the far superior chaos warrior one.
Also there's a few ways to deal with northern tribes. During the game you'll have to "awaken" them - conquer a norscan settlement and restore the tribe that lived there in the past, automatically making them your military allies. The thing is, they are not allied with each other, and since you'll have to awaken many different tribes that may become a problem. Personally, I attacked the tribes right after liberating them and vassalised them, preventing further infighting. Only one tribe tried to break away from me in the entire Legendary game and got subsequently purged. Some people say that it's better to leave just one tribe to control entire Norsca, to prevent infighting.

It depends from whose perspective the lore is written and what GW wants to do with the plot. For example during the End Times Skaven started out by murdering like 60% of all the important characters in the setting, destroying several countries completely, and then went on to do absolutely nothing for the rest of the plot except being cannon fodder.
An Orc is supposed to be ridiculously strong, almost impervious to pain and capable of quickly healing all but most grievous wounds and yet greenskins somehow got beaten by primitive humans who used roughly the same equipment as them.

You need speedy units to mess up their ranged and one unit of doggos aint gonna cut it. Basic infantry you treat like cavalry because they all have good charge bonus. Need to rely on overwhelming the enemy quickly.

It is tricky, but it's usually survivable by having a runelord or thane try to counter their agents, the AI doesnt try to counter-assassinate lots in my experience. Then again you can also get a grudge to tell you to raid Essen, which has been destroyed by chaos/vamps for several turns already, while you're trying to win the badlands.

It looks like you need to re-evaluate some things. Did your hammerers get zero kills because they were fighting the giant the whole time or whats up with that? Hammerers are very devastating in the charge, but they shouldn't be part of the main battle line. Your grudge thrower should be probably be focused on the enemy's most valuable infantry, and you ought to build another one.

your infantry is highly armored, so take out the armor piercing goblin units and the giant with your missile troops. should be able to focus them all down to nothing before they even reach your lines. they have little to no armor and no shields.

once the lines meet, you can safely wreck all their missile troops with yours. I would probably have a sort of semi-circle formation going on to protect the quarrelers from their spider monkeys.

Thorgrim could take on their generals easily, I imagine.

More grudgethrowers, if you can get a good shot on massed enemy soldiers they really start to shine.
As for the actual melee, as long as you target high priority units with your ranged (like anything with AP or cavalry) dorf infantry are stubborn little fuckers who can stand up to almost anything, which gives you ample time to do the actual killing with your other units.

When Sylvania hasn't been depicted in any form that isn't a picture or a passage of text, I think the games interpretation of it is pretty decent.

Dwarfs not being raidable would suck, their primary matchup is Greenskins whose economy is raiding-based.

Dwarf cities I can kind of agree on, but I also understand that with the way the game plays having some kind of multi-level battle across different levels of the city would be a clusterfuck and only one faction would benefit from it, it's not worth redesigning sieges for. Though Sieges do suck as of right now.

I think the issue with raiding removing attrition is more to do with attrition itself. The system is rather flawed and I think more could be done to improve it, and thereby improve raiding.

Talabecland should be an awesome map, you're right about that. I believe a custom map has been made though, which is pretty good for online matchups but the AI can't navigate it.

It's a mod. Wood Elves are actually isolationist and won't leave but if anyone raids or attacks their settlements they sperg out and send an obliteration party. It also adds seasons which affect Wood Elves more than other factions.
Chaos becomes actually dangerous seeing as their stacks tend to stick together much more often and Greenskins are more likely to win the Badlands Bowl than before. Ambushes are also more likely.

you use your infantry to lock in with their infantry but there isn't much going on there. No wedge charge breakthroughs for sudden decisive slaughters or anything like that in total war, just grinding block against block until one wears away. you can try some maneuvers there with reserves but they're easily countered because big organized blocks of men are slow.

Whereas with cav you are on the open flanks and you yourself decide the outcomes of the battle as a whole there by personally directing the maneuvers, charges and feints. they're fast enough to take advantage of an opening and punish a weakness or lapse of attention, and in the same vein deliver their damage quickly and can turn an entire battle in a single stroke.

tldr you send in the infantry but you lead the cavalry

Seems that way based on what their researchers have been reportedly doing in recent months. Personally I'm more interested in what new things they can bring to the table from a game mechanics perspective. I want real city combat and something to make colonisation interesting rather than just rolling over hordes of brown people with stacks of line infantry if they're doing 19th century.

If you can't win with two stacks on the field you wouldn't have been able to win with three. And often the reinforcements come in a retarded order so you end up with all ranged units and six heroes on the field

Ok, so this is that fruitless siege for Alencon (which I won) but I JUST FOUND OUT SOMETHING INSANE

I have like 500 hours in M2 and I have NEVER seen this before. If you hold down Shift while a single unit is selected, it SHOWS YOU which unit it is attacking. After you gobble up the other vampire factions expand south to munch on the Border Princes and Tilea

Even if you lose your starting provinces you'll still have ones that are much more defensible

Try to keep your relations with THE EMPRAH and the horsefuckers (i.e. bribe the shit out of them) and you should be able to hold Black Fire Pass against just about anything

Alright! The spy in Bordeaux has managed to open the gates for us. We're gonna try blitzing our way thru Bordelais and Gascony in order to take the Brit's quite rich territory. This will get us in good with the French, while getting territory from someone that no one is coming to defend. Also, I need the French to continue living for a while, and not having to worry about the southern front should be good for them.

Kislev already meatshielded the shit out of the chaos rapetrain. They even scored a decisive victory north of Bechafen. Than they got cleaned up and chaos started pouring into Essen while the Empire sent doomstacks at me and the Dwarves legit wiped out orcs at 80 turns and were removing border princeletes from their provinces at turn 100.

Hey, I've been living under a rock my entire life and I never played any of the Total Wars.
I've heard people speak the world of Medieval 2, but is it still playable in the year 2017?
Also, do you have any fun mods to recommend?

Medieval 2 is good but has some annoying kinks. For example, units take a moment to respond to orders, I guess to be realistic. This can be frustrating when you're telling your crossbowmen to run the fuck away from the arab cavalry thats charging straight for them.

Stainless Steel is a mod that a lot of people use for Medieval 2. It's has a much better campaign map but also buffs cavalry immensely. I'd still say its the best way to experience Medieval 2 though.

If you want the best TW though, I'd say you should go with Shogun 2. The Realm Divide (where every clan turns against you) is annoying but all the other factors (music, missions, battle improvements like being able to control huge armies) make up for it.

Medieval 2 is still a good game, but honestly, you're better off with one of the new ones. Medieval 2 is really fucking clunky in some aspects, and personally I find it nearly unplayable nowadays. It's not bad at all, just frustrating I guess.

If you're into medieval stuff particularly, Attila and Age of Charlemagne kind of cover the early medieval shit, and a pretty big conversion mod should be released soonâ„¢. Otherwise, any of the games post Empire are bretty good, although Rome 2 is kind of obsolete since Attila is pretty much an upgrade except for setting. Napoleon is my favourite, but obviously has some pretty significant differences to most other games in the series since it's all about dem muskets. Shogun 2 is pretty great, and Fall of the Samurai is fucking amazing. I haven't played much Warhammer since I decided to wait for more mods and expansions (this was a long time ago, I'm sure there's plenty now).
